Title: I guess the drought is over...
Post by: NES_Rules on August 07, 2007, 02:27:47 PM
For the past few weeks we haven't had much rain here in Ohio, but the last two days we finally got some.  Especially today, it was raining all morning and I didn't think much about it.  Then my neighbor calls and leaves this message "I think we have a disaster" and then she hung up.  I figured the storm knocked down a branch or maybe a tree.  So I look out my bedroom window and see brown, nothing but brown water flowing across the yard/driveway.

A short video I accidentally took because the camera was set wrong.  http://i76.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid76.photobucket.com/albums/j22/Mike_2_0_0_6/Flood%20of%2007/DSCN7032.flv

Believe it or not, there is a road here

The crick is overflowing just a bit

This was a dam I made inside the crick

My truck about to be washed away

Another part of the crick overflowing

There is supposed to be a bridge here

Here's the bridge again

After the water subsided a little bit:

Where'd the driveway go?

Oh, here it is all over the yard

Just to give you an idea of how much rain we got, the pool was about to overflow

After all that, I went inside to get a shower after walking through that water, only to find this

Yep, the septic tank backed up and it came in the shower.  The house has a real good smell to it now.

I hear you NES - I was stuck in that mess in downtown where Dead Man's curve was flooded and manhold covers were popping up.

What part of Ohio is that?

Still 100 degrees and dry down in Cinci.

Maybe I slept through the rain and it just dried in five minutes.

Northeast, near Youngstown.

Given that you worked for the engineer, you should jokingly call them and tell them to repaint your Edge Line. Why you're at it, recommend Item 644 thermoplastic.  Also, you should send those photos to the county engineer, county roads aren't supposed to flood over like that, save for 50/100 year floods. Perhaps it was one of those days, but you know, they're kind of rare.

Just so you also know, any damage caused by the creek to upstream houses could be associated to the dam or any other drainage route blocking structure, and you could be liable for the upstream consequences. Moral of the story, don't screw with drainage routes / creeks / etc unless you know you are not going to adversely affect those upstream.

//End being evil engineer.

Today it was 100 tomorrow it will be 99, I love Cincinnati weather. There is a heat relief coming soon... Friday it will be 90.

We've called the County and the State about it, but it deals with both so nothing will be done.  All the water from a 3 mile stretch of state highway drains into a ravine which goes into a 5 foot diameter pipe, which dumps into the crick in my neighbor's yard and then it flows through my yard and then they expect it to go into a 12 inch pipe.

And my dam was nothing special, just rocks piled up.  It didn't affect anything upstream (especially since the water destroyed it anyway).  And the one dam does help the situation because the way  the crick is, it splits at a 90 degree bend.  One way goes to pipe next to the road, the other way goes to a drain that goes under my other neighbor's yard and then meets up with the other pipe.  Normally, the water just flows past the branch off and 100% of the water goes to the pipe by the street.  My dam diverted some of that water into the other pipe.

I love your yard.

Sucks about the flood and backup.
