this is the coolest freakin game I've ever played. I did the tutorial and tried all the tunes available in quick play. I did pass Iron Man on medium as well. I really want to start career mode tonight so I can unlock more songs.

What is the price point on it right now ?

I've been buying PS2 DDR games for a while, and when I get my tax return I will definitely consider it. Until that money shows up, however, no Guitar Hero for me.

I assume the game comes with the plastic guitar?  Or do you have to buy that separately?

I bought this about a month ago from Gamestop for $80.  It is $70 at most other places, but the one I bought from Gamestop was the first one I saw in a while

This weekend I finally beat the game on hard, and now I am going through and trying to get a 5 star ranking on all of the songs on hard.  I did this on medium and even that took a little effort on some songs.  I still have to get 5 stars on Ace of Spades, No One Knows, all of the Face melter songs, and all of the bonus songs.  Should take a while, and then I'm on to expert.

Oh yeah, and a funny little story.  One of my other friends has this, so we both brought our guitar controllers to a Superbowl party we went to.  At this point, my friend had beaten it on hard already, but I hadn't.  We started to playing head-to-head and my friend was playing with sort of a cocky demeanor.  I beat him in that match, getting 100% on Spanish Castle Magic, which of course he wasn't pleased with.  So the next match we played against each other, we were playing Texas Flood and during one of the solo parts I dropped to me knees, put the guitar behind my head and played the part perfectly en route to another perfect score.

I swear to God, I have never heard that much profanity spew from someone in my entire life.  You would have thought that I slapped one of his kids.

Sauza, funny story. i like it when someone thinks they rule in a game and you beat them hands down. the game sounds sweet. can somebody tell me if you have to have instrument skills? i've never touched a guitar before, so how hard would it be for a beginner?

The game builds up slowly. So it's pretty easy to learn.

I played through on easy so far. medium up next.

One of my friend threw a Guitar Hero party on Saturday.  We had about 20 people all drunk as hell playing some head-to-head Guitar Hero.  Since I've played it so obsessivly I was the only one that was any good.  I even beat somebody playing left handed.  However, I did suffer my first head to head loss ever........to my girlfriend.  That stung.

I normally hate music games. I so dig this. FINALLY got 5 stars on bark at the moon on medium last night. Seriously, it's worth it. The next game really needs some CCR though..

I wish I could say that I did.  We were playing More Than A Feeling and I didn't take her seriously enough.  I missed 2 notes, and she missed 1.  I lost by less than 1000 points.

I've had guitar Hero for about a month, and I have to agree with den.  The game's fucking awesome.  

I've spent an ample amount of time playing this game, and I'll have to say it is pretty awesome. I am having a much more difficult time getting acclimated to this game than any drum game, but I am sure that with practice I'll be pretty damn good. Right now I am on the last set of songs in normal mode.

This game actually brought out vile language last night.

I am determined to beat this game on expert, as impossible as it may be.  I just have to beat Frankenstien, Cowboys from Hell and Bark at the Moon.

I was playing through Bark at the Moon last night, and let me start off by saying that if you truly want to know what it's like to be overwhelmed, give this song a go through on expert.  After I got the rythym down for the verse parts and most of the fills on practice, I went through and tried to beat it on career.

My first go through, I failed with 85% of the song completed.  The next time I got through 91% of the song.

The next 10 times I played it I got through either 97 or 98% of the song.  By this point I felt that I could hack my way through the final solo and beat it.  

The last time I played I failed the song with 4 NOTES LEFT.  AAAAUUUUUGGGGHHH.  I had to quit after that.  My blood pressure was reaching dangerous levels.

I'm waaaayyyy behind you. I just finished the second group of songs on medium last night. I've only been averaging 3 stars. I think once I beat medium I'm going to replay that level to get 5 stars on everything before moving up a level.

I'm still getting my fingers tangled up. haven't quit got the hang of that hammer on/roll off or whatever stuff yet.

I beat normal mode yesterday, and I have completed two of the expert mode songs. I find the most difficult part of this game is hitting the fifth fret button and continuing the sequence. I feel this will take a lot of practice, since the 5th fret actually requires you to move your hand. I tend not to do Hammer Ons and roll offs, but I can imagine that for the hard and expert songs it will be necessary to master those techniques.

YES!!!!!  I finally beat expert last night!

I wasn't really in the mood to play last night, but I figured I'd play a song or two since Lost was a rerun.

I played my warm up song (Ace of Spades) on and then Cowboys From Hell both on hard.  I then went to expert and played Frankenstien.

I managed to beat that the first time through, passing it with 78% of the notes hit.  Hey, that song is hard so go screw yourself.

After that I figured I'd fire up Cowboys from Hell just to see if the luck was still with me.  It was, and I passed that getting 82% of the notes.

After that I figured I would try Bark at the Moon once and then stop.  I managed to pass it on my first playthrough hitting 76% of the notes.

The only thing left to do is go back and try to get 5 stars on every song on every diffuculty level!  I've already done that on Easy and Medium, I have about 5 more songs on hard to get 5 stars on, and about half of the songs on expert.  Hooray for me!

I bought Guitar Hero today!
69 dollars over at Fry's Electronics. Played throught the tutorials and have done a few "free plays". Pretty damn cool game.

I tried sitting while playing at first, but after the second song I stood up to play and did way better ;)

Should be alot of fun. :)

heh, I can't play it sitting down either. I need my arm to be free. either that or I need to be in the guitar god stance.

What is everybodies favorite song/songs to play?

What level of difficulty are you on, and was it easy to progress?

Right now I am playing through easy, and can pretty much get 4 or 5 stars on every song. High 90% scores on the notes hit as well.

I'm playing through career on medium right now. so far my favorites are Iron Man, Symphony of Destruction and Ace of Spades.

I havent unlocked Ace of Spades yet, but the other 2 songs on your list are my current favorites to play.

Maybe we should change the title of this subject to Guitar Hero talk or something like that?

I beat easy mode last night. All but 3-4 songs have 5 stars. Played a few songs a medium and did ok on them.

Cool. You can keep it again tonight since I have a hockey game and wont have time to play anyhow  ;)

Anyways, my favorite songs to play are Ace of Spades, All of This (one of the indy songs), and Take It Off.

I rated it too. Last night or first thing this morning.
Gave it a 95% as well. Fun, innovative, control is great and of course the sound kicks extreme ass. Replay value is super high as well.

Some of the songs are weak. Good songs but need to be replaced in the game.

I gave it a 95%. The most annoying part of this game is that if you play free play and set a record it does not remember your name, and as such you have to reenter your name every time a record is set.

You would think in "free play" mode, they would let you finish a set no matter how bad you were doing.  ???

Thats one of the few faults I could find with the game.  It makes learning the solos alot harder because you can't just practice that part.

Alot of guitar playing just goes off of muscle memory, so to have that taken away is kind of a pain.  I would love to be able to practice the solo in Bark at the Moon, but by the time I get to it on expert I am so close to failing that instead of trying different styles to play the solo, I just stick with what will get me through it in one peice (which mostly consists of activating star power, picking with the beat of the music and hoping that I hit the right notes).

I just got 100% on Fat Lip. It was on easy but I am still happy. Thats three 100% songs on easy now.

My favorite songs to play are Iorn man, and Cowboys from Hell.

Mine are Iron Man, Spanish Castle Magic and No One Knows.

