Title: Den's Record Thread - How many records did Den or NES_Rules buy today?
Post by: den68 on August 25, 2005, 07:58:37 AM
when I was out riding my bike this morning I spotted a huge box of records that someone put out with the trash. it was dark so I figured I'd take a closer look. I enede up hauling the whole load home, about 100 albums. all are in decent shape. some of the bands include: Queen, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, the Doors, Rolling Stones and Clapton.

all free! woo hoo!

not sure what you mean.

It just seems a bit random for a Bill Cosby album to be mixed in with all those rock albums and such.  Then again, taking another look at that list, it's all pretty random.

yeah, with the exception of the 3 comedy albums (Dangerfield and Carlin were the other) South Pacific and a few blues albums it was all rock.

the funny thing is I got all those in one stop. between Saturday and today I went to 4 thrift shops, flipped through about 1000 records and only found 2 rock albums. one by Cheap Trick and one by Jethro Tull. if I see anymore Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond or the Firestone Christmas Collection I'll puke.

This made me laugh.  It's exactly the reason I often pass by records in thrifts nowadays.

it's a drag flipping through all those but once in a while there's something good tucked in amongst them.

I'll flip through them every few stops. not all though.

Title: Re: did a little trash picking
Post by: Sauza12 on August 31, 2005, 05:23:40 AM
I used to look through the tapes at thrift stores, but I didn't find a single tape that I wanted.  The thrifts that I go to seem to have way more records than tapes.  If I thought I could find a decent record player and a good number of good records I would look through them.

I got my turntable about 20 years ago when I got the component stereo I still use today. I added a single disc CD player in the early 90's and a multi disc CD player in the late 90's. It still works like a charm. Sure it's a relic by today's standards but it sounds good and serves me well.

I've still been checking the records every time I stop at a thrift and while the rock albums are very short in supply I have found at least one each time out.

a few of the latest:

John Mayall - (I don't recall the title)
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Yes - Yessongs
Sammy Hagar - 3 Lock Box

all priced between 50 and 99 cents.

I'll have to go thru the records I've bought at thrifts/yard sales.  I know I've picked up some good ones for under a buck each.
I do know the following:
Bruce Springsteen "Tunnel of Love" new/sealed $.49
"The Concert for Bangladesh" complete $.25
The Doors "The Doors" & "Hotel Morrison" for $.50 each

I've also picked up several Styx, Toto, Iron Butterfly, Beatles, AC/DC, Megadeth.
I got the Metallica "Garage Inc" set, new on vinyl, for $10 when it first came out - very interesting to find new releases on vinyl...

Post by: den68 on November 02, 2005, 08:38:12 AM
I'd like to get the Concert for Bangladesh. didn't that recently get released on CD?

I've yet to find any Ramones on vinyl. someday... maybe.

the Beatles don't turn up often, though I have most of those from when I was a kid and I recently aquired several from a cousin who passed away.

I just saw a stack of Beatles albums last week at a thrift, but they were in the showcase and marked $20 each.  I have no clue if they are worth that or not!

yeah that seems high. I know records are obsolete but how many bazillion did the Beatles sell? they can't be rare.

there's a small thrift/antique shop in my town that was selling Abbey Road and Let It Be for $20 each too.

I passed on those and picked up Queen - Live Killers for $2.

somehow I doubt those are the one's that will turn up in the thrifts. it's the beat up musty smelling copies of Sgt Pepper's they are trying to get $20 for.

and I heard factory sealed is not a good thing for records. the shrink wrap will continue to shrink over the years and warp the record.

Reading this thread is dangerous for me...I used to have hundreds of records and loved going out and finding all kinds of stuff, usually for about 50 cents each...a relatively cheap hobby, but very addicitve.

You've gotten alot of nice records there den...makes me want to start that hobby back up again, but my wife would kill me.  There's a nice store in a large city nearby, and they have aisles and aisles of 45s, LPs/EPs, 78s and even the really old Edison cylinders...and nothing is over $2...I see ALOT of really old Jazz and Blues on the 78s...I gotta stop thinking about it!

ooh, sounds like I need to take a drive to Kentucky. I've yet to find any Ramones or Rush records, might be the place to get them. It's been fun searching through the record bins while out thrift hunting. it's hit or miss finding video games but I can almost always find at least one record and I don't like to come home from my searches empty handed.

my wife has given me the "oh no. not another collection" speech but hasn't killed me just yet.

