Title: RFGen 2025 SNES Challenge
Post by: koola6 on January 01, 2025, 06:27:05 PM
PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

SHORTCUTS:
SNES1: Games list
SNES2: Community-decided victory conditions
SNES3: Completed games list
SNES4: Claimed games list
SNES5: Community goals!

This is obviously stylized after the NES2019 challenge from oh-so long ago. The rules are mostly the same, but we're coming at this six years later with some members dropped, more intensive work situations, and oh hey, we get to experience the magic of a 16-bit console!

Rules to participate:

These are almost exactly the same as the NES2019 challenge, and are mostly copy-pasted.

- Be a member of the RFGeneration.com forum
- Have hardware available to play SNES games. Emulated versions of SNES games (such as Nintendo Switch Online) are acceptable as long as you avoid Save States, Cheat Codes, Mods, Hacks or any other method that would alter the original intent of the game
- Must post of a picture or video of your accomplishments when you finish a game or achieve a highscore
- Unless you’re posting videos of your plays this is on the honor system so please don’t cheat your way through any titles or get someone else to complete a game for you or any other method that would corrupt the integrity of this community challenge.
- Standard Controllers encouraged for most games, but any controller you are comfortable with is acceptable. Super Scope, Miracle Piano, etc. are all usable for their respective titles. Please don't use extra features that many non-standard controllers may provide such as Turbo Buttons or Slow Mode.
- Outside resources such as guides, maps, walkthroughs, tips n tricks books, having a second person helping the player solve puzzles, etc are all acceptable. Try to play each game as it was intended to be experienced at first, but a little extra help every now and then is totally cool
- Codes are not acceptable unless they are taught to the player either within the game or the materials that came packed with the game. For example the Konami code or continue code in Ikari Warriors are restricted, but the continue code for Adventure Island or Solomon’s Key are acceptable since they are taught to the player in the game manual and pack-in poster respectively (I'm honestly not familiar enough with the SNES to have an equivalent.  :'( )
- As saving became bigger in this era of gaming, I feel that I must add a rule about saving: All in-game forms of saving are okay, just no save states.
- High scores, passwords, etc. must be posted here (although you can also post it elsewhere also if you want) Part of the goal of this is to increase interest in the forums.
- Yes, John, Star Fox 2 is included in the game list.

This is a community effort to tackle the SNES library and as such the spirit of this challenge is to encourage each other to participate and succeed. This is not a competition so please freely share tips and advice for challenging games or sections of games. Players are encouraged to share passwords if they want to break up long tedious games or need someone else to tackle a particularly challenging section. As long as all players involved are member of the RFGeneration forums this is an acceptable, and encouraged, way to finish a game. All members will have their usernames noted next to any games they have completed as a record of their participation.

Multicarts don't count as individual games, although they can be used to finish the original games if you so desire. I am currently undecided about games like Super Mario All-Stars; let's come to a consensus in the comments.

(This is a paraphrase of this rule from NES2019:
If you are unsure as to what is required to consider a certain game to be “finished” please check the post below for clarification. Games that have multiple releases will only be counted once. For example just because there is a cartridge for Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt and World Class Track Meet/Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt the Duck Hunt game only needs to be beaten once on any of these carts to qualify.)

Claiming rules: Claiming starts on the 12th. You are only allowed to claim one game at a time, just as it was in NES2019.

Not required, but a short synopsis of your time with each game would be greatly appreciated. Did you have fun with it? What where the biggest challenges to finishing the game? Do you intend to try more games of the genre/publisher/year? Would you revisit it later or recommend it to another player? How does it compare to other similar games you’ve played?

None of this is set in stone and I'm open to community discussions.

Let’s all play some SNES, talk about SNES games and have fun!!!

Happy 2025, everybody, and let's get this ball rolling. Let's get people interested in RFGen again! I'm planning on ordering a capture card for my real hardware SNES to stream gameplay and while I save up for it and wait for it to arrive, I'll be emulating the games.

This looks great. I'm excited to play through some snes games this year! I already have a few in my collection I was hoping to get through, this will keep me motivated.

Yep, thread looks great and this sounds like a fun idea! I probably won't be as active as I was with the NES challenge but I might try to knock out a few here and there.

Yeah! I'm glad I was able to start this. Hopefully the forums should be more active about this, and I hope everybody enjoys.

Hype! SNES is one of the consoles who i am least familiar with, so this will be a good excuse to try a bunch of stuff I haven't.

