Title: Worst Game Ever!
Post by: Cobra on October 11, 2007, 05:16:57 AM
Our Bottom Rate Games (http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/toprated.pl?rank=bottom) list dose feature some god-awful games alright. However as X number of votes must 1st be cast for games to appear on here there are no doubt even worse ones. Ones so bad that they never even went worldwide or became well known.

This is where we can dig them up and expose them for what they really are. So lets find out what is the worst game everyone has ever played, and why. What made is so bad.

I'll go 1st by digging up Perfect Assassin (http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=E-061-S-13330-A)!

Perfect Assassin is an extremely bad adventure game for the Playstation.
Graphically awful, and poor sluggish gameplay. Throw in a boring story to boot and you've got Perfect Assassin.

But wait it gets worse. Despite being a game of the 32bit CD era, the game has no save feature whatsoever. Instead you have to use passwords. Now this is where the game gets really bad. Like with most adventure games you talk to others and collect various items to help you in your quest. Well the password system uses generic passwords that store NOTHING. Each area has a single password to it, so you will retain nothing, no items, no events, nothing. This makes everything and anything you do in this game pretty much pointless as you find out really early on you obviously have absolutely no influence on the story at all. The only way you can even keep items you find for later parts of the game is to play it from start to finish without being killed.

So that is the worst game I have ever had the misfortune to play, and one I am glad to no longer own.

Look forward to the next game someone want's to dig up.

Shit, man.  That game sounds shitty.  How does a PS game have a shitty save system like that.  I would expect it on maybe NES or Genesis era games.  Anyways, one game that gets my vote is Tomb Raider for the Dreamcast.  I quit playing that game because the controllers are soooooooo HORRIBLE.  The game functions like shit.  I like this thread.  Good idea Cobra or whoever you are this week.

All of the Atari 2600 "World" games. Earthworld, Waterworld (I'm pretty sure it was called that), Airworld, and Fireworld.

From what I recall, they were adventure style games that were part of a contest (1st warning sign) that Atari sponsored.

Basically, the items you collected had to not only be obtained, but arranged in the right 5 or 6 item "combination lock" in order to get you the code you needed for the drawing. This out of about 20 or so items that you'd find in each game. I think you had to take a photo of your TV screen as well.

Peeeuwww! :P

Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation on the Dreamcast

As shaggy said, the controls are awful. It makes the stick seem like it's 8-way rather than analogue (It probably is 8-way, I don't know). I couldn't put up with it for too long.

Medieval Lords for the PC is also rather bad.

God do i wish i could remember the name of the game.

It was a 16 Wheeler racing game for PC.
It had no sound. No colision detection(drive over a bridge fall thru the bottom), and you could go off endlessly into the horizon till you came back around to the other side of the racetrack. No AI.

Did some hunting thru the database and found the game:
Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing

Hey wiki has oodles of info on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Rigs:_Over_the_Road_Racing

I remembered it from Xplay ;D

Yea, that's the name of it.  That game was horrible!!  As for Tondog,  FF VII put the Playstation on the map.  Without it Playstation wouldn't have gotten to the PS3.

Hey both of those groups have songs on the Burnout soundtracks that i like.

And Garden state was a kinda funny movie....

And if FFVII was so shitty why was one of the video they used to show whast the PS3 could do a modernized version of the game?

If they remade that game i would buy it for sure. That was my biggest gripe about it was graphics and cameras.

The only bad things about Big Rigs are the glitches...
-The comp didn't even race you (a patch made them race you, but stop just before the finish line)
-your truck instantly accelerated backwards, and had a higher speed going backwards too
-you went as fast going up and down terrain as you did on flat straightaways
-Drive through buildings

unfinished, definitely, but that gives it charm

Now my borefest is Sonic Shuffle.  A Mario Party knockoff that wasn't fun.  The gameplay was slow, the animations were slow, and long loading screens for each minigame.  The assortment of minigames weren't as fun as Mario Party (which I don't even like in the first place), and you realize that Dr. Eggman is possibly the biggest jackass in gaming.  Even Bowser is civilized enough to play tennis and take kart race challenges from Mario.

Anyways, Sonic Shuffle == long waits + unrewarding gameplay == not fun

It's supposed to be a kinky FMV about some chick trying to get a job in the big city or something I played a few times and I can't even tell you whats going on.

