Title: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 12, 2016, 10:18:58 PM
If you couldn't tell by your social media feeds the augmented-reality cell phone game developed by Niantic known as Pokemon GO has taken the world by storm since its release last week. The game is played by walking around in real life hunting Pokemon who appear on the map which can caught in a mini-game in which they float around on whatever is seen through your phone's camera. The game, quite frankly, is one of the most fun things I have ever played in my life. As someone who enjoys the outdoors as well as video games, this is such a great blend of these two things. The best part for me is the social aspect. Not only is my wife playing and walking around with me, but I've actually met and made friends playing around my neighborhood. Though the performance of the game has improved greatly since launch, it crashes a lot. I can only hope that performance will continue to improve. So what say you RFGen? Are you playing Pokemon GO? What team are you on? What tips can you share? What's the rarest Pokemon you've caught? What's the coolest real life experience you've stumbled into while playing? Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: nupoile on July 12, 2016, 10:26:46 PM I see people walking around, doing this in front of my house. Mostly on the other side of the street but they are definitely playing it. Best meme I've seen so far on it was something along the lines of, "It's raining, so I can't go outside and play video games"
PC Gamer put up a video on how you can play it from your PC without leaving your house: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6EQM7yWIgU Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on July 12, 2016, 10:32:03 PM I was going to start a thread like this lol
I ran into some trouble tonight i was going to use the tablet and phone i bought and use my WP as a hotspot. I'm guessing that it can't handle the load so it wasn't allowing them to connect. Additionally the phone never seemed to find GPS which i am hoping was a fluke. I'm about 3/4 of the way thru level 4 so no team yet. Will end up on Moltres or Articuno tho. Leaning towards Articuno as it was my preference in the games. Strongest is an Oddish at 110. Caught: Rattatta Oddish Shelder Zubat Pidgeotto Krabby Paras Raticate Pidgey Weedle (evolved to Kakuna) Started with Charmander.(Always my starter in the games.) Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 12, 2016, 10:36:59 PM @nupoile Talk about defeating the purpose!
Supposedly San Francisco is a great place to play it too, as the developer is located there and it is apparently rich with Pokestops and Gyms. @Izret Definitely go Moltres (Team Valor in this game), matches the site's color scheme! Also saw this. Fact? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CnGOYHBW8AAGGG3.jpg:large I have seen this from multiple sources but have yet to try it myself. Should be legit. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 13, 2016, 08:22:59 AM I know that many of you are probably familiar with my disdain for all things Pokémon (too old when it came out, wrong time in my life, annoyed by super fanboys, etc.). However, if you listened to our E3 podcast, you probably heard me express some genuine interest and well yeah, even excitement, about the release of Pokémon GO. I never saw myself purchasing the app, but when I heard it was free, I thought, "Why not?" Well, I'm pretty hooked....up to the point where I walked 10 miles yesterday playing it on work breaks, my lunch break, and around my neighborhood last night with the kids. The funny thing is that my boss plays it and collects Pokémon and balls for her kids to play at night, and my place of employment is a PokeStop!! I work close to downtown in a fairly big city, so there is a great deal of activity during the day in regards to the game. My house is out in the country so no Pokestops or gyms, but lots of space to walk and find critters. My kids absolutely love it and we had a blast last night running around the neighborhood and hunting together.
Like Shawn, I think the game has some great positives such as the social aspect, the exercise, getting outdoors, and for me, spending time doing something fun with my kids. And oh yeah. VALOR beeyotches!!! Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on July 13, 2016, 01:03:53 PM I am 10 XP shy of level 5. When get home tonight I guess I get to decode where I am siding.
Also got my sons phone activated. When I changed my plan to add him I was given 2 android phones. So now I have 3 android phones and a tablet... Not at all excessive. Plus side back up for inevitable breaking and with a sim swap that means back up batteries lol Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Wempster on July 13, 2016, 02:50:58 PM I've been playing since the first day or two. It's been great going around my small town and catching things. I showed my wife who likes to walk around and has her FitBit so she downloaded it and is now more into it than I am. Of course my 17 year old daughter saw it and thought it was dumb....until she tried it. Now we are all 3 walking around looking for Pokemon and trying to keep the Keystone Heights Library Gym for Team Valor!!! (At least me and my wife are, my kid chose Team Mystic) Having a great time with this game and really enjoying seeing people out and starting hunting groups with people they would have never otherwise met. We went to the Atlantic side of Florida yesterday and caught all the MagiKarp I could want. Even caught a Dratini! I hope this momentum can sustain itself.

