Title: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on August 17, 2016, 10:55:33 PM This is the official thread for U.S. or U.S. compatible, physical releases of games that are primarily digitally distributed. Here is the criteria for this forum:
1. A relatively small physical print run. These are usually only available at one or a few retailers. In many cases, the physical version is only available in one or two regions (often Europe or Asia) but have translated menu options. A few publishers such as Soedesco, Rising Star, and Nighthawk Interactive are specializing in these, but copies can still be tough to track down as the release channels are limited and they don't get much press. 2. A game that *seems* to not be widely known (unless you dwell in forums such as this ;) ). For example, No Man's Sky may be primarily digital but the physical version is very well advertised and mostly available, so it wouldn't fit in this list. The point of this thread is alerting gamers of lesser known physical variants, especially ones that are released much later than their digital releases. 3. Of course this can be a loose and subjective set of criteria, but the idea is that we're not looking for a game that has a stack of copies at your local GameStop or Walmart. We're looking for that game that you'd find one of, pick up, and say, "I had no idea this had a physical copy." Except, many on this list would never appear at a big retailer at all, and if they do, it really is only one or two copies. This is an experiment, and will take some practice to get right, so feel free to add games, suggestions, and anything constructive. I'll be editing the first page as we go. Imports were found at Play-Asia unless otherwise noted, Soedesco games are often only found at Amazon for us in the U.S. Limited Run Games aren't listed due to their extreme unavailability, although if folks want we can post those separately. 7 Days to Die (PS4, XB1) Absolute: Supercars (PS3) (PAL import) Abzu (PS4, XB1) Adam's Venture Chronicles (PS3) (PAL import) Adam's Venture Origins (PS4) Alien Breed Trilogy (360 import is region locked, the PS3 import version is not.) Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Raidou on August 19, 2016, 03:32:53 AM Gundam Breaker 3 (PS Vita, PS4) also has an English language release in Asian territories. The upcoming SD Gundam Generation Genesis (PS Vita, PS4) will also have an English language release in Asian territories.
The PS4 asian version of Caladrius Blaze is in English, the PS3 versions are Japanese only (i think...) Also: Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (PS Vita) - Chinese + English subs, no western release? Not to be confused with upcoming SAO: Hollow Realisation Asterisk Wars: Phoenix Festa (PS Vita) - Asian region, English language, recently released, so a U.S. version may still happen. English) Mass Effect (PS3) - Physical only available as part of the Mass Effect Trilogy collection (all regions). This is probably common knowledge by now... World of outlaws: sprint cars got a limited release I'm Europe and Australia also for ps3.
I believe otherwise those titles are only digital Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on August 19, 2016, 08:40:10 AM Thanks, Raidou and Schlibby. Raidou, do you know if A.W. Phoenix Festa is the same as Houka Kenran, or are they two different games?
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on August 19, 2016, 08:51:31 AM The PS4 asian version of Caladrius Blaze is in English, the PS3 versions are Japanese only (i think...) We own both PS3 and PS4 versions, and both have English menus. There are a few prompts in Japanese, and the rest is in English. But I appreciate the distinction vigilance. :) Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Raidou on August 19, 2016, 10:20:50 PM Thanks, Raidou and Schlibby. Raidou, do you know if A.W. Phoenix Festa is the same as Houka Kenran, or are they two different games? It's the Japanese title of A.W. Phoenix Festa. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on August 20, 2016, 12:02:19 AM To go along with Schlibby, Kick-ass 2 was cancelled for the States and only released in Europe for X360 as well. It's available physically and digitally, and wasn't aware it had a small distribution run - just that it was cancelled right at production for US, and delayed for some time for Europe.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Schlibby on August 20, 2016, 04:46:28 AM To go along with Schlibby, Kick-ass 2 was cancelled for the States and only released in Europe for X360 as well. It's available physically and digitally, and wasn't aware it had a small distribution run - just that it was cancelled right at production for US, and delayed for some time for Europe. I think the general consencous is that it only had a release somewhere like Spain (although the box has loads of languages on it) Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: thegreatska on August 20, 2016, 10:31:20 AM DJMaxx Technika Tune (PSVITA) - was available exclusively via the developer's website i think

And boy, talk about timing. I saw this pop up today... https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/357745-smallerobscurelimited-physical-release-deals-and-discussion-thread/ We got here first! :D Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Schlibby on August 20, 2016, 01:13:39 PM Summon Night 5 recently had a limited pre-order only physical release on PSP (followed by a digital release). There's something like 7 variant covers for this
I believe Gaijinworks also released class of heroes 2 on psp before that in the same manner Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on August 20, 2016, 05:19:58 PM Gaijinworks released 3 variant covers for Class of Heroes 2.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on August 21, 2016, 07:12:04 PM Of Orcs and Men (PS3, 360, PC, PAL Import) RPG
Agarest Generations of War (PS3, PAL Import) RPG (called in the US 'Record of Agarest War', released for the 360 but not for the PS3 in the US) Saint Seiya: Sanctuary Battle (PS3, PAL Import) Fighting/RPG Indeed, there are a lot of great indie games, formerly only available digitally, released. Almost too many. :) There will be also 'Super Dungeon Bros.' released in two months. Thanks for the list! I was looking for such a list, great idea! Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on August 22, 2016, 08:25:18 AM Updated, thanks!