I have yet to unlock Cowboys from Hell :(

Plus Rick took the game back so I won't be playing it much until I buy it and I have no idea when that will be :(

I wonder why Spanish Castle Magic does not include the vocal track.

I didn't know it had vocals. Maybe they couldn't use Jimmy's voice and they couldn't get someone that sounded like him.

I wonder why some of the sounds are the actual bands and some aren't.

which are actual? I thought they were all covers.

Most of them sound like the real deal.

Franz Ferdinand and Sum 41 sound identical to the real vocals, if they are not they must be damn good covers.

Some of them I think sound like the real deal. Megadeths song and the Queen song sounds nothing like the lead singers.

when your band first taked the stage and the song title appears it is followed by: "as made famous by".

I played a bit last night. I'm stiil on medium but I'm up to the set that includes Spanish Castle Magic and Crossroads.

anyone bought anything in the shop? I unlocked the Zakk Wyld song and bought the flame skin for my SG.

Just going through easy still so nothing is really open for me yet.

The only songs that aren't covers are the indy songs.  All of teh famous songs are done by cover bands.



I unlocked everything on medium, and I just have to unlock the videos and I'll have everything open in hard.  If you want to open up everything in the store, you have to get 5 stars on every song.

I bought  the BLS song and that one is hard on medium if you ask me.

I finished medium last night. it took a few tries to beat Bark at the Moon but I did. I tried Symphony of Destruction on hard and made it 64% through.

I think I'm going to stay on medium till I get more proficient at those before I move onto hard.

I beat easy the other night and have 5 stars on all but 2 songs. I played the first 2 songs on medium and nailed 5 stars on the first try.

Probably will go back and play the 2 easy songs until I can get 5 stars.

This game is awesome.  My girlfriend is better at it than me, and she doesn't ever play video games.

She's stuck on the Queens of the Stoneage medium level.  I'm stuck before that...  I haven't tried the tutorial though, I hear that helps.

I really hope that in Guitar Hero 2, they can show the bands (who are still together) what a neat project it is, and hopefully get some songs by the original artists.

The Queens of the Stone Age is the hardest song on easy I think.

Yeah, the notes on the screen don't match up with the song.  They are just a split second off.

I finished beating the rest of the songs on medium last night. there were just a few that I hadn't played yet in the groups you only needed 4 of 5 to advance.

Crossroads was the trickiest.

I finally decided to tackle the hard level. so far I've beaten the first 5 songs and 3 of 5 in the second group. I've tried 3 times on You Got Another Think Comin' and twice on Take Me Out without passing.

There's a lot more chords in hard and you have to move your hand around a lot more to hit that orange button. It's tough but fun as hell. Makes me want to go buy a real guitar.

I pass all level exept Cowboys from Hell and Bark at the Moon at Expert.

Good luck on those!  It took me no less than a dozen playthroughs on each to pass them.  I can beat them pretty regularly now, but I just barely pass them.



I actually just picked up a copy of this game for one of my friends that doesn't really like video games that much.  He doesn't even have a PS2, but after a night of playing it he decided to take the plung and get one.  

This game has the power to convert the wicked.  It's well worth sacrificing a few meals to get a PS2.

finally beat the Judas Priest and Franz Ferdinand songs on hard. I played once through each of the songs in the 3rd group. only passed the Exies tune on the first try.

I have been wanting to play this game again, but Elder Scrolls has consumed me.  :P

All I have left is Bark at the Moon on expert. I've gotten as far 98% on it, too...but that solo at the end just sucks so much. I adore this game, though...no extreme level of difficulty could stop me from enjoying it every time I play it.

I played many real instruments, but none of them helped really hard at letting move my hands around for 5 fret playing. Damn sax, clarinet, and recorder and not having to move your hands at all to play.

I've played guitar for most of my life, and I can't say it helps all that much for anything besides hammer-ons and pull-offs, which aren't really that necessary in the first place. From my experience, the most important factors are:

- How well you know the song in question
- How easily you can read the notes and pick up patterns and the like

Oh, and practice too. That's good as well.

I've had the game since late January, tons of fun.

I've not had much luck doing those. I wondered if it would really hurt my chances of beating the game.

I didn't know there was one. I just started a career.  :-/

A hammer-on is where you strum a note, and then hit the note/button above it with your left hand without strumming. A pull off is essentially the opposite - holding two buttons, playing the top one and then letting it go to play the one below it. It only works on notes that occur in rather rapid succession. It allows you to play multiple quick notes with one strum, and it's used a ton in actual guitar playing, but Guitar Hero requires you to be incredibly precise with it (hence it not being particularly necessary).

This is the sort of thing that's really hard to describe in writing, but hopefully that made sense.

I think it makes sense. I only played this game on easy. I think teh Queens of teh Stone Age song has that in it.

I've just been playing for the past 2 and a half hours. I'm still on Hard. I finished the 3rd group of songs (Heart Full Of Black gave me the most trouble) and am on to the 4th group. I beat 3 of 5 so far, still have Cochise and Take It Off to go.

I must say Unsung is quite a workout.

Yeah, it has plenty of them.

On a related note - it's subtle, but the notes actually look different when they can be played with a hammer-on or pull-off. They glow a little bit brighter as a cue that you can use them if you choose, but it's practically too subtle for its own good.

been playing for about 3 months. i've beaten hard mode, 5 starred all songs on medium and am stuck on "No one knows" on expert.

i'm a fan of a lot of music games and i hate to say it but it beats out my favs Gitaroo man, space channel 5, and mad maestro. i even bought beatmania recently but it just isnt the same as guitar hero.

anyways my favorite songs to play are Crossroads, Spanish Castle Magic, More than a Feeling (its my dedication song to my friends mom...) and Sharp dressed man.

I've not played Beatmania but I've got the other 3 you mentioned and I agree they are all great.

It's that damn nifty guitar controller that puts Guitar Hero over the top for me. get to live out those adolescent fantasies of being a rock star.

This game has actually made me pick up my real guitar again and learn some of the songs from the game.  So far I've learned Ziggy Stardust (minus the solo because I can't find the tab for it anywhere), Cowboys from Hell (minus the solo because I only have 5 fingers on my left hand and I think you need at least 7 fingers to play it), and I just started on Ace of Spades.

Also, I agree with InvadErGll about the hammer-on's and pull off's.  They expect you to be much too precise with them, and one mistimed note can screw up the entire timing of a solo.

Put down Elder Scrolls last night and picked up Guitar Hero last night. I have had a long break, and my fingers felt clumbsy. I went back down to easy to get reset, and then went back up to medium (where I am now) and played a few songs. I passed them, but cant say I was feeling good about the effort. :-/

Probably will take a few nights to get back into the swing. I did improve upon a few of my easy scores and even got 100% on more than a few of them.

I played for a bit last night and finally passed the last 2 songs in the 4th group on hard. Cochise and Take it Off. Cochise was tough, I had to memorize the opening guitar lick because I couldn't play it without looking at the buttons.

When I moved onto the 5th group of songs I beat Spanish Castle Magic and Higher Ground on the first try. the others.... well, after many attempts I did manage to pass Ace of Spades.

No One Knows and Crossroads might take a while.

No one knows is tough. (even on easy) I dont think I scored 5 stars on easy yet for thatr song. Then again, I really havent been motivated to play it either. :P

I won't be able to play it tonight and i probably should't have bought it at all...

But either way i hope to play it soon.

grrrrrr! still stuck on No One Knows and Crossroads on hard. I did get further on No One Knows (81%) but still can't pass it.

