Title: Favorite mid 90's console
Post by: Arrrhalomynn on June 12, 2004, 03:03:51 AM
I know I'm probably missing some, but I'm sure everybody's favorite is in this list.

I prefer the Playstation. I know it has loads of crap games, but it also has loads of good games. In fact, it might have more good games than the total amount of games the Nintendo64 and Sega Saturn have.

Please explain why you voted for what :).

I know I'm fighting a losing battle, but my vote goes to N64.  It just had the good games that I wanted to play at the time.  Super Mario 64 absolutely blew me away and revolutionized the platformer simultaneously, Diddy Kong Racing was one of my all-time favorite racing games, GoldenEye is still the best console FPS ever in my opinion, and the system had other games that interested me too.

It always seemed to me that Nintendo gave so much more personality to their console than anybody else did in the mid-90's.  Sony seemed completely impersonal with PSX, the Saturn flopped before Sega could say "32X," 3DO wasn't even produced by just one company, and the other consoles were non-competitors.

PS1 got my vote, I played DOOM on it until I pwned it.  I knew nearly every level inside out in the end. There are two or three which give me trouble. with their teleports and mazes, but I can do them. Can't do the level Tricks n Traps though

I've only had a 3D0 for about 6 weeks. I don't suppose it will ever me my favourite, but right now it's ranked last, due to lack of experience.

3DO is a great console, but I just can't say that it's my favorite.  I absolutely love Road Rash, Shanghai: Triple Threat, and many other games on the system, and it does seem to have more personality than PS1, but N64 still gets my vote for #1.  I guess 3DO is my second pick.

N64 would probably come in 3rd for me behind also the Saturn. For some reason I love systems that didn't do so well. Maybe cause I have a friend who would buy the newest systems when it came out and I had cool experieces with them back in the day, when not many other people did. But for shizzle nothing tops Goldeneye.

Watching the Cyberdemon waste all the Hell Lords in the Tricks 'n Traps lvl is one of my fondest memories of gaming ever.

Saturn got my vote becuase I'm still a sega fanboy even though the Saturn is the most recent system I have purchased.  Akumajo Dracula X is a winner.

(I play more PSX games than saturn games though.)

I had to go with the Playstation.  There are four systems that I bought that I absolutley loved; Atari 2600, NES, SNES, and Playstation.
I was thinking about voting for the Neo-Geo but there were two reasons I didn't:
1) I don't think that it fits in the mid 90's category
2) I've never actually played on a Neo-Geo machine.  I've only played the MVS arcade machines.

i go with N64 basically for the 1st person shooters and terrific multiplayeer  but playstation does have 100s more good games than N64

Yup, multiplayer is a big deal.  I couldn't believe it when PS2 came out and there were still only two controller ports....  yet nobody seemed to complain.  BAD Sony, BAD.  Sure, multi-taps are an option, but what developers actually support those?

for PS2 multiplayer doesnt matter as much with online anymore besides 64 was THE multiplayer machiene that shoulda been there format not the fun machiene because it wasnt that fun all the time

If you asked me back then, I would have said Playstation.
It had the best sports games plus Resident evil and metal gear solid.

Now I would say N64.  Mario, conkers, zelda and banjo kazooie.  These are games i still play. I never play the playstation

Looks like N64 and PSone are neck-and-neck.  Well in my opinion the N64 had several good games, but the controller design was mostly only good for shooters (Goldeneye!!) but the PSone had so many great games.  It beat the N64 wih sheer numbers.

Saturn, I love the 2d games on this system

I guess PS because I still never have owned the other consoles on the ballot. I was still playing the Genesis in the mid-90's and had another friend in the late 90's with a PS.

I'm still not used to hearing myself even say mid- or late 90's...