I had a nice classical music score last night. I found 8 volumes of something called The Beethoven Bicentennial Collection. Each volume comes in a vinyl covered box that slips into a cover box and contains 5 LP's and a booklet detailing the pieces included in the volume. The records on the Deutche Grammophon label. The copyright date in the booklet is 1972.

they were in great shape and complete save one booklet. the best part is they were only $1.99 each. I found them at a Salvation Army.

the volumes I got were:

Vol I - Symphonies & Overtures - Part One
Vol II - Symphonies & Overtures - Part Two
Vol V -Music for the Stage
Vol VII - String Quartets - Part One
Vol VIII - Music for Piano - Part One
Vol IX - Chamber Music
Vol X - Music for Violin & Cello
Vol XVI - Piano Quartets & Wind Music

I have this one, got it with a milk crate full of lp's I bought in front of Bookman's a few years ago.  The store didn't want them and the woman that had them needed help reloading them, and lots of other crap, into her van.  I asked how much.  She said $1!
I also got several Doors records, some Steppenwolf, some Kansas and Styx also.  My best lp score!
When my dad was out here last year we fired up my record player and listened to the Bangladesh lp's.  Good times...

who is Robbie Williams? me and a guy at work are both music buffs and often discuss bands like Yes, Rush, ELP and Clapton. there is this other guy that is constantly telling us that Robbie Williams has sold more albums than all of them. neither of us has ever heard of the guy.

If I say that this Williams guy is from a boyband such as Backstreet Boys or Westlife you dont want to hear his sound I suppose!
But lets quit talking bout that noise and try to focus on the real deal, know what I am saying?

Maybe we can open a section on the RF Gen thats into music or something?

Don't worry about the price, I've paid krazy amounts for video games...as I'm sure we all have. lol

I've seen that LP a couple times. once it was just a very tattered sleeve, the second the LP was there but mangled and neither had the comic.

what's the story on that? isn't there an Atari game that goes with it too?

Well, I doubt it. On Atari Age there was a discussion on this album a few years back and they were 99% sure it didn't come with a game, but there is always that chance. I personally don't think it did, it's just a kool thing to collect. I consider it a atari collectable. this is the link for the R10 Music Machine  http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=321

I've been lurking here for weeks, and naturally the first thread that I post in is......

I looked through a flea market guy's "garbage records" (which means 1 small scratch or the jacket is a little beat up, boo hoo) and picked up 30 albums for 10 bucks. Some Kool & The Gang, Jacksons, common crap to fill holes in the collection.

The best one is the Sesame Street album My Name Is Roosevelt Franklin. The funkiest kid's record this side of the Electric Company.

Also got a bunch of really nice 45's at 3 for $1:

The Jimmy Castor Bunch - Troglodyte/I Promise To Remember (HOLY CRAP)
Sam & Dave - Wrap It Up/I Thank You (original Stax!)
The Delfonics - Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)/I Gave To You (reissue, who cares)
Kool And The Gang - Jungle Boogie/North, East, South, West
Bill Cosby - Ursalena/Hooray For The Salvation Army Band! (I have the album, it's a personal favorite)
Hugo Montenegro - The Good, The Bad And The Ugly/For A Few Dollars More (woo!)
The Isley Brothers - Between The Sheets (I love it when you call me big poppa)
Funkadelic - One Nation Under A Groove (WOO)
T. Rex - Bang A Gong (Get It On)/Raw Ramp
Steely Dan - Black Cow/Josie (to go with my 2 copies of the album, geez)
Rush - Spirit Of The Radio/Circumstances

Generally I look for nearly anything with a groove to it. R&B, Soul, Jazz, Fusion, Funk, Reggae, Calypso, Disco, Latin, Rap, etc.

But there's also a buncha Rock records I'm looking for, some Country (a la my avatar), Kids stuff, 60's/70's Electronic stuff, Sinatra, way too much different stuff. I need to work on putting a have list online (it'd be smaller than the want list)

With that in mind, here is Sunday's flea market visit:

45's
Booker T. & The MG's - Soul Limbo/Heads Or Tails
Booker T. & The MG's - Hang 'Em High/Over Easy
Booker T. & The MG's - Hip-Hug-Her/Summertime
Teresa Brewer - Dern Ya (Dang Me)/Mama Never Told Me
James Brown - Soul Power
James Brown - I'm A Greedy Man
Clarence Carter - Strokin'/Love Me With Feeling
Les Cooper And The Soul Rockers - Dig Yourself/Wiggle Wobble
The Fat Boys - Wipeout!/Crushin'
Joe Hinton - You Gotta Have Love/Funny
Ernie K-Doe - Mother-In-Law/Wanted: $10,000.00 Reward
The Meters - Hey Pocky-a-Way/Africa
Willie Mitchell - Sticks And Stones/Mercy
Jimmy Smith - By The Time I Get To Phoenix/Groove Drops
Jimmy Smith - Cat In The Tree
Jimmy Smith - Mickey Mouse/T-Bone Steak
Jimmy Smith - Any Number Can Win/What'd I Say
Jody Watley - Friends (feat. Rakim)/Private Life

