Title: Consoles - Biggest Failures of All-Time
Post by: Marriott_Guy on May 09, 2007, 04:49:07 PM
Hello all.

I kind of ripped this topic from a recent GameSpot article (Worst Selling Consoles of All-Time).  This topic/poll is for US releases only.

My list, with #1 being the worst:

10. Nuon-enabled DVD game systems (Toshiba SD-2300, et al.)
09. Philips CD-i
08. Commodore C64 GS
07. Amiga CD32 (1993) - this did OK in the UK release
06. Memorex VIS (1994)
05. Commodore CDTV (1991)
04. Bandai Pippin @World (1995)
03. Pioneer LaserActive (1993)
02. Capcom CPS Changer (1994)
01. RDI Halcion (1984) - hands down the biggest failure of all-time

Your thoughts/list?

While your list is good I would go with stuff that had more hype. Saturn, 32X, DC, PS3 etc.

the turbografx should be in the top 10. it failed miserablely in the usa but flourished in japan. it was definately misunderstood. i love the tg-16 its really all i have been playing in the past 6 months. also too i am working on a turbo grafx site right now.

The TG-16 was cursed from the start with the whole FCC requiring it to have shielding it just did not need.  Also, the bland packaging did nothing for the system.

The PS3 is such a sucsess Sony plans to ship the PS4 next year.  Define sucsess for me please someone, I think the online websters is broke.

I agree with Tynstar, I never heard of most of the consoles on your list. I have a top 5 worst console list here. I believe everyone here has heard of them.

My list, with #1 being the worst:

05. Philips CD-i
04. Saturn
03. Jaguar
02. 3DO
01. Virtual Boy

I think your list is solid, but I think the list needs to be put in context.. Seems like most of your list failed because of absurdly expensive hardware or games, especially in the early to mid 90s when companies were trying their hands at CD-based consoles. They were absolutely still failures however.

I think most people identify 'failure' with systems like the horrendous run that Sega had (Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast) or the Nintendo 64 which, while successful, they are still feeling the effects of.

Wrong. That rumor was a for a redesigned PS3, kind of like the "PSX" they released in Japan, if you remember that.

Yeah, I still always say Jaguar. It's always more baffling when pure consoles fail. Especially ones that are more powerful than their competitors.
