Title: The ones that got away. Post by: BadEnoughDude on April 25, 2007, 06:51:52 PM Figured I'd start a thread about this. My guess is that almost everyone here has at least one story about something they found but didn't buy. At the time it seemed like a good reason, but looking back you just keep kicking yourself.
The most obvious one for me was about 3 years ago. I stopped at a pawn shop in Alexandria, MN for the first time one day after work. They had a great selection, and I went on to make numerous purchases there before it closed. That first time I stopped I was browsing though the PS1 games and came across an Enix RPG that I wasn't familiar with. It was close to $40 and I was pretty strapped for cash at the time, not to mention $40 for a game that I had never seen for sale anywhere else seemed a little steep. Yeah, it was Valkyrie Profile. By the time I figured out what I had passed on it was long gone. I like to blame it on the fact that I know next to nothing about what PS1 games are worth, but VP is a big-time exception. I still don't have that dang game. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: NES_Rules on April 25, 2007, 07:26:14 PM I found an SNES with all hookups and 3 controllers with around 10 games for $15 at the flea market. I looked through the games and they were all common ones that I had, so I offered $5 and she didn't take it, so I passed. I got to the end of the aisle and realized I should have bought it, so I went back and of course it was gone. I did end up seeing it on another vendor's table the following week, only it wasn't $15.

I just passed up a model 1 SNES deck at a pawn shop for $20. Not the greatest deal, but I didn't even bother to make an offer on it. I went back a couple of days later to pick it up, but it was already gone. Not a huge deal though, as I see them for around this price quite often. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Grim Fandango on April 25, 2007, 10:59:47 PM I think I missed Nascar Racing 2003 (http://video-games.search.ebay.com/nascar-2003_W0QQa14Z24223QQalistZa14QQcatrefZC12QQfromZR40QQgcsZ1135QQpfidZ1413QQpfmodeZ2QQreqtypeZ1QQsacatZQ2d100) at a Goodwill. Guy got there about a step in front of me as it was in a section that I unwittingly skipped, after finding the original TMNT, Tetris and Street Fighter II Turbo for pc.
Didn't know how much it was worth at the time; I was just gonna pick it up cause I wanted a racing game haha. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Ghost Soldier on April 26, 2007, 08:28:30 AM I passed on 30 CIB Sega Master System games. The store would have let me have them for .99 each. I didn't collect SMS at the time and passed. Years later I'm still kicking myself.

Would have gotten it for a steal, i refreshed with 2 seconds left I got a little bit too excited. Refreshed again only to have my spirits crushed and lost by about 33 cents. I would have gotten over it (even tho the guy obviously used a snipe program, he wanted the game more than I did) but the winner sends me Message about how he won because I was "too slow." Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Tan on May 02, 2007, 10:07:10 PM I freely admit I snipe all the time. Dog eat dog I figure on eBay. I don't need any lame-ass sniping apps to do it either. I pay $35 a month for 5.0 mbit broadband and I get my money's worth out if it. I don't see it any differently than employees getting first dibs, people sniping at flea markets when the sellers are unloading etc. I can either complain about it or do it and benefit by it. Dog eat dog. Sometimes I'll bid by only 1 cent early on so my name is in the bid list and it looks like I've been bidding all along. That makes the highest bidder relax their guard a bit having outbid me for a few days then BAM, my max bid with 2 seconds left. :evilhappy:
Sure it makes me a prick but I don't lose any sleep over saving big bucks and pissing off joe1256 from 8000 miles away. Help an old lady across the street and bail out a friend in need, then karma is balanced. :slick: I expect other collectors to do the same and most do whether they admit it or not. That's why we post cool auctions after we win, not during. ;) On eBay you can either be a Wolf or a Sheep, and that goes for both buyers and sellers. That's why so many people hate it yet are hopelessly drawn to it. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Grim Fandango on May 03, 2007, 12:27:39 AM Sure, the sniping itself is fine I guess; that I can get over. I just didn't appreciate the gloating email.

Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Izret101 on May 03, 2007, 09:48:09 AM When there is 2-3 seconds left i open my second tab and put my bid thru on the first second.
Sometimes if i want it really really bad and i am worried i didn't put enough up i leave a 3rd tab open with an even higher bid. Just in case ;) Like he said. Dog eat dog. I am at least decent enough not to compete with anyone on the site in such an evil manner. Yet >:-) Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Marriott_Guy on May 03, 2007, 06:49:42 PM I have to admit that I cheaped out on a great buy on eBay. I was looking for the PC Engine CD-Rom (Japanese release) to accompany my PC Engine. The unit offered was CIB as I always go for, plus included 5 Hue cards and 10 CDs . Though not an entirely obscure unit, it does carry a heavy price for CIB during auctions. One of my preferred sellers put one up for $100 + shipping from Japan (was cheap - $45 EMS). I tried to cheap out and offered him $70, knowing full well that this can auction for more than $250 + shipping for a CIB/working system and the games. Of course, I beat myself silly only 10 minutes later when it was gone. Another lesson from life for me :P
Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Izret101 on May 04, 2007, 06:46:23 AM I missed this because i thru it in my watched list instead of just bidding. :-/

Post by: Speedy_NES on May 04, 2007, 06:54:30 AM The only time I've ever not bought something that I later felt like I should have was a loose copy of Hammerin' Harry for 7,50 euro at a flea market. I didn't buy it because this was exactly as I got back into collecting two years ago: I had no clue it was a PAL exclusive, but it did interest me as I had never heard of it before. I left it there since the guy selling it defined the word douchebag. I already found a couple CIB copies of the game since then, so I don't care too much, but it's the only time I thought I should've picked something up shortly after leaving it behind.
Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: MrMark0673 on May 04, 2007, 10:08:21 AM I was talking with someone on Craigslist about purchasing a Racermate 2 package he had. It had the cart, dongle, racermate system, bike attachment, everything but the box. He was asking for $400, which isn't exactly a steal, but its a pretty solid buy. I had the money, but not the space, that thing is big. I'm a fan of buying stuff for systems that the general gaming public doesn't own (Prototypes, debug units, Bung products, etc.) and think this would have made a pretty nice conversation piece.

Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: BadEnoughDude on May 04, 2007, 05:06:57 PM I definitely use shady techniques on eBay as well. It's nearly impossible to win an auction if you don't these days.
I just have a problem with a snooty email after words bragging about their win. That's pretty low. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: eternalblue81 on May 05, 2007, 05:35:00 PM Back when I was pretty much just started collecting, I was searching for a couple Sega CD games I'd always wanted years ago on eBay. One obscure game that I remembered wanting went by the name of Keio: Flying Squadron. Of several listed on eBay, I found one complete one with a Buy it Now price of $75. Not yet being very familiar with Sega CD game prices, I passed figuring an obscure game like that could probably be found much cheaper. ::) I've only noticed one complete copy be sold on eBay for under $100 since then, and I curse the day that one got away from me too.
Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: DarthKur on May 06, 2007, 02:16:17 PM I missed out on a nice small lot of Atari 2600 carts made by Sega a couple weeks ago. They were Star Trek, Thunderground, Tac-Scan, Sub-Scan, Buck Rogers and Congo Bongo. They only sold for $13 which was under the max bid I was waiting to place at the last second. I got distracted and lost track of time burning some cd's. I had miss judged by a couple minutes how long it would take to finish the disk versus the auction ending. When I went to place my bid the auction was over. The really painful part is that I'm positive that I would've won because there were two bidders at the end that bid $13 exactly and the tie when to the first one that placed the bid. So that leaves no doubt that those would've been mine. I'm still very upset about it. :grrr:

Ouch! Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: DefaultGen on May 12, 2007, 08:00:06 PM Half the stuff I miss, I don't know what it is that I miss. At flea markets I constantly see myself competing with dealers who speed down one row as I go down another. The biggest miss I can think of is a Saturn lot on Ebay, poorly titled (Something like "old sgea game system with cables). It had around 50 complete Saturn games and a boxed Saturn, TONS of great stuff. Resident Evil, Panzer Dragoon 1, 2, and Saga, Albert Odyssey, Shining Force III, Dragon Force and a whole bunch of imports (The only one I knew was Castlevania SOTN, but I later found out there were a couple of rare ones that went for $50+ :( )
Anyway, feeling confident with my $370 snipe (the bid at the last minute or two was something like $90). I click "confirm bid" and... FIREFOX FROZE. It was the most painful feeling seeing all of those awesome and rare games drift away, and I knew i'd never own 90% of them now :( The damn lot went less than $200. I'll never know if I would've won with my snipe, but it would've brought me some damn comfort at least knowing my bid got in. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: OatBob on May 12, 2007, 08:12:29 PM tough luck, man... we all get our ups and downs
I've been beating myself up for this one for a week now. I did a past eBay search and found this poorly listed SEGA Dreamcast, Katana HKT-01 dev kit... and it didn't sell. I'm serious. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Dreamcast-Katana-Development-Kit-HKT-01-RARE_W0QQitemZ170101022378QQihZ007QQcategoryZ62054QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) Well, I contacted him, made an (embarassingly low) offer, and he listed it again. (http://cgi.ebay.com/Sega-Dreamcast-Katana-Development-Kit-HKT-01-RARE_W0QQitemZ170108140306QQihZ007QQcategoryZ62054QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) I scratched up more money, and talked my brother into the possibility of a loan; but it didn't matter. I cheaped out last minute. There's two or three every year, and I'll definately land the next one. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: DefaultGen on May 13, 2007, 10:51:03 PM That auction looks like the seller ended it early because of an error in the listing, not that it didn't sell. I missed out on a lot of 9 game gear games today, 6-7 of which were multicarts because I was too lazy to snipe and bid early. I hate being outbid for 50c at the last minute :P Didn't even get any serious bids except mine for $16 and the winning bid of $16.50.
Edit: Heh, I just realized most people probably consider pirated carts here mostly worthless unless they're some kind of rare pirate cart. I collect pirated stuff :) Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Fuyukaze on May 18, 2007, 04:08:31 PM I dont snipe. I may wait untill the last 30 minutes before bidding on something, but I dont snipe. It doesnt feel all that great when it happens to me, so why should I do it to others?
Yeah, lots of great things pass me by on Ebay all the time. World still keeps turnin though and one way or another, I will get what I want. Title: Re: The ones that got away. Post by: Lenneth on May 29, 2007, 05:22:34 AM I missed out on LEBC by turning down an offer from a trustworthy trader who I had traded with many times before. It happened shortly after I got ripped off on ebay trying to get the same game so I was a bit reluctant to fork out so much 'in total' for it. Looking back now even the combined cost would have made it worth it. and he was selling it postage inclusive which for an NTSC exclusive (I live in pal-land) that offer was even better. and the version he was selling was the one I wanted too - the complete edition, not the cheap fan made rubbish which came out soon after.