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Link41 on August 22, 2016, 09:35:37 AM While Lumo (PS4) is coming to retail in Both EU/NA. The EU gets a retail version of Lumo (Vita) and we don't :(
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: noiseredux on August 22, 2016, 03:25:59 PM is this going to be a console only list? Because I know quite a few limited run PC games. Just look at the Indie Box alone to get started.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on August 22, 2016, 04:02:49 PM I think we'd need a completely separate thread to be honest for PC. Even so, this thread is going to get large VERY QUICKLY with just console. We're pairing region exclusives with smaller runs, and there are a BUNCH of region exclusives for each console.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on August 22, 2016, 10:30:59 PM Yeah, I know it stretches across a few lines. I initially included a few import physical copies of games that are only digital in the U.S. Didn't mean for it to become an import exclusives list, except for physical exceptions, although that is a natural result. Maybe we could have a separate list of Indiebox, Kickstarter, Limited Run, etc. Lots of lists to keep up with though. I guess it's whatever best serves the community. As mentioned, this is a bit of an experiment, and this is exactly the learning process we need to go through. All opinions welcomed. Except Noiseredux. Those PC only guys aren't 'true collectors,' amiright? ;)
Oh, OK. We'll let Noise in. The game should be on the list as well. The game fits the 'retro' category as well as the character of a digitally only release: It is a 2D-sidescrolling hack n' slash, fast paced and moreover - very good and cheap! :) Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on August 26, 2016, 04:11:33 PM I've started a similar list for the PS Vita, tracking which games have PhysEng options in which regions. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on September 26, 2016, 01:02:27 AM Watching the video about Limited Run Games ('My Life in Gaming' is one of my favorite game youtube channels) I have to make a comment:
I'm heavily opposed to digital relases, I only buy physical releases and I'm really glad that we get more and more physical releases of great games from smaller developers. However, Limited Run Games is a different kind of a breed. I dislike the idea to release a game with the intention to limit the production run right away in order to increase the value of a game. As a gamer AND collector it doesn't make sense to me to see the value of a new game only in its rarity. Customers who cancel their orders because a game doesn't sell out within hours because they suspect it is not rare from the getgo? There is so much wrong with this attitude, I don't wanna get into this nonsense. For older games and overlooked games, rarity for collectors is important and makes sense. So does the limitation of production numbers for the publishers for economic reasons, mostly cost and profit calculation. But I just don't get it why great games should be very limited in order to hype the rarity and value of a game in order to make sure it sells. On the other hand maybe I'm just too jaded or too lazy to run to my laptop and get games at a certain time and rearrange my schedule so I can say I got this RARE game. :) So far I don't have any Limited Run-games. It is just too bad that great games like Futuridium und the new Oddworld are so limited that I can't buy them anymore. And I'm afraid it stays this way. I'm way too old to run after every fashionable movement and certainly too old and too cheap to spend more than the original price. It's great Limited Run are making these physical releases. But the way they release so few copies is completely illogical. How are they benefitting from the games going out of stock in 5 mins? How are they benefitting from the games doubling in price straight away on eBay? Instead of helping those who like physical releases they are just giving the finger to those too slow or who missed a game. I agree. That's why I don't want to be part of this game. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on September 28, 2016, 07:13:52 PM @Schlibby: Limited Run's business model makes a lot of sense, and as we can all see, it works. It is based on anticipated rarity and therefore on hype.
