Title: What do you do to combat obesity?
Post by: TraderJake on January 25, 2006, 06:02:48 PM
If you are the education honchos in the State of West Virginia you have DDR installed at every school in the state. That's right DDR, or Dance Dance Revolution for those of you not in the know, is going to be placed in every school in West Virginia by 2009. It is going to cost $500,000 dollars, and Konami is going to foot $75,000 of it. The rest of the funding is going to come from Charitiable Organizations and private donors. So that means for potentially for a small price you could be a part of making gaming a member of the curriculum in West Virginia.

Personally, I find playing DDR a lot more enjoyable than jogging in frigid weather.

first.

Oh wait, this isn't fark? You mean I have to put something useful in here even though I was the first one to respond?  Damn.

Won't work.  Fat kids won't play it because people will laugh ad the jiggling fat.  This might be good for keeping the asians thin.

It'll be hilarious to see the obese have a go at that. I applaud this effort.

It's been this way in every gym class since the begining of time, except this time it's with video games.

Besides, I have seen a few huge dudes at the arcades that are almost as good as those quick little Asian kids.

How long before the machines are damaged/defaced?
I'm guessing half of them will be gone in the first school year.

If WV schools are anything like Detroit public schools (God I pray that they are not) they will last 3 weeks before they become property of the Crips.

I suck so bad at DDR. :-/  There's a pattern to it, but I most definitely don't know it.

Obesity, here I come (...?).

I wouldn't simply because i have absolutely no rythm at all.

I tried 1 time in an arcade with a bunch of friends and jumped off and let a more expeienced person finish off my round so my $.75 wasn;t completely wasted.

Then i playd it 1 time a couple months ago at Dans. His younger sister owns one of the PS2 ones and i sucked massively at it.

I find ddr to be one of the most degrading things a person can be seen doing in public, mostly because I suck at it.

But still, they think fat college kids are going to do it and lose weight?

I think they'd do better to invest in a lotta duct tape and just tape their fat mouths shut so they can't shovel in any more cheeseburgers. It would prolly be a lot cheaper than supplying DDR across campus and besides, who really wants to watch a flab-a-thon flinging sweat all over the place?

At the risk of insulting some people on the board...
People in WV go to college?!!?!?

Anyways, I thought this was just for grade/high schools.

If it helps kids lose weight I am all for it.

i can't see this lasting very long either. it would be a shame to see all these units go to the dump before they turn a year old. obesity is a big problem in america. then again if it helps our youth, then i agree with tynstar.

If it helps kids lose weight than it is all good but I don't see it lasting very long.

LOL .

Seriously though, what a waste of money.  School funds should be spent on good books and the salaries of good teachers.  The machines would be vandalized and probably cause a lot of problems with kids trying to skip class to play DDR.

This will not solve the obesity problems in the public school system... what it will do though is add to the product placement in schools where our tax money is going. Aren't children in school so they can get an education?   Nike? Pepsi? Coke? Adidas? Konami?  I see a trend.  I see these products  as a distraction to the education process.  If it isn't Coke, then it is Konami.  These things aren't just on soda machines, video games (now) and sports outfits, they are also in the books and part of the cirriculum that is taught to our students.

Adding DDR to our schools may seem like a good idea but it is just another way that the advertising industry is sneaking into childrens lives. The schools are just using obesity as a stepping stone so that parents and others see it as a "good" or the "correct" direction to fight this problem.

Education, parenting and educating parents on the harms that fatty sugars do to children is the ONLY way to help put a stop to obesity.  Fat kids won't loose weight because they play DDR, they will just be fat kids who play DDR.  What the schools need to show the children are the effects that this fatty sugars can have on you in the future.  You know, kind of like when they would call all the students into an auditorum and show them accidents by drunk drivers and all the gruesome images of disfigured people.  That would hit home with some people for sure and would probably be more effective.... in my humble opinion

I personally believe that restaurants should start cordoning off Fat sections. Smokers are disgusting and get their own section. Why not fat people?

And I'm only a little bit sorry to all the people I just pissed off.

I starve myself to combat obesity. I think you knew that though Trader Jake.
