Title: My Saturn & NiGHTS Story: Surprise, Frustration and Victory
Post by: Cambot on August 11, 2007, 10:10:17 PM
Upon reading about the upcoming Wii NiGHTS game, I became interested in the franchise, having heard good things about the original back in the day, but never owning a Sega Saturn.

Recently, I found a Saturn at a thrift for $8.00 (as pictured here). (http://"http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y139/ckeene/sstrn2ji4.jpg") Problem was, it came without the AV cord or any controllers. I got the S-video cord for $4.99 from one site, and since I was tracking down NiGHTS into Dreams, I thought I had better order a 3D controller to go with it. I found the game listed "used: no box, no instructions" at www.squaredealonline.com (http://"http://www.squaredealonline.com") for $14.99 and a 3D Saturn controller for $9.99. I bought it figuring that was pretty fair for a game in such high demand at the moment, with complete copies going for upwards of $40.00 elsewhere. And really, I wasn't trying to "collect" the game, but I really just wanted to play it. I also got Panzer Dragoon which was listed "no box, no instructions" as well.

Well, my package finally arrived and I was surprised to see Nights came in it's original box complete with the original 3D pad in addition to the extra one I ordered. Panzer Dragoon also came compete, and everything was in excellent condition!

So now it was time to test the Saturn with my new controller. So, for some reason, I grabbed one of the other Saturn games I'd been collecting over the past year or so, Mr. Bones and went through the date/time menus to see if the drive would fire up. It went to the CD player interface screen and said "the disc drive empty"...

...nothing

All it did was click 4 times and never spun. So I took a screwdriver, turned the thing over and noticed a sticker there from Sega saying the unit had been refurbished. I took out the screws, removed the power cable from the disc drive, and lifted it out. I blew out some dust away, spun it manually a few times and put everything back together. Again, I tried it out, only this time with the NiGHTS disc. Went through the menus and again to the player screen, "START APPLICATION"

"Sonic Team!" Been working fine ever since.

Here's everything. Not pictured is the other identical controller.

Nice finds. I was looking into a Saturn collection myself.. must have been 5 or 6 years ago. The systems were reasonable, but hard to find complete, which is what kept me from ever starting that collection. At any rate, Nights was going for no more than $10-$15 complete then. Wish I would have gotten one (or 7 for that matter).
