Title: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: David_J. on August 05, 2006, 08:00:46 PM ...my mom has a problem with me putting it aside. Beleive it or not they are pretty cool about it, and even my mom helps me find games and is always on the look out. I have some bills that need to be taken care of, and I have the money for both, but still I want to take a break from it.
who'da thunk something like this would happen? It's never a source of contention. -- just keep your bills paid, do well at school. Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: captain_nintendo on August 05, 2006, 11:51:13 PM It happens.
I have taken breaks from playing games and even collecting. You know what?? It will still be there when you want to go back to it. Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: David_J. on August 06, 2006, 08:10:30 AM Yeah, I have no problem and I realize that, but my mom doesn't, oh well.
Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: shannonrose86 on August 06, 2006, 10:45:43 PM Its understandable that your mother wants you to continue. Not to sound like Oprah or anything but....
Its human nature for a mother to want to make her child happy. She knows these games make you happy. So she wants to help you with your collecting. Your mother loves you be greatful for that. Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: Tynstar on August 06, 2006, 11:14:29 PM I take breaks all the time.
Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: David_J. on August 06, 2006, 11:20:26 PM Oh I am greatful I spend a lot of time with my parents, and love too. :)
I just find it funny she wants me to keep it going, even tho money will be tight. Car repairs and college books are more important than games, no? Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: atari_wizard on August 06, 2006, 11:54:58 PM I'm taking a break for financial reasons and I've taken breaks from gaming/collecting several times as of yet.
@David_J. Sounds like you have your priorities in order and like Cap'n said, "collecting will be here when you come back to it." Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: wrldstrman on August 07, 2006, 01:38:16 AM I take small breaks especially when things your looking for never show up and I get frustrated
Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: the_wizard_666 on August 07, 2006, 02:16:55 AM Yeah, I've slowed up, and even stopped, picking up new games at times, usually during unemployment spells. I just use the time to play the games I don't have time to play when I work :P

Your mom is a very nice person. You can tell her I said so. Shannon Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: Sauza12 on August 10, 2006, 11:04:19 AM Sometimes "real life" gets in the way and I will stop buying stuff completely. I always get back into it though.
My parents are the same way as yours. I go out to garage sales with my mom because A) it's nice to be able to spend time with her while doing something we both like and B) I need somebody to go with. Both of my parents pick up stuff for me when they see it, and they actually have a pretty good track record of getting me stuff I don't have. My friends, however, are the ones that usually push me into getting back into buying stuff. I have one friend that buys new games all the time and harps at me until I buy it so he can talk about the game with someone. My other friends just like coming over and seeing what odd new shit I've bought since the last time they were over. I have been loudly booed when I've said that I hadn't bought anything for a few weeks. Title: Re: My folks encourage my hobby but there's a problem! Post by: Antimind on August 13, 2006, 10:59:47 AM Like everyone else said, it's aright. I myself was going to stop collecting due to my move and financial situation but my husband and in-laws won't hear of it. I didn't really want to stop either. Instead I've redefined what I collect. Before I went apeshit and bought everything I could. Now I'm buying only games I'll actually play and concentrating on memorabilia that's geared toward my interests (Tales series stuff, Dragon Quest, Nintendo).
I can still boast about having what's possibly the largest collection of Tiger Handhelds from 87-98 and intend on continuing that collection once I get my stuff up here. If you ever would have to sell I'll tell ya right now that it isn't easy. I had over 600 NES games (including variants) when I started parting with them. So close too but it had to be done. now I'm down to just over 100, just what I play. I didn't want to part with a lot of things but selling them to friends made it a lot easier on me. Knowing that these things would go to a good home where they'd be taken care of. |