I don't think that's true at all from what I've seen. Do you even have it yet in Canada? Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 13, 2016, 03:58:27 PM Nobody (possibly a ridiculous small percentage) born after 1985 is playing this, unless they have kids. I've seen people of all ages playing. Anyway, when the game launched there was nothing in downtown Austin for some reason, now it's rotten with Pokestops and Gyms. My wife works there and I'm jealous. Where I work there ain't shit. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on July 13, 2016, 03:59:25 PM No, we don't have it in Canada yet. People are playing it here though, by either getting the mirrored illegal version, or changing their region settings. I am probably biased (I hate Pokemon) but I cant see many people, late 30's to early 40's, being on board for this
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on July 13, 2016, 04:01:00 PM Just realized my original post was wrong: I meant people born BEFORE 1985
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 13, 2016, 04:05:04 PM Dude, you're way off base. I'm thirty five and my wife is....well, older than that and we're having a blast. Never played a Pokemon game in my life. There's more to it than that. Read my original post, the fun part is getting out in the world.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 13, 2016, 04:20:47 PM Yeahhhhhhh....so you don't have it there yet. Out your element there Donnie. Honestly even if I didn't have kids I would have tried this based on seeing it at E3. I think you'll be really surprised at how many people over 30 without kids are playing this when you finally get it.

I am probably biased (I hate Pokemon) but I cant see many people, late 30's to early 40's, being on board for this I can't stand Pokemon either. I was one of the only kids at my elementary school who didn't own any of the cards. (I'm 26, so I was in the thick of the craze) My dad recently bought me a new smart phone for my birthday, before he gave it to me he downloaded the official Pokemon app to tease me. I got pissed that it was the first thing on my new phone and the first internet search term. So, you can tell I really don't like it if my dad teases me with it. Thanks for coming here to throw some shade on stuff other people enjoy. But hey, I guess that's just what the Internet's for right? As I said, I never cared for Pokémon, but tried this and it's fun. Come back when you've actually played it and have something constructive to say. Better yet, do us a favor and don't come back to this thread. My home base here. The Pokestop on the right is a water tower that seems to always have a lure on it, even early in the morning. The gym is at a nice little park that I didn't even know was there until I started playing. Looks like it's Valor now but it is highly contested. I've even seen it neutral. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 13, 2016, 08:23:36 PM This right here is what the game is all about for me on a personal level.
A little over a week ago my wife and I were falling into quite a rut of slothiness. I even asked my wife a few times to go for walks and it simply wasn't happening. Since the game has come out we're going venturing into the neighborhood up to three times a night. We usually hit our stops as soon as we get home from work, then after we finish dinner, then one last time before we go to sleep. The weather in Austin has been beautiful lately. I have no qualms that it took a cell-phone game to get me off my butt and back into physical activity. We tried again, and failed again, to win a battle at the gym, but we're just not strong enough yet. A little tip about that if you don't know, multiple people on the same team can enter a battle at once. Just set up your Pokemon, and make sure you hit "GO" at the same time. You'll all deal damage to the same opponent, but he or she will attack you and your crew simultaneously, so if they're a lot more powerful than you (as was the case tonight) you'll still get your butt whooped. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on July 13, 2016, 10:14:31 PM My GPS goes crazy when I am inside but here is my neighborhood
There is another check in directly behind the red gym. Also angle in between those two shots has another several check ins within walking distance couple churches, library, post office and some local land marks. Reds gym is at level 9 blues are only level 4. I went with blue team. Mystic? ARTICUNO!! How do I select a Pokemon as my started for gym battles? Edit Oh yeah I almost forgot. With the help of some other Trainers we encountered on our trip I was able to get my son fully up and running. For some reason the he connected back to my phone's wifi by default instead of running off the data plan. Soon as we got that squared away and launched the game again Pidgie, Caterpie, and Zubat all popped up and were caught after a little struggle since he is still new to most firms of technology believe it or not. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 14, 2016, 10:59:52 PM @Izret I'm sure you figured it out, but when you get to the gym, if it's your team hit the boxing glove icon to fight. If it's the opposing team's gym it'll be two Pokeballs. I think it defaults to whichever Pokemon is at the top of you list but you can change it simply by tapping on it.