I finally got frustrated and started playing expert. I beat 4 of the first 5 songs on the first try. just have to beat Smoke On The Water.

After I played a few on expert was when I was able to get 81% through No One Knows.

No One Knows is my favorite song to play. Well at least on Easy. I scored over 150k on it but I messed up a few times.

I am pretty pissed that Guitar Hero won't work in our PS2.
I am going to have to work some magic on it.
Or just use my cuz's.

Is there and right/wrong way to hold the frets?

not really. on easy and medium you only use 3 then 4 of the 5 buttons. you could try a finger per button. once you get to hard and expert and add the 5th button you have to move your hand. once you have a feel for where the buttons are it doesn't matter which finger you use. whatever is comfortable.

Do you guys use your pinky for frets, or just 3 fingers?

I play with all 4 fingers.  Once you get to expert, you pretty much have too.

I think I have 5 more songs on easy to have 100% on all of them. I have started to go back through medium to get 5 stars on of of them/. I have a few. Crossroads if the only song with no stars.

I finally passed Crossroads! On to the last set of 5 songs on hard.

I played each once and it looks like Bark at the Moon is going to be toughest again.

Finally 5 got 5 stars on every easy song. Hit 100% of the notes on a few more songs on easy. Progressed through the 4th set on Medium. Every song has bee easy enough to pass, but it will take time to master them.

I was trying to ge 5 stars on every song before advancing a difficulty but was too curious to try the next level. as it gets harder it feels more like playing a real guitar. I do use the easier levels to warm up and have been finishing off getting all 5 stars.

4 more to on hard. knocked off Godzilla this morning. I got half way through Texas Flood and Frankenstein and 70% into Cowboys from hell before failing.

Anybody read the article about GH2 in Game Informer?

Obviously they didnt break anything that hasn't allready been said, but the news sure does look good :) I guess since the first game was such a success, it is alot easier this time around to get artist to agree to them using thier songs.

The addition of practice mode is going to be sweet! Now you can go over those hard parts in a song without fear of making a mistake. Slowing it down and really practicing :)

excellent, Anthrax made the game. I was kind of hoping for I Am The Law though.

I would have liked something else from the 80's other than Motley Crue, but I won't complain.

Well, since there are going to be 60 some songs, and they have announced 12ish songs I think you may still get that opportunity.

I recently saw the controller-only on display for $39.99. Which leads me to believe that the game by itself could eventually become a Greatest Hits (no pun intended) for $19.99 and you could buy the controller separately.

Ideally, I'd like to see this game (with controller) drop to about 50 bucks before I pick it up, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen any time soon...

It's probably going to be white. It wouldn't surprise me, though, if they came out with different colors eventually...or if a type of face-plate could be attached.

Found out that the default guitar controller for the 360 is a wired controller. Don't know if there's any plans for a wireless.

Hopefully they make a wireless controller down the road. More colors would be pretty sweet as well.

I pre-ordered Guitar Hero II at Best Buy last night. Got a cool tee shirt for going it.

I don't know if anybody else saw this, but apparently the "boss" song on Guitar Hero 2 is going to be Hangar 18!   :drool:  I went into a short coma after I heard this.

I heard there is a song with 11 solos in it. Hangar 18 has 11 solos in it. As soon as I read a song with 11 solos I thought Hangar 18 and got really happy!

what is it with this game. i watched my dude play it and it looks gay like those dance dance revolution games, donky konga, samba di amigo, etc. thats just my two cents. to each its own.

I thought the same thing until I tried it. Now I think it kicks ass. I will still never try a dance game.

Although I don't own it, to give it a fair chance I tried it out (courtesy of den68) and definitely found it fun and interesting to play. I'm waiting for GH2 to come out on the 360 before getting my own copy, though.

Donkey Conga was also fun, but seems more geared to a younger audience. That being said, it could make for a nasty college drinking game...

I played War Pigs today at GameStop, damn it's long, and damn it's tiring. Excellent play though.

The 7th is going to be BIG for games! Not only is GH2 coming out, but Call of Duty 3 and Gears of War!

I stopped by Gamestop yesterday to try out GH2. I played War Pigs, You Really Got Me and YYZ on hard. I beat the first 2 but only got 38% into YYZ. Damn this game is going to be sweet. The demo I played only had 10 songs available. One thing I did notice that was different was that in You Really Got me there were parts were you had to hold 3 buttons at once. I can't wait.

I've been playing the Demo on Expert and have gotten through all of Shout at the Devil, Stutter, and You Really Got Me, but YYZ kicks my ass evey time after about 30%.

We have a full version of this at the store that noone is able to touch till street date.

I haven't seen or played the demo but you guys are way outta my league either way.

I went down to Gamestop on Saturday to payoff my reservation and played some of the demo.  I fired up soem Strutter and YYZ.

YYz is pretty hard, but I still managed to get 4 stars on it (on hard).  When I was done I had a crowd behind me watching, which was pretty cool.  ;D  The funny part is after I was done I went about browsing the shelves and I kept hearing people humming or whistling YYZ.  GH2, bring Rush back in style with the viscosity.

Does anybody know if Gamestop will be opening up at midnight tonight to sell this game?  I don't think I can possibly wait to play it any longer. EDIT: I just called them up, and no they are not opening at midnight  :(.

I played for a bit last night. I tried to start with easy but couldn't do it. I jumped right into hard. I ended up beating 21 songs plus one bones track, the one by Soy Bomb.

Is it me or does it seem a bit easier than the first one? Maybe I was doing so well because I've been so pumped to play it.

I liked the fact that the 5th song in each group was the encore. Then it goes to a map and you drive to the next town. I'm currently in Detroit. The new characters are good too, especially Lars Umlaut.

Can't wait to play tonight. I gotta try co-op too.

OK, I guess that guy is better than me.  Damn.  I was thinking about trying to tap out some notes with the pick hand like this guy did.  Now I guess I know that it's possible.

I played through medium last night and got 5 stars on everything and got 100% on about half of them.  I probably could have got 100 on all of them but medium bores me SOOOOOOO much.  I did play Hangar 18 on hard, and it is an Fing blast.  I can get 4 stars on it, but thats it.

Btw Den, I am planning on having a Guitar Hero party  soon, so I'll let you know when I'm planning it.  If you are going to have people at your house, let me know and I'm there.

knocked off 10 more songs last night. Jessica was pretty fun. the whole song is pretty much one long guitar solo.

I also tried the co-op with my wife. The cool thing is that both players can select their difficulty. My wife was easy and I was hard. uh... wait, that didn't come out right. We played Strutter and Message In The Bottle. I also tried the bass for Message In The Bottle. Much easier than lead but pretty cool all the same.

I beat medium mode last night, now I need to go through and get 5 stars on all the songs (got it handed to me by Psychobilly Freakout, 4 stars). I've noticed that hard mode in Guitar Hero is actually hard this time around, and that practice mode kicks so much ass. I really wish that the first one had the practice mode.

Knocked off 3 more this morning on hard. Madhouse, Carry Me Home and Laid To Rest. Now we're getting tough. Laid To Rest took a couple tries, Carry Me Home about 6.

I also tried Psychobilly Freakout. That one is going to be a serious challenge. I tries practice mode at a slower speed and it mesed me up even more. I think I need to go back and try this one at the easier levels to get more familiar with it. I guess that means I gotta play though those levels now.

Got past YYZ. I played the last group a few times and didn't beat any. I got 80% through Hangar 18.

