Title: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Zimbacca on July 18, 2008, 06:25:22 AM Oh my fucking god I can't wait.
I don't think I've been this excited for a movie. Ever. They played the trailer before The Dark Knight and I squealed and flailed around like a giddy school girl. http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/watchmen/high.html Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: logical123 on July 18, 2008, 09:06:57 AM Cool!! I've never read the graphic novel, so the next time I'm at the library, I'll have to check it out! :D
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: hXd on July 21, 2008, 09:38:55 PM This looks sick.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: TraderJake on July 21, 2008, 11:40:35 PM I've never read the graphic novel, but the preview made it look pretty damn interesting. Between that and The Spirit preview, there were some good previews.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: UNFORGIVINGPAIN on July 23, 2008, 11:26:24 AM I also watched the trailer before Batman Dark Knight last night. I can only say WOW!
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on July 24, 2008, 04:18:20 AM The comic is amazing, Allen's best imo. Hopefully the movie delivers.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Beardcore84 on July 24, 2008, 09:59:35 AM I am so fucking stoked for this.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: dotDarkCloud (dDC) on March 04, 2009, 08:44:10 AM 2 Days!
I'm considering going to the midnight showing tomorrow... maybe... perhaps... Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Sirgin on March 04, 2009, 09:38:06 AM I read a review about this in the paper. They said it was nice.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Tondog on March 04, 2009, 10:33:20 AM I haven't read the comic, but I do really want to go see it sometime. All the Twitter peeps I follow who have seen it already have nothing but positive things to say.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Pop Culture Portal on March 04, 2009, 10:20:06 PM One of the best graphic novels I've ever read. Can't wait to see the movie...it's been getting alot of good reviews.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Tondog on March 05, 2009, 11:31:55 AM Oh, here's a little something for you Watchmen fans:

Post by: Kimoosabi on March 05, 2009, 01:04:36 PM Initially I read a lot of good reviews, but have more recently read a bunch of disappointed ones. The fact that they changed the ending, and ultimately the entire point of the story, leads me to believe I'm going to be disappointed.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Izret101 on March 07, 2009, 09:19:41 AM The movie is almost 3 hours and apparently there was like 40 mins cut from it.
Also i haven't read the graphic novel but apparently that is incredibly dense and amazing reading. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Tondog on March 07, 2009, 11:24:00 AM A friend IMed me and said anyone who hated this movie is a moron. Just thought I'd let you know. :)
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Rajaat the Warbringer on March 07, 2009, 01:05:24 PM I had never even heard of The Watchmen until I saw a movie trailer... and the trailer did nothing to really make me want to see the movie :(
I'm, sure I'll watch it when I'm bored one day and it comes on TV. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Izret101 on March 07, 2009, 08:16:07 PM A friend IMed me and said anyone who hated this movie is a moron. Just thought I'd let you know. :) Its funny because there were 2 reviews in the paper about this. One said that the movie in no way lived up to the original comics. And apparently the director knew it never would and said so. And the other went on about how people are up in arms in both camps. The hardcore comics guys who said it was a slandering and watering down of the original concept with its horrid music(the songs were good but the song choices just didn't really seem to fit into a movie like that well they do but in a way that made me snicker.) and the punching of holes in walls and standard superhero fight scenes.(paraphrased) And "the internet fanboys" who just loved the movie because of the visuals. IMO the movie was lacking in the music department. Had stunning visuals. A hot naked chick. awesome story. I want to pick up the graphic novel still and i think this is one of the cases where since i did not read it first i wasn't let down by anything and instead will be thrilled with a slightly different experience. Also the movies ending is apparently different and shittier than the books. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: BadEnoughDude on March 07, 2009, 09:35:51 PM Sara and I are going to see this tonight. We almost decided to make the trek to the IMAX, but it was a bit to expensive ($16 each!!).

That is all. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: y2richie on March 08, 2009, 08:06:32 AM I read the book a while back and enjoyed it. I haven't heard or read a good review of this film yet. Everything I've seen says it falls short and is disappointing but that often means I'll like it! I'll go in open-minded and hope I enjoy it.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Izret101 on March 08, 2009, 10:30:09 PM Yea it only got like 2 strs or something rediculously low.
