Neutral Milk Hotel only an 8.5?

That's my favorite album of all-time :)

Haha, yeah. That's my friends favorite album as well. I completely understand how some people absolutely love it. And don't get me wrong, I love it. But you know, 8.5 isn't a bad score at all lol.

No, it's really not. I'm just biased. I would probably give 'Oh Inverted World' and 'The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place' something closer to an 9.0 too. Two of my favorites as well.

This isn't super inflated scores like videogame sites give, a 5.5 is average at best here.

I understand. Just pointing out the albums that I would give higher ratings to. I would give lower ratings to others, but I won't point those out :)

Ahh, this looks like fun. I'll start with one I recently gave a listen to:

Phoenix Bodies- Raise The Bullshit Flag

Score: 9 out of 10

Fast paced, relentless grind-tinged punk-core that grabs you and doesn't let go until the end (which isn't that long, the songs are relatively short). The only reason why it wasn't a 10 out of 10 is because the songs tend to sound identical after a while, but if this is your cup of tea (as it is mine) then you'll love Raise The Bullshit Flag. Their new material, which can be streamed on their MySpace, www.myspace.com/phoenixbodies , (there's supposedly a new song every friday) already has the notion that the songs will differ from each other, which might earn their next album a 10/10 from me, we'll see.

Imogen Heap - Speak for Yourself (6.5/10)

This one has a little room to improve. It's not really my style of music, and I really only got it because I LOVE the song "Hide and Seek," but I will certainly give it the chance to grow on me.

Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day (8/10)

Great southern-style alt-country/rock album. "The Deeper In" is quickly ascending my list of favorite songs.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (10/10)

Everything about the album is incredible.

Watchmaker - Kill. Fucking. Everyone.

You have to be really pissed off to fully appreciate it.

8/10... perhaps. Can't make up my mind on this.

Vampire Weekend- Self Titled

Score: 8/10

In an almost ironic fashion, Vampire Weekend craft catchy, bouncy indie-pop like fellow NYC spirits Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the difference being VW tend to look to reggae and/or Rhythm Of The Saints-era Paul Simon as inspiration rather than the heavy Talking Heads comparisons CYHSY are prone to getting.

All of that aside, it's a catchy albums full of memorable songs, but it's the ones that don't stick that make the score what it is, because there aren't enough of them. I would say to any casual listener, you would probably adore half of the album and the other half you could do without. But I still recommend the album anyway, you might like more of the album than I do. I'll admit that I also went into this album skeptically, being as though they've gotten a lot of attention recently, but I feel they delivered on their hype by making a solid album.

Flux EP- Bloc Party

I know it isn't really an album or whatever, so I'm not going to score it, but it's very good. Shows the bands diversity. Flux itself is one of the most unique Bloc Party songs and shows the band's ability to play a wide range of songs. Emma Kate's Accident is a phenomenal mellow song where Kele's voice really shines.

Flux EP- Bloc Party

Flux itself is one of the most unique Bloc Party songs and shows the band's ability to play a wide range of songs.

In a bad way though. The way the vocals distort reminds me of Cher 10 years ago and the music sounds like a rip off of New Order.
I downloaded the vinyl release which doesn't have Emma Kate's Accident, but a remix of Where is home, which is also far from good.

I'm very dissapointed with this album after the brilliance of a Weekend in the city.

Oh no, my reply didn't post! Ughh, anyway this is essentially what it was.

I really enjoyed Flux the more I listened to it, much like how Strawberry Jam (Animal Collective) grew on me. I can't say I immediately enjoyed the song, but after multiple listenings I can definitively say that yeah the song is fairly good and does show Bloc Party's diversity. Oh and Emma Kate's Accident is phenomenal and you should give it a listen if you can find it. Also awesome there is another Weekend in the City fan.

Album Reviews

The Mars Volta- The Bedlam in Goliath
7.0/10
Best Songs-
Metatron, Cavalettas
The Mars Volta is a pretty interesting band if you haven't heard them, which judging by most the people's taste from this forum I'm sure you've heard them. That being said, TBiG is a bit heavier than their previous work which isn't necessarily a bad song. The album is overall very good, however some of the songs feel too similar to previous work and the rest of the album. Overall though, if you are a fan of The Mars Volta be sure to pick this one up.

Islands- Return to the Sea
8/10
Best Songs-
Humans, Volcanoes
This bad boy caught me off guard. I had only heard of Islands a bit and decided to check them out. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised. The Indie band provides us with a unique spin on the genre with a somewhat tropical feel for some songs yet overall an extremely pleasant sound reminiscent of the new Vampire Weekend (even though Islands was before VW) type of sound. Very good stuff here.

