Title: Another Half-Life 2 Delay Possible
Post by: Lord Nepenthean on September 28, 2004, 06:39:41 AM
This is nothing set in stone, but Half-Life 2 could potentially be delayed another six months, according to this article (http://www.gamesarefun.com/news.php?newsid=2193).

Basically, VU Games (who will publish the game) is not getting along with Valve because of an old lawsuit Valve brought against them.  Once Valve gives them a release candidate version of the game, VU Games can take up to six months to actually put the thing out.  IF VU Games doesn't put it out, not only will Half-Life 2 be delayed so long that I'll be 90 years old and have arthritis so bad that I won't be able to play, but other games that use the HL2 engine will be delayed at least that long too.

This is all potential, though, so I kind of doubt VU Games will wait THAT long to put this game out....  but regardless, it could be even longer than they had been saying.

i dont see how this is adventageous for VU, I mean, isn't it better for them to make money now rather than in 6 months?  Anyway, if this does indeed happen, I will be pissed as hell.  Anyone up for a VU boycott?

That's exactly what I was thinking.  It just doesn't make sense.  The only thing I got from the lawsuit was that the suit Valve brought up two years ago is still resolved.  Perhaps if VU waits long enough, Valve will drop the suit?

Just Kidding. [smiley=laugh.gif]

Is it just me, or is there now no way HL2 is going to be a good game?  We have waited and waited after numerous delays such that we are expecting perfection out of this game, and there is no way that it can be perfect.  It will still be fun, but everyone will be sadly dissapointed by it, much like Doom III.  At least this is my prediction.

Yeah, probably.  That seems to happen a lot with games that are hyped up a whole lot and repeatedly delayed...  with the exception of some Nintendo titles.  Didn't Unreal II get delayed a few times?  That was never hyped nearly as much as HL2, but I remember thinking it was going to take the FPS genre by storm when it came out....  and then it kinda sucked.  I bet HL2 will be an awesome game, but after all these delays, does it really matter much anymore?

Well, with the original half life, it wasn't so much the game itself that made it awesome, it was the amount of mods that were available for the engine.  I think the same thing is going to happen here again with HL2. But this is a good thing.  I had way more fun with the mods than I did with the original game anyways.

Agreed.  Half-Life was a good game, but severely overrated.  Modding it, though, was definitely a huge plus, and the only reason anyone still remembers its existence today.

I saw Half Life on PS2 and the coolest thing about it was blowing up the walls on the level to climb inside. Other than that it looked terrible for a PS2 title and the aiming sucked.

I think you're thinking of Red Faction. I don't remember any destructible walls in Half Life.

HL2 is destined to suck. The game has been delayed so much that by the time it finally comes out, that year's Hoyle Casino will have better graphics and more innovative gameplay.

Ummm ya Evils right that was Red Faction...
But hasn't this game already been delayed for around 2 years?

Just over a year.  I think the original release date was August 25, 2003.  But that may have been after one delay.

Honestly, I feel sorry for game comapnies, because as games get more and more advanced, they take longer and longer to develope.  They really become the victim of their own innovation.

And, btw, a release date rarely has any bearing on when the programmers think that a program will be finished, it is merely a publicity stunt put forward by the PR depatment of the programming company.

We see quite a few game presentations, and when you see so many games on a regular basis, they tend to blend together. Even if they're all pretty decent games.

So last week when a representative from Valve stopped by to show us Half-Life 2, we were expecting yet another presentation. We were expecting perhaps some bullet points, a movie-style trailer, maybe a free pen. All he said was, “Play the game.” He may have said some others things after that, but we were a bit distracted. Half-Life 2 totally sucked us in. We just wanted to play, and we didn't want him to leave (or at least not take his computer with him) and that doesn't happen all the time.

Needless to say, we're completely stoked for release, and when we do get our copy, it's going to be the Collector's Edition, which comes loaded with the game on a special DVD and the retooled classics Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life: Source, plus a Half-Life 2 T-shirt and a Prima book. Both the Collector's Edition and standard Half-Life 2 are both available for In-Store Pickup.

In case i am the only  person subscribed to EVERY videogame related newsletter i thought i would share this.
EDIT This is from EBgames. Just incase anyone wants to know.

Screw them.  They won't let me view the page at all because I have cookies disabled.  I certainly won't be buying it there.  Do they have a release date set?

Hmm maybe this is why you can't view the other page either...
It is set to release... no date.

So all they're saying is that it is coming out and you can pay for it, but not when you'll actually get it?  Sounds kind of like Phantom a year ago....

You know, I haven't heard anything about this in a while.  Has Infinium finally given up?

Last I heard they had actually shown it off at one of the game shows.  I think they had a system at E3.

EDIT: Yep, they sure did:
http://www.infiniumlabs.com/mediacenter/gallery.asp

Seems that they haven't given up just yet.  The site says "Coming in 2005" on the front page.