It'll be a while before i step into expert on this one, hard is giving me a helluva time as it is.  :P

Co-op sure is fun though, I find rhythm guitar much more fun than bass, is it just me or does the bass during co-op have a lower volume than the track does in solo mode? Or maybe lead is made louder I'm not sure, but it seems to get drowned out allot, whereas rhythm blends in very nicely.

I beat hard mode, and I got 5 stars on everything but level 6 songs and above.  Some of those songs I don't know if I'll ever get 5 stars on, but damn it I'm going to try.

Also here is my list of songs that make me angry everytime I play them.

Stop - I don't even have any desire to play this song again to get 5 stars.  Not because it's too hard, but because the song fucking sucks

Killing in the Name - What?  How the Hell did this song make the cut?  I need to write a letter.  You know what, you can just count all the songs in this group as shitty.  None of them are any good.  Last Child.  That's the best Aerosmith song they could come up with?

Institutionalized - Not only is this song retarded hard, but it makes me cry a little bit when I think that somewhere out there right now, somebody actually enjoys this song.  Mankind is lost.

Freya - Here's a change.  I actually don't mind the song.  Not exactly my cup of tea, but not bad.  The thing is there is a stretch in this song that bores me to tears everytime I play it.  I can't tell you what it is because the memory of playing it is to painful and I've put a wall around it to keep from collapsing into an uncontrollable mess.

Made In Mexico - These fuckers made the cut AGAIN???  Are you fucking kidding me????

and now the ones that kind of caught me by suprise as to how fun they are

Madhouse - For some reason, this one suprised me.  I guess I just never saw Scott Ian as all that special compared to other guitarists.  But I'm starting to change my mind.  This song is unrelenting and a blast to play.

Carry Me Home - This is another unrelenting song that is just fun to play.  I have never even heard of this song before this game.  Very nice suprise.

Girlfriend - This song isn't all that hard, but I love the fills that are thrown in here and there.  Keeps you on your toes while you're playing it and keeps it from getting boring

Monkeywrench - Play it on expert.  It looks really chaotic, but it actually has a managable chord structure.  If only my arm didn't go numb halfway through the song.  ;D

dude Institutionalized is a great song. It's on the Repo Man Soundtrack and I had that puppy in the cassette deck of my car (actually a cassette adapter in the 8-Track player) almost non-stop when I was in high school.

Maybe I'm just not giving it enough of a chance, but I just can't see the appeal of that song.  The only redeeming quality of it is that the guitarist has some serious chops, but there doesn't seem to be any semblance of cohesion in what he's playing.

In other news, I decided to try for 5 stars on all of the songs on hard.  Yesterday I got 5 on Stop, Rock this Town, and Carry Me Home.  I still have 2 or 3 songs on the next to hardest difficulty and all of the songs on the hardest difficulty.

I got 5 stars on YYZ, Beast and the Harlot, and Freebird yesterday.  5 more songs to go.

played a bit of GH 2 last night. I beat Miserlou on hard. this is the first song that I actually used practice mode on. it did help too. I played through a few of the tricky part a few times then went back and beat it on my next try.

For some reason I didn't go to sleep last night, so I played a little Guitar Hero last night.  Despite my lack of sleep, I actually managed to get 5 stars on a couple songs that I thought would take me a while, both on hard:

I knocked off a few more on hard last night. Beast and the Harlot, Institutionalized and Hangar 18. I played Free Bird once and got 73% through. then I had to quit because it was time for My Name Is Earl.

took a few more cracks at Freebird and got 90% through. then I decided to pop in GH1 and I finally beat Bark At The Moon on hard. that damn Texas Flood is still stumping me though.

I finally beat GH2 on expert.  Freebird was a bitch.  When you fail the song after playing it for 8 minutes and notice you only got through 80% of the song, it sort of dashes your desire to play it again.  So far this is the first song that I actually had to practice on.

Once you play this on expert for a while, hard seems waaaaay to easy.  After I beat Freebird, I went back to hard and got 5 stars on Misirlou, Institutionalized, and 4 stars on Psychobilly Freakout.  Up until that point I wasn't able to get more than three stars on Institutionalized and Psychobilly Freakout.

Now I'm thinking of making Institutionalized my "show-off" song.  I hate to admit it, but that song is starting to grow on me.  ;)

I took Guitar Hero II to work yesterday. We shut down about 2:30 and had a little impromptu party in the conference room. Our conference room has a Smartboard which is basically a huge freakin' TV with a monster sound set up. We had the thing cranked up LOUD. There were about 25 people in there and about 10 gave it shot. It was a blast. Everyone played on easy and a few beat their song on the first try. I played a few on hard. Everyone was cheering and shouting out what songs they wanted to hear. I even got one of the owners to give it a try. We played till about 5:00.  Great Great party game!!

heh heh, that I did.

For those interested, I just got the wireless redoctane controller today. Heres a short little synopsis:

• The controller is purely right handed in design so if you are left handed or play lefty flip you are S.O.L.
• the body itself is nicely weighted and has a nice gloss finish feel to it.
• takes 3 AAA batteries (pain in the ass to deal with with most of your other crap is AA instead lol)
• Has a nice little on/off switch on the back to save on battery life.
• The buttons are softer feeling than even the newer design of the SG, takes a bit to get used to but overall its nice for extended play. Same goes for the strum bar.
• There is no lag time from button press to the system. even during heavy sections it picks up nicely.

overall for the $59.99 it costs its definitely a worth wile investment if you play alot and want to rock a little harder, i.e. showing off at social events hehe.

I played a little more this morning while I was waiting for a tow truck to take my car to the shop (sigh...) and got 5 stars on Tattooed Love Boys on Expert.  I also managed 4 stars on Bad Reputation and Beast and the Harlot.

The possibility of that extra port found on the 360 guitar for use with pedals sure sounds interesting.

Awful late in the game's development to have not announced it 2 months before release?
If this is coming in March then I think the 360 version will be put off in favor of the PS2 expansion, well at least in my house anyway. We already have 1 and 2 plus 2 guitars, save us allot of money to just buy an expansion for the ps2 than to invest in the 360's by buying 2 guitars plus download costs for the rest of the songs from 1 and these 80's ones which will no doubt make it to the 360 soon enough.

last night my 7 year old daughter beat her first song on Guitar Hero. She beat Iron Man. It was the first time she tried to play the game by herself and she beat it on the second try. I was a proud papa.

She's come a long way since Donkey Konga!

Yesterday my friend 72% Jordan on expert with a controller (he can 5 star it with the guitar). It could have been the craziest thing I have seen videogame wise.

Allison has knocked off 7 songs on easy on Guitar Hero II. It's amazing watching her play. She's only seven and her little fingers barely reach the buttons.

well yesterday i got 93% through cowboys from hell on expert, i want to beat that song so badly, its driving me nuts

I was at Best Buy today and they had the 360 version of GH II set up to play. I was dissappointed that none of the new songs were available in the demo. I guess I'll have to wait till phoenix gets it to play the Trooper.

I gotta admit I do not like the Explorer guitar. the pointed ends were pretty uncomfortable. maybe I'm just used to the SG from the PS2 version. the buttons didn't feel right either. I played Sweet Child of Mine on hard which I normally breeze through and found myself fumbling over the fret board.

I'm curious to hear from anyone else who may have tried it that has played the hell out of the PS2 version.