LPs
Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior
The O'Jays - Ship Ahoy
The Brothers Johnson - Right On Time
Gato Barbieri & Lonnie Liston Smith - Bolivia
The Hello People s/t
Zamfir s/t (featuring "The Lonely Shepherd" which Kill Bill fans will recognize)

Ooooohh, I could be convinced!  The Styx albums are 1980 reissues, FYI.  Great 80s haul in that last post BTW!

yeah I was pretty pleased with that last find. all were in great shape too. I listened to the Eddie Murphy album on Sunday. I hadn't heard that in years.

"Hey Norton, why don't you come over here and..."

so what kind of convincing will it take?

yeah it's a nice surprise when the posters or any other extras are still intact. I've found about 10 albums that still had posters in the sleeve.off the top of my head I remember Styx - Grand Illusion, Beah Boys - Endless Summer, Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall, Beatles - The White Album and I don't remember what albums but I got posters for Journey and Grand Funk.

I found a Paul Mc Cartney album and one by David Bowie that had stickers with them.

They are! That's what I love about the flea market....there's 1 guy here that is extremely picky about records, meaning if they have even the slightest imperfection, 1 tiny scratch, slight ring wear, DJ timing strip, cutout, etc. he tosses them into the cheap stuff crates. I have been reaping the benefits of this since May.

nice! if you want Cosby LP's I see those all the time. I know I could get you a few of those.

I look for the Bill Cosby Sings ones more than the stand-up. I do need copies of "Bill Cosby Is A Very Funny Fellow...RIGHT!" and "To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With", but other than that, not looking for too many. Richard Pryor on the other hand.........

I got some good records at Goodwill today, I don't usually bother looking, because I don't have a record player or any other records, but today I went through about 5 milk crates of records.  They were only 49 cents so I couldn't pass 'em up.
Triumph- Rock and Roll Machine
Dire Straits
Super Tramp- Famous last words
Styx- Corner stone
Journey- Frontier
Jackson Browne- Hold Out
REO Speedwagon- hi infidelity

But when I checked out, it was 50% off day or something so it was like $1.80 something for all of them.  Now I just need to find a cheap record player.

I finall got a record player, its an old one with an 8 track, cassette player and AM/FM Tuner.  Its in sad shape now, but looks like it was a nice one when it was new.

I also got some more records, Queen- "The Game" and "A night at the opera" for 50 cents.  Also got Eagles- "The long run" and Styx- "The grand illusion".  For 50 cents each.

I can't wait to listen to it.  I cleaned up the record player and it looks great, but I need a new needle and some speakers.

didn't you once mention you needed a turntable? that Kenwood is trade bait. I'd really like to keep it as a backup but I honestly have nowhere to put it.

I've also nabbed another batch of 80's goodies I haven't listed yet. I'll post em once I get them cleaned up.

Came away with a motherload of a record haul at the local small-town auction.  I bid blind (not knowing what records were in the cardboard boxes) and I did so-so.  Ended up paying nearly less than a penny per record.  Most albums aren't in the greatest shape, but I'm having fun going through them.  I won't list all the boring Goodyear Theatre Christmas Specials and other assorted crap, but here's a sampling of the good stuff:

Albums

Carole King - Rhymes & Reasons
Carole King - Thoroughbred
Kool & the Gang - Something Special
Kool & the Gang - Celebrate!
Barry White - Can't Get Enough
Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story
Butterfield Blues Band - East/West
Paul Simon - Paul Simon
Climax Blues Band - Flying the Flag
Temptations - Reunion
Gladys Knight & the Pips - Imagination
Rick Springfield - Living in Oz
Rick Springfield - Working Class Dog
Kris Kristofferson - Surreal Thing
Raheem - The Vigilante
Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, Steve Stills: Super Session
Al Green - Soul Survivor
Roger - Unlimited!

Oddball Albums (Just a Small Sampling)

A Clockwork Orange: Music from the Movie
Stars On - Stars On Long Play
Donnie & Marie - Goin' Coconuts
Kendalls - Heaven's Just a Sin Away (Autographed)
Christmas with Colonel Sanders
How to Strip for Your Husband (Missing Instruction Booklet :'()

Also well over 200 45's and 100 78's...my God, I don't even know where to start looking :speechless:.  Once I sort through these things, I'll try to post some of the good finds.