Besides featuring terrible voice acting, it's not even an FMV. It's more of a powerpoint presentation where you view still frames with horrible dialong dubbed over it. Most of the pictures are grainy, and those that arent have terrible compression quality.

On another note I wish I knew how to make backups of 3DO games, I put in the disc and my pc doesn't read it as anything

A game that comes to mind that sucks something horrible is Silver Surfer on the NES.  You get killed REAL quick in that one....LOL  One hit death...UFF!!  Although I like the opening song IMMENSELY.  It's one of the best tunes I've heard on the NES.

Ultraman!!!

That's what I was trying to think of yesterday. The SNES beatemup was absolutely useless. From what I remember it had one punch and one kick and probably no combos. But the opponent had all sorts of moves which killed you straight away. It had boring graphics which seemed to have no life at all.

I rate it 2.4/1000

Title: Re: Worst Game Ever!

I'm not ripping on anything I haven't played (I.E. FF7)...and we all know Leon's hate for anything Microsoft. So for him to throw Halo 2 under the bus as his vote for "Worst Game Ever" (despite this "emo" tangent) is shortsighted (and getting us off-topic) to say the least.

So I figured suggesting the closure of this thread may be reasonable before it further degenerates into a fanboy love-hate thread like so many others already do on our site.

So is there a chance we can we legitimately get back on topic? I personally like knowing what games to avoid without having to decipher the sarcastic babble.

Emo bashing aside, I guess my entry would be Illusion of Gaia for the SNES.

Boring story with little to no buildup, boring characters, boring weapons, boring spells. Just a long, boring game as a whole.

It's probably not the worst game ever. Clearly there are better choices for that title, but instead of rehashing the obvious candidates (ET, Eternal Warriors (Geneisis), Samurai Showdown (Genesis), Shaq Fu, etc) I just thought I would go with something against the grain.

Title: Re: Worst Game Ever!

I couldn't name the worst game ever, as that's as subjective to each person's taste as the best game. I can say that Indy 500 for the R-Zone sucks pretty badly though. :P

Not as much so I don't think though. I mean when it comes to things we like about a game it really depends on personality this is true. But some games are really bad. I am surprised that people are brining up mainstream games, and unless they haven't played many games I would have to say they KNOW they have played far worse games.

Things that make a game bad are pretty much disliked by most. Lets say MK Trilogy for PS1. It's not the worst game, but would constantly freeze. Now no one is going to enjoy that part about the game unless they had serious issues. As it is actually about the worst game ever however people should really think about it before hand, the pros and cons rather than simply games they dislike because of personal taste in game style.

Shaq Fu sucked... I'm a big fighting game fan, and mastered  all the characters to make it threw with every one as I do to see all the ending as I always do. But it was pretty horrible.. not the worst game, but pretty damn bad.

As for Samurai Shodown however I actually liked it. It thought it was a pretty good port of a game from a much more powerful system. Sure the Mega-CD version really put it to shame, but the Mega-CD was a lot less limited and this was one of those rare title on Mega-CD that showed off it's actual superiority for stuff other than typical CD content.

I own this played it and hated it when i was younger.
I don't remember specifically which one it was but i think my favorite part of the game was the music that played when you were saving/loading.

Also don't diss Shag Fu!!!
It is a diamond in the rough! It's just in a bit rougher shape than most.... and still may actually be coal...

My vote for worst game ever would have to be War Gods on PS1. It's a 3D beat em up with little to no control over the characters. You can just about rag your way through the first couple of fights before you severley start getting your arsed kicked. The slow down and bad camera angles just add the shear crapness of this game.

Street Sk8er 2 for PS1 was pretty shitty.

As was Grind Session, Sony's first skateboarding game. But Grind Session had an amazing soundtrack so I'm almost willing to forgive it.

Or what about Earthworm Jim 3D? The game that pretty much destroyed any hope for a future EWJ game.

Actually, the worst game ever is this:

What do I like about Big Rigs? EVERYTHING.

-Going infinity miles per hour...IN REVERSE! Then coming to a dead stop in zero seconds.
-The fact that there is no limits to the map. You can drive anywhere off the map into the gray void where there is nothing.
-No matter how long you take, or how how fast the computer gets to the finish line, you're always WINNER.