I played a little of the first Guitar Hero last night. I knocked off No One Knows and Godzilla on expert. Only 4 left to beat, Texas Flood, Frankenstein, Cowboys From Hell and Bark At The Moon.

I still have 14 to beat on expert on GH2.

only 2 more to go. I got 98% through Bark at the Moon. I had to stop playing because my hand was cramping up.

Made it through the Easy tour last night. And got all the way to the last set of songs on Medium before calling it a night...at 4:30AM. Glad I don't have to work today.

The toughest song so far seemed to be Crazy by Heart. It seemed a little faster paced for a song on medium. I almost failed it but pulled through at the end. Phew!

To all the GH experts out there. When would you advise making the jump from Medium to Hard level? Right now I'm skating by on Medium (most songs at 3 stars, and a few 4's) and am curious as to if everyone out there decided to get 5 stars on Medium before moving on to Hard or if you just jumped right into Hard right after completing the Medium tour?

Does it make the transition from Medium to Hard level easier if you get 5 star rankings on all the Medium songs or doesn't it matter?

Picked up GHII today for the 360. I will report my progress later.

I jumped right in to hard. That's where the real fun starts anyway, but I breezed through easy and medium. If you're struggling with songs on medium it may not hurt to try to 5 star a few before moving up. At the very least play a few as warm ups before tackling songs on hard.

I 5-starred the Easy Tour to unlock a new guitar and some achievement points. Now I'm working on 5-starring the Medium tour to do the same. Got about 12-15 songs knocked out so far.

And I bought all the songs from the Store. 

I started playing GHII this weekend. I am playing on easy and I have unlocked the set containing John the Fisherman. That song is amazing and the fact that you can play the bass makes it even better. But other then that I am disappointed in the song selections. In every set there is only 1 song I really like and 2-3 songs I can cares less about. I hope the remaining sets are better. At least i will be able to get the Guitar Hero 1 songs from the market place.

I've 5-starred half the songs on the Medium tour and beat my first song on Hard!

On medium, I noticed that if you match the last attempt (star-wise), you don't get any money. You have to get the next level or higher. Does this happen at every difficulty?

basically it works out like this, when you beat any song on the main tiers from medium up through expert you get cash. each song has a set amount of cash you can earn for it on a difficulty. you can either get all the cash for the song by just five starring it or progressing and getting the cash in increments by 3 starring, 4 starring, then 5 starring.

Example:
song A yields a total of $600 dollars on one difficulty
3 starring first try = $100
4 starring after 3 starring = $200
5 starring after 3 and 4 starring = $300

4 starring first = $300 (sum of 3 starring and 4 starring)
5 starring after only 3 starring = $500 (sum of 4 and 5 starring)

5 starring first try = $600

That makes sense. However, I wonder if they changed it some. Because I've seen amounts of $150, $250, and $450 along the way.

It's official. On teamxbox last night I read that Guitar Hero 3 will be coming out this fall for the Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, Wii and even the DS(?).

GH I song packs now available on Xbox live. Thank god I've got the PS2 version  :o

In exchange for 500 points you can get one of the following three clusters, for just over $2 per song:

    * Pack 1: "Bark at the Moon," "Hey You," "Ace of Spades"
    * Pack 2: "Killer Queen," "Take it Off," "Frankenstein"
    * Pack 3: "Higher Ground," "Infected," "Stellar"

By this standard, the 48 songs of GH (selling for $40 new on PS2) would cost you just under $100 on Live.

I was hoping the DLC songs on XBL from GH1 wouldn't be so pricey. However, if I can't find a GH1 PS2 bundle, then I might have to just be picky about which song packs I buy. 

you don't need to find the bundle. ju3t get a PS2 guitar separate. those are everywhere, heck.. get a wireless one. then you just need GH1.

That's one of the problems with microtransactions. They never lower prices of content, even stuff that's been on the marketplace since launch in 2005 is still the same price.

Most of the time that's true, Tan. However, Halo 2's map packages started out with a cost, and ended up being free after awhile.

So it's possible that costs will drop, but you're right that it's unfortunately not likely.

2 bucks for 3 songs? That's not to bad. I only want a handful of songs from GHI anyways. I would never buy any of the songs you could unlock.

For achievements I played through a song on Easy successfully with "lefty flip" on. Then I kept it on to get a 2nd achievement(?) for failing a song on Easy.

Get there early! I'll have it on the big TV. I bought a switch box recently so now 4 of my consoles are hooked up it.

So, we can play it before we get into our multiplayer mayhem. And then again at the end of the evening.

"Dead!" is really fun song to play. 

Got another 4 songs 5-starred on Medium to bring the total to 41/48. Finally beat Crazy On You! Having some serious trouble with Institutionalized, though. Haven't been able to get better than a 3/5.

Used the Practice mode for some songs on Hard. Hard difficulty really makes you have to develop an entirely new strategy, hand placement, etc.

my hand placement varies from song to song. you do need to develop some agility in your pinky though. there's no avoiding that.

You're right. And beyond pinky agility, I have to develop the ability to slide down from chord to chord, and then back up to green. I think it would've helped if they would've made a mode between hard and medium...just to deal with the speed difference.

I'm still getting used to hammer-ons and pull-offs on Medium difficulty! Got a long way to go...

 

Finally 5-starred YYZ on Medium. Got 6 songs left.

Also got the 200K points in a song achievement on Free Bird. 213K still only got me 4 stars, though.

As much as I'd love to have Zep and AC/DC, I'm doubful they could do justice to the voices of Robert Plant or Bon Scott/Brian Johnson with their cover artists.

You never know. Remember the band Kingdom Come? Their frontman sounded a LOT like Plant.

It's not so much finding someone who sounds like Plant, but more about finding someone who's more than just a fine clinical player. The studio artists used in GH are just that: studio artists. If they had that extra bit that makes someone a rockstar they wouldn't be working as cover artists and players for wages or salaries, they'd be touring in their own bands. None of the cover artists in either GH games can fool anyone with their performances. They are good, but not comparable to the originals.

Besides I'm sure if they got Lenny Wolf to do a track it'd prob be a KC or a Stone Fury one anyway, KC being labeled a Led Zeppelin clone has hampered him for years.

I agree 100%. But without the studio artists and song licensing agreements, we wouldn't have Guitar Hero. 

Hopefully, more of the original artists will agree to let their original tracks be added to the game.

Forgive me for being so "out of it" but how does this actually work? I looked it up on Wikpedia and the official site but neither really presented the detailed logistics of it. All I could gather is that the small plastic instrument seems to have only five or so buttons located where the first few frets would be and a "strum" button where the pickups are located on a real instrument. Granted I have not read through the entire 25 pages of this lengthy thread but you all seem to be very familiar with it. I was hoping someone also wouldn't know what it is and that a dissertation would've been present from way back towards the beginning.
Perhaps a silly question but wouldn't it be more fun and rewarding to acquire an actual guitar and amp? That way you can play whatever you want and you're actually really playing it not just some electronic simulation. Of coarse, being a bass player I would suggest getting a bass instead of a normal six string.  ;)

I can play guitar also but GH is a completely different challenge believe me. It's a game of reflexes, speed and style for high scores. The "guitar" is about the size of a student guitar or a bit smaller so it's not quite the "little toy" you may think it is. Besides the fret buttons and strummer there's is a whammy bar and also a motion sensor which is used for "star power" as well as a strap.