Let's say they would release a game without making the production number public (let's say 4000). I guarantee you that the game would not sell out in days or hours. It would be up for weeks and months. Only the perception it might be too late in a couple of days (collectors) and the prospect to sell it for five times as much (terrible resellers) is a guarantee that all the produced games will sell -- and this for the original well-calculated price and the calculated profit margin. And it is exactly this business model I heavily dislike. If a lot of people think that Limited Run-games will be rare and pricey or even smell a future Stadium Events, I'd be very cautious. In my experience, the games which are anticipated as rare and hyped as such will not be rare! There are so many examples for this in the last twenty years. However, the games no-one talks about, the games which fly under the radar and have similar low production runs and/or are underappreciated when it comes to gameplay, THESE are the games which turn out to be pricey and rare. I bought Lumo a couple of days ago. GREAT game. WONDERFUL game. (It is a Solstice (NES) clone through and through, and if you liked this game and Equinox (SNES) do yourself a favor and buy it.) No hype, no anticipated rarity, no ebay resellers, no babble. Just a great game easily available and cheap; and it might be that the demand and price for the new Oddworld by Limited Run will be very modest in a couple of years (because collectors who are interested in the game have it already) and the demand and price for Lumo high. That's why I'm very careful when it comes to speculations about rarity, and I think that there is way too much craziness and money involved in the current collector's-game-market anyway. Noone needs a business model based on hype under these circumstances. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on September 28, 2016, 07:45:39 PM @Schlibby and Raidou: I agree. That's why I don't want to be part of this game. This. So this. (also add Nighthawk Interactive on that publisher list.) I've ordered some Limited Run games, which I immediately open, only because I desire to support physical releases (and several were titles I wanted.) I for one support the 'free market' but even more, I desire for every video game to be available for 'reasonable' prices (to support the developers) and am supremely disappointed when a game's price makes it unavailable for many who want to play it. Finding games like Lumo are exactly why I created this forum (and need to update it more regularly), because it is an excellent game that gets swept under the rug of more highly promoted titles. (Also, see Assault Suit Leynos, released the same day I believe and for the same price.) Lumo was great, and I already showed it off to a buddy who immediately went to buy it afterward. He also played and enjoyed Futuridium (because he saw my physical copy) but he'll have to pick it up digitally, since it was a Limited Run game. :P I'll be back later to update the list with the last few mentioned titles (and I already ordered Owlboy, woohoo! (and some of them released previously digital only ganes as well physically) Nippon Ichi is of course a completely different story. BTW, I didn't know Soedesco very well, only from the covers of a lot of great indie games for the PS4. (Giana Sisters, Teslagrad, Toki Tori 2+) The list of their games are impressive and long, and the soon-to-be-releases look very interesting if you visit their website. It is a Dutch publisher in Rotterdam, here is an interesting article about their company. More impressive than Limited Run if you ask me. :) http://www.nisute.com/2015/05/08/a-deep-dive-into-the-game-publishing-world-of-soedesco/ Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on October 03, 2016, 01:10:06 AM Strange coincidence and unimportant: I just discovered that the developer of Giana Sisters is Black Forest Games. I am from the Black Forest (it is a region in the southwest of Germany), and indeed the company is located in Offenburg. I lived there until I was 30, and lived nearby Offenburg from 2009 to 2015 again, but now I live in the US again. Damn, I could have driven there in twenty minutes. If I had known I'd have contacted them since I was always interested in the economic situation of smaller developers.

I had my own list (like so many of you probably) but I caught only half the games now listed.
I want to give a big heads-up to LUMO! I finished the game in the meantime which is almost a minor miracle considering the big backlog I have and that not a lot of games can keep me going to the finish line. Super Mario 3D World, Song of the Deep, and finally Lumo drew me in in the last couple of months. Lumo is a hommage to a now extinct genre, the 2D puzzle adventure platformer in the tradition of Solstice and Equinox. Like Shovel Knight it manages to create its own atmosphere and identity with its humor and wonderful game design. Fantastic graphics (every room is well drawn), great soothing sound and - most importantly for this genre - spot-on controls. I had a blast playing this game. There were a lot of surprises and Ah- and Oh- moments and lots of references to classic gaming. I don't know about the print run (publisher is Rising Star) and how much in demand it will be in the future; but with its fantastic gameplay and under-the-radar advertisement this might be not only a great game to play but also to collect. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Bear78 on October 25, 2016, 12:28:43 PM I don't know about the print run (publisher is Rising Star) and how much in demand it will be in the future; but with its fantastic gameplay and under-the-radar advertisement this might be not only a great game to play but also to collect. Being Rising Star, it's defiantly on the lower end. I believe all regions got the PS4 physical release but only the UK got a physical Vita release. Geometry Wars 3 just got a physical PS4 and Xbone release but not sure how limited it will be. Duke Nukem 3D 20th Anniversary got a physical release on Xbone and PS4 that's exclusive to GameStop in the US. Also LRG announced a few more games yesterday. Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD on Vita as part of their LRG collection and Skullgirls 2nd Encore on PS4 and Vita which will have a pre-order system (not sure if it's part of the LRG collection or they are publishing it like the Silvercase PC edition). And Speaking on The Slivercase remake, NIS is supposed to be bringing it physically to PS4 in the US and UK. It's worth watching!

