Title: 300
Post by: Mike Leon on March 05, 2007, 11:09:01 PM
I saw an advance screening tonight. It blew my mind. It was almost 90 minutes of raw violence and badassitude. The only thing missing is tentacle rape. I still give it a 10/10.

P.S. It has boobs.

As a movie watcher it was fantastic. As a history buff it was inane and many stupid little things drove me crazy that I had told myself wouldn't bother me.

The Spartans showed too much emotion, strange as that sounds, and the weird Orcish looking Persians were kinda fucked up, and Leonidas looking to his wife for guidance was laughable (girl power!!) and the whole subplot which doesn't change the outcome of anything and makes a mockery of the Spartan city state could have been left out to show more fighting. Believe it or not this movie makes Spartans look less badass then they actually were...

It was still fantastic but I'd have to give it a 9/10.

I thought the Orcs were a surprising touch. I agree about Leonidas looking to his wife for guidance. Hogwash. But the sub plot is sort of a necessity. From a screen writing perspective, you just have to have something to break up the main story line. Otherwise the movie feels weird like you keep fast forwarding.

I always loved the old sword'n'sandal.  But this is gonna be way more.  Judging by the previews I've seen, it looks cool.

I've barely even heard of the film 300, so my opinion doesn't count. But the reviewers on the radio were going on about it being extremely homoerotic, with oiled up men et al. I had to laugh when my friend called half an hour later and said 300 looks awesome and we should go see it together.

Hippies always bring up the homosexual issue with the Spartans. Last year it was thought Sparta was home to male-on-male love, but this was not 20th century homosexuality, this was supposedly something the Spartans did to earn one another's loyalty and companionship which led to stronger cohesion on the battlefield. However, recent findings now suggest that any form of homosexuality in Sparta was punishable by death. Next year, something else will probably come up about the issue, it changes with fair impunity.

We do know that in Athens, a city state separate from Sparta, that young boys were looked upon by older males with the same attraction as women were. But the older male was to act as the mentor to the prepubescent, the young boy was meant to resist, sex, if it happened, was between the thighs and not the butt.

Why do I know all this? Sitting through a Classics course.

In any case the reviewers probably hate that this movie glorifies war and so are looking for something to make it less appealing to the people who go see it.

I thought it was a good movie, lots of violence and everything else that Americans seem to love so much.

So yeah.  I loved it. lol

On the issue of homosexuality, at least in this film, I just wanna say... some of those Spartains were hawt. ;-)
