Title: The bad habits thread.
Post by: phoenix1967 on August 26, 2008, 12:52:12 PM
What bad habits do you have? And if you got over them, how did you do it?

It's been pointed out to me by my girlfriend that I crack my knuckles excessively. I didn't even realize it, but the last couple of days it's really opened my eyes that it's true. I'm trying to be more mindful of it and just not do it, we'll see how that goes. :-\

I crack my knuckles probably 12-15 times a day, even my toes. It's bad. My thumbs ache most of the day because of it :-/

I also bite my nails pretty regularly.

I'm sure that there are more, but these are the major ones.

I eat the skin off my fingers absentmindedly.

Other than that I have a habit of never going to bed.

Let's see...

1. Knuckle Cracking -  I do this constantly... ;) (I also crack my back, neck, and toes  :o)
2. Nail Biting :(
3.
I eat the skin off my fingers absentmindedly.

There are waaay more, both those are the most prevalent.

I crack my left ankle incessantly. It's extremely loud.

Nail biting is my big one, because my hands feel the need to always be doing something.  If I'm using the mouse and the other hand is free... nails are being bitten, or else I'm flipping something around in my hands.  I can't stop it.

Also I do crack my right knuckle (the left refuses to crack at all, but the right makes up for it by cracking extremely loudly) and my neck an awful lot.

Another bad habit I've noticed is that I have trouble not sitting on one of my legs when I sit.  My lower body is way taller than my upper body, so I've always felt the need to boost myself up.  This makes for a big problem in more formal situations, where it takes all my willpower to keep myself from doing it.

I got a few that haven't been mentioned. My worst would be the need to the touch the edge or end of a table. I've always had this problem and don't know if anyone else does. Also another strange one is when I put bottles on my finger and start hitting them against each other.

Adrian Monk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Monk) comes to mind. ;)

I spend about 2 minutes every morning repositioning everything on my desk.  The night shift tends to leave everything in the wrong spot.  I also have to have my remote controls for my TV, DVD, VCR, Sat lined up facing the same way.  I tend to crack my knuckles and my neck too.

I don't have any of the bad habits you guys have (knuckle cracking, nail biting)

But I do tend to be overly clean and tidy, if that can be seen as a "bad" habit.

I don't think any of use will. I know i have stop numerous times. Slowly selling of my collection only to start back again. Its the most addicting habit next to cigarettes.

Slowly selling of my collection only to start back again.
If you have a habit of ...getting back into old habits, don't sell of your collection when you think you're going to stop. Simply keep what you have and don't buy new things.
Because re-buying what you already had will always cost you more money than it initially did. ;)

I bounce my legs constantly while sitting anywhere (except my right leg while im driving). Its annoying cause I always get asked if Im nervous, axious, enjoying the music, or if im a drummer. Im almost always none of these things.

Now that I have a son though I can just plop him on my lap and bounce away and no one says a thing. Im seriously thinking of making another one once he's outgrown sitting on my lap just so people leave me alone when im having a good sit.

I do that to some degree, I'm at least always twitching or bouncing some appendage.

I do most of what has been mentioned so far.

Crack various joints
Bite nails
chew/eat skin around finger nails
collect/packrat multiple things
smoke cigs
bounce legs/tap fingers/etc

i'm sure there are other things.

I don't want to sound rude but it seems to me most of you must be really nervous individuals with all those bad habits. Things like cracking joints, biting nails and bouncing legs are the result of not being able to sit still. There's more people who find that difficult than I thought.

I'll admit, i can't sit still for long periods of time. As a matter of fact i am bouncing my legs as we speak.

I think it's been proven from some news magazine (maybe 60 Minutes) that Americans get less time off from work than almost every other country in the world (less some Asian countries)?

So that may make us a little more high-strung than most as a drawback. ;)

I'm one of the exceptions to that. I'm quite a lazy person and love sitting for long periods of time. My bouncing legs have nothing to do with being bored or antsy. Just something i've always done.

It can also be annoying when i'm at someones house and their furniture isnt level (tables and cabinets are the worst). Often we'll be sitting enjoying a conversation and then everyone will stop talking to find out where that sound is coming from and its usually me bouncing my leg and rattling around some dishes or silverware. Although it is fun to pretend I dont here anything and continue doing it on purpose afterwards.

