Title: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Arrrhalomynn on August 13, 2004, 06:02:49 PM The Olympics opened today, and nobody seems to care. I know I hardly do. My mom was watching it and I saw a bit of the opening when getting something to drink. It didn't seem very interesting.
Same goes for the sports. I might watch some events I'm interested in. Cycling for example. I might also watch some events Dutch people might get a gold medal in. Swimming comes to mind. Apart from that, I can't really be bothered about the whole event. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Izret101 on August 13, 2004, 07:06:38 PM Americans win swimming. Americans sweep the olympics. Thats it dont worry about it.
No but seriously. I will probably watch the more interesting events or whatever the hell is on. I want to see how the Iraqis do though because they have a new opportunity opened to them and they are MAJOR underdogs. Otherwise Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: jonlester on August 13, 2004, 07:23:24 PM My only reason for watching any of it is the simple fact that it's on TV. I think it's nice that Iraq and Afghanistan are sending female athletes for the first time ever and I'd like to have more good news like that.
Otherwise I think the Olympics are completely corrupt. How did it become acceptable to allow NBA stars to compete? You might remember from history that Jim Thorpe had to give back his medals because it came out that he had been on a semi-pro softball team or something like that. Now we have the Dream Team, apparently because it's all about getting gold medals for Americans at any cost. Oh, it's also good news that Juan Antonio Samarach is gone. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Izret101 on August 13, 2004, 09:00:26 PM Ya but we were singled out to make sure we arnt using drugs too.
I love that in a massive world wide event they are basically saying "We dont trust you America. If i find you using drugs im gonna kick your ass and you wont be able to play" When 2 of the Greeks are already being banned. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: jonlester on August 13, 2004, 09:08:28 PM And one of them had a wreck too, right?
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Mike Leon on August 13, 2004, 09:11:28 PM The Olympics opened today? Huh.
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: KarmaCreep on August 13, 2004, 09:32:28 PM Olywhat?

Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Hydrobond on August 14, 2004, 06:05:24 AM Yeah, I watched the first 20 minutes of the opening ceremony last night, it was the most boring piece of shit i have ever seen. Other than that, I'm surprised that there wasn't any terrorist type thing given that it was FRIDAY THE 13th.
Anyways, I always like to watch what I can of the actual games, so I'm sure I will be catching a lot of the first week. After that, off to school again. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: shadytool on August 14, 2004, 08:16:55 AM i watched the end of the opening last night. i always wonder what the ppl of the city holding the events do with the new shit they build for the olympics after they are done. thats alot of money and time to build those things just for 3 (?) weeks of games.
onto the NBA players... get them the hell out of there. bring in college kids that dont get payed to play a sport. they do it for the love of the game not money. plus they will most prolly show up for meetings on time (unlike the NBA players) and show some heart out there on the court. its bad when the 'dream team' (*snicker* they are bad and wont win a medal) loses to italy in an expedition game by 17 points. as far as i can tell there is no need to bring NBA Pros to the olympics. makes me sick. @izret: on the drug and doping tests... get a clue. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: jonlester on August 14, 2004, 11:35:02 AM Atlanta got Turner Field and Centennial Olympic Park out of it. Nearby Conyers still has the upgraded horse park that's been put to good use. Other events were held in existing facilities.
Also in Atlanta some things went the way of the 1982 World's Fair. I was there in August 2000, walking down the street to something and saw one of the temporay headquarters still had the banner hanging up after 4 years, with nothing inside and a beat neighborhood all around it. For Athens, I've heard it was the most congested capital in Europe but now people can get around. They have a much improved infrastructure now. Plus they have an elevator installed at the Parthenon now so that will increase tourism by old and handicapped people among other benefits. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Arrrhalomynn on August 14, 2004, 11:40:14 AM Yeah, that 10 billion is well spent....