Slain (PS4, Pal) Scheduled for a mid-to late-November release, Slain is a pixelated (like Shovel Knight) 2D-action game. It seems to be a straightforward Castlevania clone, published by Merge Games, Pal regions only. Sold by Amazon UK and Play Asia. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Raidou on November 01, 2016, 08:53:19 AM Came across this one today:
Worlds of Magic: Planar Conquest (PS4) - Physical in PAL territories only (I think...), published by Maximum Games. It's very new (28th Oct 2016), but I couldn't find any signs that a US physical version was on its way. Another game of the category 'I didn't know this exists and never saw an advertisement': Zenith (PS4, PAL) is already released, published by PQube. It's an overhead action-RPG with the emphasis on action and underdeveloped RPG elements. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on November 01, 2016, 10:55:53 PM
I think you are right. I looked up Amazon US and the German Amazon site. The game is offered on Amazon Germany (amazon.de) with the German version (USK label on the cover) as well as the British version (PEGI label on the cover) for XboxOne. However, under the German version it was stated that the game will be released on November 11. It seems that your information is more accurate. Probably it was intended to release it for the XBoxOne but in all likelihood it got cancelled and Amazon is not up to date. BBFC is the British ratings system. However most games here in the U.K. just have PEGI and not BBFC nowadays. I believe it's a requirement in Germany to have a USK rating though. However German games will often have PEGI too Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on November 02, 2016, 07:28:50 AM BBFC is no longer used for rating video games in UK. Germany will switch to PEGI exclusively in 2017.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: mumboking on November 02, 2016, 02:07:02 PM BBFC is no longer used for rating video games in UK. Makes sense, since BBFC stands for British Board of Film Classification.Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on November 02, 2016, 03:12:50 PM http://www.trueachievements.com/n25632/earthlock-festival-of-magic-to-receive-retail-release.htm
Looks like Earthlock and REUS are getting physical XB1 releases from SOEDESCO, as well as PS4. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Bear78 on November 04, 2016, 10:34:02 AM The original Darius (Which is a "Arcade Archives" release on PSN) is getting a physical release but it's only available in a big box set.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on November 04, 2016, 11:47:49 AM Toro (PS4): Only released physically in Spain.
Los Caballeros Del Zodiaco Alma De Soldados (Mexico) / Os Cavaleiros do Zodíaco: Alma dos Soldados (Brazil) (PS4): Only NTSC releases of Saint Seiya: Soldiers' Soul. Not released in US/Canada. Atrapa la Bandera (PS4): Only released in Spain. Rugby League Live 3: Released in PAL regions only. Dino Dini's Kick Off Revival: Released in PAL regions only. These were all submitted recently by hockeycollector. Thanks! Also: Yomawari: Night Alone was recently released on Vita. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Raidou on November 05, 2016, 08:15:59 PM Also: Yomawari: Night Alone was recently released on Vita. It's being sold as Yomawari: A Night ALone + htol#NiQ: The Firefly Diaries (both games on the same card). Comes with a reversible cover slip so each game has its own cover. Thanks, NIS - I've been wanting an English version for a while! Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: slackur on November 06, 2016, 09:15:35 PM Thanks for the compliments and all of the help! Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Raidou on November 10, 2016, 01:18:16 AM Some info about Games Workshop licensed games:
Space Hulk Ascension (PS4) - Available physically in PAL regions Warhammer 40,000: Deathwatch (PS4) - already on the list, but isn't due for physical release until February 2017. Also: There are 2 Tadeo Jones games for the Playstation Vita. The second is: Tadeo Jones y el Manuscrito Perdido (PSV) - Spain only. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on November 10, 2016, 12:32:11 PM Obscure non-game: Netflix released a boot-up disc for the Wii. If we're going to that depth, the Muramasa demo for Wii was only distributed by Play-n-Trade and most were thrown out. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: hockeycollector on November 10, 2016, 01:53:37 PM Figured I'd chime in here, since I've been submitting some of these recently and I've been keeping up similar lists (exclusively for PS4) on some other forums.