I could go on and on about Big Rigs, but I have other things to do with my life...

ok, it's probably not the WORST game ever, but Dragon-The Bruce Lee Story for the Jaguar is absolutley horrid.  It looks like a 16 bit game despite it being on a "64-bit" console, controls like a car underwater, and jumps in diffuculty from out of nowhere.

Despite all of this, I still find myself playing it from time to time.  I think I may be a masochist.  Or incredibly emo.  I'm not sure.

I get it though, it's flaws are what makes it so different and has actually given it a fan base.
So while it wouldn't be my choice it's kinda like a really bad movie that is so bad it's good.

agreed. Circus Maximus was pretty horrible. I picked it up because it was cheap and had 4 player multiplayer. I figured it might be fun for game night, after trying I found that would most likely not be the case.

Rune: Viking Warlord for the PS2 is a stinker. From what little of it I recall my character blended in with the background a lot and there was much pointless swimming.

E.T. sucks ass.  I know of more frustrating games, and it isn't as bad as most people make it out to be. (RtFM foo!)  That still doesn't change the fact that it is of faulty design due to severely short development time to mete production deadlines.

For those not already in the know of why it's hated by so many, read this little sniplet from Wiki

Quote
Reputedly coded in just six weeks, this game was rushed to the market for the 1982 holiday season, and it was based (very loosely) on the popular E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial movie. The game was hard to play, simplistic and took place mostly in pits that the player had to somehow levitate out of. It was expected to sell millions, and even director Steven Spielberg seemed excited about the idea of having his hit movie made into a video game. Word of mouth spread fast but the video game sold extremely poorly during the holidays and beyond. Expectations were so high for this game by Atari, that warehouses were filled with cartridges for the would-be rush of buyers running to get the game. It turned out that the game was such a huge disaster, that millions of unsold excess cartridges ended up buried in a landfill in the New Mexico desert.[32] The game is thought to be one of the main causes of the video game crash of 1983 and contributed to how Atari went from the US's greatest games publisher to a laughing stock. It is widely considered to be one of the first big video game flops ever.
The scale of the E.T. disaster has become almost legendary and the game is still well known nearly 25 years after its publication, despite the fact that few gamers today will have played the game. E.T. was ranked in 21st place in GameSpy's "25 Dumbest Moments in Video Game History".[33] More recently, the game (and its creation process) was parodied extensively in an episode of the G4 TV show Code Monkeys.

Yet not a mention of Double Dragon V on the SNES.

It's not the worst game ever but it's rather close to it.  Atleast in the top 10.

bad games.... what about all them evil arcade games that are either so hard of have such a tight time limit that they literally just steal you money.

Double Dragon for instance with bad collision detection you just cant get anywhere without multiple continues yet it became a classic???

i cant remember its name but the Namco shooter arcade game that gives you an MP5K and a shield comes up when you press the pedal, its like death in 2 minutes at a quid a go utter crap.

C&C 3 for the PC played the demo its just shit nothing new in fact not even as good as Tiberian Sun and that about7 years old.

and as i cant think of any more i will have to go for all them shitty EA "update" sport games that come out ever year and get bought in the 1000's by pikeys i fucking HATE FIFA games! :)

I don't get it though, back in the 16bit era, EA Sports titles absolutely rocked.

Motocross Mania 3 for the PS2/Xbox. This game brings a new level of suckability only a whore or a Hoover can match. In fact it's so bad it has earned a place in my most hated games list on my staff page. Worst $2.99 I ever spent on a game.

Broken gameplay, graphics a decade out of date, bikes that handle like limos in a slalom course, pop-in that looks like Mr. Scott having fun with his transporters, and that's the good points of this game.

Mighty Hits (http://www.gamegavel.com/Mighty-Hits,name,102279,auction_id,auction_details) for the Saturn.

The game looks like absolute crap from the screen shots, but it was a multiplayer lightgun game, so I was all excited at the prospect of playing a lightgun game with up to 6 players at a time.

The reality would be, it looks even worse than it did in mags, and is just a collection of very poor lighgun mini games, and to add the final insult to injury, it is only two players at a time, any more players requires you to take turns!