I totally agree with Sony as far as the controller port issue with the PS2. 4 ports is a nice convenience, but there really just aren't enough 4 player games and enough people who play them  regularly to justify jacking up the production cost of the system. I liked the 4 ports on N64 and I bought some games for that system rather than their counterparts on PS1 just for the 4 player feature. But in the end, I only actually used the 4 player feature once or twice, if at all. If every family in the country had five or six kids then there would be a reason for 4 ports on every game system, but until then, stick with the lower price tag.

I voted Saturn as it has the best memories. The Jaguar only had a few good games (Alien vs Predator, Iron Soldier, Raiden and of course Tempest 2000) The Amiga CD32 still has a bad taste for as lots of games we're Amiga 1200 games burned on CD without a test, so they we're so buggy you were not able to finish them. The PS had some great games as well, but don't have the charm of Saturn. 3DO sucked in my opinion, it had some great games, but when I got my pal-player I found out it didn't had enough memory to play music in RRoad Rash grrrr. Oh and last the N64, I hated the system as I don't like 3D. Mario 64 didn't get me and Zelda was missing the feeling of the old versions, so no sweet memories to N64 (although still like Paper Mario, Sin & Punishment and Conker's Bad Fur Day)

I voted Playststion. It's the console that got me heavily back into gaming. I bought it in 1998 after not having bought a console sincle my Genesis in 1992.

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo, Crash Bandicoot, Abe's Odysee, plus a ton of great racing and fighting games not to mention all the arcade compilations.

I'm within 25 games of having 600 PS1 games. Great system.

Going with N64. Had quite the memorable amount of games. Mario, Zelda, Smash Brothers, GoldenEye, Blast Corps, and the list goes on.

I got a Playstation for my birthday in 1995 (or 1996, I don't quite remember) and, when I could, I played it at least a couple hours a day, usually 5 or 6, until the PS2 came out.  I played that for a couple years, then I started collecting.  Ever since I've been getting so many games I can just never decide on what to play.  Damn you, obsessive-compulsive disorder...

So PSX got my vote.

I totally missed the mid-90's console era. Two years ago, the Xbox brought me back to console gaming. Previously, I hadn't had a console since I sold my SegaGenesis collection in '95.

I would have to vote for N64, though, since I picked one up from den to be able to play some carts I picked up cheap (GoldenEye, Donkey Kong 64 (?), Perfect Dark, and Zelda).

psx for 3 reasons.

MGS
Grand Turismo
Vigilante 8

I'll definitely give you MGS.  That is one of the best games of all time.  It should certainly be higher on the Top 100 games list than where it is now (go vote on it to bump it up a bit if you haven't yet...  and vote on your other games while you're at it).

Vigilante 8 came out on multiple systems, including N64, so I can't really say that was a reason to own a PSX.

'As for Gran Turismo....  I understand why it was a huge deal, and why it is technically good, but it's not my cup of tea at all.  I didn't like it one bit.  Still, I understand where you're coming from.

I voted for N64, also tough choice between that and the PSX, but I just have more memories playing the N64...games like GoldenEye, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Smash Bros, etc, all come to mind ;) (including Vigilante 8, but I preferred the Twisted Metal series on PSX)

I liked the Jaguar for Jeff Minter's games.  And I liked the Saturn for the Capcom fighting games.  Hiiya.

I picked the 64, well, because I have always been loyal to Nintendo.  I love the games for the system.  I mean Mario 64 was fantastic and I don't remember how many sleepless nights I lost, along with my friends, to Goldeneye.  I liked the Castlevania game for it (I know most people thought it sucked).  Gauntlet legends, the Star wars games....I loved them all. Oh and the introduction of Mario Party...That was a great system.

The Playstation, however, didn't get my full attention.  I bought one for my girlfriend at the time (Now my wife) because she loved Tekken 2.  I remember trying to learn all the moves while she destroyed my ass "button-mashing."  So Besides that and GT2, Tetris Plus, and Wheel of Fourtune I didn't play the PS1 much.   Well, until I got Um Jammer Lammy.   That game was great.  That is the only fond memory of the PS1 that I have.   Um Jammer Lammy!
