Title: The White Death Approacheth
Post by: TraderJake on February 06, 2007, 12:45:33 PM
Cincinnati overreacts to snow. For a city that is north of the Mason-Dixon line (just barely), we certainly act as though we are located in the Deep South in regards to dealing with snow. Perhaps it is because the metropolis straddles the Mason-Dixon line, but if there is even a threat of snow, people freak out. There was one instance in 2004 that was especially terrible, where it took 2 and a half hours to make it the 12 miles to my house, thanks to a nice little snow storm that happened to hit at rush hour. It would have been worse had I had to travel south on the major thoroughfare through the city (I-75), driving on that road would have taken 5-6 hours to commute anywhere of importance. Today they are predicting a clipper snow of DEATH to hit the city fairly soon, and the city certainly has their panties in a wad. Certainly I am anticipating when I leave school in 2  and a half hours that it will be the commute home from hell. I can't wait.

So, what are your white death horror stories? Ever get stuck in the commute from hell? Perhaps you were snowed in? How does your city react to snow? (Clearly, some cities don't get snow, we're aware of that, no need to tell us) One thing is for certain though, the commute for the Black Perl and I will certainly suck this afternoon. THE WHITE DEATH APPROACHETH!

It's weird around here, some people will drive 30 mph under the speed limit if there is a little bit of snow and others just seem to not notice if there is 2 feet of snow on the road.  Basically, they are just idiots.
I did stuck i my driveway twice this year.  My damn 1 wheel drive S-10 with tires that have barely any tread.  New tires as too damn expensive.

At the end of fall quarter after an ungodly early finals exam we got like that half inch to an inch of snow and the world went insane. The highways were a mess and I literally SAW three accidents happen as I took the backroads home.

But I always suggest the backroads unless there's so much snow that aforementioned roads are completely covered.

I'm just glad I don't have to go out today, although I should get some gas...if I had woken up before two maybe I could have done so.

I saw some snow once. It melted by mid day.

You wanna see people overreact to snow you should see people in the Portland/Vancouver area.  They see one snow flake and everything comes to a screeching halt.

Last January (2006) I took my wife to Chicago for the day for her birthday.  We went to the heart of downtown, which is normally about a 75 - 90 minute drive from our house.  Everything on the way in was just fine.

Unfortunately, it started snowing like a bitch on the way home.  It took us over 4 hours to get home on I-90.   We couldn't see very far in front of the car.

All in all, I hate snow.

It's supposed to snow in England on Thursday, I can hardly wait for the three snow flakes.

You guys should be greatful for the snow. It's always f'ing freezing over here but never snows properly and when it does it usually goes by the time you've finished work.

I used to live in Illinois where they were somewhat reasonable about snow.  Especially in the country, where they would close school more often because of drifing snow.  Alas, I'm somehow stuck here in Minnesota where they might consider a 2-hour delay in the event of two feet of snow.  What really sucks is that the jet stream started moved south as I moved north so the past five years, they've been getting more snow (and some nasty ice storms) than we have up here.

QFT

What's worse is when we're travelling between states. Never fails: we get to one state, only to immediately get a call from the other saying "It's snowing here! Actual, real SNOW!!" Argh.

It's -0.8C here. Maybe we will get some snow down south. We got some a couple of weeks ago.

I'd gladly trade our snow for just being cold.  In the past two weeks here, the temp has been hovering around -5 F, with wind chills around -25 F. That, and we got 6 inches of snow yesterday.

Snow is no fun to shovel, no fun to drive in, and no fun to be outside in. It looks nice for the first day or two, and then turns into a gray mess.

I disagree with the "no fun to drive in" part.  You just need a pick-up truck and an empty parking lot.  Now that is damn fun.

True, too true.

I guess I should rephrase:

Not too bad to drive in if you pay attention, but it sucks when idiots on the road are acting like it is a sunny day in the middle of July and still turn corners at 40 MPH.

We've got about four inches of snow here and it's still falling. :o The most I've seen in this town was about two inches.

We're having trouble getting the cars up the drive, even after shovelling the snow. Maybe I could use it as an excuse to not go to work.

It's snowing here but it might as well be not bothering. It's not sticking and the snowflakes are tiny.

It never snows properly here. Ever.

When I said "we" were having trouble with the cars, I meant my dad. When I tried I did it fine with no wheel spinning. I drove to the bus stop with only one problem. I was doing 15-20mph until I got to the busy roads. There's a hill with a mini-roundabout at the bottom. So, still doing about 20mph, I started braking at the top of the hill. But I just kept going straight onto the roundabout. Luckily there were no other cars near it.

Why do kids find it soo amusing to throw snowballs at vehicles? They were doing it all the way along the bus route, there and back. Then as I was driving home from the bus stop I was hit by one.

Yeah, two days ago it took me 3.5 hours to get home. It sucked big time.

A looooong time ago, I was out working near Piqua, OH...somewhere out in the middle of nowhere, just cows....I experienced my first white-out while driving.

Minutes later, I plowed into a snow drift that nearly swallowed my car...I figured I was screwed until a farmer on a tractor pulled me out and bulldozed a path for me back to the main highway...never been so thankful in my life!

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK!

http://news.uns.purdue.edu/x/2007a/070213SnowRecess.html

Classes are cancelled from noon today until noon tomorrow.  This means that office hours are off, so I can't see the TA/Prof about a VHDL issue, but I still have my lab tomorrow.  They better extend it.

It's not even that bad out right now.  I guess they expect it to get much worse.

Damn, I never thought I would be mad about cancelled classes.

We are suppoosed to be getting a uber huge pile of snow tonight/tomorrow.

I have to be at work for 8am to do inventory :-/ then classes are 6-9pm :-/

Hopefully the first guess of an inch or 2 is right and not the second one of a couple feet.
I hate snow.

Me and my neighborhood buds were out wandering around in the storm. Transformers were blowing out all over the place. Really eerie looking, like three second extremely bright blue glows.

The power's out at the top end of my neighborhood, I'll be amazed if ours stays on through then night. Can't believe UC hasn't called off yet, no way I'll make it tomorrow.

Yeah, the wind load is going to fail a lot of power lines.

God, I sound like such an engineer with that statement.

Our internet was out for 8 hours today, and the power has been out for a cumulative 2 hours. I have this feeling that the shit is going to hit the fan once the wind picks up. I wonder if there are any photos of the high tension wire on 75... thank god for circuit breakers and MISO.

Everything is closed everywhere....

Springfield schools were the last to close(no suprise) and STCC didn't call in their closing until about 15-20 mins after the public schools.

I am kinda surprised that SPFLD schools got closed before 6am.
Usually it takes them way longer. Maybe it's because busses run earlier now....

I actually decided to drive down and made it in record time. Everyone being forced to drive the same speed proved awesome.

Of course I should have stayed home, only five people showed up in my English class. If another class finishes early I'm outta here. No reason to waste all my time sitting on a WoWless computer :P

I couldn't believe it this morning, my school actually closed.  For the first time in 20 some years. I am so excited because I had a Spanish test today that I was going to fail, now I get to fail it on Friday.

The only problem is, we got too much snow.  My buddies and I were planning on dragging each other around on sleds with our trucks, but the snow is too damn deep.

I disagree, I'd rather have a foot and a half of snow to an inch of solid ice.