Pure Hold'Em World Poker Championship (PS4) is one I just submitted on here. As far as I know it is only available through Wal-Mart.com and a few ebay sellers. Tumblestone is on this list and but I'd add that, for now, it appears to be an NTSC exclusive release, which is a bit odd for that type of game. It may be worth adding Atari Flashback Classics: Volume 1 and Volume 2 (PS4) to this list, seem to be NTSC-only with some odd distribution channels (i.e. Amazon already has ran out of its own stock). Got confirmation from Sodesco directly that Tower of Guns for PS4 and XB1 will see a retail release this month in the U.S., its already appearing on some online inventories. Got another direct confirmation from Headup Games that Bridge Constructor (PS4) will release at the end of November in physical format in German-speaking countries only. Also UIG has let me know that Professional Farmer 2017 (PS4, XB1) will see a physical release in the U.S. in a matter of days (it may already be trickling onto Wal-mart shelves, someone saw an XB1 copy the other day). I have a feeling that release will be really under the radar. According to Microids Moto Racer 4 will see a stateside release on January 24th, I'm assuming it will be a physical release but we'll see. I did pick up the PAL copy already (came out last week). These are all direct messages I've gotten from the publishers on either Twitter or Facebook, so the info is right from the source. Other German-exclusive titles hitting late November/early December are Silence and Der Industrie Gigant II HD (Industry Giant II). Silence looks like a game that maybe could get published in other regions over time, but it is a German developer/publisher working on that, so I'm not sure what the plan is with that game... It is only available at Gamestop stores in that country. Well, we can finally reveal what it is. Night Trap: 25th Anniversary Edition. We went to L.A. to shoot an interview with Jim Riley, Co-Creator and Director of Night Trap. This interview will be edited and included as a bonus feature in the game. In addition, in the new week or so we'll be releasing our documentary, Night Trap 25 Years Later. Its in the middle of being edited right now, but here's the title sequence as a little teaser. Let me tell you all, that we couldn't have done this without all of you. As a 13 year old playing this game on the Sega CD, I never expected in a million years that I would ever get to chance to see this footage clear as day, but also have something that will actually be a part of the game. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on June 05, 2017, 07:27:04 PM I suspect the list of the OP doesn't get an update anymore, at the same time we are flooded with lots of indie/smaller publisher/retro -games. Here are the newest recent additions to my personal list of games coming out or are already published. I think Rime and Cursed Castilla Ex were already mentioned.
Battle Chasers Nightwar (THQ Nordic, action RPG, 2017) Cladun Returns (NIS) Broken Sword 5 The Sexy Brutale (Badland Games) Portal Knights (505 Games) Victor Vran Overkill Edition (Wired Productions, overhead shooter/action RPG) World to the West (July 14, Soedesco, adventure-puzzle in the tradition of Zelda) Aerea (June 30, Soedesco, CollEd $40, action RPG) 8-Bit Armies (July 18, Soedesco, CollEd $40, RTS) Rogue Stormers (June 9, Soedesco, Run 'n gun, 2D sidescroller) Dead by Daylight (June 20, 505 Games, horror) The Town of Light (June 6, Wired Productions, psycho-horror) Aven Colony (July 25, simulation) Lock's Quest (THQ Nordic, strategy/simulation retrogame) Sine Mora Ex (great 2D shmup, THQ Nordic) In particular the releases of SOEDESCO look promising. Among them Rogue Stormers which is already on physical disc in Europe but will get a physical release in NA in June. The developer is the German Black Forest Games which did also Giana Sisters. It's a 2D-sidescrolling Twin stick shooter which at first sight looks like Contra or Gunstar Heroes but has an immersive and deep progression system with RPG elements. Interesting game which I'll pick up for sure; and Sine Mora Ex is a given! :) Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: MetalFRO on June 06, 2017, 03:36:11 PM ^^ I'm looking very forward to Sine Mora EX, and I'm hoping it gets a physical release on the Switch.