It's very much a party game and so easy to pick up and play it takes little practice. You can also use a dual-analog controller but that defeats the purpose of it. Unless your also going to belt out the tune and play at the same time, it's apples and oranges to having a guitar and amp. Even some of the original artists of some of he songs on that game can't even play it properly. Think of it like a DDR type game you can play sitting down or standing up.

Also your performance will dictate the crowds reaction and how the song sounds. Miss a note it sounds terrible, miss too many they boo you off stage, do awesome and the applause turns into a roar of approval. It's an immersive game enviroment as well, with a complete band on stage as well as different venues. You can buy new skins, songs, characters and other stuff with the money you earn for your performances.

Guitar Hero II lets you play bass through the songs. Also it has a Primus song and if you like the bass you have to like Primus. Les Claypool is the man!

I guess I'd have to see it actually being played. Just seems like your choices would be very limited with only those few buttons. Unlike the myriad of positions with actual strings.
And yeah, I usually do sign along while playing. Either out loud or in my head at least.

The main focus of the game is the performance itself, not the technique of playing chords off a tab sheet.  ;)

I would never presume to feel qualified to write a review for a game I haven't completely beaten yet. Still things to unlock, modes to finish etc. I'd be leaving vital things out. You know that's the biggest problem with game reviews these days, they don't spend enough time with these games to give a well-rounded perspective.

I was at phoenix's place friday night and got to REALLY try out the 360 version. I played all 8 liscensed tracks on hard and beat then all. It took 2 tries to beat the Trooper though. I'd have to say that one is the most fun of the new songs, though I am biased towards Maiden.

Dead was really good too and actually was performed by My Chemical Romance. It wasn't that hard though. I've watched it played on expert on You Tube and it features a lot of 3 button chords that look brutal.

I was surprised to see a Rick Derringer song but Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo was to me the second most fun song to play of the new ones.

The rest were still fun but REALLY easy.

I still have an issue with the guitar though. I did get a little more used to it after a few songs but it still felt a bit awkward compared to the PS2 guitar. phoenix said the buttons are closer together, I'm sure that's what was throwing me off.

And the fret bar is a little shorter on the X-plorer guitar than on the PS2 SG.

A real left handed Guitar Hero controller! Once I get the game, I'm definitely modding my guitar to be like this. It's really tough to play the game left handed because the whammy bar gets in the way a lot, but now it's right where it should be.

I'm left-handed as well but fortunately for me I'm fairly ambidextrous in most things. Easier that way so I don't have to drag a leftie axe everywhere I play the game.  :P

Jimi never had a problem with that whammy bar being in the wrong spot.

Just go into settings and set it up to play with "Lefty flip" on.

Yeah. I always use lefty flip. It works OK, but the whammy gets in the way and it's annoying at times. I can live with it though.

Can't wait for them, I am a huge GH fan. Now, if only I can get the solos down for Jordan on expert...which will never happen. I have five starred about almost all of the sogns on expert except a few at in the last tiers.

So, is a left hander supposed to strum a guitar with his left hand? If so, screw that, my left hand is much more dexterous in moving fingers, as there is no lefty flip for a saxophone or clarinet.

Yes. Lefty flip means strumming with the left hand.

Rock Band is due November. And it looks like they're going to sell the components separately. I was at EB/Gamestop and saw that the game (for 360) was $59.99 (standard price), but that the accessories were $79.99 (drum set, wireless guitar) and $59.99 (microphone).

From what I've heard, it's also very likely that Guitar Hero controllers from the 360 and PS2 should be compatible with Rock Band.

Microphone is $60?! What in the ever living hell?! It costs like 50 for SingStar on PS2 and they give you the mic. That can't be the price for the mic.

Activision says Harmonix's new game, Rock Band, is a Guitar Hero (developed by Harmonix!) imitator.

Beat medium last night. I had been getting 5 stars all all the songs up until the 7th set. I only got half of those 5 starred the others are 4. I got my first 3 star on "Carry Me Home", what a pain in the ass. On the last set I got a couple 5 stars and the rest are 4 stars.

I'm on the last set on Hard, but I still haven't 5-starred Institutionalized on Medium (damn...I've grown to HATE that song!). I want that achievement dammit!

The Trooper is on the 360 version of GH II. Wrathchild plays on Sirius a lot and it isn't that good IMO. Where is Run to the Hills, Powerslave or Aces High.

I like Wrathchild. it's odd they chose a Paul Di'anno era Maiden song though. Aces High would have been cool. my first choice would have been Wasted Years.

Paul Di'anno is why I don't like the song I think. I know Maiden with Bruce so it sounds really strange. Wasted Years would be nice.

Rock Band is supposed to have the ability to play the Drums by themselves just like the guitar.

Well I got 5 starts on Freebird my first try so I beat Medium. I 5 stared all the songs but "Carry Me Home". What a pain in the ass. It is the only song I got 3 stars on. I did play it again and got 4 stars so maybe today i will get 5. I also bought all the extra songs.

I did play Surrender on Hard and got 3 stars. That orange button and speed will take some getting use to.

Yeah. That speed and Orange button adjustment takes a little while to get used to, but it's like riding a bike once you do.

Sounds like Carry Me Home is to you what Institutionalized is to me...the last song to 5-star on medium. I'm sure we'll both get that 5-star one day.

Have fun with Hard. Carry Me Home on Hard is an absolute BITCH on the intro. And if I survive it, I've at best made it through 33% so far. And 5-starring is no picnic...still only at 3 or 4 on everything there.

Passed Beast and the Harlot on Hard. 4 songs to go!

Also got past Strutter on Expert, which was tripping me up. Then I went on to pass the next 7 songs on Expert on the 1st try until I got to Carry On Wayward Son (89%). 12 total songs passed on Expert so far.

I finally got 5 stars on Carry Me Home. So thats 5 stars on all the medium songs. I also finished beating all the songs you can buy in the store.

Good job. I still haven't 5 starred Institutionalized on Medium yet... :P

just finished Rocks The 80's on hard. I actually started playing it yesterday on expert and beat 11 songs before I realized it.

There were a few stinkers (Billy Squier) but I loved it. I know I'm biased because I think Guitar Hero is the greatest game ever but I loved it.

finally i fucking did it, i beat CBH on expert and earned my axe. Also i just bought Guitar hero 80s today and beat that on expert (my god is "play with me" insane).

Finally beat GH2 Hard Tour last night! Got 18 songs (3 tiers) left on Expert.

It's really freaking hard to go from medium to hard. Not only did they throw another fret in on you, but they sped it up as well. WTF? I can tear it up on medium, but can't get past the 2nd tier on hard on GH2. "Woman" screws me up every time about halfway through.

At least I was able to beat "Possum Kingdom" on expert. I imagine that is probably the easiest song in the game.

If there's one complaint I've got about GH, it's that you should be able to choose how many frets you want to play with on the easier modes.

Picked up GHII for the 360 over the weekend.  Talk about an awesome game.  So far I've stuck in the easy setting practicing every song.  I'm going to bump up to normal or medium tonight.

That's sweet. I saw them at the Allstate Arena in March, which is right outside Chicago. While "musically" not the best concert I've ever been to, the show they put on was probably the best I've ever seen.

As far as their songs on Guitar Hero, has anyone tried "This Is How I Disappear"? That song is pretty damn hard for the difficulty level it's on. I played it on medium and saw orange (5th fret) notes. WTF? I've never seen one on another medium song ever!

