Title: European championship football
Post by: Arrrhalomynn on June 08, 2004, 06:42:43 AM
I know this is a longshot, but is anybody here going to follow the European championship? I'm not that much into football (or soccer, for you yankees), but I will cheer for the Netherlands and even watch the matches. Tuesday the 15th we'll have our first match against our nemesis, Germany.  We'll win with 1-0 8)

I'll be honest and say that I had no idea this was even going on.  I do hope that the Netherlands wins as well, but only because they are cooler than Germany.  And because Beetlejuice is on the Netherlands' team.

I wish soccer (or football for all you silly europeans) was covered more here.  I always liked the sport, but it is never in the spotlight over here.  Only football, basketball and baseball, sometimes hockey.

Even hockey hardly gets any coverage in cities like Cincy.  But, I totally agree.  More coverage of soccer would be a great thing, and it seems to make sense, since it is played by more kids than any other sport in this country.

Ha, england. I laugh at you.  The Netherlands will get way further in the tournament than you.

And that is strange considering we have 2 hockey teams here.

Soccer/football is a sport that I always liked playing more than watching.  Of course I like to play every sport known to man so......

Well, i'd like you to get through the opening stages, but in my predictions I've placed you third.

I think you will lose to Germany, draw with Czech Republic and beat Latvia. I hope you beat Germany, but I don't think you will.

I predict that England will finish 2nd in our group, losing to France. I don't think that Englad will make it past the semi's (of course every part of me wills them to make the finals!) but I think that France will win the competition.

I don't think we'll lose from Germany. We haven't been playing well recently, but germany played even worse. Czech Republic is pretty good indeed. I'll be happy if we get into the second round though. I don't really care how we get there.

And France will probably win indeed. Again....

It's funny. As an England fan, it sometimes is more important to beat Germany or for Germany to lose, rather than win a competition.

For instance, I will always support whichever team is playing Germany. The same applies for Argentina. Every fibre of me, wants Argentina to lose every match they play.

That's not weird at all.  As an Ohio State football fan (American football, now), there is a certain team in Ann Arbor that I don't even say the name of, and no matter who is playing them, I root for that team.  This Ann Arbor team must lose every game, no matter what - even if it means Ohio State ends up having a lower ranking because of it.

So, I can completely understand.

Just out of curiosity, how would M losing give OSU a lower ranking?

Hey you people, this is about football, if you want to talk about other sports, start your own thread! thieves!

And I love to see both France and Germany fail. In fact, I might even find it more important that france and germany lose, than that the Netherlands win.

Yes, I was talking about football.  I do believe the thread is about soccer, though.

;)

Soccer is an English word, as is football.

Football predates soccer by a few centuries though.

Soccer is a corrupation/abbreviation of Association, as in  Association Football.

In the same way that some people say Rugger as an abbreviaito of Rugby Football.

heartbreaking England v France result. I predicted a loss, but to lose with both goals in inmjury time was harsh. Still, france are a world clas team, and I am sure we will beat Croatia and Switzerland.

Holland v Germany tonight. Go HOLLAND! :)

p.s try not to spit on the Germans this time, it puts me off my beer.

Haha, Rijkaard spitting on Voller was the greatest moment in the history of football.

I have a feeling we'll win tonight. Johan Cruijf said we would win, and he's always right. 2-1.

very entertaining match :)

glad Holland came back with an equaliser, cracking finish from Ruud. Holland were outplayed for the first 60 mins, but really shone in the last 10 mins

I was suprised to see that Freddie Starr was refereeing though

Lousy match, blah. Waste of time.

waste of time? Dude you just avoided  being bottom of your groups lead with a late equaliser, that's reason enough to feel happy.

No, wasted. We should have won. We didn't, waste of time.

Okay, so you lost again to Czhek Republic. :( But, you got to admit, apart from some poor referreing in places, it was one of the best football matches seen for a very long time! :)

Title: Re: European championship football

I liked it untill we got to 2-2. I really don't know what the coach was thinking. We got ahead, then he trades one of the best players in for some old geezer and starts playing defensive, while we have a poor defense. I just doesn't make sense.

Germany Lithuania was pretty good too.

You mean Germany v Latvia.

Yeah, well done Latvia. :D Shocking refereeing though, they deserved 1 if not 2 penalties.

Title: Re: European championship football
Post by: Arrrhalomynn on June 20, 2004, 07:30:55 AM
yeah, the referee's were lacking in both matches. If germany loses from czech and we win from latvia, we'll go on to the next round. It's not an unlikely scenario, but the czech might not feel like giving 100% now they're through to the next round anyway.

Congratulations! England is through to the quarter finals. It was a pretty good match, but I think both teams weren't playing great. Not as great as they should.

That goal in the Portugal England game was just sick (the one that tied it up 1-1).  I saw a highlight of it on Sportscenter.  That one goal might be just enough to get me watching the rest of the tourney.

And that's the end of that. A well deserved loss for us. In a boring match.

I'm not quite sure how they've managed it (although I have my opinion of diving and getting out of yellow cards for hacking people down :P), but bladdy hell Greece!  I do think Portugal will beat them though, Ronaldo is on fire.

how long does this tourney last?!

I guess I have to hope Greece wins then...  not that I really care in reality though.