Today was a ton of fun. Walked to a Pokestop near work early on a break and a random lady yelled at us "Don't mess with my gym!" So at lunch time we made sure to at least try to f*ck up her gym lol. We lost overall but knocked it down a level. After work my wife and I went to the gym, which was Blue when we got there. No sooner had we started deciding if we were going to fight or not, when the gym turned Red, and a car pulled up and a guy asks "Are you guys Red? I just took the gym and some slots are open. Jump in." Thus, I was in a gym for the first time. It was amazingly short lived however as minutes later another car pulled over and took it back for Blue. Back out at home this evening the Pokestops on my block were lure city. I was out there for almost an hour. Had a Pikachu on my radar but never even got close. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 14, 2016, 11:14:52 PM Did you know that you can start the game with a Pikachu? Basically when you start you have 3 choices of Pokemon. Ignore them and walk away without capturing one. You will walk on them again. Again walk away. Keep doing this and eventually a Pikachu will show up in the group for you to capture.

When this comes out in Canada I will give it a try. I'm 26 and was in the middle of the Pokemon craze, but my interest in faded in the Gameboy Advance era. I guess I stopped caring for the games because they were all too similar and got bored of them. Naturally, because I was the right age I watched the TV show, but only the original series. So now I have zero interest in the franchise (and when I play the games I use the Nuzlocke Challenge rules (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nuzlocke_Challenge)), however I want to try out Pokemon Go. I don't see this as just a kids' thing. I'm sure we'll start seeing Pokemon Go walking tours, people hanging out playing/discussing the game. I think the younger crowd will definitely be hardcore into this but, the older players might find a neat time waster in Pokemon Go being just casual about it. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 15, 2016, 08:40:10 AM That Bunnyhop vid was pretty good (and reminds me, I want to check on my Nintendo stock).
Here in Austin, there already are tours, Pokemon pub crawls, meetups, and people offering to drive players around just to play. During our E3 podcast I had little more than a passing interest in this thing. Now it is a phenomenon that can hardly be described in words on both a personal and public level. Not only do I love the game, but the effect it is having on everyone around me is fascinating. I've seen tons of social media posts about how the game has improved peoples' physical and mental health and I would include myself in that bandwagon as well. I hope you guys get it in Canada. You need to actually play it to see what it's all about. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on July 15, 2016, 03:05:52 PM The game not being officially released in Canada, hasn't prevented most people, from playing it here.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 15, 2016, 03:21:14 PM The game not being officially released in Canada, hasn't prevented most people, from playing it here. But have you? And regardless, people who are older are less likely to spend the time obtaining a non-regional copy. When it comes there, that's when they will get it. My older neighbor plays it, without her kids. Again, just a matter of someone having astute observations on something without visual proof. Geez man really? Give it up, back to your toy thread with ya. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 15, 2016, 03:46:03 PM Taking the kids downtown tonight to do a little hunting. This will be their first experience with Pokestops and gyms, since we live out in the country. Should be a blast! Will report back.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: BJoin1979 on July 15, 2016, 04:31:49 PM I want to play this. I missed out on the original Pokemon boom in 1998. I was busy worrying about college and what I wanted to do. I would like to get in on the excitement this time around. I do not have a phone though. I will have to try it out on my moms phone.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 15, 2016, 04:35:07 PM @BJoin79 You don't have a phone? Thats kind of....awesome.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: bickman2k on July 15, 2016, 04:47:59 PM I'm 32, I do have a kid old enough to play, but I was more excited than he was to play Pokemon Go. I tried to get in the beta. I've played at work with several other guys, both older and younger than myself.
I've only played Pokemon Blue out of the entire series and never played the card game. If you played Ingress, you'd probably like this. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: BJoin1979 on July 15, 2016, 07:42:05 PM @BJoin79 You don't have a phone? Thats kind of....awesome. I would like one I just can not justify the extra expense at this time. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Sirgin on July 15, 2016, 07:59:24 PM I've always been a (casual) Pokémon fan ever since Blue/Red, the original anime series and the original cards. For reference, the most recent Pokémon game I played was Pokémon Black, which is a relatively recent game.
Despite all that, this game doesn't seem interesting to me at all. I haven't even tried it. Okay, I understand the gimmick of walking around catching Pokémon. But the actual game seems so basic. It's like a traditional Pokémon game, except with just about everything stripped out of it. I don't know. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 15, 2016, 08:03:30 PM It's free so I'd advise trying it. Actually a lot of fun. It's a lot more about the community aspect then the gameplay. Very social and so nice to just be around people who are happy with all the bad stuff going on in the world.