Alright guys I'm new to the whole Guitar Hero fad, but enjoying myself so far.  I just finished all the songs on GH2 on the medium difficulty, but trying to advance to Hard is just kicking my ass.  I've probably tried 3-4 times on each song in the first set list without being able to finish any of them.  Anyone else have a really difficult time trying to adjust to the harder difficulty settings?  Practice makes perfect, but a difficulty setting in between medium and hard would have been much appreciated.

The difficulty jump from medium to hard is a tough one. I think almost everyone on these boards that plays the game has stated the same thing at one time or another (myself included). It just takes getting a little more comfortable with the speed adjustment and the fact that you have to move your hand.

You'll get it. It just takes awhile longer than the adjustment from easy to medium.

Anyone got tips for Jordan? Can't seem to get past the 56% mark. I know once I finish solo C the song is a cakewalk, so I think I have about another 3 or 4% before I 'beat' the song. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Anyway, I need some tips on how to make it to solo D.

on some of the solo parts where the notes run up and down in succession I've seen people slide one finger across the buttons rasther than trying to push them individually. I haven't had much success with this but it's worth a shot.

or you could cheat and just make sure you have a full star power bar and activate just before the solo.

At lunch, I played a song on the demo available in the new Tony Hawk game while at EB. "Hit me with your best shot!" was one of the 5 songs. I'll definitely download the demo on Monday when it's available on XBLA. :D

Seems like the same gameplay, but with new graphics, presentation, etc. Looks like it will be yet another solid addition to the Guitar Hero franchise.

I'm assuming you have the Xbox 360 version of GH2.  If you have a PS2, I would highly recommend playing part one first, because the game itself is a bit harder and less forgiving.  It probably took me twice as long to beat part one as it took me to beat part two.  Playing part one first really breaks some bad habits you can develop playing part 2.

As for making the transition from medium to hard, the two main problems your going to run into is the increased speed and the addition of the fifth note.  The hammer on/pull off sections are tricky too, but there's no real way to get used to them other than time.

 Getting used to the fifth note is the easier thing to adapt to.  After playing the first 5 or so songs, try to get a feel for moving your hand into the two different positions:  the lower position (with your first finger on the green button, no finger on the orange button), and the higher position (Pinky on the orange button, no finger on the green button).  The safest place to start a song from is in the higher position because it's much easier to slide your first finger down to the green button than it is to slide your pinky up to the orange button.  Some songs are going to make you run your fingers all over the fretboard at all times, so you will also have to break out of the trance that medium diffuculty can put you in:  that is that each finger only has one button to worry about.  I've seen it more times than I can count where somebody is playing it on hard when a green button comes up and they are hitting red.  That is why having your hand in the two different positions is helpful, because it helps you remember which finger is hitting which button.

The best way to go about getting used to the faster speed is to listen to the song uninterrupted and get used to the strumming pattern in the song.  If you can keep your strums in beat with the song, the spacing of the notes won't matter as much.  It will eventually get to the point that you will only be looking for the colors of the buttons  rather than the spacing of the notes, which gives you one less thing to worry about.

I'd go into getting the hammer ons and pull offs right, but that is really nto the most important thing if you are just looking to pass the songs at this point.  Once you get more used to listening for strumming patterns and switching between hand positions, hammer ons and pull offs become much easier.

I am a complete nerd. I spent 2 hours on Jordan Medium trying to get 100%. And I did. Twice. ;D

I hate Jordan.  It's the only song from any of the games I can't beat.  Well, actually I don't think I've beaten one of the other bonus songs, but Jordan still is ridiculous.

I did. I'm already 25 songs through hard. I also won my challenges against Tom Morello and Slash, though I'm not exactly sure how.

I have the PS2 version. I like that the guitar is wireless but it feels different. After muddling though a few songs and only passing with 3 stars I plugged in the GH2 guitar and proceeded to 5 star 6 of the next 8 I played. I guess I'll have to get used to the feel of it.

I decided to pick it up as well. Got through 27 of 42 on Hard.

I like the new wireless guitar. Got the Best Buy deal with the free Sex Pistols faceplate.

The seems that the game is a little more forgiving this time around when it comes to scoring. For example, there was a song that I got 93% on but still got a 5-star rating? Must've hit star power just right or something.

It looks like there's 5 characters to unlock in the Store. I've figure out 4 of the 5, but haven't figured out the last one yet. Must be another boss battle somewhere down the road.

The stars on Guitar Hero are based around your total score, not so much the note percentage you get.  If you could find a way to hit 100,000 points but only hit 75% of the notes, you could get 5 stars.  And you are right, there is one more battle before the end, but I'm going to save it as a surprise because it is really well done. 

I beat GH3 on hard last night.  I 5 starred most of the songs, but I played yesterday morning and only three starred a bunch of the songs in the 3rd to last tier.  I just can't play it in the morning.  Oddly enough, on the last set of songs Raining Blood is the first song you are supposed to play and that is the only one out of the group that I had trouble with.  It is retardedly hard.

I've just got Raining Blood and One to beat on hard before the final battle.

Decided to go for $$$ to unlock all the characters, so I played on Medium yesterday and 5-starred 35 of 37 songs (only missed on CoP and 1 other one); on the last set now. Strangely enough, dropping back to Medium seemed to help my skill with hammer-ons and pull-offs.

Finally got past The Metal on Hard and beat Pride and Joy. 2 sets to go. Since I've never heard of any of the songs on the next to last set, I may be there awhile. 

Beat the 1st set on Expert.

I guess I should probably play medium too. I don't really want too.

Yay 500.  In over a year I matched General Tynstar's bi-monthly quota.  That must be some sort of accomplishment.

I just got it at 8:30 tonight. How the hell do you survive the transition from medium to hard?!! Its f-ing impossible.

You just need to get used to moving your hand to hit the orange button and the speed increase. Stick with it, you'll get it.

Meantime, I finished the tour on Medium tonight with 5-stars on all but Raining Blood (My new most-hated song...I'll put it right next to Institutionalized). Also made it to the final set in Hard. And beat 15 songs on Expert (currently Paint it Black is kicking my ass).

I can't do Raining Blood on Hard for the life of me. That first mosh part is ruthless. But I went and did the advanced tutorial and the whole thing is pretty much pull-offs. SO I just gotta get my accuracy up and maybe I'll be able to finish the song for a change.

that's the part I'm stuck on too. I decided to take a break and start expert. I beat 7 so far. I 5 starred Hit Me With Your Best Shot on the first try... though it was pretty east for expert.

I played through some of the Co-Op Career on GH3 last night. The set list is different and there are 44 songs instead of 42 like single player career. The first set was Barracuda, Slow Ride, When We Were Young, Bulls On Parade and the encore was Sabotage by the Beastie Boys.

You can play through co-op at different difficulties. If you change them you start over. You don't have to stick with the same instrument each song though. You can switch between guitar on bass on a song by song basis. Each player just has to play through on the same difficulty level they started at.

I beat Medium today, and am making the shift to medium on hyperspeed 3, and hard mode, no hyperspeed. Dragon Force is impossible, even on medium no hyperspeed! I got to about 75% twice, and then I decided my arm was too tired. :D

Raing Blood on expert has me a broken man.  I have played that song no less than 30 times, and I can't get further than 39%.  I wouldn't mind so much, but the only reason I can't beat it is because of the mosh 1 section.  I can get through everything before that without missing a note, but I always fail right near the end of mosh 1.  I even have star power saved up and I can't beat it.

