(NES) - December 1st - 14th Part 2 - SUPER PUNCH-OUT! (SNES) - December 15th - 28th Part 3 - BATTLE ROYALE (play both games) - December 29th - 31st RULES: The rules for this competition will be similar to those of past competitions in which scores (in this case, quickest times) will determine how many overall points each participant receives per challenge. Times will not be recorded for each fighter, but instead, I will randomly draw the names of 7 opponents (one from each circuit in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! and one from each circuit in Super Punch-Out!). While both games have a Minor, Major, and World Circuit, only Super Punch-Out! has a Special Circuit. A video of this opponent drawing will be posted prior to each game's start date. After the opponents are selected and play officially begins, participants can log their fastest times for each one. For each opponent, the participant with the fastest KO/TKO time will receive 10 points, second place 9 points, third place 8 points, fourth place 7 points, fifth place 6 points, and sixth place, plus anyone who posts a time for that opponent gets 5 points (you cannot get lower than 5 points for posting a score). In addition to scoring points for fastest KO/TKO times, participants will also earn a standard number of points for finishing each circuit. Punch-Out!: Minor - 2 pts. Major - 3 pts. World - 4 pts. Dream Bout - 5 pts. Super Punch-Out! Minor - 2 pts. Major - 3 pts. World - 4 pts. Special - 5 pts. Each game will be played and scores will be tallied for 2 weeks each (December 1st - December 14th for Punch-Out! and December 15th - December 28th for Super Punch-Out!) and there will be a Battle Royale to improve scores in both games from December 29th to the 31st. Participants will only be allowed to participate in the Battle Royale if they have logged scores during the previous weeks for those games. Scores can only be logged for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! from December 1st through the 14th, and for Super Punch-Out! from December 15th through the 28th!. Of course, scores for both games can be logged during the Battle Royale and placements/score totals will be adjusted as soon as possible during this time.** IN THE SPIRIT OF KEEPING THE CONTEST FAIR, WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE PLAY ALL GAMES ON THEIR NORMAL SETTING OR WHATEVER SETTING THE GAME STARTS UP WITH (UNLESS A SPECIFIC SETTING IS REQUESTED BY THE HOST), AND THAT YOU DO NOT USE ANY CODES, GAME GENIES OR LIKE DEVICES, OR RAPID FIRE CONTROLLERS/DONGLES. Bald Bull two is the hardest for me so far. I can beat him, but I'm really hit or miss with the timing of gut-punching his bull charge. When I was a kid I could do it every time. Right now Macho Man is the hill I can't get over. I actually think he's not that difficult, but I feel that Sandman's patterns in the fight before that are kind of erratic and will throw you off your rhythm. Also, I guess if Macho Man knocks you down twice, you're done. That's kinda BS, but whatever. I will make it to that third password! I think a lot of it has to do with everyone knowing the passcode to Tyson and being able to fight him directly without having to play through an entire circuit.
I should be drawing names for the opponents from each circuit in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out either tonight or tomorrow night. I will have those posted before December 1st. I've received a few messages from competitors this month regarding how much fun they are having with this event. I'm really glad to hear this news and as always, it's nice to have a fun and good-spirited competition. However, I also want to mention this is also a playthrough, so if some of you are getting stuck on one or more of the boxers, PLEASE let us know. I'm sure I speak for other members in saying that we would be more than happy to give you some advice. Good luck and have fun! I know that bickman2k has mentioned a separate challenge this month in seeing who can get the fastest time on Tyson. Although this does not count toward the points total, I think it would pretty fun. I'll be happy to keep track of it in the initial post. Also, I was thinking that we should also compete to see who can KO (not TKO) the most opponents. Again, just for fun (no points) and I will keep a running list. What do you guys think? I first played Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! at a neighbor's house. I never owned it growing up. I think I was probably 6 or 7 the first time I played it. After some practice, I could get to Bald Bull, but could never beat him. I got to the Bull Charge in the round and then just kept dodging. I didn't know that you could hit him at all during that, so I kept dodging, eventually just getting knocked out after moving too slow. I have always enjoyed Punch-Out!! and really spent a lot of time honing my skills when it came out on the eShop. I bought it on both the 3DS and Wii U. Even though the later fights got tough, I still had a ton of fun learning the tricks and picking up new methods to take down fighters even faster. I finally was able to beat Mr. Dream probably 2-3 years ago with a lot of practice. Super Punch-Out!! was a game that I purchased with some birthday money from Toys R Us. I bought it along with Zoop... I think I was 12. I spent a lot of time working through the game, picking up the quirks, and eventually finding and beating the Special Circuit. It was tough, but a lot of fun! After I finally beat the game, I worked on getting my times down on each fighter so I could have the fastest time on each. It may not beat the original, but I feel like it is still a great entry in the series. I think one of the reasons that Punch-Out!! is so beloved and holds up so well is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. If this was a pure boxing game, it loses a lot of its charm. I don't think the fighters and their personalities could show as well and the mechanics of fighting would completely change. I've seen a couple of people who have called Punch-Out!! a rhythm game more than a boxing game. I had never considered that side of things before, but it's absolutely true. The fighters have a tell and if you get them just right, you either stun them or can even get a knock down. The cartoon graphics (rather than a realistic look) age incredibly well. And the gameplay is solid. Simple controls on your end coupled with a mix of fighting styles for your opponents means that even though your options are limited, you still can use that limited moveset to defeat your opponent. Overwatch was a game that we had considered for a December competition, but with the price of the game still a little high and since we'd only be able run it on PS4 (since I don't have an Xbox One), we thought it might lack participation.