Ran into some server issues but we ended up walking to a little diner and grabbing bfast and roaming a bit around town anyways. Tried playing at the bar tonight. It is a deadzone. I left it running for ~5 hours and nothing showed up in my vicinity. Doing the same thing at home i get a garbage pokemon a few times an hour. A Bulbasaur and Eggsecute were nearby but unfortunately i could not leave my customers to roam around the hood. Got home and the gym across the street from my house jumped from a level 4 to a level 7. Checked out what was in there and the first leader is a friend of my brothers... I know this because he used the same name he had on Xbox Live which is a play on his name. Tried to knock it down solo and made it to the final leader barely. I really only have one strong Pokemon Vaporeon 523 next strongest is a Golbat at 356 and then they start nosediving into the upper 100s. Anyone know offhand if Eevee evolution is random? Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Fleach on July 17, 2016, 07:32:19 AM Anyone know offhand if Eevee evolution is random? http://www.polygon.com/pokemon-go/2016/7/16/12205402/pokemon-go-eevee-evolution Apparently not. There seems to be a trick behind getting Eevee to evolve. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 17, 2016, 08:20:17 AM Never seen this report, but I've heard other reports about Evee evolution and how it depends on their specific attack.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on July 17, 2016, 10:24:07 AM I've got to agree with the comments on that article.
Also saw things about certain pokemon showing up at certain times and locations doesn't seem really accurate. I've caught water pokemon when i wasn't near water, i've caught Ghastly during the day and near no cemeteries(in fact there is one near me now), despite us being ~90+ and full sun i have not seen any fire pokemon. I think it is 100% random with certain ones having much lower odds than others and there appears to be a level barrier on most of them. As i have leveled i have begun to see more different types. I've had Pinsir, Exeggcute, Bulbasaur(!), Hypno, Poliwag, Seel, Staryu, Abra, Tentacool, Rhyhorn and Pidgeot all in my vicinity but wasn't able to go out and hunt them down. So far i've gotten Goldeen, Drowzee and Vulpix from a 5km egg and Clefairy from a 2km. There also appear to be deadzones i was dead stop gridlocked on the highway friday night and none appeared. I've been told from people who go "caravaning" that once you get over 20MPH nothing shows up, and the bar as i mentioned before was dead for me. I think that might be a combination of the water department and train tracks near by. But since other municipal buildings are apparently pokestops or gyms that might not be 100% accurate either and i just had bad luck. Weird, but whatever, I've got the app. I think I'm going to go with Squirtel because he was my go-to when I had Pokemon Blue back in the late 90s.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on July 17, 2016, 05:48:10 PM I downloaded the app today. I am at work, and my work is in a heavily industrialized part of my city. Despite that, I still managed to catch two pokemon. The whole time I walked around, i hoped I would capture some kind of ancient demon, like Azazeal or pazuzu. Maybe someday they will make a Shin Megami Tensai GO. Now THAT I could really get into.

Ended up walking about 10km tonight after work... Something i would have never done otherwise. Grabbed some food on the way home and hit some of the places i knew were stops. One of them was a Post office. I got out and tried to socialize with the guy there but he closed out the game and immediately said he wasn't playing pokemon. I laughed caught a few since there was a lure on the post office. And left about 5 minutes later when it ran out. He was still hanging out at the post office by himself at 11pm alone.... not playing Pokemon. Finally found that Pinsir(526cp my new best!) i missed yesterday morning with my son. Someone who was caravaning around hollered "PINSIR!" and the drivers sat thru the a light change from red to green to red while all their passengers caught it. There was no one on the road tonight besides Hunters i loled every time a car full drove by. I ended up using a lure at one stop where i could make a round trip between two other near by stops if i ambled. It drew about a dozen people. I ended up burning thru a few hundred pokeballs tonight so i'm glad there are so many stops near me (compared to other places. I know some places are absolutely littered with them) One ended up approaching me on one of my return trips and asked what team i was on. "Mystic. It is always the wrong one." He chuckled said he was on Instinct offered me some pot which i declined (and then he realized he lost it while biking around) and gave me some pointers.