Title: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Hydrobond on March 31, 2007, 11:21:00 PM Barcelona Computing Center: http://www.bsc.es/plantillaA.php?cat_id=124 http://www.bsc.es/plantillaA.php?cat_id=125 Topography: http://www.bsc.es/plantillaA.php?cat_id=200 Quote Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) or Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (CNS) is a public research center located in Barcelona, Spain. It hosts MareNostrum, Europe's most powerful (and the world's fifth most powerful) supercomputer as of November 2006. The Center is placed in a former chapel named Torre Girona, at the Technical University of Catalonia (also known as UPC) and was constituted on April 1, 2005. It is managed by a consortium composed of the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (51%), the Government of Catalonia (37%) and the UPC (12%). Professor Mateo Valero is its main administrator. The MareNostrum supercomputer is contained inside an enormous glass box. The Barcelona Supercomputing Center has an initial operational budget of €5.5 million/yr (about US$7 million/yr) to cover the period 2005-2011. (It should be noted that it is the 5th most powerful machine in the world. The top 4 reside in United States. http://www.top500.org/list/2006/11/100) (It should also be noted that the BSC played a major role in devolping the Cell processor used in the PS3.) Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: OatBob on April 01, 2007, 01:12:55 PM Wicked awesome!!
For now, I'll consider myself lucky if I can ever afford one of those IBM iSeries (AS/400) computers to run an apache web server for me. Then again, those things are the size of an clothes dryer (and use the same electrical socket too!!) Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on April 01, 2007, 03:26:16 PM It is awesome. I'll take four, for free plz.
Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: OatBob on April 01, 2007, 03:37:00 PM I have no such website. Otherwise, I have no need for such raw computing power. I'm guess I'm just a nerd and like large machines that consume large quantities of electricity. Quite honestly there's no need (or market) for mainframes outside of large businesses with constant computing needs like banks and insurance companies.
Next time I'll just say "ooh, shiny". Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Hydrobond on April 01, 2007, 05:19:49 PM I have no such website. I helped assemble a super computer for a large company last summer. It will spend the rest of its days contemplating the air resistance of fan blades inside of turbine engines. The final machine had something like 1500 blades in it, dual xeon machines made by Dell (yuck). It was very shiny. Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Tondog on April 01, 2007, 06:11:14 PM The coolest supercomputer I've seen is PS3.
Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: OatBob on April 01, 2007, 06:12:01 PM The coolest supercomputer I've seen is PS3. Maybe if you cluster five or so. That would be very shiny indeed. Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Three on April 01, 2007, 07:14:25 PM Since I have nothing to add, here is a computer joke. :)

Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Hydrobond on April 01, 2007, 09:07:02 PM The coolest supercomputer I've seen is PS3. The cell processor is only fast with 32-bit floating point arithmatic. Throw anything else at it and its just a normal processor. And the cell processors in the PS3 are gimped, not 100% functional. The PS3 is far from a supercomputer. Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Tynstar on April 01, 2007, 10:53:00 PM The coolest supercomputer I've seen is PS3. You make me laugh fanboy. Holy hell that is a lot of cables. Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: captain_nintendo on April 02, 2007, 08:52:23 AM cool!

DAMN THE BCS!!!!! I like how #1 on that list has 131072 processors and #2 only has 26544. Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: ganonbanned on April 02, 2007, 06:12:06 PM I need one for PS3 emulators.
Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Tynstar on April 02, 2007, 06:24:29 PM I need one for PS3 emulators. Might be cheaper to get a PS3.....maybe... The #2 machine has a 101,400 gflops / 26,544 processors = 3.82007233 gflops/proc. This means the processors in the #2 machine are ~twice as fast as the processors in the #1 machine. (In short, AMD > IBM.) Title: Re: Coolest Super Computer You Will Ever See Post by: Tynstar on April 02, 2007, 08:32:22 PM (It should be noted that it is the 5th most powerful machine in the world.
