Title: Man Bites Dog
Post by: Lord Nepenthean on August 04, 2005, 08:55:53 PM
Oh geez this movie is soooooooooooooo good.  You all need to see it, right away.

It is a film out of Belgium from 1992 that is shot as a low-budget documentary about a serial killer.  Things are interesting from the start, but you REALLY get sucked into the movie when the camera crew start to develop a relationship with the killer and they are no longer simply impartial observers.  The film is so great because there are an infinite number of layers to everything that is going on, and it is beautifully shot as well.  You won't be able to take your eyes off the film because you won't be able to help thinking that it could be real.

Criterion presents.  Props go to Scott (Tynstar) for suggesting this one to me.  I can't believe how good it is.

10/10, easily.  I'd definitely put it in my top 20 at least, and I've seen a lot of movies in my short life.

What a coincidence.  I had a friend who bought this movie about a week ago because he heard about it in an interview with Rob Zombie about The Devil's Rejects.  Apparently, Zombie was asked a question about whether or not The Devil's Rejects was glorifying violence, and he said something like "No, if you want to see glorifying violence, watch THE FORBIDDEN MOVIE or Man Bites Dog."  This friend of mine had already seen THE FORBIDDEN MOVIE and liked it, so he had to see Man Bites Dog.  Either way, I'll have to watch this movie since it's come up two times in the past week.

:Edit:
Why the crap does it say THE FORBIDDEN MOVIE...?  I'm kinda creeped out now...

I can't really say I agree with Zombie that "Man Bites Dog" glorifies violence.  Some of the characters in the film do, but I don't know that the film really does so.  I think it certainly addresses the glorification of violence.  It is shot kind of in the same way that COPS is, but goes much deeper.  Actually, that is what you should really watch if you want to see violence glorified: COPS, and it's available on television for all to see.

As for your question about THE FORBIDDEN MOVIE - Its name cannot be spoken.  I will discuss the matter no further but to say that you must take care that no one ever hears or reads the name of the movie whose name you so nearly uttered.  This is your quest, CFB, and you have no choice but to take it, for the fate of all humankind resides in your hands.

I've seen this before on IFC I think it was.  I thought it was interesting following around a serial killer like that. It definitely had an indie feel to it.

It wasn't on my must buy list though. Still isn't. I like alot of the stuff Criterion releases though, usually some of the better movies of the past century or movies marked with controversy that never got a proper showing when it was originally released.

BTW, what's the FORBIDDEN MOVIE?  Sorry I hadn't been keeping up with the site much the last year, must of missed the topic..

If I had to take a guess, I would go with nekromantik (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews/nekromantik.html) Just because it is so fukked up..

I finally saw this movie today, and I must say...wow.  Absolutely incredible, to say the very least.  Everything about it is absolutely top-notch, including the English subtitles (Which is, in my mind, quite a feat.).  Thanks for the recommendation.

I agree that if you haven't seen this movie, go see it.  You won't regret it.

I'm glad to hear that you saw it and liked it.  This thread coming up reminded me that I need to recommend this movie to a few other friends.