Animal Collective- Danse Manatee
2/10
Best Songs-
None, they are all terrible
What the hell is this crap? This isn't even music. Perhaps Juno should have listened to this crap before calling Daydream Nation just sound. You've come a long way Animal Collective.

The Killers- Hot Fuss
6/10
Best Songs-
Jenny was a Friend of Mine
Brian Flowers is a tool. This album was before that was completely obvious, and for such a cocky bastard their debut was not even too phenomenal. It doesn't provide us with anything more diverse than what has already been seen by several other bands, and in actuality though some of the songs are good, many aren't. To their credit though, Hot Fuss showed that The Killers were on the right track for a while. I don't even know why I felt the urge to review this one.

I'll do more later and try to make some of the reviews more diverse than just Indie rock for the most part. But I will try to review most of the new albums coming out such as Vampire Weekend etc. I just need more time to listen to them.

Mara'akate- Mara'akate EP

Score: 9/10

Such a shame that these guys broke up. Mara'akate were a progressive screamo band that eventually gave birth to Phoenix Bodies (Guitarist Colin's then-side project), and their music was ahead of their time. This EP, one of the only releases they put out, is a fantastic display of their genius. The only problem I have with this, is the fact that it's an EP. It's way too short in overall length (the songs themselves aren't even that long either, most clocking in at under 2 minutes), but on the other hand it's not too much of a good thing. They come in and attack with their ferocious, abstract screamo, and leave before you even know what hit you.

Jason Collett - Here's to Being Here

9/10

This just came out recently, and it fits right in with what I have been listening to lately. Collett is a former member of Broken Social Scene ("on hiatus" is the official status), so you can hear that Calypso-like influence on some of the music. There is also a distinct Jayhawks influence (although not as much as his previous album), mixed with the almost Dylan-esque quality that his voice contains. He's a thoughtful songwriter, but not pretentious or whiny. I don't usually fall this hard for albums this fast, but this one has really taken over winamp for the last few days (along with a couple of his previous albums "Idols of Exile" and "Motor Motel Love Songs"). Certainly worth a listen.

Best songs: Henry's Song, Through the Night These Days, Not Over You, Somehow

Alright sorry for the lack of updates. I need to listen to albums multiple times before I feel content enough to review them.

And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead- Source Tags and Codes
7.5/10
This is one of the weirdest 'indie' albums I have ever heard; not weird in the sense that Animal Collective is weird, but weird in the sense of wow these vocals are terrible, this is pretty heavy, what the hell is this extremely mellow part doing in this song? That being said it would appear as though the album would not be good. On the contrary. Source Tags and Codes succeeds in being a highly ambitious album and one with a lot of personality. Sure it isn't the most outstanding album of all time, but it is certainly unique and serves as an example of how bands should go about creating a heavy, yet friendly, album. Does it warrant the 10/10 Pitchfork awarded it? No, but it is a good album in its own right. Take note you emo piece of crap bands.

Radiohead- The Bends
9/10
It's Radiohead, and it's The Bends so you already know this is an exceptional album. If you didn't know that already where have you been for the past few years? The Bends contains many of the same themes as Pablo Honey but also shines some light regarding what is to come from this exceptional band. There are many songs that clearly showcase the raw edge that Radiohead is capable of conveying; but there is also the more mellow side to the band which is best exemplified by such sons as High and Dry. If you have not heard The Bends yet, I highly encourage you to go out and pick up a copy.

Animal Collective- Water Curses EP
8/10
A bit of a departure from Strawberry Jam, yet it's still the same old Animal Collective we (I at least) know and love. The title track is one of Animal Collective's most intriguing and well constructed works. It's nearly impossible to describe the song so I'm just going to say listen to it, the song is wonderful. Furthermore the rest of the EP consists of a bit more traditional Animal Collective style songs, however these songs seem to be a bit more well constructed than those of such previous works as Feels, Sung Tongs, etc. The sense of a somewhat sharp contrast in tones is less noticeable, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing in this case.

Wolf Parade- Apologies to Queen Mary
8.5/10
Spencer Krug is a name that should not go unnoticed in the indie music scene. This man is a genius, and Apologies to Queen Mary is one of the first examples of what to expect from Spencer. With such tracks as Shine a Light, Modern World, and Grounds for Divorce it is hard not to crack a bit of a smile at the overly upbeat and inviting style of Wolf Parade.

