Title: Far Cry: Instincts for Xbox.
Post by: phoenix1967 on September 16, 2005, 04:44:34 AM
This one looks very promising. I tried out the demo (tough!) and have been following it on various websites.

Per the demo video it also looks to have offline 4-player splitscreen capability, online multiplayer, and a SWEET map editor.

Anyone watching this one?

I havent read much about it, but the graphics have me hooked. They look xbox360 worthy! Also which months XB magazine was the demo in?

The newest one. It also has demos for the new Brothers in Arms game, Indigo Prophecy, and maybe a couple of others.

The more I see of it, the more impressive it looks and sounds. This could end up being a sleeper hit.

Had a bunch of guys over on Friday night to try out multiplayer and discovered that this game is really good! The predator power up is especially fun to take advantage of in a multiplayer setting.

My only complaint is that the vehicles seem a little difficult to maneuver. Maybe it's because they stay in 1st person when you're in them, which may just take some time to get used to.

And even though I'm not throught the story mode, from all that I've seen so far I definitely recommend this one for purchase.

agreed. it was a blast in multi-player. I only tried a vehicle once and it did seem a little awkward. the other thing I couldn't quite figure out was how to set the booby traps.

I really liked the Solarium map. especially the part where I climbed up into the water tower with the sniper rifle.

A few words on the map editor feature.

After downloading a few of the player-created maps off of xbox live I decided to delve into creating one of my own. After about 15 mins of  trial and error, I found the feature to be very user-friendly and with the ability to jump in and out of the map in 1st person mode, it puts this feature over the top.

I watched a video on gametrailers.com of a player that actually took the time to duplicate the halo 2 maps in FarCry format. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find those maps online to be able to download them. Which brings up the only real drawback...that player-created maps can only be downloaded if you choose to participate in a multiplayer game hosted by the map maker.

Overall, though, this feature is a lot of fun, and can be very addictive when you get into it after awhile. I've got some tweaking to do on the map I've created (at this time it's too big for a 4-player game), but when it's done I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

did you include a sniping perch for me? I'm getting this game tomorrow from a friend at work. I want to make a map before the next Halo night we have.

NO SNIPING PERCH FOR YOU!!!

In fact, I'm making the map with no sniper rifles and no shotguns...and the Predator power ups are in a creative place.

I just finished creating my 3rd map last night. 2 of them have sniping locations...but you've got to earn the rifle because I made sure they weren't too close to the towers.

I finally got Far Cry and have been messing with the map editor. it is the coolest feature I've seen yet in a game. maybe it's just because this game is always on the menu when we get together for some split screen mayhem but having the ability to create our own battlefields is awesome.

so far I've only done one map but have a few ideas for more. and mine DOES have a sniper tower, 3 in fact.

I went into the Xbox dashboard and the map I created shows as a save file that can be copied so it looks like you can tranfer them from box to box via a memory card.

very cool feature.

I know I'm stating the obvious here, but it gives the game infinite multiplayer replay value. Too bad Halo 2 didn't have a map editor. :(

They're supposed to be coming out with a Far Cry expansion game in March, at $29.99. I'm looking forward to see if that one measures up to the original.

last night I got a chance to test out 5 Far Cry maps I created with the guys. what a blast! also played on 4 or 5 that Phoenix created. they all seemed to play quite well and spurred some ideas for a few more. it was like a whole new game. I am totally hooked on this feature.

are they any other 4 player games that have map editors?

timesplitters: future perfect has a map editor. From what I remember, it's nowhere near as detailed or user-friendly as the Far Cry: Instincts editor.

@NESJunkie: my tag is the same, phoenix1967.

Yup. I'll bring it on Friday!

I don't know if they fixed the system link issue. I'll read up on it.

I just started playing this yesterday. Is it my Xbox or is the laod time really really long? Almost makes the game unplayable. I actually switch over to watch TV while the next level is loaded.

Everytime you turn it on?

I remember being able to skip it. Accidentally did when I wanted to watch it.

So far every time I turn it on. I really want to like this game but it is having some serious problems.

The glitch that happens is that when you play different games in between FC:I sessions, it loses the cache that tells the game that you've already seen the initial 5-10min.trailer.

If you go on XBL, I think they have a patch for it to allow you to press a button & skip it. If it's not there, you may want to check teamxbox.com for an FAQ.

I only had to watch the opening scene till I had a save file for campaign. Having multiplayer profiles or custom maps didn't let you skip it.

As for load times... I don't recall them being particularly long. Give it a chance, I've beat the campaign on both Far Cry's and loved them both.

I have a campaign save file. I thought the same thing as you. I was wondering if I needed to save the game and not just the auto save but I didnt see any save option.

I am giving it a chance. It is pretty cool once I can finally play. I think I am on the forth of fifth level.

From what I played of it on Xbox, I remember that you cannot save mid-mission. So at the end of a mission, try pausing and see if the option to save comes up.

I forgot to mention that when I logged into live there was a LIve update done. After the update the Xbox restarted. I still couldn't skip the intro. When I was done playing I turned off teh Xbox. I went back to play later and I COULD SKIP THE INTRO!!!!!!!!!!! Also the load time between levels seemed shorter as well. I am happy.

Good deal. Yeah, that right, it wasn't a formal patch, just one of those live auto-update things where you really don't know what it's doing until later.

Excellent. Enjoy the rest of the game. Now I'm going have to play the campaign...;)