Sine Mora EX will be fantastic, I love shoot-em-ups. Yesterday I got the Ghouls n Ghost -clone Cursed Castilla EX published by Eastasiasoft, and today I played it for two hours. Dang ist that a tough game. Not Only am I old, now I'm actually feeling old. :) Sometimes I doubt if I actually finished 25 years ago all of the Ninja Gaidens, Battletoads and Super Ghouls n Ghosts. :) I'm just not used to these difficulty levels anymore. I expected that an outstanding game like Cuphead will get a physical release, let's hope a decent publisher gets it and not Limited Run. There are so many so called indie-games released, it is truly a steadily growing niche market. Thank godness we are getting these great games now on physical disc for about three years now. Did you know? Currently, Limited Run Games has published 36 games for the Playstation Vita, which is roughly 10-12% of the system's estimated PhysEng library (estimated at 320). Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on November 09, 2017, 10:56:28 PM Great, another company capitalising on how hard it is to get physical games by making physical games harder to get... Great statement, I completely agree. The salesmodel of Limited Run isn't only hippocritical but also counterproductive. Small saleswindows from 90 seconds to 15 minutes on average make it much easier to get downloads than physical games. Limited Run is overall a big disservice to gamers and collectors. There is no need to sell their games with rarity hype and pressure to get the games now or pay much later on ebay. Ebay sellers were factored in their salesmodel from the beginning, and still to this day LR games are an ebay sellers paradise. The justifications by LR for their salesmodel are from hippocritical to ridiculous. They claim that a normal salesmodel with "overstock" would "sink our ship and our developers" (Quote LR) which is utter nonsense as reality shows. More than half a dozen smaller publishers which do exactly the same thing as LR prove every month that this is not the case. THQ Nordic, Soedesco, Maximum Games, Badland Games, Rising Star, PQube or 505 Games, just to name a few, sell games from small developers and/or digital games on physical disc in a regular fashion without the rarity hype and without accomodating ebay scalpers. They are expanding, hiring and producing more games than ever in the last three years, more than 200. According to LR they all should be bankrupt by now. The most ridiculous PR statement (by 'Doug', one of the owners) by LR justifying their way of selling games was "There isn't unlimited demand for this stuff. Atari crashed the industry by overprinting!" (No comment! The nonsense hurts intellectually everyone who knows game history) There is only one who profits from this salesmodel. LR eliminated conveniently the number one uncertainty of every business, namely the final sales numbers, at the cost of gamers and collectors while laughing all the way to the bank. There is no doubt in my mind that they are cutting severely into the business of the other small developers named above. Something which really irks me is that LR has a very positive reputation despite their obvious terrible salesstrategy and is associated as the only company which publishes digital only games on physical disc. They created an adamant fanbase of online footsoldiers which ranges from forum members of gaming websites to youtube channels. The most recent example is the channel of MetalJesusRocks who interviewed one of the LR-owners. No critical question, no question why LR can't sell as a small publisher physical discs in a normal way while so many other small publishers can. If you start an interview with 'I'm a huge fan and a strong supporter of you guys' then some critical questions are not likely. Additionally, lots of gamers and youtubers don't know that there are other small publishers out there which prove that the Limited Run-way isn't the only way to sell indie-games on physical disc and therefore sheepishly accept the terrible salesmodel and associate LR as the only company to sell these games. The positive image was mainly created because these two guys sold their story with the games. Gamers and collectors like you and me who happened to be game designers and who are interested in preserving games and faced bankruptcy (Mighty Rabbit Studios). It is still a mystery to me how you can serve gamers and collectors if you sell games like they do without the economic necessity for it. The two big problems for game collectors today are rarity hype and (unfortunately in the meantime) ebay. LR is tailored towards both and exploits the situation. The real danger lies in copycat publishers. The new Strictly Limited Games is a German company which dabbles in the same nonsense as LR. It doesn't surprise me, I'm German. Special Reserve Games was already founded a year ago. In the article of the previous post are a lot of companies listed; while I'm not a big admirer of 'worldwide limited print runs of 4000'-ads I have to say that the other companies sell their games with pre-orders and without the rarity hype which gives consumers enough time to buy and without the pressure to do it right away. Only Limited Run and Special Reserve (and now Strictly Limited) sell their games with small sales windows at certain times in one day. Again, the justifications by LR not to do pre-orders (they did ist so far twice of the 80 games they published) are from hippocritical to ridiculous. It looks like the Switch will get some good amount of these games, the Switch as a handheld is of course ideal for indie games and might become a serious contender to the PS4 in this growing niche market. More games to buy in the long run, terrible! :) Good to hear that you liked Axiom Verge so much. I'm really curious about this game and suspect it will be the ideal game for me. I had the same feeling about Song of The Deep and Lumo, and I loved both to death. I was wondering if the physical copy is a Gamestop exclusive?? By all criticism of the trailers so far, I'm still optimistic about the game. I find the art style not bad at all, and the game seems to be truthful to the original and has certainly better translation than the American SNES-release. Play-Asia has recently an impressive lineup of exclusive limited titles. Soon it will be 'Vesta' and 'Coma. The Recut,' then Rainbow Skies and Rainbow Moon in February as interesting RPGs. Down the line Unepic. Except for Alchemic Joust and Tachyon Project (not interested) I have the Play Asia exclusives and these are games of good quality, from Ghost Blade HD to Cursed Castilla EX and Caveman Warriors. These CEs are also impressive and worth the price. These games come in glossy, very sturdy cardboard boxes, and with at least a soundtrack CD, sometimes additionally with an artbook. All for $30. And with the recent sale (unfortunately over) you got two for the price of one. I got Rive and Semispheres for $15 each, not bad. These CEs are much of much higher quality and much cheaper than those by Limited Run. You know, I really have no major problems with digital distribution. Call it what you will, drinking the kool-aid or whatever; I'd made my peace. But every now and then, I would like some sort of box or instruction book to play with. Something where one professional paid another professional to create something pretty that I can flip through. Like maybe Secret of Mana and Ni No Kuni 2. I know, I had more than one person (possible cruelly) tell me these games are available on other, more console'y (and hand-held'y) platforms that occasionally produce such physical things, and really as primarily a PC gamer I should be thankful that I get anything. I had no comment to that, except to say I am glad I get a chance to play these games, I just think it would be cooler to have a booklet or box that I don't have to print off myself, is all. I'm looking forward to both games, but I will especially enjoy the old Saturn classic from 1997 I heard so much about. With shipping a bit steep ($50) but I just couldn't resist.