I got a new record player today.  It was at a church flea market and it looked really nice, almost new looking.  It was $5 and I was going to just buy it, but we ran into a lady that we know (and was working there) and she said we could try it out first, so she brought over a power strip and plugged it in.  Nothing, it would not turn on at all.  So I ended up getting it for free.  After I took it home, I left for work, but while I was gone, the lady stopped by our house and gave my dad the speakers to it because nobody bought them.  So even if I can't get the record player to work, I at least got some speakers.

One of these days I WILL listen to those records I bought.

Got these for $.49 at Goodwill
Rod Stewart "Blondes Have More Fun" & "Foot Loose & Fancy Free"
Eddie Money  "Life For The Taking"
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band "Stranger in Town"
Also got "State of Shock" Ted Nugent becuase it was loose and "accidentally" slipped into the cover of another record ::)

I also have a few questions for you guys;
Is there anyway to remove permanent marker from the record case? Normally it wouldn't bother me, but one has a big "49 cents" written on Bob Seger's forehead.

Also, where can I buy a new stylus?  I finally got that free record player to work, many frustrating hours and a few shocks, but the needle is pretty bad and all the records sound bad. If it helps, the number is EPS-41ST.

Best Buy has this one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=6899181&st=stylus&type=product&id=1096380173993

if that won't work I'm sure you could find an answer here: http://www.recordcollectorsguild.org/

as for the marker. I doubt there's much you can do. album sleeves have all kind of different paper, coatings and textures and they all react differently. I've used Goo Gone to get stickers off with success on some and rubbed the color off on others. You'd need something more potent for markers. I guess you need to decide whether shredded paper looks better than marker. tough call.

I've got several sleeves with peoples names written on them and have just left them alone. On the plus side "Stranger In Town" is not all that tough to come buy. I've seen it many times.

Got these from Goodwill for 49 cents each:
Motley Crue: Theatre of Pain
AC/DC: Pyromania
REO Speedwagon: Good Trouble, High InFedelity.
Styx: Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone, The Grand Illusion
Michael Stanley Band: Greatest Hits
Boston: Boston
Jethro Tull: Benefit
Pat Benatar: In The Heat of The Night, Crimes of Passion
Foreigner: 4, Agent Provocateur
Loverboy: Keep it Up
Eagles: Hotel California, Their Greatest Hits
Electric Light Orchestra: Discovery
Eddie Money: Life For The Taking
Bruce Springsteen: Born in the USA.

BTW, I'm going to sell Born in the USA, Life For The Taking, Cornerstone, The Grand Illusion, and High InFedelity to a guy at the flea market, because I already have them.  What do you think a fair price would be for them?  Could I at least make my $10 back?

Title: Re: Den's Record Thread - LOVE that VINYL baby!
Post by: den68 on March 28, 2007, 09:13:57 AM
heck yeah. while most thrift stores sell records for $.50 - $1.00 I wouldn't flinch at paying $2 apiece if they are in decent shape.

You got some nice ones there. Discovery is a great album, so is Benefit. Nice score on the Crue too, I've yet to find any of their albums.

AC/DC: Pyromania??? isn't that Def Leppard?

Title: Re: Den's Record Thread - LOVE that VINYL baby!

My mistake.  It was Def Leppard.   I also got Flick of the Switch by AC/DC.

Thanks for the price check, if he tries to rip me off, I'll sell them to you, if you want them.

Today, at the same location I got some more.  Less records, but 2 of the best artists ever.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash- Crosby, Stills, and Nash
Eddie Money- Eddie Money
And now, 2 of the greatest albums of all time:
Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon
Led Zeppelin- IV
Just out of curiosity, what do you think those last 2 are worth?

Title: Re: Den's Record Thread - LOVE that VINYL baby!

I really don't know the value for records. My collecting is confined to thrifts, fleas and garage sales.

here's a place you could get a good answer though: http://www.recordcollectorsguild.org/

I've got the 4 you're selling but if you want to sell Theatre of Pain or Flick of The Switch I'm interested.

mt latest:

John Cougar - American Fool
Blackfoot - Strikes
Bad Company - Straight Shooter
Christine McVie - Christine McVie
ELO - Ole ELO
Bruce Hornsby & The Range - Scenes From The Southside
Bus Boys - Minimum Wage Rock N Roll

here's an odd one:

Denny McClain - At The Organ, The Detroit Tigers Superstar Swings With Today's Hits

McClain was on the 68 Tigers World Series team. While lately he's more famous for his troubles with the law he once was a 30 game winner. The sleeve has him on the mound in uniform. A pretty unique record plus a nice piece of Tigers memorabilia.

lastly:

a Matthew Sweet promo picture disk.

I tried that site, but they ave way too many boards, I got so confused.  I posted in "Tell me about "Price Guides" and the value of my records."  but it must have been deleted because I can't find my message now.
Someone did say they were worth only about $1 each.