* Also managed to nab a low level Venomoth after about a dozen pokeballs(the first one i saw was ~400cp i used dozens of pokeballs and several berries before it fled >:( ), a Pidgeot, Magikarp and a Jigglypuff. Also hatched a Voltorb and a Cubone for other new additions. I think that is it for new ones. Sitting at 37/150 I could evolve a few to fill out my Pokedex but i am holding out for higher CP starter pokemon. I caught a 180cp Pidgey, 79cp Pidgeotto and 254cp Pidgeot. So if i evolve the Pidgey it should end up at 700+cp assuming the "it roughly doubles when you evolve" thing i was told is true. *Pointers Under 20MPH and all distances traveled should count for egg hatching. Over the counter stops. Catch and evolve everything to level faster. (I catch but hold out on evolution. Though i have been sending all my weaker dupes to professor willow who kills them and turns them into candies to evolve the ones i keep.) Save items for when new pokemon or good ones are "in range". Capitalize on others putting lures into stops(duh) Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on July 18, 2016, 09:48:35 AM So, I busted this thing open, full bore yesterday. Went for a walk after I got home from work yesterday. I would have to say the ONLY thing I like about this game, is the fact that is uses GPS + two feet and a heartbeat, but also the whole random encounter aspect. This feels like an RPG of sorts, that you can be walking around and BOOM! Monster. The problem I will always have is the Pokemon themselves. Give me something cooler! I am a horror movie guy. Give me a game where I can hunt horror movie monsters, or demons or something. Other than that, I would say Pokemon Go, is solid enough.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on July 18, 2016, 09:55:01 AM I'm sure something else will come out of this now that is like that. But since that isn't what Pokemon is (there are technically ones based on monsters and demons tho) don't expect anything creepy or gory from them.
Somewhat related: My aunt immediately let me know she was playing Chardonnay Go! Which means she downloaded it to be edgy and isn't actually doing anything other than being like Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on July 18, 2016, 11:43:48 AM I meant to bring up Chardonnay Go.

On that Pokemon rarity chart...are you stuck with the Special Pokemon that you initially catch? Kinda like how you were stuck with Charmander if you got Red back in the day? Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 18, 2016, 02:50:03 PM Just got it today. And for the record, I'm 'old' with no kids...so are 4 of my friends that are playing. On that Pokemon rarity chart...are you stuck with the Special Pokemon that you initially catch? Kinda like how you were stuck with Charmander if you got Red back in the day? In terms of stuck, do you mean that you can't catch the others that appear at the start up? If so, I can say that it is not the case. I went with Charmander and have a Bulbasaur and Squirtle already. My son caught the starting Pikachu using the skip trick last night. Wow, words I thought would never come out of my mouth....... Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on July 18, 2016, 03:19:48 PM I haven't encountered them yet but I have been near all the starters barring Charmander who I picked.
Also that rarity chart isn't the most accurate thing. Probably over 200 people out running around downtown and lounging in the park under its Pokestops. We had a great time!

Psyduck, Poliwag, Seel, Hypno, Staryu, Dratini, Omanyte and a Gyarados. It seemed like 1/4 of the people there were playing. My childhood dream of being a Pokemon trainer has been (partially) fulfilled. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Izret101 on July 18, 2016, 09:58:14 PM I nabbed a Ponyta next to the church/bakery stop a couple blocks from me on the way home and a Seel in a Verizon/Golden Corral parking lot... Also on the way home.
Also got another Eevee. Mankeys are now showing up for me too as there was one in my vicinity. I DEFINITELY think there pokemon are level locked. The higher your level the more you see. The strange thing is most of the times when a new one pops up for me it isn't on the step radar. Outside of my first nigth walking around with Rowan i typically don't find the ones on radar outside of the ultracommons which could just have been coincidence. I hatched an Electabuzz from a 10k egg, a Horsea from a 5k egg (already had one), and knocked off ~1km on my next 2 eggs. Caught a few more Eevees. I only need Jolteon evolution but i will likely keep catching Eevees after i get the final one anyways. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: singlebanana on July 22, 2016, 06:53:48 AM Yeah, definitely not a game for cool people. Sorry you don't fit it the demographic of our sadness, but hey, thanks for stopping by to share your YouTube comments.
Seeing that it wasn't clear from the beginning that this was a thread for people who are "actually playing" the app and enjoying it, I decided to change the name of the thread to clarify and help guide you. It's really sad to me that some feel the need to tear down something other people enjoy for what ever reason. If you don't like it fine, (whether you actually tried it or not) just do your fellow members a favor and keep it to yourself and move on. One thing that I mentioned while recording the other night is how nice it has been to see the joy on peoples' faces (people from all races, sexes, creeds, and ages) in light off the horrible social climate that has more recently risen in our nation. I'm not saying that this app is somehow saving our country (that is ridiculous of course), I'm just saying that it's nice to see people out with something in common enjoying time together and talking. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread Post by: Fleach on July 22, 2016, 07:27:46 AM I hatched an egg yesterday and got a Cubone. There's very little to do before level 5 and being in a very suburban area doesn't really help. Hopefully this weekend I can go downtown and see what Pokestops and critters I can find.
