Title: Help with Prototype device
Post by: Crazy_Opossum on September 23, 2020, 10:37:32 PM
Hey All,

I recently received a prototype Coleco ADAM Expansion. I have been searching for a while and have found very little info about it and I was wondering if anyone can help me or point me in the direction of someone who can help m dump the EPROM on it. Photos Posted below.

That's pretty awesome! When you mentioned it on the Discord, I didn't have a sense for what it was, and thought it was a ROM cart for a prototype game. I didn't realize it was an actual hardware expansion. Based on the DB connector, it seems like maybe this would be something that could turn a stock ColecoVision console into an ADAM-compatible unit, and that port would be where you could plug in a breakout for a keyboard, and possibly other peripherals. That's purely speculation on my part, but it's cool to think about the possibilities.

Here ya go (attached), don't worry .. no flash was used and the tape was replaced immediately after photo.

Based on what I read about it, it's a tape simulator meant for transferring the super games to test on a colecovision. I may be misinterpreting what I read so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt

After looking at it and the stickers on the inside... It raises a few questions ... The dates on the device 2/14/1985 being the one that threw me off the most, why would they be developing hardware for a product they discontinued for over a month at that time? Maybe it was developed earlier? Maybe the other date of 7/23 (no year) was when it was assembled?? Interesting to think about.

This is a MC68701 (A MC6800 family mcu with a UV EPROM part).
https://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/115575/MOTOROLA/MC68701.html
I'm currently looking if someone knows or have the tools to dump this.

In the mean time best to cover up that sticker back and dont expose it to UV.
Might be bitrotted already for all we know.

Update: I reached out and I may be getting help from AtariAge. I was told someone needed to be emailed and they would get back to me I will let you know when I get a response.

Final Update: This is not a prototype device, but an in-house testing device for the ADAM off the line.

The tape sim eprom probably contains something to test the tape device. I learned that the ADAM had it's tape drive changed twice, so I can see why something would be made to test that.

Neat! Cool to see that stuff like this is still around, and that there are knowledgeable folks who can help identify these oddities. Probably not much utility in it these days, but it's a nice piece, regardless.
