Title: N64 console observation/question
Post by: NES_Rules on November 29, 2006, 09:40:30 PM
I bought a 3rd N64 and while trying to get it to work, I looked in the cartridge slot and noticed the plastic inside is a translucent green.  I though it was odd, so I checked my other 2 N64s and they are both grey inside.
So, is this just some reject left from the green N64's or what?

*Weird*  Sounds like a case for scully and mulder from the x-files.  Left-over parts from ufo's had been used to make n64's.

Is the case it's in black?  I'm wondering if the old owner cracked the system shell and just swapped it out with a black one.

Yes, all 3 that I checked are the standard black color on the outside.

Ok. I took some pictures of the "green" N64 and a regular N64.
First up is the regular N64;

Now, for the "green" one

That's my guess.
Although, it doesn't look like the green one has the regional lockout tabs. Maybe the original owner swapped out the grey one with lockout tabs intact with some green thing without lockout tabs.

as far as i can tell the green thing is the main PCB of the N64 and that gray looking thing is its protector or something.
the region lockouts normally a code based thing (yes i know the Megadrive isn't) aren't all the N64 cartridges the same shape?
Maybe in the past someone has taken it apart and not put it back right though the unit still works, Some machines are full of useless metal shielding maybe it was part of that.

No, I own both American and Japanese N64 games and I can tell you that they have slightly differing shapes. Differing enough to only be able to slide into their region's N64.
However, if you can bypass that (by taking out the region blocker) then it'll work just fine.

^^^Yup :)^^^

I took a hammer and sharp objects to one of my N64s so i could play my japanese games.

But that green thing is another plastic shield of some sort.
Mine doesn't have any florescent green under neath the gray shield.

From what i can se anyways it is just screws and metal.

I looked at more closely today and the green one is the same exact shape as the grey one, meaning that it has those little blocks that prevent it from playing imports.  The console doesn't appear to have never been taken apart or anything, the screws show no sign of wear or anything. It was definitely built at the factory like this.

Maybe just built with left over parts from the Jungle Green system then?

I get them with the green inside often at my store just seems to me like extra parts.