I know things haven't officially kicked off, but I've been itching to play through some of the RPGs on my shelf.  About half way through King Arthur & the Knights of Justice already

Title: Re: RFGen 2025 SNES Challenge
Post by: Misto on January 06, 2025, 05:00:27 PM
As listed above, I did finish Long Arthur & the Knights of Justice.  The game was interesting and had some good ideas but was so poorly executed. You have to hit specific checkpoints for passwords to be usable but it resets all your items too. You need those items to use character skills which are required for most bosses. So you have to just grind away item pickups.  It's also very glitchy and possible to softlock yourself out of victory. Tried to post a victory picture but it's not working for me 🙃

Anyway going to start War 3010 next, it's been sitting on my shelf for years

Nice! One game down, 716 to go. Glad you... enjoyed (?) your time with the game...? I'm not sure if the whole "it was really interesting and good ideas" was enough to sell you on the game to where you enjoyed it. Nonetheless, progress! It was fun seeing you talk about it, and got me wanting to try the game, too.

I enjoyed it until it became frustrating lol.  I would recommend a guide though if you try it

SNES is in my top 3 favorite consoles, and I enjoy any excuse to play one.  With my current responsibilities I'm not sure when I'll have time to contribute, but I'm very familiar with the library so I intend to squeeze some in sometime. :)

I want to go ahead and claim Earthbound since I believe it's the only major SNES RPG I haven't played and this is the perfect excuse to finally play it. Looking forward to it!

Finished WWF RAW today! Super fun WWF game, the controls have their issues but once you practice and get used to the nuance of performing grappling moves, it becomes a lot easier. I would say except for the reverse chokehold; grappling is one of the major moves the computer uses. So, getting good at the Grapple contests is important. But it doesn't take long as long as your D-pad isn't stiff.  The game has a great roster of stars that I watched when I was younger. The game has super special finishers, but I wasn't able to pull them off, at least for the people I used. I was able to use characters finishers at least for the ones I played. Good game, and plenty of replay value. The Royal Rumble was especially fun.

Here is a pic from one of my tournament wins, but I wasn't sure on the win conditions so I went through all the tournament modes as well and the Royal Rumble

Finished up last night (Played on Retroid Pocket 3+, cause it was a bit easier at the moment to actually put time into).

I haven't gone through it for quite a long time and forgot what a slog that last boss gauntlet can be. I really enjoy the overhead sections, and while the action sections feel "stiff", its consistently stiff such that it makes the game feel reliable.

Overall I've probably played the best game on the SNES and all the other picks i make will be downhill from now on lol.

Same as me.  I love the action and sim parts of Actraiser 1.  Actraiser 2 only has the action parts, which make it not as good.

Completed War 3010 today.  It plays like a simplified Advance Wars strategy game.  Its a little basic and clunky but once you get the hang of it, its pretty fun.  The one thing that was tough to get a handle on was there was sometimes a "hidden" objective that made levels way easier, but sometimes you needed to find and do these or the level would basically be impossible due to the enemy having so many more units than you do.  Also the ending was anticlimactic, you got two lines of text before being kicked back to the opening menu, not even credits were shown.

I think I'm going to do Goof Troop next.

Awesome! I have never even heard of the game til you claimed it. Now, I am very curious about this one.

Its actually a sequel to War 2410 which is supposed to have similar gameplay.  Apparently the devs made these two games at the end of the SNES' life and just disappeared.  Its a shame, I think with some more resources they could've made some good strategy titles.

Going to grab Ys III next.

Your 1992 Super Bowl Champions, the Minnesota Vikings!!!   Some notable plays from the Super Bowl.  The generic QB Vikings ran for a first down on 3rd and 12 and got it.  He was injured on the play immediately.  Miami attempted a NFL record 68 yard field goal and came up short.  And Dan Marino was sacked in the endzone for a safety with 2 min left in the game.  Always had fun with this game, but good luck with the kicking.  It almost seems random if you make any kick or not.

Ended up playing through Operation Logic Bomb on a whim while browsing the NSO's SNES catalog. I always passed over this one because I thought it was some weird puzzle game based on the title, but it turns out it's actually a pretty fun overhead shooter. Pretty short and probably could have used a bit more time in the oven, but I quite enjoyed it overall. Not too terribly difficult, except the final boss can make short work of you unless you know the trick for defeating him. Glad I played it, I'm thinking I might try to seek out some more lesser known titles like this!

I also remembered that I have a Super Scope and would love to try to knock some of those out if I can get a CRT hooked up sometime soon. I have two that are both tucked away right now, haha. Despite its bad reputation, I had a Super Scope as a kid and really enjoyed using it.

Completed Ys III today. Imgur kept failing to upload my image so it's only on discord.