I have no parody shooters, even back then when I read in magazines about the SNES Parodius i was disappointed that it never came out in the US. @Bear78: That Monsterboy and the Cursed Kingdom is getting a physical release is great news! I got in the meantime from PlayAsia the two shoot-em-ups Sturmwind (Dreamcast) and Game Paradise Cruisin Mix (PS4) and both games are just great and a blast to play. Sturmwind is a first class shmup, and Game Paradise a wonderful parody shooter. I got a lot of games from Playasia and eastasisoft recently. Vesta, Coma: The Recut, Unepic, and Bleed and Bleed 2 are all good to great games and worthwhile playing. The exclusive lineup of games from PlayAsia is getting better and better. There are hardly mediocre games in the entire lineup. The limited editions of Rainbow Skies and Rainbow Moon (latter got a release from the unfortunate Limited Run Games a while ago) can be pre-ordered until the end of February. PlayAsia announced a couple of days ago that the exclusive game available also in LE 'One More Dungeon,' a pixel-art rogue like dungeon crawler, will be soon up for pre-order. Watched reviews for the game, I'm pretty sure that I will pass on this one. They seem more like Soedesco, who create physical releases for indies and whose products are sold in retail stores. For example, I've seen Darkest Dungeon in Australian retail stores. GameFairy is indeed not in the nonsensical 'limited run'-business. Like Soedesco and so many other small publishers they sell their games via a normal retail route. However, not every game shows up on the German or British Amazon website. GameFairy is actually Headup Games, a German developer/publisher. Their best known game is Bridge Constructor. If you like Bridge Contructor on physical disc...there you go. You can directly buy from their website, their prices are reasonable. I bought just last week European only releases on physical disc, namely the two RPGs Trulon and Pixel Heroes, and additionally the Limbo-clone Toby. Unlike Limited Run, they combine easily shipping costs. No matter how many games you buy, the shipping from Germany to America is $4. Darkest Dungeon indeed got an American release, so did The Inner World. PS: Trulon and Pixel Heroes are not in the RFGen database, and Rad Rogers (published by THQ Nordic) is not in there, too. Good news: Unlike Limited Run Games (which creates the online equivalent of a Black Friday sale with hundreds of customers lining up at store doors and open at a certain time to make it difficult to get games) they will sell their games with convenient two-week pre-orders. Their first two games will be 'The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human' and 'Elliot Quest.' If you have trouble finding the Limited Edition of OWLBOY (and a lot of retailers are sold out), PlayAsia still has it for the PS4. The edition for the Switch is sold out. I gave up on collecting LEs for my PS4 RPG-collection with very few exceptions (too many, too pricey plus ebay scalping), but for this non-RPG I made an exception. I like the Norwegian developer D-Pad of the Owlboy game which worked on this game for almost a decade, and I truly like the publisher Soedesco which puts indie games on physical disc and sells them via a regular retail route without the common rarity hype. Both deserve my money. I'd put Owlboy on the same level as Shovel Knight, Limbo, Matterfall, Nex Machina, Axiom Verge, Brothers. A Tale of two Sons, The Sexy Brutale, What Remains of Edith Finch, Song of the Deep, and Lumo. Just a first-rate game. Also big time preordering the Undertale CE. It's a great game and the collector's edition isn't going to devalue any time soon. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Bear78 on September 06, 2018, 11:53:22 AM Gone Home is getting an exclusive physical release on the Switch from iam8bit.

First off, Hellblade is finally getting a physical release on PS4 and Xbone! https://twitter.com/NinjaTheory/status/1049646007078785024 Second is Tetris Effect is also confirmed to be getting a physical release. https://twitter.com/enhance_exp/status/1049692216497590272 Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Bear78 on December 05, 2018, 04:35:08 PM ... and we got another limited release publisher entering the playing field!
