I am thinking about buy a 2600 homebrew game from Packrat Video Games.  I will be buying it purely as a collector item. I was wondering what you guys think of homebrews.  Are they a waste of money, a cool addition to a collection, or an awesome way to get a rare item for your collection?  Also, what kind of homebrews do yall have?

Homebrews are great. Especially for a system that no longer comes out with games. www.atariage.com has some great homebrew games available in their store. The homebrews I have are Jammed, AA Holiday Cart '05, Climber 5 & the Paul Slocum test cart. I think they aren't going to be a big collector's item, unless they have a limited pressing. The Holiday carts are only available for a limited amount of time and last years was serial numbered.

I like homebrews, though I don't have too many.  I picked up Feet of Fury for the DC a few years back at CGE, and... that just might be it.  Except for the few on the Activision Anthology collection.

They're fun, definately amusing and amazing what some people can pull out of older technology.  Just look at Skeleton+ for the 2600, who'd have thought a first-person shooter could be played on the VCS?

I'd like to get a few more. I have Oystron for the 2600. They are pretty cool but I'm a cheap ass and homebrews can be pretty pricey.

That is the same reason I don't have more.  The only two homebrews I have are both for the Sega CD (Battle Frenzy and Burning Fists), but I have wanted to pick up quite a few Atari homebrews for a while now.

I would love to get my hands on the Thrust+ Platinum bundle.

I have 4 or 5 for the 2600 but I got them as part of a lot I bought. I have Beggar Prince for teh Genesis and need to get the Frog something or other homebrew for the Genesis.

I was thinking about getting the O2 homebrews since I have all the US games for that.

Homebrews are retarded if you buy them for your collection and I've never played a good one.

retarded? that's a bit harsh. I think it's cool that people are making games for defunct systems. I don't consider them part of a systems official library but they are a nice addition to the collection.

Thanks Sauza, I forgot about the Sega CD brews!  Some of those are a lot of fun, Marko in particular.

I don't think people should buy them just for the sake of buying them though, they're meant to be thoroughly enjoyed, made for the love of the system and the game.  I don't count them as part of a system's "official" library since they're usually made far beyond the system's life in retail, but they're still worth taking a look at.  Even if just for the nostalgic value.

the only one i have is lord of the rings for the 2600 which is fun but annoying and hard to figure out at times cuz its a text adventure