I enjoyed for the most part but still had some jank common to late 80s/early 90 action rpgs. The collision detection was a bit rough especially with the final boss. Being slightly off while attacking can count as a hit against you and take massive amounts of hp away.  I do prefer the style of the other Ys games over the side scrolling style but still worth a play.

I'll thinking I'll try Major Title next (Irem Skins Game in the US). I imagine the completion condition will be to win the tournament mode

I think I might need to put Major Title on hold for now.  I played through the tournament probably 50ish times already but the AI has some serious rubber banding.
No matter how good your doing, it seems around the 2/3rds mark one of the bots will jump ahead a few strokes. The best I've done is 2nd with -10.

Finished Kirby's Dream Land 3 last night.

I want preface a few things before I share my thoughts. I love Kirby games. I collect Kirby games. I speedrun (poorly) Kirby's Adventure. I have beaten almost all of them.

I HATED this game.

KDL3 is a beautiful game, with an amazing soundtrack and some really unique ideas, that all fails to be a fun game because of how god-awful it is to control. I was playing on original hardware and needed to fire up emulation to check and make sure nothing was wrong. The game felt sluggish in the best of times, and almost unresponsive at others. Gooey is a poorly executed idea in 1P and i almost never used him, and most of the animal friends were worthless (shoutouts to Kine for ALWAYS being good and ChuChu + broom being broken enough to just mulch boss health bars). The special objectives for each level are neat, but sometimes way too easy to mess up, or otherwise too obtuse to know how to complete without having to go through levels multiple times. I did not get 100% completion, and I am absolutely not going back. Copy abilities are also nerfed hard, especially fireball, as they have "anti-spam" features built in that just make the experience unfun.

This is really the only Kirby game that I think needs a remake - clean up movement, reduce lag, tweak some of the goals and it could be a great experience. As of now, its poor at best.

Wanted an easy one last night so I crushed out Math Blaster.

I have WAY too much experience with the Genesis release, so it was interesting to see all the changes and adjustments. I can, without hesitation, say that the Genesis version is the way to go in every single respect.

Some of the weirder changes for the SNES version include:

  • Having your weapon frozen between rounds
  • A jetpack physics change that makes it difficult to hover
  • No sound effect when enemy space ships are attacking you
  • A full screen reset in between rounds of the UFO level
  • Having to wait for all trash to leave the bounds of the screen before moving between phases

The nicest thing i can say about it is that it makes me appreciate that I grew up with the Genesis version and not this.

Also at some point I'll make a video about what we've done so far in January for the RFGen YouTube channel (which if you didn't know exists @rfgeneration on YouTube.) I'm hoping to do this for every month. Beat Young Merlin. I played through this shortly after it came out, and remembered that it felt like a King's Quest game specifically for a console. This time through, I thought it was like a King's Quest game in the slightly obtuse puzzles. The minecart segments are not really all that fun, but otherwise I think this is a decent title to play.

If you ever want to feel like your SNES is actively dying the whole time you play a game, go put in WWF Wrestlemania the Arcade Game.

This is clearly one of those cases where the SNES got a slapdash port by people who didnt care. Its missing 25% of the roster, and a bunch of sounds, music, and voice lines.

Anyone wanna pick my next game so i don't get junk?

First playthrough of Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse. I was in one of the section 4 levels and died by wind gusts in the same spot a couple times, and I thought "that feels like a dirty Capcom trick". Once the credits rolled, I received my confirmation that it's a Capcom game. They're usually not to my liking, but this one has enough continues and the difficulty is dialed back a bit compared to Mega Man games.

B.O.B. is D.O.N.E. The last set of levels in this game are ridiculous. There are speeder bike-style levels where your biggest enemy is the time limit, and the last one has so many dead ends you have to memorize which of the passages to take at each intersection just to get to the end in time.

If anyone wants to sample the last levels, use my password 775092 to start near the end.

Finally got a weekend to sit down and play some games!
Final Fight is Finally finished. I played and beat this game so many times as a kid, mostly the arcade cabinet at our local pizza hut tho. It was fun to revisit the snes version. It took quite a few attempts to get thru this one again. Few strange things, they changed the one bosses name from Sodom, to Katana in this one. And they changed the character poison, to a guy name Sid. I still love this game, it brings back great memories.

Stone Protectors finished, this was an odd game, it had some great ideas (every single button on the controller is a different move, unlike most beat em ups that just have an attack and jump button) but the controls were so stiff, and just the normal punch button did massive damage to the enemies. I managed to get thru the first 4 levels without even taking any damage, and by then I had so many 1up extra lives, that the rest of the game became pretty easy. The elevator level and the 'suckerpunch' boss were the hardest parts for me.