I'm keeping Theatre of Pain an Flick of The Switch, but you probably wouldn't want them anyway.  They look like they were sitting in water for the past few years, the sleeves are all rotted away on the bottom half, the vinyl is still god though, so it doesn't bother me.

I stay away from sleeves that are water damaged unless it's minor. I've passed on many really great albums I wanted because the sleevs were trashed. I've also seen the reverse many times, immaculate sleeves and vinyl that looks like it was used for home plate.

nice grab!

There's a Sesame Street Disco at the Goodwill I go to, but it's different from the one you got.  It's been there for at least 4 months, so it must not be worth much.

Hey cool, I didn't even know there was a record topic at this forum. I've been buying records for a few years, but my collection's pretty small. I've only got about 70 or so. I'm not really that interested in cheesy 70s rock, so I don't really find that many records I want to buy. Here are some of my recent purchaces

Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music
Buddy Holly - 20 Golden Hits
Devo - Smooth Noodle Maps
McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman - McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman

It's Devo's last album from 1990. It's not one of their finer moments, but it's still alright. Definately only recommended for hardcore fans. The most well known song from it is Post Post-Modern Man. Actually, that's about the only one that's known at all.

I almost passed them up, the guy usually has crap but I spotted a Heart album in the front of one the boxes (there were probably 300 records there) and they had a sign that said 3 for $1 so I figured I'd get Heart and find 2 other decent ones, but I just kept finding great ones. Finally I had 42 in total and I knew he wouldn't want to (and probably couldn't) count that high so I offered $10 for the whole thing

I'd say I probably have around 100 as well. The only valuable stuff I have is some older Of Montreal stuff (when they were still good). Everything else is mostly classic singer songwriters (Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, etc) and newer bands I like (Decemberists, Shins, American Analog Set, Ozma, etc), with some classics mixed in (few Beatles albums, Pink Floyd - Dark Side,  Michael Jackson - Thriller, etc).

Haven't posted in here in a while.
George Carlin-Occupation: Foole  25 cents

Boston- 3rd stage
Genesis- abacab
The Beatles- 1962-1966
The Beatles- 1967-1970
The Beatles- Abbey Road
The Beatles- Let It Be
Rick Springfield- Working Class Dog
Paul McCartney- Tug Of War
Wings- Back to the Egg
Wings- London Town
All for $3.  The Beatles' album covers are in pretty sad shape, but the vinyl looks good, and for that price I couldn't pass them up.

David Bowie- David Live
Wings- Band on the Run
Dennis Yost and the Classics IV
David Bowie- Low
The Music Man Soundtrack
Gary Puckett & The Union Gap's greatest hits
David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust
Pink Floyd- A nice Pair
CCR- Chroncile: the 20 greatest hits
Dave Clark Five- Chaquita/In your heart
Steppenwolf- Gold Their great hits
The best of Herman's hermits
David Bowie- Hunky Dory
John Lennon- Double Fantasy
John Lennon- Mind Games
Frank Sinatra- all the way
Left End- Spoiled rotten
Allman Brothers band- The road goes on forever
David Bowie- Changesonebowie
David Bowie- Young Americans
Emerson Lake & Palmer- Trilogy
As I was listing them just now was the first time I really looked at them
I just glanced through them at the garage sale and asked what she wanted for them all.  She told me to make an offer, so I went as low as I could- $1.  She said $2, I agreed.  Anyway, as I was going through them just now, I found a post-it note with "Albums: $1 each" written on it.

I also finally got a working record player ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
It was in a free pile at the garage sale right before the last one with all those records. It's got a good needle in it but the belt's making some weird noises, so I'll have to open it up and see if I can fix it.  Plus it had Steve Miller- Fly Like an Eagle in it.

Duran Duran - Duran Duran
Jefferson Airplane - After Bathing At Baxters
Beach Boys - California Girls/ All Summer Long - Double Play
Beach Boys - Spirit Of America

Well, I gave up on trying to fix that last record player, turns out there is no belt inside, but a rubber wheel.  The wheel had a couple chunks missing from it, so that's why it was making noise.  But, the good news is that I got another player today.  And this one actually works perfect.  It has a good needle (diamond too), an 8 track player, and cassette player.  Plus it came with two really nice Panasonic speakers and about 60 8-track tapes.  About 40 are crap that I'm trying to sell, but the rest are pretty good.  Highlights being Beatles and Bob Segar.  Best part is, that is was only $5 for everything. ;D ;D

That's what I was figuring, but there's a few albums out there that look like some "graffitied" them but are supposed to be like that, so I'm not really sure.  Plus, like I said before, it looks like paint, but it doesn't feel like paint.