Deserved more than that Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: dotDarkCloud (dDC) on March 10, 2009, 05:19:51 PM It was surprisingly good. Despite a few cuts and some changes, it was fairly true to the comic, which impressed me.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Wolfman Walt on March 11, 2009, 03:28:11 AM The director's cut will expand on that and restore some of the more important cut stuff. One of my friends who disliked the comic actually felt it was the most faithful adaption ever.
Honestly - having read the original Hayter script with Nite Owl killing the villian and it taking place during the Bush administration, no fan should open their mouth for ill word against Snyder. No matter what you think of his ability, the man championed to keep it as faithful as possible sans squid. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Shimra on March 12, 2009, 01:59:14 PM I thought it sucked. It was fun but it's a bad movie-- kind of like how 300 was fun but a bad movie. There were a bunch of parts in the movie that were either poorly done or completely corny (a perfect example is Dr. Manhatten's revelation which involves a comparison of turning oxygen into gold with something that is a very common occurrence). Also the ending to Watchmen was poorly executed (the way the revelation was revealed while they were sort of fighting sort of not fighting was extremely stupid). It could have been done much much better. On the plus side Rorschack was unbelievably awesome and any scene with him was pretty damn amazing.
I never read the graphic novel, but as a stand alone movie it could have been much better. The story was good but the execution was not. One more thing... I'm tired of this random slowdown in fight scenes. Give it a break. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: den68 on March 13, 2009, 09:03:06 AM I thought it was really good. I vaguely remember reading some of it 20 some years ago but for the most part it was all new to me. I'm reading the book right now. I'm only about a third of the way through but so far the movie is a pretty faithful adaptation. A lot of the dialogue is word for word from the book.
As for the music, a lot of lyrics are quoted in the book so far I've come across quotes from Elvis Costello's "the Comedians" which I don't recall hearing in the movie and Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" which is covered by My Chemical Romance in the closing credits. I liked hearing some Leonard Cohen too. I haven't finished the book yet so I can't say if the changes to the ending will piss me off or not. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Shimra on March 14, 2009, 01:40:03 PM I really want to read the book and then give the movie another viewing. Most people who read the book absolutely loved the movie because it was an extremely faithful adaptation. It'll probably help me understand a lot of the things that seemed extremely corny and unnecessary.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Wolfman Walt on March 15, 2009, 03:49:11 AM Nothing in that story is unnecessary. Just because you feel it isn't, doesn't mean it is, though the fact that you apperently didn't understand might have done with your level of enjoyment. You may not understand why it's neccesary, but it is.
Quote Dr. Manhatten's revelation which involves a comparison of turning oxygen into gold with something that is a very common occurrence Sigh... It wasn't that hard to see why he felt it was rare. Infact, he even explained it. The OCCURANCE of life is common, but the occurance that it is that EXACT person is not. Out of all humans in the world, all the sperm fighting for that egg, it was that ONE in a million billion trillion chance that you are who you are. Attention to detail.Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Out of all humans in the world, all the sperm fighting for that egg, it was that ONE in a million billion trillion chance that you are who you are. Attention to detail.Dude... spoilers. THE REST OF MY POST WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS The way I interpreted it was he was referring about how The Comedian screwed her mom and ended up creating something beautiful. That's not too rare. What you said makes more sense, but the way Manhatten delivered the lines made it seem like he was being more general or something. I dunno. And when I said extremely corny and unnecessary I meant stuff like the godawfully awkward sex scene that was unbelievably corny, and her hitting the flame button when he orgasms. Completely unnecessary to add stupid crap like that. Them having sex may be important, but that scene was ridiculously corny with elements that shouldn't have been included. You have to understand that as a standalone film from the perspective of someone who didn't read the novel a lot of the stuff was just weird. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Wolfman Walt on March 16, 2009, 09:27:03 PM SPOILERS!!!!