I've tried to cheat the game a few times by driving my car to hatch that egg faster, but that doesn't work. The game knows can track your speed and if it's over 20mph it won't increase your distance for egg hatching. Maybe Rich has mentioned something about already but there's a special Pokemon Go surprise coming soon! Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: singlebanana on July 22, 2016, 07:41:51 AM Yeah Floyd, as you and I discussed privately, I feel your pain in terms of living in a suburb. My great reprieve is that I work in the big city and that is truly where all of the fun is with this game. I do hope that you make this trip into the city and get the full experience with this app. I think you will have a little bit better understanding of what a lot of the buzz is about.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: GrayGhost81 on July 22, 2016, 08:33:08 AM I leave it on when I'm driving anyway. You do get some mileage, just not a lot.
Having said that, don't Pokemon and drive! Spent some time by a lure last night, the guy who dropped it was playing music and trying to create a party atmosphere. It was really awesome, although it was over 100 degrees yesterday and my phone was overheating so I couldn't see shit. Plus, there was a Ponyta on my radar for quite a while but it never popped up. Plus it dawned on me last night that Ekans is Snake backwards. LOL 🐍 Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on July 22, 2016, 08:56:46 AM Just think - its evolution Arbok is Kobra spelled backwards. :D

I was at a party at a bar that was across the street from a Pokestop, but close enough to access it, and it was lured for a good amount of the time that I was there. Then we went to dinner at a restaurant that was a Pokestop itself, and it was lured much of the time we were there as well.
My wife and I finally caught Ponytas, and she hatched a Magmar, which I'm pretty jealous of. I ended up hitting my item capacity and had to discard 30 Razz Berries (I had over 60). I forgot to post this but last weekend was the first time I actually ran out of Pokeballs. It was the worst feeling, don't let it happen to you! Now, when I'm getting low, I don't even try for the low level guys like Ratatas etc. Last thing I'll say here, has anyone else noticed that Pokemon will escape the ball more often? I have no evidence for this, but I wonder if the game has been adjusted so that more balls are used as a way to encourage the microtransactions. :tinfoil: Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: singlebanana on July 24, 2016, 11:57:12 AM I think that the chance of escape goes up the higher the level you reach and after you get razz berries. As you probably know, more high level Pokémon start to appear the higher level you reach. The chance of even capturing the more common Pokemon gets lower. The save balls, use razz berries and make sure you wait for the ring to shrink down before you throw. I try to catch any Pokemon to help raise experience and even evolve them as often as I can to level.

They're not gonna catch themselves, you know. BTW after a little pondering, I realized a VERY big upside to this Pokeymans phenomenon: it's one of the biggest mass-distractions in recent memory. They bought us all Fitbits a few months ago and we have weekly team contests (we all hate the girl who was a runner in college...ha ha). But yeah, the Fitbit in combination with Pokémon GO has been great for me. The wife has noticed the weightloss and I feel better. More tired in the evenings, but my sleep is definitely better. I'd encourage anyone interested in using this app as a motivation tool to go out and get the cheapest Fitbit Flex, which can be had for under $100. It actually tracks a ton of stuff for the price (just doesn't have the clock face). Well worth the price for your health.

Expect it to get pulled quickly. Pokevision and related sites were all shutdown for what i would see as a much smaller offense. While card shopping we each caught a Psyduck. Nothing really out of the norm otherwise. It's typically not the style of members on this site, so yeah, I'm a bit perplexed. However, I apologize if anyone thinks I've been overly rude to them. Not my intent, but again, my responses have come more out of frustration. I don't expect everyone to like this game, no game has ever had a 100% success rate (except maybe Clu Clu Land...). I just want to discuss it with others who are enjoying it in a friendly environment. Not too much to ask IMO.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: singlebanana on August 03, 2016, 11:48:15 AM Shawn and I mentioned during the podcast that he and I went Team Valor when we hit Level 5. I'm curious about what team others joined and why? And, what is your team's presence in the community?