Going to take final fight 2 next

Beat Final Fight 2 last night. In this one you are beating up people from around the world now, not just in Metro City (wheres Russell Crowe and ole Tugga) it was fun, typical beat em up, the bosses were pretty unmemorable except for Rolent which kicked my butt the first attempt. The final boss was pretty easy but a slog, his life bar just didnt want to go down in the beginning now matter how much i wailed on em.

Going to claim Cutthroat Island next(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250212/907c91d0a3b6c62e090ebe9382facebf.jpg)

Finished up Cutthroat Island last night, and managed not to stomp the cart to bits or light it on fire or throw it in the garbage. I played this game for far far far too long, it felt like torture, raging most Of the time. The platforming sections are horrid and cheap, the fighting is bland and uninspired,  and certain enemies are rage inducingly cheap. Level 2 i just
walked around for far too long not knowing you are supposed to walk into parts of the background scene. Its sad to say i needed a walkthru for parts of this one. I can 100% say i will never play this one again!

Sure. Most of the time, I don't know what I'll play next, and I figured if someone else finished it before I posted it, I wouldn't be bothered. I've been checking the list before I start a game to see if it's been claimed.

Beat E.V.O. this morning. Normally when I play through I evolve into a human before I finish it, but this time I just finished it as the maxed out rhino body.

I'll claim Cool Spot next. I've played that a little bit before, and I think it's a decent enough platformer that it won't cause me to throw a controller.

Beat Cool Spot. Pretty fun platformer for a licensed title. The minimum requirements for completing a level feel pretty easy to accomplish, and the amount of 1ups you get far exceeds the number you need in a playthrough. Fun for a relatively short game.

Just wanted to give an update on Earthbound since it'll likely be a while before I finish it. I just beat the boss in Happy Happy Village. I don't love the game so far, but I'm still hoping it will grow on me more, especially after I gain some other party members. There's an interesting mix of QOL features that make the game feel ahead of its time while also having some frustrating elements that hold it back for me. I feel pretty mixed about the overly quirky tone of the game, but it is what it is. It's interesting to see the influence the game takes from the Dragon Quest series and the obvious influence it had on Undertale and seeing that Earthbound was really the missing link between those two games.

Gonna keep plugging away, but it's not the primary game I'm playing right now, so progress has been fairly slow. Still hopeful that it will sink its hooks in me at some point, but we'll see.

I was playing Super Mario RPG. Got to Bowser's castle near the end. When I reset the console all the save data on the cart was gone 😭.  I don't have it in me to restart from the beginning so it's up for grabs again.

I do want to claim super adventure island 2 next though.

Captain America and the Avengers is done, half beat em up, half shmup, i think i remember playing this in the arcades, but dont remember it  being like this, everytime you hit and enemy they become invisible for a few seconds so there are no combos or anything like that. Fighters History has been defeated. Beat once and got a strange ending screen, so had to look it up, had to bump up the difficulty to get an ending. So i beat it a second time with Ray. Was pretty easy overall with him, i just spammed “gundameye?” And “base tornado?” A lot. I liked how there were 2 bosses. The first boss is just a literal clown called clown. First time i played i was thinking, you have to be kidding me, a clown as the final boss? But the final boss is Karnov (from the other video game?)
I think i played this a few times when i was a kid at the arcades, but dont believe i ever played the snes version. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250304/aec328b348fff6233d2b0f9372449256.jpg)
First time i beat it, didnt realize i needed to bump up difficulty to get an ending.

Saturday Night Slam Masters completed. This game was awesome! So much fun, and just the right amount of difficulty. Beat everyone and got the belt, then I noticed the screen and markers changed color so I made my way thru all of the opponents a second time (thankfully you are still allowed to lose and use a continue and not lose ur belt) and got a “true” ending i guess? Either way i highly  recommend this one! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250306/248807c01099866c1f66b401166e3fb6.jpg)

Finally finished Earthbound! I had kind of a love/hate relationship with it, but I quite enjoyed it overall. There's a lot of annoying and frustrating things about this game, but there's a lot of interesting and innovative things also so I always felt compelled to come back to it, and it's just so bizarre so it's never boring, haha. I'm really glad to finally play through this one after all this time, and I'm really curious to check out Mother 3 sometime to see if they ironed out some of the issues I had with this one.

Here's another one down, Time Slip. This one was really hard and a bit clunky but a enjoyable run n gun. Although the last level is frustrating with the amount of stuff on screen making it hard to see enemies. I've been playing this one on and off for awhile and finally was able to finish it.

Beat Contra III on easy mode. Does that count? The end alludes to there being more to the game if you play on normal mode. I didn't see anything mentioned about win conditions for this one, but if we want to only count normal difficulty, I'll try it again.