Again - he explains it pretty much word for word for what I say. The idea that Laurie's mom was almost raped in the 50's and then forgives the man and falls in love with him enough to have sex with him and then the idea of millions of sperm - etc etc is something he speaks of. Let me quote you exactly what he said. "And yet, in each human coupling, a thousand million sperm vie odds by countless generations against the odds of your ancestors being alive; meeting; siring this precise son; that exact daughter until your mother loves a man she has every reason to hate, and of that union, of the thousand million children competing for fertilization, it was you, only you, that emerged." It doesn't get anymore self explanatory. Quote You have to understand that as a standalone film from the perspective of someone who didn't read the novel a lot of the stuff was just weird. It wasn't added. It's not even that corny. It's even symbolic how much Dan is tied so into his hero persona. Without it, he's not whole. Notice how Dan cannot have sex with Laurie, but once Dan is complete and has adopted the persona of Niteowl and her of Silk Spectre, he is able to have something that becomes perfectly natural to us. There's more to address in that complaint, but honestly? I don't feel like explaining EVERY little thing that you didn't get. If these are genuine questions, I'll do my best to answer em, but if these are just complaints, you can do your own research. It wasn't that it was weird, it's you're approaching this with the wrong mindset. Most movies aren't ment to be visually engaging with symbolism in every frame and action. I repeat. Nothing done in this movie, much like the comic, was done without purpose. If you found something weird or didn't understand, it's probably because you didn't catch something or didn't put something together. It's not the movie that's weird or bad, it's you not being able to connect the dots. Don't blame the movie for your failings as it has nothing to do with reading the comic. I know many people who have yet to read the comic who understood alot of this. Again, not your fault for not getting all this - I have no doubt it takes repeat viewings, but don't try to put negative quality to this film because of things that are your own fault, especially when in the first case it was explained verbatim. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Shimra on March 19, 2009, 05:43:44 PM Wow... you lost all credibility you had going for you when you said the ship firing flames when Dan orgasms isn't corny.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Wolfman Walt on March 19, 2009, 09:45:27 PM Says the guy who has the "The World Ends with You" icon.
See, I can play that game too. I logically explained why it's in the story and you just wanna pass it off with a personal attack on "My credibility." Honestly? Piss off. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on March 20, 2009, 02:41:30 AM I still need to see this damn movie. I wanna argue too... :(
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: hXd on March 20, 2009, 02:55:19 PM I really enjoyed Watchmen, good story and characters, great visuals, and lots of blue penis. Can't go wrong with that. :P
I actually enjoyed the song choices, granted they were placed at odd times in the story. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: dotDarkCloud (dDC) on March 20, 2009, 10:59:56 PM ... I liked hearing some Leonard Cohen too. Yeah, that was a pleasant surprise for those of us that stayed in the bloody theatre until the end of the creditsTitle: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Shimra on March 22, 2009, 09:30:41 PM Says the guy who has the "The World Ends with You" icon. See, I can play that game too. I logically explained why it's in the story and you just wanna pass it off with a personal attack on "My credibility." Honestly? Piss off. You are trying to argue that a chick hitting a button to fire a flame from a ship while a guy orgasms in a semi serious movie is extremely important and necessary. I have a The World Ends With You avatar because I like the game. Clearly... that comparison makes no sense considering I'm not arguing the game is good and it is essential and important in the gaming world. I just have an avatar because I like the game. You lose credibility because you are arguing that something is absolutely important and necessary and anyone who disagrees is wrong. It would have made more sense if you claimed I lost credibility because I claim that the fire is unnecessary and corny and anyone who disagrees with my sentiments is wrong. That would have been a much better analogy. *Edit- I changed this post a lot to better convey my thoughts, but for the TL:DR I used the phrase 'you lost credibility' as a snide way of saying I disagree and this post was just a confusing ramble. But really I'm sorry it came off as a super dick comment; it was my way of exiting a debate I didn't see an end to anytime soon. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Wolfman Walt on March 23, 2009, 06:46:25 PM I suppose that's fair enough. Lets agree to disagree.
Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: Shimra on March 23, 2009, 07:59:21 PM Sounds good. And sorry the post came over completely dickish. I tend to do that then realize way too late how much of a jerk I was.
Also, I think if I do see it again (which I can guarantee will happen, just a matter of when) I'll be in a better mindset as to what the movie is and enjoy it much more. Title: Re: THE WATCHMEN!!!!!!! Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on March 27, 2009, 07:16:09 PM Eh, I wasn't that impressed. The change to the ending was dumb.