Stevie Wonder - Fufillingness' First Finale (Just about as good as I thought it was going to be!)

These are all records I've been looking for for a while. It should be fun.

I got this group of records yesterday (7/7/07) at a garage sale whose address was 777 :o
Supertramp- Even in the quietest moments
Supertramp- Crime of the Century
Joe Walsh- But, Seriously folks
Jethro Tull- Songs from the Wood
Jethro Tull- Heavy Horses
Steely Dan- Countdown to ecstasy
Steely Dan- Can't buy A Thrill
Steely Dan- Katy Lied
Steely Dan- Pretzel Logic
Steve Miller Band- Brave New World
E.L.O.- Out of the Blue
E.L.O.- A New world Record
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer- Works
Emerson, Lake, and Palmer- Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
Jim Croce- Photographs and Memories
History- America's Greatest Hits
Jackson Browne- Running On Empty
Cheap Trick- Heaven Tonight
Billy Joel- Turnstiles
Billy Joel- An Innocent Man
E.L.O.- Olé ELO
The box was marked $1 each, and I don't usually even bother looking if they're marked that high (my max is $0.50 per album) but I decided to skim through and I found a bunch I wanted, so I figured I'd get a bunch and make an offer.  So I picked about half the box and offered $10, they accepted.

I also picked up "20 Heavy Hits" from Goodwill last week for $0.50.   Almost all the bands on there, I've never even heard of before.  WTF is Strawberry Alarm Clock or 1910 Fruitgum Company?

I'll take a wild guess and say the Strawberry Alarm Clock song was "Incense and Peppermints". 1910 Fruitgum Company though I know the name I couldn't name a song.

what other bands are on there? Blue Cheer, Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs, Norman Greenbaum, Iron Butterfly?

Not bad this weekend. I couldn't remember if I had some of these and I hate paying full price (50 cents) for an album I already have and some I didn't recognize the band, so I made an offer on the whole box.  $5 for everything:
Best Of The Doobies
Kansas- Masque
Beach Boys- Endless Summer
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band- Uncle Charlie and his dog teddy (I know I've heard the name of the band before, but I don't recognize any of there songs, but it looks like a Lynyrd Skynyrd type band, so I can't wait to listen to some of it.)
Linda Rondstat- Simple Dreams
Eagles- Hotel California
Elton John- Madman Across The Water
Richard Pryor- Live On The SUnset Strip
Fleetwood Mac- Rumours
- Fleetwood Mac
BTO- Not Fragile

Just a few from a garage sale this morning.
Elton John- Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player
Phil Collins- Hello, I Must Be Going
Yes- 90125
Got all 3 for $0.25

A guy at the flea market had a tub of records that were moldy and heavily damaged corners.  But I skimmed through and found a few decent ones including The Beatles' Rubber Soul. So I asked how much for a record, and he said "only $5" I laughed in his face and walked away.

well Beatles albums don't come cheap. $5 was probably not too bad depending on condition.

It was in pretty sad shape, the jacket was almost completely covered in a fine mold and was barely readable and the vinyl was pretty scratched up too.

that sucks. that should only happen to Barry Manilow albums... not the damn Beatles.

Not much this weekend.
But I got a couple free 45's
Kool & the Gang- If you feel like dancin'/Ladies Night
Hall & Oates- Diddy Doo Wop/You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

Also got Deep Purple's Machine Head (no jacket) for a quarter.  It was kind of funny because it was mixed in with a bunch of classical, christmas, and religious music.

I listened to that Badfinger record, and I don't recognize the songs, but it has a good sound to it.  Very similar to The Beatles' sound.

And I forgot to mention that a few of the records had Jukebox tags with them, so I think the guy that owned them used to have Jukeboxes.

Payed $0.50 each for:

Billy Joel- Modern Woman/ sleeping with the TV on
Heart- Shellshock/ These Dreams

The other day at Goodwill I was looking through the records and found The Who's Happy Jack. I was ecstatic until I realized there was no record inside the jacket :'(  I searched through the pile of loose records, but couldn't find it.

Mud Slide Slim is a great record. I listened to that a lot in college. Check out the song "Sweet Baby James." Can Stevens is also one of my favorite artists, and both of that albums you got are great. Tea for the Tillerman is particularly tremendous.

Finally got a chance to start adding those records to my database, but I noticed something strange.
The album I listed as "The Best of the British Blues featuring Eric Clapton and John Mayall" was normal until I turned it over, which is listed as " The Best of the Humble Pie".  Now as I'm posting this I notice some of the label is in German.  British Blues says "Seite 4" which I'm assuming means side 4.  Humble Pie is "Seite 3"
I can't figure out how this ended up in America and I want to know what was on sides 1 &2.

