Title: RFG Checklist Idea
Post by: blcklblskt on October 22, 2008, 03:47:17 PM
I was wondering if it would be possible to add a feature with the RFG checklists (http://www.rfgeneration.com/PHP/checklists.php).  With all the demos, magazine games, etc. on some consoles, I think that it would be easier to root them out with one of them fancy check box things.  What I am asking for is to have some sort of "edit checklist" feature where you can remove choices from a particular checklist that you want (adding them would be way too time-consuming in cases of such consoles like PS2).  Don't know if anyone gets what I'm saying...

Maybe you have to elaborate your idea a bit by saying how you'd want it to look like and where exactly you'd want to have it, etc... :)

Let me try to explain better :):

On the RFG collection checklists, I was looking for something along the lines of an "edit printable checklist" feature.  This feature would edit the collection checklist for that particular user, not for all the users of RFG.

It could be displayed in a column next to the "printer friendly" and "viewing friendly" columns that are next to the console's name.

When you click on the link, it would bring you to a page that has all the games for that particular console with a checkbox next to it, similar to the ones when you remove more than one game in your own collection.

This way you could print a shortened list excluding variants, PSM demo discs, or whatever else that the user sees fit.

Its not too important, just something I thought would help make the collection list have only the games that you want/plan on buying.

Ah, I get it now. It sounds like a nice and useful feature to have, but (as you said yourself) isn't really a priority. :)

Checklists, believe it or not, are a rather intensive script to generate as it loads a lot of information. As such, we try to minimize the number of queries completed in a given day by caching the actual lists.  Having an editable list would be an intensive and caching nightmare. Additionally, many of the games in the database do not even have genres listed with them.

As such, we leave it to you, the collector, to decide which titles to value on a list and which ones not to value. Doing so keeps it so that the server does not crash. Not to say that this feature couldn't be added in the future, but right now it unfortunately is not something that can be worked on.

Makes perfect sense when you think about it, thanks TJ.

Sounds good, I was just too lazy to cross them out on the checklist, but thanks anyway for responding.  Besides, server crashs ain't no good yo. :)

This might take a little more work, but you could always create a list using a separate folder in your collection and print that out.  At the bottom of each page is a print page link that gives you a simplified table of the games in that folder.  It doesn't look quite as nice as the collection checklists, but all the info is still there.