Band of Horses- Cease to Begin
6.5/10
Band of Horses is a very good band. Cease to Begin however is not the best example of their work. Some of the songs, such as the opener Is There a Ghost, are phenomenal; however the rest of the album feels lacking. I know this could be the subject to much debate but it seems as though the album doesn't flow together and what we are left with is a somewhat underwhelming experience. Is it all bad? No, but it isn't all that great either.

M.I.A.- Kala
8.5/10
I don't particularly like rap, and I'm not a big fan of reggae. I am a fan of this album though. I am somewhat clueless how M.I.A. managed to pull of such a wonderful little album. With this album M.I.A. managed to construct harmonies with some unusual instruments which create one of the most unique, yet undeniably enjoyable sounds you could hope to find. The album has political undertones which reflect M.I.A.'s personal life and thrust issues which may have gone unnoticed to the listener directly into their face. In this sense though M.I.A. is not thrusting her views on the listener, she is simply using it as springboard to convey her artistic expression.

Album Re-Reviews

Neutral Milk Hotel- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
10/10
I was way to critical of this album before. Even though it is a relatively simplistic album that should not, and it does not, hinder the fact that the album is amazing. Jeff Mangum hit the nail on the head with this album. Mellow yet riveting at times, no album has more soul and personality that this one. In every sense of the word, this album is perfect and should be heard by everyone. Fun little trivia note, I only consider two albums perfect, this one and Sgt. Pepper's.

Alright I know I didn't review some of the albums that I said I was going to but I will most likely review them shortly. I will DEFINITELY review Vampire Weekend and In Rainbows very shortly.

Panda Bear- Person Pitch
9.5/10

Really awesome album, can't really describe why I like it so much. It's just something you need to hear for yourself. I'll come back later with a better review. But for now, just listen to Bros.

Vampire Weekend- Vampire Weekend
8.5/10

Pop, reggae, indie, I'm not quite sure how to describe this album. It is unique, but not in the sense that it will be overlooked due to this fact. In all honesty, this album caters to everyone with it's twangy sound, up lifting themes, and just all out rocking energy. The most astonishing thing about the album is the relative simplicity of all the songs. None of the songs have the most profound guitar licks or bass tracks, but what the artists managed to do was combine all the instruments into a unison that most albums lack. Never too fast paced, but never taking it slow, this album is one of the few gems that has come out so far this year.

All Out War - Condemned to Suffer

This is how Metalcore should always sound like. Heavy, crushing mayhem with blasting drums and a hysterical vocalist dooming the world in every single sentence. Their most relentless effort came with Condemned to Suffer, and it's well worth picking up/downloading.  9/10

Here's some ska reviews!

Less Than Jake - Losing Streak

Pretty damn good punk-ska album (since LTJ is more punk than ska in my eyes) that still holds up to this day. Not LTJ's best effort (though their fans would have me hung for saying that), but it's up there. Listening to this album brings back so many memories of being in high school.

7/10

Less Than Jake - Hello Rockview

THIS is LTJ's best album. It's far superior to Losing Streak in almost every way. Production, musical skill, lyrics, etc. However, there are a few problems with it (the closing track in particular). It points to their downturn into generic craptacular pop-punk and signing stuff like Fall Out Boy to their label. However, their brand of pop-punk in 1998 is so much better than pop-punk of today.

8/10

Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between

Holy crap wow! I just got my ass blown away by Tomas Kalnoky and the rest of Streetlight Manifesto! They are probably the best band in ska today. I highly recommend checking them out if you're a fan of punk, hardcore, or ska. Thanks to my brother for getting me into this band.

9/10

Radiohead- Ok Computer
10/10

Here it is. The ultimate album, my absolute favorite album is right here, and I've owned it for a good 2 or 3 years. Why did it take me so long to realize the brilliance of this amazing work of art? Well, until recently I never really listened to an album as a concept, instead I would listen for the 'singles'. Radiohead is an interesting band in this regard. Pablo Honey is composed of what I consider singles. However the rest of their albums are one huge concept that can not be broken into smaller parts and have the whole experience retained.
So what am I saying here? Essentially, to get the full experience of Ok Computer (as well as Kid A, HttT, etc) you need to listen to the album as a whole and not to each song individually. Though there are a few songs that can hold up exceptionally on their own (such as Karma Police, Paranoid Android, and Electioneering), to fully appreciate these songs they must be listened to in context.
That being said, Ok Computer is a monumental. It epitomizes how modern rock and roll should be. There are the melodic tracks and the adrenaline driven scores which keep listeners in awe and wishing for more. Ok Computer has a unique sound to it. Unlike a lot of contemporary rock albums that try to maintain one style, Radiohead managed to experiment with various forms of rock to great success. It is no wonder so many bands (such as Coldplay, Muse, etc) have been considered a rip-off of Radiohead circa The Bends/Ok Computer; with a sound that transverses so many different styles it's hard not to draw comparisons.