Not true at all. I'm one of the most laid back people you'll ever meet. I just happen to crack my knuckles because it makes them feel good.

I dont bit my nails but I am constantly clipping them. I clip them down every day. I have no idea why.

Count me in with 'bouncy legs' as well.

Nah, it doesn't. It's kinda like, I dunno... Chewing, but lightly. Imagine chewing gum. Then, chem gum as 'gently' as possible. That's what I do with my tongue.

I have far to many to list. My most recent would be having sex with a complete stranger in my car in a public place yesterday evening. IN hindsight bad idea very bad idea luckily wasn't caught but I was definetly thinking with my smaller head. Besides bone headed mistakes like that I cut my nails with anything handy, usually my hands, i just pull. I can be very impulsive. I crack my knuckles alot. and umm... like I said to many.

There's this (http://www.rfgeneration.com/forum/index.php?topic=5872.0) thread, which kind of got turned into a "guns thread" but it's over a year old now.
Other than that, I don't recall there ever being a thread for the discussion of guns.

I have a bad habit......

I strip music CDs and any other usable media case like them for parts to replace broken game cases. I literally hunt around the apartment scrounging for anything with a usable jewel case. You wouldn't believe how many brand new music CDs or PC software titles that have cracked or scratched cases or cases with nasty stickers on them that are lying around. :P

I do that too. Every CD I own that is not a game CD is loose in a binder. I generally just throw away broken/cracked cases instead of re-using them though.

I'm a constant nail biter.

As far as other habits go, I talk to myself when I'm alone (or to my dog) and am a habitual collector.

Fortunately, I do a fair job of controlling myself and have kept myself from habitual smoking or gum chewing because of my addictive personality.  Additionally, I keep my collections down to fewer things, instead of lots of things... Video Games being the prime one.  One collecting sector I've refrained from is trading cards and Star Wars.  I've seen wealthy people break the bank on those... let alone someone like myself.  Even in video games I get divided between classic and modern games.  Either way... if the games are good, you can't go wrong with either!

I just picked up 3 packs of new jewel cases with 24 in each, I've used 40-45 of 72 already. It gets harder to buy them sometimes, as there are so many "slim" cases sold and so few full sized ones available anymore.

Not sure this is a bona fide "bad habit," but I prefer to stand when watching TV or playing video games.

This habit can make for rather awkward situations when I'm a house guest.

"Ummm... are you sure you don't wanna sit down to watch the show? there's plenty of places to sit, you know."

"Thanks anyway, I'm cool."

I think it stems from spending most of my adult life in jobs involving standing and walking around all day, and not feeling fatigued at all at the end of my shift. That, and the 15 to 20 miles of hiking I do a week.

Necromancy is a claimed form of magic involving communication with the deceased – either by summoning their spirit as an apparition or raising them bodily – for the purpose of divination, imparting the means to foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge. The term may sometimes be used in a more general sense to refer to black magic or witchcraft.

The word "necromancy" derives from the Ancient Greek νεκρός (nekrós), "dead body", and μαντεία (manteía), "prophecy or divination". The compound form νεκρομαντεία is itself post-classical, first used by Origen of Alexandria in the 3rd century CE. The classical Greek term is ἡ νέκυια (nekyia), νεκυιομαντεία in Hellenistic Greek, rendered as necyomantia in Latin, and as necyomancy in 17th century English.

In Renaissance magic, necromancy – or, as it was frequently called during that period, nigromancy (adapted from the Latin nigr-, niger, "black") – was classified foremost among seven "forbidden arts".

Isn't porn the whole reason the internet was created? Everyone looks at it whether you want to admit it or not... I do!

Anyways I suppose collecting games could be a 'bad' habit but hey its what gets my blood pumping and I enjoy it. Smoking is another bad habit I have, I really only smoke when I drink at bars so I really don't smoke too much but its still a bad habit none the less. I'm probably am a borderline alcoholic although I have cut back since my girlfriend wants me too (Even though she drinks her face off when she drinks, not fair). I crack my neck every morning during my morning stretch which is apparently bad according to this thread. I also love to play practical jokes on people on a daily basis which usually people are cool with but sometimes it backfires, I just love to make people laugh but sometimes it doesn't come out as planned. Other then that I don't feel like my bad habits are too taboo to must people. I still got some things in my life I got to fix.
