Title: Wii vs Revolution
Post by: Cobra on September 22, 2006, 12:16:03 AM
Personally I think the Nintendo Revolution sounded loads better than Wii, but wanted to see what others think.

To call it the Wii, at least outside of Japan, is simply retarded. If I had never heard of the Wii before and I went into a store and someone asked me if i'd like to buy a Wii. I'd probably punch that person in the face.

I think Nintendo will lose sales because of "Wii."

And when I really think about it I stopped liking this system right after the name change. They had something revolutionary it seemed, but now they just have Wii.

Is it Wii as in We! or as in Wy?

Either way, it puts me off. We because, well yeah, and Wii because I keep thinking WWII...
I personally believe your right about it possibly causing loss of sales MSS Leon, because it makes it sound more aimed at a younger audience if it's We!

revolution is a term that appeals to male gamers

wii is a term that can appeal to non gamers (partents, girls, older people, etc)

dont look into a name much, video games sold well under retarded names like "nintendo", "atari" and "playstation"

While the name alone wont chose the fate of a system (within reason that is)

I do believe it dose have an effect, just like any product. If it didn't, companies wouldn't waste so much time and money coming up with the name.

Just a little example, as even overuse of a name or too many sequels has an effect.
When the PS3 preview was launched, you didn't hear comments like "wow gotta get that." Instead what I over heard another couple saying was "what?! There's a 3rd one now?"

in the end, the wii will truly be bought or sold by the games. space invaders, super mario bros, sonic the hedgehog, street fighter ii, final fantasy vii all sold consoles by the millions.  can wii sports and twilight princess do the same?  the answer to that will be the answer to the wii's sales numbers

Probably not. Those aren't as appealing, to me at least, as the others you mentioned (except FF7, but that's another story).

It's true, in the end the biggest factor is the games (plus advertising 'n' market power) that truly sell the system.
That and of course the size of the companies wallets, and how long they want to keep a system alive. But of course that too is affected by demand witch is fuelled by the above.

In short, the gaming market is an amazing, but often cruel place in witch no one can predict.

I voted "Wii". It seems that this name is more appropriate to the capabilities of the system. If they decided to make their games HD, I'd say Revolution would be more appropriate.

Wii implies innovative and fun, which seems to be their plan. Revolution would also imply higher tech, which ths system is not.

Viva la Revolution!!  Revolution was a much better name and it would have fit very well because Nintendo is revolutionizing gaming with this system.  Wii what?

That may be true and what they're thinking but if it is, it's a bunch cornswallop (wow it's in the site's dictionary). Since when were companies truthful in product names?

And it doesn't have to be Sparky McGee in the hardware department to be revolutionary, it has to just be revolutionary, and maybe it will be, we'll have to see. (I'm sorry :-X but I doubt it)

Maybe they were just afraid that the system was soooooo un-revolutionary that they had to change it to something that reminds us of male genetalia.

Of course I thought Revolution was the better name. But, I am not buying the Wii for the name, I am buying it for the unique experiences and games that it will bring to the table.

Although I have no plans on buying one, I do hope at least one of my friends do so I can try it out, as it is the system I am most curious about out of the three.

Even though they went with Wii they keep referring to it like so"Wii Remote revolutionizes the way people play games"

Wii is dumb.
