Title: Rating games in your collection Post by: captain_nintendo on April 19, 2006, 08:34:22 AM In light of a line of remarks in the random thoughts thread, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about everybody rating theier games or games they have played.
If you are rating games, then a big thank you! and keep it up. If not, then take advantage of this cool feature. :) It is very important that you really think about the score you give a game. Basically you dont want to give a bad score to a good game just because you want your favorite game to rank above it. Anybody else want to chime in on this? Maybe we can use this thread to discuss what current rankings are and why? I would also like to see a system for ranking games discussed :) Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on April 19, 2006, 08:50:05 AM Yeah people need to just wait until lots of votes are in. Right now with three votes the minimum to show up you're going to get good games that have been rated by 20 people lower than weird games that have been rated by three who really like it.
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: yap on April 19, 2006, 08:50:45 AM Super Mario World is the best SMB game and maybe Mario 64 second, but who in the world thinks SMB 3 was the best?
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: CatchFiveBats on April 19, 2006, 08:58:54 AM Quote Super Mario World is the best SMB game and maybe Mario 64 second, but who in the world thinks SMB 3 was the best? Almost everyone (although I agree with you on SMW). It's the best-selling Mario game (and I think best-selling game, period) ever, so I would hope it's well-liked. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: yap on April 19, 2006, 09:08:44 AM Tetris sold 33 million copies, SMB 3 sold 18 million.
But that doesn't mean SMB 3 > SMW. That was a completely different time, when everyone had a NES. I don't know if I'd agree with your 'almost everyone' comment. I've looked at a few top 100 of all time lists. IGN for example has SMB 3 at 20 something and SMW at 5. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on April 19, 2006, 09:28:15 AM I like SMB3 better because of nostalgia reasons.
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: yap on April 19, 2006, 09:31:08 AM I think the real travesty here is that the best game ever (Phantasy Star) only has a rating of 75% and doesn't even come close to making the top 100.
Booo hisss. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: CatchFiveBats on April 19, 2006, 09:45:48 AM Quote Tetris sold 33 million copies, SMB 3 sold 18 million. Dammit! ;) You got me there. Either way, I know of lot of people who really like SMB3. Also, I just went through my collection and rated every game I knew enough about to do so. Gotta do my part! Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: captain_nintendo on April 19, 2006, 10:06:04 AM Quote I think the real travesty here is that the best game ever (Phantasy Star) only has a rating of 75% and doesn't even come close to making the top 100. Booo hisss. I dont think I have rated it :-/ Then again, I havent really played it yet. :-[ I guess I will have to break it out and play it over the summer somethime and give it a rating. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: shaggy on April 19, 2006, 10:06:17 AM I'll do the same with my collection.
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Cham Zord on April 19, 2006, 12:29:43 PM Personally, I find SMB3 to be better than SMW. Although nostalgia has something to do with it, the idea of transforming into various creatures was pretty awesome, too.
When I rate games, I find that I give either too good of a score or too bad of a score. I'm working on finding an equilibrium, but I still want to be very cautious on games getting a "perfect" score. I sometimes find myself in the same boat of being too generous or to strict when rating games. I have improved alot since coming to rfgeneration. Actually rating a multitude of games, you get an idea of what does and does not "make the grade". Getting the members here to start rating games is a start. Getting everybody to use the same guide lines (or approximates) will be even better |D Perhaps we should go over what categories you should be looking at while rating or even reviewing a game? Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Izret101 on April 19, 2006, 01:06:01 PM Why should there be some arbitrary guide line set up?
Vote it however you like. If you really enjoyed the game vote it high. If you really didn't like the game vote it lower. Just don't ber a jerkoff and boost a game or drop a games rating high or low to try and off set the average. It is an average for a reason. If you think you can be fair and balanced(think Fox News HAHA) write up a review so people can make a desicion based on some facts rather than just numerical opinions. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on April 19, 2006, 02:05:30 PM I've meant to write reviews but I never got around to it.
I find with most games, even if I hate it, the lowest I usually something give is like 60% Must be from judging little kids Tae Kwon Do tournaments where the average is 7. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Izret101 on April 19, 2006, 02:13:48 PM The average is generally a 7 for some reason.
Even in school average is 70% or a C. I have a NES game at 5%. I rated it so high because your ship flies and shoots. Other than that i have never been able to get anything else to EVER happen. I just checked and the game is Star Voyager. I don't know who rated it so high to balance it out to a 40something% Maybe they know something i don't and got to see an enemy or something? Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Rejinx on April 19, 2006, 10:42:24 PM I like the system, it just will take alot more votes to even out the scores. What supises me is two of my fav games are rank in the bottom 25. Bayou Billy and Silent service, to me were both good (not great) games.

Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: phoenix1967 on April 20, 2006, 06:47:38 AM Another question to ask regarding criteria is how much play time should we have put into the game before we give it a score? Do we have to play through all the modes as well?
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: captain_nintendo on April 20, 2006, 07:14:55 AM Quote Another question to ask regarding criteria is how much play time should we have put into the game before we give it a score? Do we have to play through all the modes as well? That's really up to you. I look at Izrets response and agree with him. If you like a game, then rate it how you feel. If you dont like a game then rate it appropriately. I just want people to be fair about this. For instance, if Sonic is rated high and you are a Sony or Nintendo fanboy, dont give it a crap rating based on fanboyism. I know this has happened with a few games on the list, and I wont say which... So ultimately, rating is up to you and if you feel you can rate a game. I probably wont rate a game that I have only played 5 or 10 minutes, but I will rate a game if I have played it enough, even without trying everything in the game. As long as you get a good idea about what you are playing ;) Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: yap on April 20, 2006, 07:30:36 AM Rating games like this is tough.
For instance, I just got Burnout Revenge last night. I really liked it, I'll probably end up giving it a good score. But then I was reading a thread on the Xbox Live forums and the general consensus is that this is definately the worst of the Burnout series. I haven't played any of the other Burnouts though, so I'd probably rate this higher than someone who's played all of them! But over time with lots and lots of reviews it all evens out. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: captain_nintendo on April 20, 2006, 07:48:11 AM The good thing is, you can go back and change your personal score you gave a game. Sometimes "the honeymoon" period of a game makes you give it a higher score than it may deserve. Then maybe a year later you go back and play it and notice it wasnt the 85 you originally gave it.

IMO Burnout Revenge is wortha 90. I gave Burnout 3 a 90 too.(Just checked i actualy gave this a 100) I like the new features in revenge like traffic not killing you when you touch it. But i liked the old features of Burnout 3 in the crash mode. With the heart breakers and multipliers better than the crash mode in this version. Make your own opinions. Don't base your desicions off what others have said. It is all a matter of preferance. Here is my work on Burnout 3 for PS2 http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-072-S-06890-A& Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Shimra on April 20, 2006, 06:15:45 PM SMB 3 is hands down the greatest Mario game, and not for nostalgia reasons. The levels, power-ups, everything about the game was superb.
And SMB 3 IS in fact the highest selling game of all time according to the Guiness Book of World Records(2001, but I doubt this has changed). You may be referring to all the variations of Tetris such as the Gameboy version as well as NES. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: phoenix1967 on April 21, 2006, 07:52:51 AM Just added a bunch of ratings and comments to my collection. I only rated and commented on those games I have a solid familiarity with.
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Tynstar on April 21, 2006, 08:03:01 AM Didnt the Sims sell more copies? Or Myst?
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: yap on April 21, 2006, 09:15:32 AM Sims is the best selling PC game, which sold 8 million units or 24 million when combined with all expansions.
SMB3 sold 18 million copies. Super Mario Bros (1) on the nintendo holds the guinness world record for highest selling video game - 40 million units. Units sold don't mean anything though, as the pop music charts can easily illustrate. Personally, I still believe SMB 3 is the worst when considered against SMB, SMW, and M64. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: yap on April 21, 2006, 09:16:56 AM Oh, here's a link to the guinness book of world records Shimra.

And two side notes. The new side scrolling SMB looks like it plays more like SMB3 than SWM by the video that leacked. Also, Phantasy Star is awesome and underappreciated. The only thing that would have made the game better would have been maps for the dungeons. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Izret101 on April 21, 2006, 12:19:39 PM You forget that SMB was sold with the system as a pack in for quite some time.
Although there may have been a SMB3 packin i am forgetting aswell.... I can't believe we have so many top games that are sub 90% It is good to see some of the changes in that list though. Especially new titles and not just the old ones moving in place. Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: yap on April 21, 2006, 12:25:02 PM I didn't forget that, talk to Guinness, they are the ones writing the records.
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Izret101 on April 21, 2006, 12:38:26 PM That was directed at Shirma
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: InvadErGII on April 23, 2006, 09:24:27 PM This might belong in the feedback forum, but is there a way to view my game ratings in my collection list, or sort my games by personal/community ranking? This would definitely be an even bigger incentive to get more ratings in.
Title: Re: Rating games in your collection Post by: Izret101 on April 24, 2006, 07:55:39 AM SWitch your collection to Detailed View.
The "Normal View" doesn't show the ratings or your notes.
