Title: Media Play closeout: many $8.99 games
Post by: phoenix1967 on December 11, 2005, 10:28:59 AM
I was at a local Media Play the other day and they had a mess of Xbox and PS2 games marked down to $8.99.

I picked up Rallisport Challenge 2 for Xbox.

Media Play is going out of business so everything is 10% to 40% lowest marked price right now.  I stopped in at lunch but didn't have time for the line  :o  Here's what things are marked for now:

New games - 10% off
Used games - 20% off
Handhelds, TV Plug-n-Plays, gaming toys/figures - 20% off

There are some deals to be had, and more to come, I believe they will be closing the doors by the end of January.

That's big news! I'm glad I used up my gift cards.

I so damn happy, Media Play is closing, that place is a hell hole.

On a side note, I need to go to their store for closeouts.

That's one of the reasons I stopped in today, I have about $100 in giftcards.  You may still be able to use them at Sam Goodie or Suncoast, I should check into that.

I heard that around January/February is when the big deals should hit.  At that point they will be in full liquidation mode.

I just hope I have money left over after Christmas.

I strolled by there yesterday, and no price drops.  However I did manage to snag guides for Brute Force, P.N. 03 and Mace Griffin Bounty hunter for $1.50 a piece.  They were clearenced at 1.88 + an extra 20% off.

I didn't think about it at the time, but I may be able to get a decent accoustic guitar for under $100 with this sale.  Come on 40% off!!!!

I got the Brute Force guide too. I also picked up Serious Sam and Donkey Kong Country.

I'll be watching Media Play closely. I'd like to score some anime and Star Trek books as well as more games.

I stopped in today and the stuff is 30% to 50% off, and the new games are now at 20% off.  Things are starting to look pretty picked over but it's worth a look.

Yeah I was in there yesterday and all games were 40% off like he said.  Guess what though?  Many of them are still cheaper if you go elsewhere, even with the discount.   The only DS game that I saw that was cheaper at Media Play with the sale than you can get it elsewhere was Lunar.  Stuff like Polarium, Feel the Magic, Ridge Racer, etc. are all still marked at $35.  Take 40% off and it's still much cheaper to go to Toys R Us, Meijer, or even GameStop.  Even crap games like Ping Pals and Sprung were still somewhere in the $14 to $17 range after the 40% discount.  This is why Media Play is going out of business.

I heard they are being investigated for raising prices just for the going out of business sale!

I'll second that...their stores are some of the filthiest, nastiest, unorganized dumps I've ever seen, followed closely by On-Cue.

Unfortunately, since I've moved, there are no Media Plays anywhere close to me.

Well, I went to Media Play yesterday to get an acoustic guitar.  All of the good ones that they had left were floor models that were pretty beat up, so I just got one of the cheap Squire $100 packs.  Hey a cheap guitar is better than no guitar, right?  To bad my hands still hurt from playing hockey on Wednesday.

The entire store was completely picked over.  There were still plenty of games, but I have a feeling that once they go to 50% off and more, they will start flying off of the shelves.

I ended up waiting in line for a little over an hour to pay.  No big deal, I was expecting a long wait.  While I was waiting in line, I started feeling a little nostalgic.  The Media Play that I went to used to be where I picked up all of my CD's when I was a kid.  My friends and I would ride our bikes up to the mall that is directly across the street (which is another sad story as that mall is now closed down as well), but we would always stop at the Media Play to wander around there first, and every one of us would walk out with either a new CD or movie.  Ah, to be 14 again.

Sorry, there is no real point to this post.  Just a bunch of random thoughts running through my head.