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 03, 2016, 01:29:47 PM @banana - While it might not be the style of most members on this site (and this site is probably the friendliest, calmest, nicest, etc. place on the web), it is still a message board on the internet and unfortunately, there is nothing RFGen can do to save itself from that. (Unless Trump wins and builds that internet wall)
Anyway, I joined Mystic. No real reason why. I don't remember the exact descriptions of what each team was about, but in my head Mystic seemed more 'mind/mental' orientated, which I like. Valor seemed physical and Instinct seemed Speed or Special based. Maybe that's just the role those colors play in my head though...who knows. As for presence in my community...I guess it's pretty even? I play on my wifi-only phone so I'm missing a lot of area, but I know of 3 Gym's and each team controls one. PS- Sour news...I know a Clu-Clu Land hater. I tried to tell him he's wack, but he wouldn't listen. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: singlebanana on August 03, 2016, 01:45:01 PM Interesting.... Yeah, I remember reading over the descriptions of the teams and pretty much choosing based on color and a bad@## girl being the leader. Ha! It's funny but you can go on reddit and there are groups for each team and it appears that they all have a specific mantra they follow. In my area, Mystic and Valor seem to be the most common and aggressive, running basically all of the gyms. I've seem maybe two gyms that were Instinct and those were in the nearby smaller town. It's funny how these teams evolve and sort of take on a persona of their own. Interested to hear from others.

Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Izret101 on August 03, 2016, 09:00:22 PM Valor had a heavy presence in my area initially.
Mystic has everything around me now. I went Mystic based on Articuno. Of the legendary birds it was the one i used most. Valor was a close second for their mantra. It always seemed strange that pokemon had all these powers and somehow humans controlled them. I let my son be the deciding factor and he also went Mystic. After the fact i learned all my family went Mystic and everyone else i know went Valor. As for the teams i've heard some stories and it can be quite cliquey. Not quite as bad as crips vs bloods vs latin kings. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: GrayGhost81 on August 05, 2016, 10:18:34 PM I had some fun on Tuesday night while at a baseball game. Two pokestops close and lures on the much of the time. I got my first Machop.
But I haven't played since then. In the most recent update it seems my suspicions earlier have come true. Escapes/runaways have increased drastically, no doubt about it. That combined with the radar being almost completely gone now, and the game sadly is holding little appeal for me. I'd love to see some numbers of active users now versus the "good old days" of the first two weeks on the game. I still see people on the internet talking about the game, but a lot of them are complaining about the things I just did, or bragging about cheating and then getting roasted by non-cheaters. Was all this too good to be true? Can Niantic turn this around? Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 06, 2016, 06:31:42 AM I've had a few Pidgey's escape. They should be automatic. I've also misfired on a few Pidgey's and Rattata's because they jump around more than they had in the past. I can almost guarantee that the number of active users have been cut by 1/3 since it's debut. I think there were a segment of people who don't play video games who tried it for a week.
I'm still playing at the same rate I have been, but that's not saying much - about five or six 30 second bursts per day. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on August 06, 2016, 08:16:18 AM From what I understand, at least about the Pidgeys, is that your higher level is making it harder to catch the lower level Pokemon.

Yes, we've dicussed that before, however I have been level 13 or 14 for a very long time now and noticed a drastic change. Unless once you hit level 14 the game is jacked, something is up. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on August 06, 2016, 12:06:40 PM I have only been playing this thing very casually. (Catch endless pidgey, rattata, weedle, caterpie, use XP egg, evolve countless times) I was invite to an event at one of the big parks here today but passed on it. Apparently a ton of people are meeting up BBQing, dropping lures at all the stops and gym battling to grind XP. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: GrayGhost81 on August 06, 2016, 09:19:50 PM https://youtu.be/6-RerthVB54 That's hilarious! So I went to another anime convention today and everyone there seemed to be way more into PoGO than at the last one. I even went to a Pokemon GO meetup. Also there actually was a Pokestop in the lobby of the hotel this time, and it was lured most of the time. However, I felt like I was only playing because everyone else was. The same problems still persist. Although I did get a Meowth, I mostly still only saw, say it with me, PIDGIES AND RATTATAS. And when trying to catch an nice looking Eevee, I wasted five masterballs on it before it ran away. I don't know, I don't want to keep being super negative (this thread is for non-haters after all). Today was definitely a nice flashback to the good old days. I'm just so disappointed with how the game is now. I'm going back to this convention tomorrow and I'm going to try be the very best. There's another meet up and I'm actually going to bring a charger so I can stay juiced up. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Izret101 on August 08, 2016, 07:28:34 AM I went on an evolution spree yesterday. I had saved up enough candies to evolve 40-50 pokemon.
