Title: Gaming Challenges*ADDED POLL*
Post by: Izret101 on August 08, 2005, 12:42:07 PM
Got a kick ass time beating a game?
Got a insanely high score?
Think your unstopable?
Post your best scores/times here and dare others to beat you!

Alright so just some general ground rules to keep things somewhat realistic and people not geting 10 billion points or beating a game in 15 minutes would be any sort of proof.

A pic is the easiest form of proof. Even if it isn't within everyones realm of possibility but it would definately make it easier for people to admit defeat to one of their hiscores.

Oh yea and no cheats. Whether they be button presses or GameShark or Action Replay.
I would like this to be based on peoples real skill and not how good they are at entering cheats.

O yea and BTW this isn't limited to just classic/arcade games.
Anything that has a score will work and any games that record the time to beat will work.
There is really no way to prove you beat a level on Halo 2 unless you record the entire thing which would be totally out of the question for some people (including myself).

Well thats about it for now... I hope to see people participate it would be nice to see some competition on here :)

I will speed race any of you through a couple levels of Donkey Kong Country 2 :)

I could probably give someone a good run for their money speedrunning through Sonic, but I'd have to learn the game again :P

I am going to have to speed run that again too and take a pic.
I was down to between 19 and 21 seconds on the first level.
:P

Good choice Tynstar!  I might give that one a go sometime :)

Awesome! If you beat my score ( you won't) I will beat yours.

Oh yeah, and I defy anyone to beat me on Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo on anything.  I can beat the computer (MAME) on hardest dip setting and 'hard' mode in-game with 1 credit.

Oh well... first attempt.

I have a feeling this challenge rather hinges on how good you are at controlling a boss while taking on as many infinitely respawning trash minions as possible :P

Maybe if I used another life as well!

It might not be fair to do it on an emulator. The conditions are different.

Title: Re: Gaming Challenges
Post by: Sureshot on August 10, 2005, 02:02:43 PM
If he wants to use one too, then it's fine by me :P

But yeah I understand exactly what you're saying, the same way TwinGalaxies won't allow them for record attempts.

Title: Re: Gaming Challenges
Post by: Izret101 on August 10, 2005, 02:39:37 PM
It is unfair to do them on an emulator for a multitude of reasons. I was on the fence about asking for people not to use them.
But i don't think anyone here is that pathetic of a person that they would rewind or use any other of the massively unfair advantages some emus have.

To me it just seems sad that someone would bother to lie about something like this.

So as it stands emulation is accepted but may be more scrutinize. Especially if someone is overly protective of their record.

I don't mind leaving it to those who have the proper stuff, perhaps we should see what everyone else thinks about it.

Sonic the Hedgehog best times
I only took a picture so far of my best time on the first level. And it seems i made a liar out of myself. The absolute best possible time ANYONE could get would be 28 seconds. Maybe 27 with an impossibly/inhumane flawless run.
So anyways here i am at 29 seconds |D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/izret101/DSC00850.jpg)
And here i am @ 30seconds
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v479/izret101/DSC00847.jpg

I got a 29 second run on Act 2 but i hit spikes so that means i can get 2-3 seconds better :)
Eh only 1 second better but good enough for now.

I don't think anyone here is pathetic enough to cheat to get a high score.  So I say emulators away!

I will be posting a score for Galaga soon.  Thou shalt kneel before it.

I was also thinking about Galaga today, I'll definitely have a go at that one as well (if the poll goes the right way!)

I can't get a highscore on Galaga. That game puts me to sleep. I could do a Ms Pac Man score.

what system? i have the genesis, 2600, 7800 and both versions for the nes. i don't think i am very good at ms. pac-man, but am willing to compete to see how i stand amongst you all. :)

also on galaga 7800, very easy. i rolled the score over a while back and wish i had taken a pic of it. |D

Actually I have the coin op. I was going to use that. I played it last night for teh first time in a month or so and got 190k. My best score is 230k.

You could use MAME I guess.

I've never played Galaga on the 7800.  Is it really that much easier?  I was just going to play it on one of my Namco collection discs.  It's the closest I'm going to get to the arcade expirience without leaving the house.

I'll post a Ms. Pac-man score too, but I have a hunch that your scorle could be up to 7x higher than mine.  I suck at Pac-man games but i can't stop playing them.  :)

I would have to try and get a Ms. Pac-man rom for MAME then.
O yeah for peopel who don't have MAME on their PC (i know i don't) you can give this a try http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=48

Settings - Free guy at 10k and I think I have a fast version of the game.

WOW! thanks for the suggestion. i spent a few hours searching for a mame emu and ms. pac-man rom and i finally figured out how to use the program. is there a way to hook up a usb controller? i am having difficulties, but as of now i am getting up to par. i hope to bring a nice score to the table.

by the way, how do you take a snap shot of the game? is there a certain way like nesten(i believe it is) or do you have to use the handy ol dig camera? thank you for any help.

PrtScn key -> copy into MSPaint does the job for me, if you're talking about emulator shots :)

Oh and they could do with updating that Wolfmame on the site, MAME is on 0.99 now!

Your new target :)

There's actually a very cheap way to earn more points in this game, albeit slightly risky, and that's losing a life when the boss you're fighting has 1 punch left of health, then kill them immediately when you return.  This resets the timer to 99 and you get much more time bonus score at the end.

The other thing I did this time is go into the Mr-X battle with 4 lives, took on trash mobs for 3 of them and then used the method above to gain my beefy time bonus.

Just some tips for those attempting this one :P

Oh and I managed to get hold of Ms. Pacman with the speedhack as Tynstar has.  It's damn fun even though I suck at the games, so I might submit something for that in the future!

Ok, I have another little challenge to throw into the mix, and a game that many of you may never have heard before if you aren't from the British Isles.  Go to http://www.stairwaytohell.com, get yourself a BBC emulator and try and get your highest possible score on the legendary Chuckie Egg (also found there).

Here's what it looks like (not my screenshot):

I'll post a score when I sit down and play it again next :)

Edit: Found a screenshot of a game I had a little while ago (I believe I died very shortly after with nothing more scored):

Enjoy!

Here's a pretty tame Galaga score that I'm sure will be beaten.  Note, I'm using Galaga rev. B, just a bugfixed original (I believe), which does NOT have rapidfire and you can only use ONE button to fire, rather than some versions that allow 2 (for instance, in the Namco Classics Collection Vol. 1).

http://sureshot.sulphuricacid.co.uk/galaga.jpg (in URL form as it's a large image).

EDIT: I actually just got about 1000 more, but not worth posting it really.

And SPF2T for those who want to try it :)

Remember, you have to use the 'Hardest' difficulty setting in the dipswitch options (get there by pressing F2 I think) 'Fastest' game speed (although I think that may be default anyway) and 'Hard' when it asks you what mode you want when you begin playing. Everything else is default (Matches are 1 round, etc.) and you can only use ONE credit as your score will accumilate rather than resetting if you die.

I think we have more than a few games to keep everyone occupied at the moment :P