Warned Collectors https://twitter.com/WarnedCollector https://www.warned-collectors.com/ First release is another physical release of Fury (3rd time!). I might be in for Boiling Bolt though.... Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: tactical_nuke on December 05, 2018, 06:57:01 PM I can’t do it man, my wallet is weak.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Bear78 on December 07, 2018, 01:13:12 PM I ended up ordering Boiling Bolt. I'm a sucker for physical shmups and this looks like a decent Resogun clone.

Warned Collectors https://twitter.com/WarnedCollector https://www.warned-collectors.com/ First release is another physical release of Fury (3rd time!). I might be in for Boiling Bolt though.... Thanks for the heads-up! It is difficult enough to keep up with physical indie games, additionally there are more and more small publishers to release these games in small numbers. I ordered Boiling Bolt and Dungeon Rushers. Shoot-em-ups and RPGs are a must for me independently of game quality. (typical collector sickness :) ) Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: MetalFRO on December 09, 2018, 11:15:15 PM Super Rare Games is releasing a physical version of Steredenn: Binary Stars to the Switch, limited to 3000 copies:

Not that I don't think they've released some good games, just that most of the ones I would want I have already got on PS4 from someone else. I was all for Steredenn until SLG beat them to it with a PS4 release. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: lendelin on March 14, 2019, 11:56:34 AM The physical releases of retro- and indiegames became a flood nowadays and it is hard to keep up. (Btw, there is a good site which keeps track and delivers a nice overview: https://limitedgamenews.com/ )
However, there are two outstanding games which will go physical in the next couple of days as open pre-orders. BLOODSTAINED: CURSE OF THE MOON will be up for pre-order by Limited Run tomorrow, and the fantastic THE MESSENGER will be released by Special Reserve games on March 19th. First-rate games done right with great replay value which go beyond the mere nostalgia factor and pixel enthusiasm without good game design. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: RobotWillie on August 31, 2019, 03:51:46 PM So I was on Amazon looking at my wishlist and what get's recommended to me? The thing I had been hoping for for a few years now and them some. Yakuza 5 will finally be getting a physical release in the west, and it will be packaged in with a remaster of 3 and 4, all for 60$. I am thrilled it will have 3 and 4 with it, I am just happy 5 will be getting a physical finally. So it will be something I likely pre-order which I rarely do, February 11 is the current estimate.
And nope I hadn't bought the digital version waiting for this, and look, it paid off. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: tactical_nuke on October 26, 2019, 11:11:11 PM Just got my Skullgirls album and controller skin from Skybound. I really hope they ship an outer box that fits everything with the game. They've been rather fishy, dodging the question on social media so I'm kind of worried.
Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Bear78 on November 21, 2019, 10:33:39 AM So it looks like the Spyro Reignited Trilogy on PS4 is getting a second print WITH all the games on disc. There's some more info in the twitter thread below but the only way to tell the difference on the NTSC release is if it has a Crash trilogy insert in the case and the disc has a "2019" copyright date.

An email from their customer service said they'd have a shipping date next week. That was in December. What the fuck. Here's something you SHOULD back though: Platinum Games' Wonderful 101 Switch port Kickstarter. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/platinumgames/the-wonderful-101-remastered) US addresses get the physical game for about $50 shipped. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: MetalFRO on February 05, 2020, 09:48:51 AM Here's something you SHOULD back though: Platinum Games' Wonderful 101 Switch port Kickstarter. (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/platinumgames/the-wonderful-101-remastered) US addresses get the physical game for about $50 shipped. I want to back it, but I'm conflicted. Dangen Entertainment is somehow involved with marketing of the Kickstarter, and they've been outed recently for pretty shady business practices, as well as some scummy stuff their CEO Ben Judd did (harassment, among other things). W101 is my favorite Wii U game, so I want to see it have life beyond the console, but I'm not sure I want to throw any money Dangen's way. They published the indie shmup Devil Engine, which got a lot of buzz, and apparently sold reasonably well. The developer has apparently still not been paid for the game, months later. They've already far exceeded their goal as of this post, and are sitting at over $1.3 million. That tells me they're likely to release, and I can pick up a physical copy when it comes out. I'm undecided at this point. Title: Re: The Physical Form Forum Post by: Bear78 on August 18, 2020, 11:42:36 AM There's yet another new publisher out there... Premium Edition Games which was started by JP'S SWITCHMANIA. I guess he got tired of begging everyone else for games so he just started his own publishing company :P
