SM had too much hand holding, with the auto map maker and the limited range of samus. in the original, you could go pretty much anywhere in the game in the beginning (and be quickly killed, or course). it was far more open ended.

If I had to choose an older console, it would be Genesis because it was the last console I owned (1995) before buying an xbox and Sega was never afraid of 'political correctness' when it came to their games (i.e. Blood BELONGS in Mortal Kombat).