Honestly, I'm not even sure what I'd consider my least favorite game of all time. Red Alert for the Virtual Boy was pretty shatty, but that system is at such a disadvantage I feel bad voting for it. To be perfectly honest, I dislike more aspects of Halo than any other game that I can think of:

-The Metroid rip-offs - From Master Chief's visor to the "flood," to the space-pirate-looking enemies, to the ending, I saw Metroid everywhere. Not tributes to Metroid, but blatant rip-offs of beloved Metroid elements.
-The shield system - Seriously, shields belong on ships and giant robots. NOT foot soldiers. It was an original concept for the time, but it wasn't a GOOD concept.
-The overall tone - So we have space marines, and aliens, and they're pretty rough and rugged. But... what in the world is up with the little guys? They're weird and they laugh and scream all the time, and it makes no sense as to why the aliens let them tag along. Seriously... why are they there?
-The weapons - I can't remember a single weapon feeling right. Not a single shot that I fired felt like it packed any kind of punch. Maybe it's the animation, maybe it's the sound effects, I don't know.
-The multiplayer - Bad shields and bad weapons don't make fun multiplayer. The extreme lag on every sever I played the PC version on didn't help either.

Of course, not a lot of people agree with me. As long as they can justify their opinions and aren't just accepting it because "everyone loves Halo," then I'm fine with it.

Dude, I know there's a lot of Halo hate on this forum. And  granted I have no idea how the PC version (presumably Halo:Combat Evolved) plays, but "worst game ever"? Give me a break. If you want to put it in a category of "Most-hated" game ever, then feel free to do so and I'm sure many people will chime in and you all can have a Halo hate-fest together to your heart's content.

And for the record, if you see comparisons to Metroid, I'm sure you can then compare Metroid to ITS predecessors and find where it "borrowed" various elements as well. And then you can go back...and back again...and back ultimately to Pong.

Most of your points are completely subjective opinion. Which is fine. But for a thread labelled "worst game ever", don't you think that being more objective would be a better approach?

I can honestly say that ET had innovative gameplay, even if it was poorly executed. Shaq Fu isn't meant to be taken seriously, and it's a funny concept that goes as far as it can, even if that isn't very far at all. Halo, however, didn't bring anything new to the table, at least anything that I felt was noteworthy. It's just another generic shooter.

If you just want "wonky gameplay," I recently played Toy Story (SNES) and couldn't believe how awful it played.

Title: Re: Worst Game Ever!

Halo rips off of Warhammer 40k much more than it ever could rip off of Metroid...though you can say that for alot of sci fi games (I'm looking at you Starcraft.)

Worst game ever? Well, you'd be hard pressed to find something worse than Big Rigs: Over the Top Racing. Seriousily. Atleast Superman 64 (another good choice) or Aquaman have actual play elements. This game is so terrible it can barely be considered a game.

It is definitely subjective. I'm just saying that you could make a case for it being overrated. However, you can't really say that Halo in and of itself is a bad game, because it is not.

Serious enough to have spent at least a few hours on it back when I first got my 360. It's not addicting enough to go for all the achievements, but it's got some redeeming qualities. I find the art style particularly neat, even if only as a good piece of advertising.

I don't know if I've contributed... but I'll say a few games I sold (this says a lot because I hardly ever sell games). I know it's not worst game ever but I try not to buy awful games.

Timesplitters 3- Single player was nothing compared to TS2. TS2 required strategy, stealth and is still the hardest FPS I've ever played. When it takes 6 hours straight without dying to beat Robot Factory because your tactics require constant stealth and persistence you know they made a good game. TS3's story mode was just run and gun and easy even on hard. It was also straightforward. Fun, but not what I hoped for. I regret selling this since it had a phenomenal multiplayer and mapmaker.

Phantasy Star Collection- Beat Phantasy Star. That was awesome. Didn't like Phantasy Star 3. Phantasy Star 2 was fantastic but once I got to Dezo the dungeons were nothing but gigantic (and I mean enormous) mazes. It became too tedious. I shouldn't have sold this either.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance- It wasn't Fire Emblem lol. When I got the game I wasn't really into in depth customization so I sold it. Don't really regret it.

Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls- Don't know why I sold it. It was alright.