Being a bit of a classic guy myself, I have been watching this thread for a little while.  For your viewing pleasure I have attached a unique album prototype for a classic release by the group Genesis.  This was never used nor developed past this first stage of the cover art.  Yes - this is the hand painted original.

It was funny, my dad and I were driving down the road when he says "hey, there was some records in that pile of garbage".  So I slammed on the brakes, and then backed up to the pile.  Skimmed through the boxes, liked what I saw, and took them.

 Love the title change

Unfortunately, I won't be buying many records in the next few months as garage sales and flea markets are coming to an end, and I'm trying to get a good bit of my collection converted over before I buy many more.  Hopefully I'll be done by spring.

Good finds too, I love George Carlin.

Simon and Garfunkel - Bookends

I've been looking for this album for a while. I almost got it on cd, but instead found it at the Salvation Army for 50 cents! It's very good. Really short but it stays with me a long time after listening to it.

Stopped by Goodwill during my break, and actually bought something from them for the first time in months.  It appears they purged what was an extensive collection of worthless records and Atari games.  Only a few records left and no Atari games.  But some new ones seemed to have come in since then.  I picked up these:
Journey - Departure
Heart - Dreamboat Annie
Pat Benatar - Live From Earth
Supertramp - Paris
Dave Mason - Certified Live.  I never heard of him, but bought it because he looked like a good rocker.  Turns out, I really enjoy the music.  He was in Traffic and a few other bands. There's also a couple Eagles and Jimi Hendrix covers on the album.

In other news, the woman that rang me up said that they quit writing the price on the records. ;D  I hated when they wrote a big "49" on them when they were sitting right in front of a sign that says "records: 49 cents."

I definitely will, my current method has acceptable sound quality, but it takes so long to get the sound levels perfect.  I have to set the volume on the turntable, then on the receiver and then the microphone for the computer. If it's not just right, the songs are too quiet or get distorted.

I wonder if any cars ever came with a record player built in?

I use the speakers output to microphone input at 45 rpm for everything. Then, using Audacity, I slow the speed down to 33 1/3. Check out Audacity, its a great audio editing software, and its free!

Title: Re: Den's Record Thread - How many records did Den or NES_Rules buy today?
Post by: NES_Rules on December 26, 2007, 09:33:10 PM
I do use Audacity, and love it. I had the trial version of Goldwave and it is an amazing program but it's not worth it to buy.  The only thing it has that Audacity doesn't is a really good click/pop remover, but I find it's not too bad removing them by hand.
I've thought about recording at 45rpm and then slowing it down, but I figured it would lose quality. Plus, I like to listen to the record as it records.

I did get a USB turntable for Xmas, and it does work nicely.  It's a cheaper model, but it sounds just as good if not better than my old one.  It comes with a program that is really simple to use, but you can't do any editing in it.It just records it, you break it up into tracks, and then it puts it into your iTunes. For the "advanced" users who want to edit, it also has Audacity with it.
I'm not sure why yet, but I can't get Audacity to record the audio through the USB cable, so I recorded Dave Mason's "Certified Live" using my old method and it did come out better sounding than with my old turntable.
While I connected my new turntable, I changed my whole audio set up. I may put up some pictures of it.

Since Den asked for it.

so where are the pics of the record collection?

The records, all in alphabetical order:

The main part of the setup, my new Ion USB turntable, with an awesome receiver and speakers I got at a garage sale for $10.

My old turntable that I use for 8-tracks and playing records because the USB one isn't really loud.

And some more speakers. When I did this I realized Ethernet cable makes for awesome speaker cable.

that's beautiful man! the sad thing is that a couple of those albums in your pictures (38 Special - Special Forces & Pat Benetar - Live From Earth) I bought when they came out.

so you collect 8-Tracks too? That format has not aged as well as vinyl. Much like my cassettes many of the few 8-Tracks I have are unplayable.

Title: Re: Den's Record Thread - How many records did Den or NES_Rules buy today?
Post by: NES_Rules on January 09, 2008, 12:41:37 PM
I'm sure those aren't the only ones, everything in my collection is some form of Rock.

I don't collect 8-tracks as actively, the majority of the ones I have are my dad's old ones. I also got a bunch when I bought that older record player, about 1/3 of which I kept. Whenever I find them in range of free - $0.25 I buy them. I've got around 50 of them at the moment.
I've got a few of them that the ribbon broke, but the majority are good, I really should copy them before they do rot.
I actually prefer them to cassettes because of the way they are split up into tracks, it makes them so much easier to listen to the song you want to. As you can see in that one pic, I don't have many cassettes (and the majority of those are blank recordable tapes) because I despise the format so much.