Yay I wrote a lot for that review. I've been listening to Ok Computer like crazy.

Gotta agree with you on OK Computer. Probably one of, if not the most, influential album of our generation. I remember the day my friend gave this to me in 1998. It was so weird and different that I didn't like it at first. It took me probably a solid year before I gave it another fair chance. It has been a staple album for me ever since.

J. Bannon- The Blood Of Thine Enemies EP

Score- 9/10

For those that might not know who J.(acob) Bannon is, he is the vocalist for long-running hardcore band Converge, the co-owner of Deathwish Inc. record company, and an artist/graphic designer.  On this one song solo effort to tides fans over until his long-awaited "Wear Your Wounds" album drops later on this year, Jake goes the minimalist route and crafts an 6 minute opus that is serene and terrifying at the same time.

I will warn that this is a very drone-y piece, and not for the easily bored. Since I'm personally a sucker for shit like that and I eat up all things Bannon-related I don't have a problem. TBOTE just misses a perfect score with me because it's only one song. Let's hope that Wear Your Wounds will get one when it arrives.

I went to look up J. Bannon on wikipedia but couldn't find the album you are talking about. I did however take a look at Converge, which I believe you have mentioned on more than one occasion and to my surprise Pitchfork actually really really really likes Converge which is crazy considering if it isn't indie there is a 97% chance Pitchfork won't like it. I should probably check Converge out sometime soon.

Oh and I've been listening to Funeral by The Arcade Fire. Awesome stuff.

Your best chance of finding Jake's solo stuff is on the Deathwish website, http://www.deathwishinc.com

Jake also posted a solo song he did a while back on the Converge website, http://www.convergecult.com  I'm not sure if it's still up there though, but if it is it's under the alias "Dear Lover".

I've been listening to this Los Campesinos! song called Death to Los Campesinos! pretty much nonstop which is a real problem. It's the first song on their cd and I can't get past it. No clue how the rest of the cd is but I may go as far to say this stupid little song is song of the year thus far.

Title: Re: Quick album reviews
Post by: Shimra on April 22, 2008, 09:57:18 AM
Alright, here's some awesome reviews.

Radiohead- In Rainbows
9.5/10
IMO this is the second best Radiohead album behind OK Computer. The atmosphere of the album feels a bit stiff, best exemplified by 'Bodysnatchers'. The album has it's fair share of both rock and mellow songs, each of which fits perfectly with the tone of the album. Perhaps the best song on the album is 'Jigsaw Falling into Place' though in all honesty there are so many awesome songs to choose from. This albums has a lot of singles, though unlike say Pablo Honey where the singles don't mix in well with the theme of the album, these do.

LCD Soundsystem- Sound of Silver
9/10
This album is an awesome mix of dance music with enough pop/indie influence to make propel the album towards those who would otherwise overlook the genre. Unlike the debut album, Sound of Silver takes a more pop oriented approach to the genre, cranking out songs which stand on their own and are easily accessible to everyone. Interestingly enough, and contrary to the nature of the first album, there is an emphasis on the lyrics which change good tracks into awesome tracks, ie. All My Friends.

Battles- Mirrored
8.5/10
This is interesting stuff. Not really all that electronic, not rock, not instrumental, I don't know how to classify this one. Mirrored is chalk full of tunes which are eccentric and full of energy. The songs, unlike most techno/electronic songs, do not consist of a simplistic formula; instead we are treated with pulsating and constantly changing tones.

Now that I think I've listened to nearly all the exceptional albums of 2007 I feel as though I am qualified to compile a best of 2007 list.

Best Albums of 2007-
1. Strawberry Jam- Animal Collective
2. In Rainbows- Radiohead
3. Person Pitch- Panda Bear
4. Sound of Silver- LCD Soundsystem
5. Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?- Of Montreal (I know I only gave this an 8, but it's a real entertaining album)

Best Songs-
1. All My Friends- LCD Soundsystem
2. Bros- Panda Bear
3. Fireworks- Animal Collective
4. Jigsaw Falling into Place- Radiohead
5. Uniform- Bloc Party

I suppose I'll throw down my top albums of 07 too...

Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in The Between
Lupe Fiasco - Lupe Fiasco's The Cool
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
The Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army

Here's a few album reviews:

Catch 22 - Keasbey Nights (1998, Victory Records): Easily one of the top five third-wave ska albums of all time. While the album was produced when ska-punk was the rage, it sounds like Catch 22 actually had a real interest in ska as opposed to being a punk band that had horns like Less Than Jake or Goldfinger. I also like how they don't just stick to ska, but instead dabble in more acoustic and jazzy things as well. Aside from the top-notch musicianship, the lyrics are quite dark, which is definitely not something you see on most ska albums. The tunes are also delivered with a huge sense of urgency as well, which might be attributed to the fact that the album came out just as most of the band was graduating high school. Overall, it's a damn fantastic album with a few flaws (mostly in production/polish). 8.5/10

Streetlight Manifesto - Keasbey Nights (2006, Victory Records): (Apologies for the long review, but I have a lot to say about it) Wait, I thought I just reviewed this album. I technically did, but this is a re-recording of Keasbey Nights. For those of you who don't know, Streetlight Manifesto is a band formed after lead vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Tomas Kalnoky left the band to go to college. As stated, this album is a re-recording of Keasbey Nights by Streetlight Manifesto. Why did they re-record it? Their record company, Victory Records, wanted to re-release Keasbey Nights with a new cover and leave the audio untouched, which angered Kalnoky. In addition, he thought the original sounded like crap and thought that by re-recording it, he could make the ultimate version of Keasbey as it was meant to be heard originally. So, he told Victory not to re-release it and that he would re-record it with his current band.  In essence, he wanted to be like George Lucas (but not rape the original and completely change it)...

Now that we have the backstory of this album established, let's talk about the album itself and how it's different from the original. First of all, the production is far superior on the new album. The original sounded raw and like it was recorded on a shoestring budget, but the new one sounds very polished without losing the energy of the original. Second of all, they added some new elements to the album, like a new bridge/lryics on Dear Sergio. They also changed some of the instruments and made a few musical tweaks here and there. In addition, the hornlines, bass, and overall instrumentation is much more tight on the re-recording.

Personally, I think this version of the album is better, but there are many people who feel the original is better and that Kalnoky just made this for the money. However, he doesn't care if people think that because he just didn't want the original to get re-released with nothing new and it didn't matter him if a single copy of this was sold. Well, Tomas, I bought one, so you at least have me to thank. 9.5/10

Too bad such great albums are on Victory...God I hate that label.

Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between (2007, Victory Records) - This album is so good that in 44 minutes, it solidifies Streetlight's spot as the best ska band today, SHOULD inspire a 4th wave of ska, and cause a huge resurgence in ska's popularity. I say should because Victory sucks ass and only cares about promoting their shitty screamo acts. This album has a bit of everything, be it ska, punk, jazz, metal, hardcore, or even a little dash of emo. I order everyone to buy it and like it. If you don't, well then you're not cool.

10/10

God, I can't wait for Streetlight's next album...though it will probably take 3 or 4 years since Kalnoky is such a damn perfectionist.

Oh my God. I found a leak of At Mount Zoomer by Wolf Parade. This is the most amazing album of the year. I am definitely legitimately going to the store and purchasing this thing as soon as it has an official release.

Also, amazing album cover.

Wolf Parade- At Mount Zoomer
9.5/10
I love Spencer Krug. I think anything Krug is associated with is amazing. Needless to say, I have been highly anticipating Wolf Parade's new album. Obviously, I couldn't wait. Do I feel selfish? Yes. Do I feel dirty yes. Do I like what I hear? Absolutely. At Mount Zoomer is an indie rock anthem. Krug has developed his song writing skills and produced one of the most ambitious indie rock albums since Funeral.
At Mount Zoomer is an indie rock album, but Krug is no longer restrained by his indie rock instincts; what we are left with is a fully developed, fleshed out, and imposing album. The album contains a more raw, robust sound but manages to maintain many of the pop ideals which made Apologies to Queen Mary such a hit. Each song is multilayered and unique. From Soldier's Grin to California Dreamer to Kissing the Beehive, there is not a single song which hinders this album, though at only 9 songs that isn't saying too much. Lucky for us though, Wolf Parade has managed to provide us with a nice mix of short, medium, and long songs to keep us happy.
So is At Mount Zoomer worth the wait? Absolutely. If you are a fan of Wolf Parade, Spencer Krug, indie rock, or music, do yourself a favor and get this album.