Baten Kaitos Origins- People kept proclaiming how amazing the battle system was, better voice acting, and a great story. I saw none of this. The battle system was pretty interesting but 15 hours in I still didn't understand it-- that's... well it shouldn't take longer than that. The story by the time I quit was uninteresting and involved the main dude just running around and doing stuff for the empire. Hell I don't even remember the story that much and I played it over the summer. And the voice acting was still bad. This doesn't really bother me at all, but I don't really know why anyone would say it has good voice acting.
So... I sold it. Don't really regret it considering it didn't seem like I was going to get used to the battle system any time soon (the original had my favorite turn based battle system so this was a letdown).

Yoshi's Touch and Go- It was fun. It would have been great if I didn't have to do the stupid baby mario stage every time I played. The actual Yoshi part was way better. I really found doing the baby Mario stage every single time I wanted to play incredibly annoying.

I think that's most of them. I don't plan on selling any games anymore though because typically I end up selling good games I'm slight disappointed with >_>. As for bad games that I've played... there are too many which is why I didn't want to make a list. Action 52 comes to mind immediately though.

Oh, talking about the Advance, you reminded me of a crappy game. I love how nice 16-bit remakes look on the Advance, but quickly realised how bad a 32-bit remake looks due to the lower resolution.

Now this brings us to Advance Guardian Heroes. There was nothing Advance about this game at all, and it almost brings a tear to one's eye with how incredible the original was, and for it to receive such a poor sequel the likes Sonic has never even suffered. Anything and everything good about the original has been thrown out the window in an effort to make the worst sequel ever. Then throw in a translation job so bad reading it hurts your head and you have this game. AVOID!

50% of the stuff coming out right now is worse than TS:FP, so yeah...

I agree. It was a good game and I shouldn't have sold. The single player wasn't even bad, it just wasn't up to the standards set by TS2.

I ended up playing the original later and it was cool and all but I spent more time worrying about which units to optimize and bringing them to where I wanted than progressing the story. It's really ironic considering that's what the Tactics Advance series is all about. Funny how preferences change over time.

Shadow Man 64 is shit as well
Shadow Man on the N64 was pretty well received and one of Acclaim's biggest successes. :P

Poor Acclaim... hope Midway doesn't join 'em.

I hope so too. The more smaller publishers go bankrupt, the larger the dominance of those few big publishers that are left. :(

Last Action Hero (SNES). Horrible gameplay.

Personally, the worst game I've played in recent years was probably Secret Service for PS2. It's like the best most awful game I've ever played. It's the gaming equavilent to an Ed Wood movie.

They must of been happy enough with it. I mean they even bothered giving Zack in DOA 2 the Shadow Man outfit.

For a smaller company like Acclaim, I'm sure it was a great succes.

Quote from: Wikipedia
To date Shadow Man has sold around 1 million copies on every platform it was released on, making it one of Acclaim's greatest success stories.

Well i was about to say E.T. but that would be too easy; therefore my nomination for worst game ever has to be *drum roll*............the NES version of X-MEN! now here's a grade A let-down. i remember at age 12 looking at the "comming soon" section of nintendo power magazine with my friends going on and on about how cool the game would be....fast forward a few years...."where are wolverine's claws?" "storm can't fly higher than that?"
in short the game itself was difficult, dying was quick, and i don't recall ever getting to a second level. it took years probably just to get the licensing straightened out before being released. good job nintendo /golf clap

One I should really mention is Postal. Having enjoyed its sequel so much I was interested in finding out how it all began...

Honestly I dare anyone to play this as you really have to play this thing to really feel how bad this is. Even though it was a digital download I don't regret wiping its existence from my hard drive with no way of ever playing it again.

Now I actually enjoyed the first one as mindless slaughter.

Today I learned of the worst game ever created. So my vote has to go to it.

First off, I feel really weird responding to a 3 year old post.

Secondly I am just pointing out something to further the thought on this. As this is a "online" post I don't want people to think I am being argumentative just to disagree.

I only played Postal a couple of times on a friends pc way back in the day when it was first out and haven't seen it since. If I remember right, I think timing had a great deal to do with the greatness of this game. I was really into pc gaming at the time and always thought that this game....well, I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a game. And I'm talkin' about Postal here. Sometimes, there's a game, well, there's a game for a time and place. It fits right in there. And that's Postal, in 1997. And even if it's a bad game - and Postal was most certainly that. Quite possibly the worst in 1997, which would place it high in the runnin' for worst all time. But sometimes there's a game, sometimes, there's a game. Aw. I lost my train of thought here.....