I've come to complete standstill on GH2 and GH3. On 2 I can't get past Psychobilly Freakout or Carry Me Home on expert. I've played both dozens of times and practiced many times as well. On 3 I'm stuck on Raining Blood and One... but still on hard. These I've tried maybe 10 times each. I thought I was pretty good at his game but apparently I still suck.

Den, we're at the same spot on GH3. The only song in that set I've beaten was Mark of the Beast. The Hard tour is REALLY hard on that last set! :P

On a lighter note, I downloaded the Foo Fighters song pack last night and it's awesome! This is a Call is a BITCH on Hard, though...still haven't beaten it. I've never downloaded any of the GH song packs before (still debating the My Chemical Romance pack on GH2), but the Foo Fighters one on GH3 is definitely worth the points. 8)

I'm a little late to the party, as always.

On GHIII (PS2), I'm on Lou on Hard and Before I Forget on Expert.  Finished the game on Medium.  Besides the way they messed up multi-player, to me this is probably the best in the series so far.

Raining Blood...that took me FOREVER on Hard.  Just like you guys I would hit 38-39% and flunk out.  Finally got where I could hit a rythm good enough to get me through it.  But now Lou is just mean!  I beat him first try on Medium but he's a tough nut to crack on Hard.  I'm dreading expert.

I'm tripping on Before I Forget, the chord transitions are a bit silly.  I've finished Cult of Personality on Quick Play on Expert so I know if I can finish Slipknot then it's off to the final tier.  I'm dreading One and Raining Blood.  I can finish Number of the Beast and Cliffs of Dover on Expert, so the other two is where I'll likely be stuck after that.


A lot of folks didn't like how hard GH3 is but for me, I'm glad it is more challenging.  I've been playing since the first one and not since my first time through have any Hard songs been challenging...until now.  That's kind of refreshing, to me.


I think the thing that's most jarring, and you pick up on this after spending a lot of time with the game, is that Neversoft seems to have approached the difficulty horizontally instead of vertically.  Like...in the other versions, difficulty from top to bottom within a particular difficulty was fairly uniform and progressed as such.

Now, you have to track difficulty of a particular song across difficulties.  It's obvious after playing Through the Fire and Flames on Medium even that it's playing in a whole different ballpark than other songs on that same level.  Ditto the harder songs like Raining Blood and One.  That's why people hit "brick walls", because you have to progress through the game vertically but they are increasing in difficulty proportionally to themselves.


I know that doesn't make an ounce of sense, but that's about the best way I can explain it.  Neversoft seems eager to cater to the fans during this period of time (with Rock Band breathing down their necks) so I'm sure the next one will work out the tweaks in the difficulty system.


Great game, though.  The master tracks are awesome, it's hard to go back to listening to the cover bands in the earlier versions.  It really makes a big difference.

Raining Blood was the last song I beat in that tier even though it's the first one listed. One was tough. I bombed at about 80% consistently. If I saved all my star power till that point I could get past the frist part of the ending solo. After that it's not too hard.

Raining Blood only has 2 chances for star power before the dreaded "mosh". Even if you get it it's not enough to carry you through that part if you miss too many. I ended just practicing that part repeatedly. Even so I was only hitting about 80% of it. It was good enough to get past the "mosh" and the rest of the song is pretty easy.

I've tried Lou about 5 times. I've managed to get off 2 attacks on him but that's all I've been able to get so far.

A bit late on this, but...

No, I haven't really played GH2 that much since the 80's edition and part 3 came out.  I should probably go back and give it another go.

And I'm STILL stuck on Raining Blood :P

I FINALLY beat Raining Blood.  I figured out a hand rythym that works well with mosh 1 now, so I could probably beat it again.  That doesn't mean that I'll be playing it again anytime soon.  Hearing the same song constantly over the course of a month tends to wear on you.

Ha!  I know exactly what you mean.  To this day I have little urge to listen to "No One Knows", and I use to really like that song.  GH3 almost spoiled me on Raining Blood, too. 

My first thought when I finished it--"I won't be back to this one for awhile."  So far, I was right.

So what is the hardest song of the four GH games? Jordan still?

I just watched a video of that song on Youtube. How the hell is that fun? Number one Dragnforce sucks ass number to to fail all the time and have to play the same song over and over and over. No thanks.

I just beat Raining Blood on Hard, and I though, 'well, maybe I'll get lucky on One". So I goto One.
And I play it. And I get to the outro. And I got a rist cramp. and I failed. And at 98 Fooking Percent.

I was at BEst Buy yesterday and took a crack at Dragonforce on hard... failed at 4%. I don't have it unlocked on mine because I skipped easy and medium and still haven't beat Lou on hard.

any tips on doing this? how many attacks does it take? I've only been able to manage 2.

^From what I remember, it took at least 3 (or 4) consecutive attacks on Medium.

There is no game on Earth that would make me not listen to Slayer. Raining Blood is too good a song. Thats why i will never play past medium.

but the game is rather dull till you get to hard. some of the songs on hard create some frustration and of course on expert there are a few that are maddeningly difficult but overall hard is difficult enough to pose a challenge but easy enough to have fun and beat without tearing your hair out.

I have played a few songs on Hard. I have passed a few and failed some. I don't find it fun. I dont want to play the same song over and over again. I don't have the patience for that. Also some songs just suck and other are good and dont want to ruin them.

I've been playing GH2 lately and FINALLY beat the 2 songs that have been a serious source of frustration on expert.

It's being reported that GH 4 is going to have "multiple instruments" in it (i.e. drum kit, microphone).

Damn! I'm hoping Activision is smart this time around and makes the game compatible with Rock Band's controllers.

I watched his vids. He's good yeah, but Guitar Hero isn't the hardest rhythm game out there.

O2Jam is technically harder. There are notes you have to hold while playing others, even with the same hand, it's really hard.
Just watch this video you'll see what I mean.

PS: I'm not trying to criticize Guitar Hero nor the guy who is so good at it and I'm not at all saying that I could do better. (Just to be clear ;))

I used my Edge card and got GH1 for $12.71 (I think they gave me 20% because I'm a regular).

Isn't it a free download? I used to play it on my mom's PC all the time, in fact, it's still there and playable. My char was lvl 30, I believe.

If you're into rythm games or want to try a free one it's quite fun and there's lots of free downloadable songs too. :)

As awesome as O2Jam is, it doesn't compare at all to Guitar Hero due to completely different controls. It would be like saying Mega Man is harder than skiing in real life on black diamond hills. It's too different to even compare.

I can't even complete Guitar Hero 3 on hard difficulty (let alone expert!) but I could have played that song back when I used to play O2Jam.

Ok, the controls are different, but they're in the same genre so I think it's allowed to compare them.

I was only pointing out that Guitar Hero isn't the holy grail of difficult rhythm games.

I think O2Jam is easy. Even that song you posted is nothing compared to even just hard difficult in Guitar Hero for me.

Pump it Up, in the arcades, is far more difficult  than either. It throws 4 and 5 arrows at you at the same time, and this is a game where you're using your feet to hit the buttons.

Really? Because what's hard about O2Jam is that you have to hold notes with a finger while playing (tapping) other notes with that same hand, without letting go of the long note. (Which is very frequent, as you can see in the video)

I totally agree with you about that, feet-rhythm games are definately more difficult than both GH and O2Jam.

I found O2Jam pretty easy because it's clearly a ripoff of Beatmania, which I used to play semi-regularly, and I had also had some piano training as a kid, and I'm ambidextrous.

Ah, well, that's an unfair advantage right there :P
