Title: Online Gaming
Post by: Tynstar on August 04, 2006, 02:59:05 PM
I am the only one that is bothered when reviews or people say "The game is only good online". Single player offline sucks.

I see more and more games like this.  :grrr:

You mean you're angry that games don't offer good single player experiences anymore? Yeah, I don't like that either, because I never play online. Then again, I don't play a lot of games either.

Thats probably beause the people that buy online games have little to no interest in the single player. I played the socom series on ps2 for around 4 years, spent around 7-8,000 hours online, and maybe 15 hours all together in their single player games. Not that they werent good online (S3 wasnt bad), but I bought htem to play online not offline.

Not all online games are bad 1 player though, such as burnout revenge and call of duty 2.

The Halo series do have good single player but multiplayer really is where it's at. Personally I like the multiplayer Quake 4 better than the single player. The Quake series always was meant for multiplayer though. Hell, the Quake III single player experience is the exact same thing as the multiplayer but with bots instead of people. Both are great fun though.

It's just a fact Scott. With the growth of online gaming and more people interested in taking on friends, developers will be more interested in a polished multiplayer experience and spend less time worrying about the single player campaigns. I know it sucks, they should spend equal time on both I think. When I think of single player games these days I think of RPGs. Seems that every other genre of single player game just licks testicles.

Um...don't buy them then?!?!

I don't know. I think that there are a lot of games out there that  are fun in single and multiplayer (online or offline). Many racing games especially.

I'll be concerned when they start departing from 4pSS. Imo, nothing beats Deathmatch 4pSS (with or without system link) with a bunch of friends in the same room. :)

I dont buy them (well unless under 10 bucks). It is just the trend that worries me. One day will playing games by yourself not online be a thing of teh past?

it's nice that companies like bethesda or bioware can still give me something that lasts 40+ hours that i can play relaxing by myself without f-bombs and smack talk, and all these $70 games where single-player is merely a 8 hour or less souped up offline demo make me appreciate serious rpg's all the more, even if they are getting fewer and farther between.

There are several games that I play that I hate single player, but love multi.  COD2, BFV, etc, they are all PC games though.  Im not to big of a console online fan.

Well Scott, considering the way things are going and that they're taking the good ol arcade games and giving them online play, I'd say single player is fading. Prolly never go away completely but it's gettin to a point where there may as well be none at all. With few exceptions (like Tan stated) single player gamers are pretty well screwed. The DS has a lotta great single player games however...

I too feel that the single player game is being phased out, and more online play is being encouraged from Microsoft, this will almost definatley increase as the 360 grows in popularity. Later in the year Sony will then follow suit with the PS3 as they have totally ran out of ideas and will jump on the latest fad band wagon, that currently being online gaming.

This once again leads us to what could be our only saviour, the Nintendo Wii. Whilst I know the Wii will cater for online gaming, I am hoping that whilst it will be providing new and innovative new gaming experiences it will still be catering for the single player mode and not follow suit with the rest of the big boys.

I've suprised myself by actually playing online a lot lately. I mostly play Call of Duty 2 online with my friends from another board,. I bought an x-b0x 360 last week.

Just bought Midway Arcade 1&2 too.

My x-box live gamertag should anyone wish to add me is; THXII38
thx1138 was taken, note the capital I in place of the number 1.

I was puzzled as to why backgammon from x-box arcade sucked so much.
Backgammon is available (albeit online only) in my version of Windos (why they couldn't make it playable offline I've never figured. Anyway, it's a decent enough game, but the one I downloaded from x-box live kinda sucks, there is no option to retire, so one is forced to see out lost cause games, which can be a bit frustrating.

I bought Battelfield 2, as everyone recommneded it, but I hated it. I traded it in for Blazing Angels, which everyone said sucked, and I really like it.

If you see this THX1138, welcome back, we hope that you enjoy the changes that have occurred in the recent months.

It's always nice to see old members posting again, especially those members that joined before me.

On the topic of Online Gaming, a certain game has stolen the lives of a few of my friends, and I tried to get hooked to Mario Kart DS, but to no avail. If SSB:B is online trust me, I'll be addicted to that.

Thanks TraderJake. :)

Well, i've just bought from a friend Midway Arcade 1 & 2 for the x-box to play on my 360, so I don't think I'll ever be able to kick the retro habit entirely.