Anyways, it's not just basketball that's professionals. All sports people are professionals. Bettini wins at cycling, Ian Thorpe at swimming, etc. They're all sports milionaires. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: shadytool on August 14, 2004, 11:46:07 AM thanks jonlester. never knew what happened to those things.
pros in the olympics makes me crazy. and arrr just pointed out more of them that i didnt know about. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Izret101 on August 14, 2004, 06:43:16 PM @ Arr & Shady
i know about the drug tests but in a speech they singled out America. Probably because there was such a huge investigation into it at the last olympics, then with Lance Armstrong and with just about every "prefessional" sports player in the US Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Sauza12 on August 14, 2004, 11:50:39 PM I like the idea of pro's in sports. I see the olympics of the best from each country competing against each other, not just the best who aren't getting paid for it. Besides, it's fun to watch dream teams face off against each other in hockey (I know it's not getting played right now.....sheesh).
The only thing that I don't like is that no country seems to challenge the USA for the overall medal count. That might seem a little braggish, but I like having that little something extra to root for. btw, did anyone see the parade of nations when the guy from the British Virgin Islands came out? They had one athlete and he came out by himself and looked sooooo unhappy. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Hydrobond on August 15, 2004, 07:16:20 AM I finally caught some of the olympics this morning. I couldn't sleep and they were showing re-runs at 4:00AM on NBC.
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Arrrhalomynn on August 23, 2004, 03:28:50 PM Am I the only one who is annoyed by the huge array of different swimming types and distances? There's 50 meters, 100 meters, 200 meters, in all different kinds of shapes, and then there's swimming with 4 people in all different kind of shapes, etc. etc.
Just swim a 100 meter and get it over with! The same few guys will win it anyway, There's van den Hoogeband, Ian Thorpe and that American guy. Bronze, Zilver, Gold. Done! Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Lord Nepenthean on August 23, 2004, 04:09:49 PM I just found out two days ago that the Olympics were even going on, when they were talking about how HORRIBLE the American basketball team is on the TV in a restaraunt. I won't watch one minute of the Olympics, and I couldn't care less about who wins what medals. Blech.
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Sauza12 on August 24, 2004, 08:38:13 AM I started watching womens water polo because there is a chick on the Italian team Named Gisy (pronounced "juicy") Mulatto. It made my day. |D
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: shadytool on September 26, 2004, 08:25:54 AM just an after thought here...
i didnt think that i would watch much of the games at all, but i was sucked in big time. it seemed like any free time was given to watching the games on tv. even watched the closing ceremonies... and i find myself kinda sad that i have to wait 4 more years till they start up again. maybe the winter games will be good... thats only 2 years away, right? Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Arrrhalomynn on September 26, 2004, 09:25:19 AM You can watch the special olympsics. Then you'll only have to wait 3 years and 10 months.
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: shadytool on September 26, 2004, 09:31:18 AM thanks arrr
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Hydrobond on September 26, 2004, 01:04:24 PM Yeah, the winter olympics are in 2006 in a city called Torino in Italy. Never heard of the place before, but then again, I am a nieve American.
Looks like it will be a nice setting for the winter games: (http://www.psyco.com/englishpart/torino.jpg) Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Arrrhalomynn on September 26, 2004, 01:31:16 PM Torino? That's Turin. You must indeed quite the naive American if you've never heard of that place before. I've never been there, but it's supposedly beautiful and has more history than the USA and Canada combied (as a figure of speach, not really of course, don't get mad)
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Izret101 on September 26, 2004, 04:56:08 PM My dads girlfriend has been there.
And it is probably older than US and Canada combined so i think youre right about the history thing. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Hydrobond on September 26, 2004, 05:54:06 PM Oh wow.  Turino must be what it is called in Italy.  Althought I feel pretty stupid for not making the connection between Turin and Turino.  And yes, I have heard of Turin. ÂÂÂ
http://www.torino2006.org/index.php?lang=en Oh, and we know we can't comapre to anything in Europe as far as history goes. Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Lord Nepenthean on September 28, 2004, 06:19:00 AM Maybe if the Europeans (our ancestors) hadn't killed 90% of the 60 million people that lived here (and their cultures) at the beginning of the 15th century, we'd have a little more history here.
Title: Re: Do you care about the Olympics? Post by: Zimbacca on September 28, 2004, 07:46:16 AM Getting back to the Olimpics, I'll watch them if nothing better is on.