Goodwill got some new records for the first time in months, not much good stuff though. All I got was;
Blue Oyster Cult - Fire of Unknown Origin
$1,000,000 Music Match-Up: A Limited Edition Album from 7UP and CBS. There's a wide variety on it, from Willie Nelson to Journey to The Jacksons.

Goodwill got a bunch of new records in, mostly country, there was a lot of Willie Nelson and Hank Williams, but I didn't buy any of them. I did manage to pick out a few more my style.
Pete Townshend - Chinese Eyes $0.50
Genesis - A Trick of the Trail $0.50
Steely Dan - Aja $0.50
Crosby, Stills, and Nash- Replay $0.50
Jackson Browne - Late For the Sky $0.50
Jackson Browne - For Everyman $0.50
The Kinks - Give the people what they want $0.50
Jackson Browne - Lives in the Balance $0.50
Allman Brothers Band - At Fillmore East $1. More than what I like to pay for a record, but I think that one is worth it.
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Live Alive $1

They had a Beatles' Hard Day Night for $4 in the display case at the register but it was in pretty sad shape, so I passed on it. Hopefully they noticed that a record collector passed on it and will mark it down, so I grab it for cheap.

I don't even see the point in buying something like that. What the hell do you do with? Put it in a huge warehouse and go "oooh"? And then you own nearly everything, so you have nothing to go hunting for.

a good chunk of it is probably stuff I wouldn't even want.

and the no need to hunt anymore factor is a huge reason not to buy it. the hunt is main reason I collect anything.

Definitely. I only collect Rock, and sure, I could sell off everything that I don't want, but that would be SO much work.
And the seller says it would make a good museum. I don't really think it would, mass amounts of records just don't look that amazing on shelves.

It would be for a museum.  I would never really care to have all that but it sure would be neat. Thats a lot of history. Lots of stuff that will never be redone on to a new format.

I was flipping through a box of records that I've been trying to sell, all junk that I've picked up with the good stuff. Or so I thought it was all junk. For some reason, I never listened to the Ozark Mountain Daredevils album, but I did today, and it was pretty good, I'll definitely be keeping it. It's a southern sounding band similar to Skynyrd but slightly less Rock. They have a pretty unique sound and I'll definitely be looking for more of their records in the future.

Last week, I picked up about 30 classic rock records from our neighbor's yard sale. Total price: free!! A lot of them are in quite good condition, but a few are in 'I will not put that on my turntable!' shape. Even a couple of beatles records. I'll edit this with a complete list in a little while... :D

Very nice haul today, they're not in the best condition, but it all looks playable.
For $4:
Rush - 2112
The Who -who are you
cars - candy-o
Led Zeppelin - III (That's got to be one of the sweetest covers, ever!)
The tubes - T.R.A.S.H. (Never heard of 'em before)
Kansas - two for the show
Elton John - Blue Moves
Sweet - desolation boulevard
George Carlin - take offs and put ons
journey - infinity
Foghat - night shift
Nazareth - hair of the dog
queen - jazz
foghat - Live
Styx - II
the greatest of the guess who
queen - greatest hits
doobie bros - the captain and me
foghat - energized
foghat - stone blue

He had a couple hundred more, but I left them because I had most of them and the others were in just too bad of shape.

Also, I got this really nice record player for free.
My mom was looking for one for her work for a project, so she asked everyone in the office if they had one. So someone gave her this one, I'm keeping it and I'll give my mom another (cheap) one that I have.
She also had a bunch of records that she was going to give me because "no one wants this stuff these days" until some idiot told her she could sell them on eBay. So it looks like they'll be going to eBay. Hopefully, she'll decide it's not worth the trouble and give (or sell cheaply) them to me instead.

All the records listed and the one thing that interests me is the record player.  Then again, having a small collection of clasical music, I've already got stuff I'd want to listen to.  Just need to get lucky and find someone selling something to play it on.

I have. I just ran out of room for it and I don't even have the space to set up the player properly so I just quit buying them. I'll probably go through and sell off a lot of stuff that I've already recorded, stuff I have on CD and stuff I'll never listen to.

Anyone have any suggestions on selling records if you don't have a record player to test them? I was considering getting into vinyl for awhile and found some first print punk records from California thrift stores. Stuff like China White, DI, The Dickies, and The Business. I since decided I'd rather not start another collection, but I feel like going to a record store I'd probably just get ripped off.

I'm going to guess a record shop in California isn't going to leave much room for profit.
But, records generally don't need to be tested, just looking at them is enough for mos buyers. Generally, if the defect is going to cause a skip, you can see it.
