Title: how many games are there Post by: wrldstrman on March 04, 2006, 06:53:54 PM do you think the million mark has been passed for video games made...talking about for all systems
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: atari_wizard on March 04, 2006, 07:00:18 PM No, not even close. I could be wrong though, but highly doubt it. It would be interesting to see a report list of how many games we're sitting at. If I were working for a video game company, I would keep track of how many of each particular game sold. It comes in handy for collectors. =)
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: nupoile on March 04, 2006, 07:27:11 PM Would you count homebrews? And would you count MODs? I am just curious were YOU would draw the line. What about shareware that didnt do so well, like if someone made a game and it sold less then say 50 units. And how would you count variations of the same game? Is Tetris 1 game or is it like 500 games?
It would be pretty intresting to know all this... Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Izret101 on March 04, 2006, 11:18:11 PM I think if you count every game for every system including variations you could be at a million.
Count all the random shareware, flash games, hacks homebrews, etc and definately over a million. Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: wrldstrman on March 04, 2006, 11:42:18 PM so whos going to try to get a complete collection for every system |D |D |D |D
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: den68 on March 05, 2006, 05:37:42 AM me! though I've yet to complete one library.
as for the million. hell there's probably a million games for the Commodore 64 alone. heh. Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Izret101 on March 05, 2006, 08:13:16 AM I believe Amiga has in the 13,000 area.
Commodore i think was 2x that? EDIT I could be wrong and C64 was at that number and i just thought of Amiga for no reason though... But i am pretty sure Amiga had atound 13k Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: captain_nintendo on March 05, 2006, 08:20:57 AM I dont know guys..... A million? Thats alot :o
Maybe close though. Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Tynstar on March 05, 2006, 08:59:27 AM Hmmmm a million I don't know. I for one am NOT trying to collect all of them. I only want US released games.
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: NESJunkie on March 05, 2006, 11:58:54 AM Here is how we should do it, if we really want to find out. Find lists and start adding them up. Or even general ball park figures. Examples
NES 800 PS1 1400+ last year when I worked at EB, probably 1500 by now. Anyone up for this project? Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: wrldstrman on March 05, 2006, 12:21:31 PM nes if you count pal, schaen, the multi carts ,hacks, homebrews etc your probally looking at over
2,500 games or more then if you take in to account label varations who knows Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: atari_wizard on March 05, 2006, 02:49:49 PM Quote so whos going to try to get a complete collection for every system  |D |D |D |D Not me. |D That's a ton of games. I would never have the room for it all. I want a complete Sega Genesis collection & that's what I'm working on now. @ Wrldstrman- Do you see yourself trying to collect every game ever made? Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Tynstar on March 05, 2006, 02:50:53 PM Quote Anyone up for this project? NO!!!!!!! ;) Site Statistics for RFG Total Games: 20668 Advanced Pages: 922 Total Scans: 12549 Total Screenshots: 11992 Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Hydrobond on March 05, 2006, 04:16:12 PM Million? No.
I would say that if you include every type of video game, and every mod then you are somewhere near the 100K mark. But it is purely a guess. Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: wrldstrman on March 05, 2006, 05:58:50 PM after i finish my nes collection the only other ones i would like to complete are intellivision, colecovision atari 7800, 5200 and maybe genesis i may be 90 tho by the time i complete my nes collection.
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: NESJunkie on March 05, 2006, 09:18:29 PM I agree that there aren't a million of them, but there are a lot. There is probably no real way to count them all especially if you include PC games. I can't imagine how many of them there are plus all the variations on MAC and old Tandy's etc. Too many to count!
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: den68 on March 06, 2006, 06:42:54 AM I don't know about a million. but for sure there's at least a bazillion.
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on March 06, 2006, 07:27:52 AM I have like 80.
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: bum-man on March 06, 2006, 07:43:39 AM That settles it, there are somewhere between 80 and 1 bazillion games.
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: The Metamorphosing Leon on March 06, 2006, 08:22:49 AM Exactly my point. I think.
Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: den68 on March 06, 2006, 12:37:48 PM Quote That settles it, there are somewhere between 80 and 1 bazillion games. works for me. don't need to be any more accurate than that. Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Sauza12 on March 08, 2006, 06:32:54 AM Well, I attached a spreadsheet that I have been working on a little bit.  It needs some serious updating, but it is a pretty accurate count of all the American releases for each system.
Some stuff isn't on there (most computer games) and for systems like the C64, I am going by the list that they have at DP which only counts games released on carts. It totals around 14,000 games released for those systems. If you're going to be liberal about the game counts for different platforms, we can assume that every region outside of Japan is going to have around the same amount of total games, so add another 84,000 games (there are 8 different regions, right). Japan probably has around 3 times as many games released there (and that's probably undercutting it), so we'll say that Japan has had 42,000 games released there. Computers alone have probably had at least 100,000 games released over the years, but we'll say 150,000 just to be safe. We can lump homebrews, repros, and pirates into one group. The pirates alone probably bump this up to around a 50,000 game group. The last group we have is the "random game" section. These are games like those little LCD handhelds and the like that no one really wants but collectors, and even then its a little iffy. We'll just say there are 10,000 of those. If you add up all of my Highly unscientific numbers that are RIDDLED with errors and bad assumptions, that brings the total up to 350,000 total games. This isn't even counting web based games, and carts with multiple unique games on it. In conclusion, no there haven't been a million games. Jerk. Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: atari_wizard on March 08, 2006, 10:10:42 AM Quote Nice spreadsheet! I second that. @ Sauza12, you put some serious time into that. How long have you been tracking games for all US systems? Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Sauza12 on March 08, 2006, 12:07:25 PM Quote I second that. @ Sauza12, you put some serious time into that. How long have you been tracking games for all US systems? Thanks guys. I made that spreadsheet last year sometime and it only took me a day or two. I guess I've been keeping track of the total number of US released games since I started seriously collecting. One of the first things I did when I got into it was find out how many games were available for the systems that I had an intrest in. Title: Re: how many games are there Post by: Izret101 on March 08, 2006, 12:24:21 PM I can't see the list :-/
