Title: On the job
Post by: 2D-Forever on July 07, 2004, 09:18:35 AM
So what do you guys do to pay the bills?

I used to teach martial arts, then I joined the Army of America.

I'm a corporate bitch for a home health care service.  My "official duties are handling the GPS systems for our fleet, accidents, and anything else involving the day-to-day operations of the fleet, but the big guys in the company have me do any menial tasks that they don't want to do.

I work one day a week for the Royal Mail, and do odd jobs as and when to get extra cash. We own our house, so no rent to pay, buy all our stuff second hand, buy cheap food from the market etc etc   I buy and sell junk too.

I'm pretty much a bum right now.  I work on this site a decent amount, but that's not paying for anything.  Heck, I lose money on it.  I may have to break down and work for my dad a little bit this summer, in landscaping, but I'm crossing my fingers that avoiding it will be an option.

I'm a "Junior Manager" or "Team Leader" working for IBM.  My group is kind of like a helpdesk (not callcentre), but we do all the server admin as well for the Government of Alberta.  Basically, IT support.  Can't afford to not be working and making a decent salary.  Not now - just bought a place :)

I take care of my family and in return I get to spend daddy's money. My mom is terminally ill and my grandma is losing her mind. My dad's an alchoholic and my bro just knocked his girlfriend up. Guess who's gonna end up babysitting?

I just sold advertising space on my bboard - got £120 for an a link/banner to run for 6months. It's not big bucks, but it does mean I don't lose money.........

Time to bring this back from the grave, because I just got me a new job.

I'm in software sales at Fry's Electonics.  Doesn't pay the bills (I haven't even been paid yet) but it's a start.

Stock manager for a janitorial supply company. I run the goods inwards and the stock side of things. Tedious to say the least.

Thinking of becoming a driving instructor in the new year.

I an Assistant Vice President for M&T Bank, but I don't know anything about banking.  I'm a hand-on manager of a small development and technical support group.  It pays the bills and gives me some nice freedoms, like the ability to take an extended lunch everyonce in a while to visit thrifts that are further away.

Been selling janitorial supplies and sometimes doing actual cleaning and strip & wax floors for five years. Not what I want to do forever, but it's the family business so here I am for now.

Lets see when this first came up i believe i was landscaping for my mother and painting for my uncle. I may have also been working at Carpetland who also laid me off due to lack of work and regular guys recovering. Booo revcovery.

About 2 months ago i quit painting with my uncle.
Started painting for my father.
Got laid off last week because we had finished the job and i started college.
And now i am unemployed and preparing to sell my lifes work (aka collection) on eBay to pay off my car payments/insurance.

On the plus side i will hopefully find out on friday if i will finally score the job i have been trying to get at Game Crazy.
Otherwise i have to fill out a ton more job apps again :-/

I could always try falling back on Salvators (italian resturant) but then i lose my weekend nights.

I still have nightmares from my one and only real job interview.

My other interviews have been along the lines of:

"Do you want a job?"
"Mmmk"
"You're hired!"

My current jobs are in a community centre for people with mental health problems. On Thursdays I work in the kitchen, preparing meals. I like that job because it's behind the scenes and there isn't much pressure. It's also a small team, so we get along well together. That is at adult minimum wage (Over 21s), £5.05/hr

At the weekends the community centre is open as a cafe/restaurant. I work as supervising manager, making sure people do their jobs, working the till, bossing people around, preparing drinks, and telling people what to do. That job is ok but it's out in the open, where I serve demanding customers. The way the place is run as a business is embarrassing at times, and we, on the front, have to bear the brunt of customers not happy with it. It has its perks, like the people who know us by name. But I'm a perfectionist, which means if something isn't completely right I feel like it's a complete failure. So if one person isn't happy with something it ruins my whole day and I focus on that one problem. It's also demoralising when we take stupidly low amounts of money.

My wages went from £5.50/hr to £6/hr last week because of my promotion, and in October our wages are going up by 50p, so I'll be on £6.50/hr.

If we weren't a charity the weekend cafe would have been closed a long time ago. I want to quit that job but it wouldn't look good on my CV if I said I quit a few weeks after being put in charge. That, and it's also more money than I'd make anywhere else at my age.

i am a clerk at the local board of elections.  obviously, weve been slammed the past couple of months in the build up to the 2006 november election.  ive been working 60+ hours a week, but all the OT will help me pay down the girlfriends credit card and get a jump start in saving up for our wedding next year
