Title: Price guide suggestion.
Post by: Kevincal on August 04, 2006, 04:14:01 PM
I think it would be cool to incorporate some kind of price guide into the games in the database.  Like on a games page at the top along with the rest of the information, have a "value" box.  I was thinking to get the value for certain games, it would depend if it was vintage or current software.  Like for instance, I would say all games up until the PS2 could be valued according to an average obtained from eBay completed listings.  To me it's pretty obvious now that eBay is THE source for videogames, period.  I don't know how the rest of you feel but to me it makes sense.

Then for current software, mainly new, prices could be average from other sources online like buy.com and even eBay again, since they have a ton of new stuff too.  I dunno what do you think.   :slick:

I think it sounds cool!  I also think it probably would take alot of work.

Ya it would take awhile.  But you have to start somewhere.  :)  I was amazed at how many Genesis games are only worth $0.01...mostly loose sports games but still.  It's also crazy how some games on Ebay have such varying prices.  Like, if you do a search on completed listings for say...Mario 3.  Loose it seems it ranges from about $0.99 to $10.00 or more!!  A lot of it depends on when the auction ends.  I've noticed with a game like that, popular, if it ends in the day on the weekend it gets significantly more.

Maybe in 10 years when RFG is huge this could be done.

lol, I know.  I am getting ahead of myself.  :P  For now we should all just work on getting as many games in the database as well as information and scans.  :)  Can you imagine if every single game had a complete page?  That would be so awesome.

Indeed it would.

You have to bear in mind that postage is included in the price. No one pays $0.01 for anything on ebay.

While it would be nice, I think it would be too much work for the time being. Games are still being added to the database. I'd like to have a thread like the "Submit missing games here" thread but for prices. Then we could debate the price amongst each other and get an accurate figure to agree on.

I also think European games should be in either Pounds or Euros, and American games should be in Dollars. One thing I don't like about the Digital Press guide is that everything is in Dollars. That means some European games are listed as $5 when they're actually worth around £5. It gets a bit confusing.

I had suggested an idea for a price guide before were people would enter how much they payed for their copy of the game(s) and it would make an average price based off that.

But then someone said(wisely) that people could skew the values of the games to be in their favor.
Much like some people do with our games rating system if they see a game they think its rated to highly rather than give it a fair rating they will give it an extremely low one to try and cripple its score.

I am all for a pricing system but we have a ways to go yet...
