Title: Huge Console Collection - Pics\Details
Post by: Marriott_Guy on May 14, 2007, 02:46:54 PM
Hello all.

I have been uploading my systems/games over the past two weeks and finally have some pic to share.  This first post show part of the general collection of my consoles and how it is set up.  Following posts will show the systems in a little bit more detail on the rather obscure systems.

If you would like a pic of the box/console for a particular system, drop me an email.  I'll be adding individual shots for each in my collection over the next week or so.

As always, comments and critiques are welcomed.  Thanks.

General game shelves, a Big Event arcade machine and my PC with 22" wide LCD monitor with Bose speakers.  On the shelves are the Genesis 3, the INTV (Intellivision III), a PSOne and the rare Sharp Twin Famicom.

Thanks Tynstar.  I have a few more pics to take of some other of the systems but my battery died on my camera. Yes - it is the Criterion edition of Silence of the Lambs on Laser disc.

Sweet collection!

Thanks Unforgiven!

That has to be one of the most impressive display setups I've ever seen. Hats off to you for pulling it off. I also like the foilage above the shelves, helps break up the sterility they would otherwise have and give it a nice aesthetic professionalism.

Speechless.  Flat out amazing!  I mean, I could identify a few of those obscure ones (very few), but just wow!

Thanks Tan.  It took a while and I have to say that I went to the DigitalPress site and wasn't really impressed at what I saw when it came to displaying a console collection.  I searched a bit and found the base shelving system at, believe it or not, Target.  I quickly filled the first one and went back and got the second.  Each shelving unit originally only had 6 shelves, exclusing the top.  I split each one to give me more space and added matching shelves to enable me to display 72 systems at one time (max - some systems took away from that number due to their height and requiring split shelves like the Vectrex).

I designed it to accommodate a bigscreen TV in the center of the two 6' x6' shelving units.  I put wiring harnesses on the back of each and power extension cables to each, along with composite, A/V or RCA extensions to every third shelf.  This enables me to play any system by simply selecting the power supply from a multi-switch (I needed 4 20- switchers) and the same for the video (I have 8 of the 10-switch Pelican video source selectors hooked up).  I have all of this hidden behind the foliage and the cables run along the back of the shelving system.  From there (in my current set up and space limitations, I went underneath the carpeting to my big screen TV (1 each of the composite, A/V and RCA cables).

The greenery was an afterthought, once I saw how this project was progressing and the cold affect it had on the general atmosphere of the room.  Plus, it did hide a great many items as described previously.  I still have to add a bit more of the it along the other areas to tie it all in.

Any suggestions or thoughts are always appreciated.
Thanks.

So those are all hooked up? Where are the wires on the back?

Damn man very impressive!

I like the most that every system is available to play at any given moment though.

@ Scott read his long post.

Like Tyn, my gaming collection can not rival yours in the Nintendo segment at all.  Thanks for the kudos though on the systems.  Now, if my game collection could get beefed up a bit, I would be a happy man.  I have around 800 games, but they span all these consoles, so it is hard get any one system as extensive as your's or Tyns's(monster gaming collection).

Yes - the wires run along the back behind the wood center posts (2) for each shelving unit, and then switching the power/video switch to the selected game system.  Then, I just select the video mode from my TV, unless it is an RF connection, then I have a A/B switch set up for my cable to dictate the source (A = cable, B = game).

This was not an inexpensive propostion at all.  The extension power/video cable cost a few bucks, not to mention the power switching stations and the Pelican AV switching stations.

It is cool though  :)

I have been wanting to do some thing like that but I haven't got around to building it yet. All the grey shelves in my room are all made be me and my friend or dad.

@Anthony - I did I just wanted to make sure I read that right since since I didn't see any cables.

Your setup is sharp and well presented.  I'm sure you will find that getting those game numbers up will be no problem compared to finding some of your rarer consoles.

Thanks for the welcome to the boards and the community and positive comments on the collection.  Yes - my game collection needs some attention, but I think I am going to take a little break since it took a while to get this initial set up done/working.  I like Tyn's grey shelves for the games - they can definitely hold allot of games/sizes.

Ghost - thanks.

For those interested, drop me an email/PM if you want the details/costs associated with the display shelving system.  As stated before, this was not an inexpensive endeavor - and no, I am not a millionaire, just a working-stiff like everyone else.  Total cost for the set up (shelving / lighting / wiring / switches / etc.) was a little under $2k (actually $1984.23 - that includes the fake greenery  :) ).  I tried to get a certain look/feel for displaying the systems while ensuring that I could play them at any given moment since I am at heart a 40 year old gamer (yes - I know - my lady friend says the same thing - I need to grow up someday - NOT!).

Thanks fellow gamers for the comments and, again, for the warm welcome to your forum.

That is really something! Are there any systems you don't have yet? And if so, do you have room for them when the time comes?
