Title: blind gamer

LINCOLN, Neb. - Brice Mellen is a whiz at video games such as "Mortal Kombat." In that regard, the 17-year-old isn't much different from so many others his age. Except for one thing: He's blind.

I have never been so speechless in my life.  I'd like to talk with that guy and express how impressed I am to him.  That's incredible......  just....  wow.........

That is pretty amazing. I would imagine it's possible to get lucky sometimes just mashing buttons in fighting games but to win consistently... wow.

Outstanding story! And fighting games are tough enough WITH eyesight, let alone without it!

Great.  Now blind kids are going to beat the snot out of me at Soul Calibur.  |D

Seriously though, that is very impressive.  I would love to see him play just to see his play style.

Amazing.

But what I dont understand is how he is going to go into game design.   Programming is nothing but reading, especially when there is a bug, and he certainly cannot do anything with the visual design.

Now that I think about it, he coud work with the sound.  Come to think of it, its prolly a good thing, it would certainly force the audible cues in the game to make it more intuitive.

That is still impressive.  Sounds like a Weekly World News article.

I know there was that one deaf, dumb and blind kid that was good at pinball, but this is cool.

What I'd like to know is, what the hell does a blind dude need a big screen tv to play games on for? :jester:

OK, so I just played a little Tekken and I'm going to have change my earlier remark to Bushido Blade 2.

That is wicked cool.

BW i noticed he is playing MK: Deception which struck me as odd seeing as they spent a bulk of the article with him playing Soul Calibur 2

I am surprised there arn't scientists trying to get to this kid to see if he has "extra sensory powers" that alow him to do so damn good.

I actually saw a little bit of this kid playing this morning.  He had a clip on Sportscenter this morning.  It looked like he just goes on the attack from the matches begining, though i did see him run at somebody (on MK Deception), duck a kick, and then go into a combo.  I was VERY impressed by that.

Heh i bet he just catches alot of people off gaurd then.
I MK and SC you can easily dodge someone who rushes you and get them from beside or behind.

In Deception Scorpion has an attack where you turn around your opponant and slash them.
You can link that into a juggle and then once you drop the juggle you can hit your opponant again from the side and repeat.
I really would like to see how this kid plays. Pics don't do it for me.

I wonder who his player of choice was for the other games he played...

amazing story! i too saw this on sports center. it's good to hear that even though he is blind, that doesn't stop him from gaming. if he does go into design, i am sure he will make his projects for the blind. great story, wow.
