Title: Genesis Question
Post by: Mezmoron on March 05, 2006, 05:04:45 PM
Is the a difference in Genesis Systems other than outward appearance?

For instance, I bought Dragon's Fury for my fiancee, but it won't go past the licensing screen.  Do certain systems not play all games?  The game looks to be in fantastic condition when I take it apart.

Thanks for any help!

Ken

Is it an American system and an American game?

I have never heard of the systems havin incompatibility issues.

Trying the game on a different system if you can might be worth a shot but you might just have a bad cart.

Though i have never heard of a cart freezing like that before either.
Well not consistantly anyways...

The Genesis model three wont play some of the first games released for the Genesis. I know for a fact model 3 wont play Zany Golf and Budokan. Those are both EA games.

sorry to hear that. It stinks when you look forward to playing a game and it doesn't work. This same thing happened to me with Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 with the Game Cube Double Dash Bundle. It won't even read the disc. I went out and bought a new copy of the game and same thing.

It could be the controller you are using. Is it a 6 button by any chance? some of the games that don't support the 6 button controller won't get past the opening screen. I know for a fact this is the case with Forgotton Worlds.

I had a 6 button controller plugged in and it just kept looping back to the title screen. I plugged in a 3 button and it worked just fine.

Wow! Thank you. I never knew that. I will store that tip away, as I'm sure I will run into that problem in the future.

The game is Dragon's Fury.  I was using a 3 button controller.

We found that if we press the game back, it'll play.  But when you let the game go, it freezes.  It must be a flaw in the actual cartridge.  I'm not really sure what's wrong.  In any regard, I sent the game back for a refund.

Alot of games made by Accolade (Double Dragon, Ivan Stewart's Super Off Road), will not play on the model II, Model 3, or original Genesis's produced after 91'.
A few EA games have the same issues.

This was due to Accolade and EA both not wanting to sign Sega's third party contracts, and both companys decided to make their own unlicensed cartridges (hence the odd shape and packaging of the carts), so Sega struck back by putting lock-out chips in new models of the Genesis. Both companys eventually bowed down to Sega in the end.

Dragon's Fury was made by Tengen, so it probably had a similar sort of lock out, as Tengen tried to make unlicensed carts on the NES as well.

Best bet is to get an Original Genesis made before 91'. These will have "High Definition Graphics" printed in white behind the cartridge slot, and also have an extra port in the back. This version should play all US games with no problem.

yes it is. http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=U-040-S-01650-A&

of all the games I've tested, I've yet to come across a dead cart. I better knock on wood.