Only a handful were new evolutions; Nidorina, Nidorino, Gloom, Weepinbell, Haunter. Also caught a Jynx, Squirtle and hatched a Sandshrew. Think that is it for new ones. For some reason my Psyduck disappeared, Pokedex shows i have seen one but he is MIA and greyed out. At 61 caught 63 seen. Thanks to the evolution spree i skyrocketed to level 17. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 08, 2016, 09:07:32 AM After playing sparingly for the first few weeks, my interest has spiked. Probably because I'm finally seeing new Pokemon. I started doing loser laps in my car (driving at a SAFE 5-10 MPH down a very quiet road) on my way home from work to nab 6 Pokestops.
From what I understand, at least about the Pidgeys, is that your higher level is making it harder to catch the lower level Pokemon. I'm at level 8. I just wasted a Razz Berry and 6 Pokeballs on a Pidgey. I am not made of Pokeballs.I think they are becoming harder to catch for everyone. IMO, there is no way a Pidgey, Weedle, or Rattata should ever break free. They should be automatic for everyone and it defies logic that they are harder to catch if your level is high. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: singlebanana on August 08, 2016, 12:03:39 PM I'm still playing, though I have noticed a steady decrease in the amount of people I see going around playing it. I agree that a lack of variety in Pokémon available in an area and the increase in escape rate is frustrating.
However, I took my soon to a nearby small town yesterday to Pokémon hunt and get some ice cream, and he had a blast. He hit level 10 and grabbed a few new Pokémon, including a new one for me, Rhydon. I'm now at 79 caught and 80 seen (still haven't managed to grab a Tentacool I missed on Day 1). During our venture, I also defeated a Blastoise and took over my first gym. It stayed up for a solid hour until taken down. It was fun, but don't know that I received anything for my efforts. Question: When your team has a gym, how do you join in protecting it and increasing the level? Good news is that we are headed to the beach for a week soon. My son and I CANNOT WAIT to catch more water creatures and see what other goodies we can catch there! Still having fun with it as a casual player and understand why it's waning off. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 08, 2016, 03:18:45 PM @Banana - I think your gym needs to have an open slot (an unfilled circle) next to the crown for you to join in protecting it. If there are no slots, your gym needs more prestige and a new slot will appear. I think it's level increases if your team wins battles. I think this was the site I read, but if it's not in there, it's still a good site to read.

Just wanna throw out that the music is really, really good. The main theme, the tune when you get a new pokemon, the battle song, the gym music. I'm not sure if any of these songs are recycled from older Pokemon games, but Junichi Masuda (who composed the older games as well) has done great work with this game.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: singlebanana on August 11, 2016, 09:22:22 AM Funny you say that. I was just thinking yesterday about how I never get tired of the music. I have the game on and walk to it every day and it's never grated on me like some music does. I'm still playing. Hatched a Magnemite yesterday, which my kids flipped out about.
I think a lot of the loss is due to repeatedly catching the same 4-5 Pokémon. I think they need to switch up the more Commons soon so that people can work on evolving other species. Some of them are a bit too rare and evolution s too slow moving. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: The Last Zinja on August 11, 2016, 09:47:50 AM I've been playing this and the amount of Pidgies and Ratattas I have caught is disturbing. The music is pretty good. I'm lucky to have a gym right next to my house.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 11, 2016, 10:33:20 AM I don't mind Weedles, Ratattas and Pidgies anymore because I need Stardust badly. I'm also saving up the candies like some of you mentioned earlier so I can pop a Lucky Egg and do a few evolutions for easy EXP.
I agree somewhat about some Pokemon not showing up in their natural habitat, like Geodudes near rock quarries. But I basically live on a peninsula, a bay 1 mile north of me, a canal a 1/2 mile east of me, and the Atlantic Ocean about 5 miles south of me. I am catching Water pokemon like nobody's business. The canal a 1/2 mile from my house is my local Pokestop/Gym hotspot that I visit daily. When I am there my sightings are usually Staryus, Goldeens, Poliwags, Magikarps, Crabbys, etc. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on August 11, 2016, 11:47:12 AM I have a rock/clay quarry 1/2 mile, a lake 1/4 mile, a forest right behind my house... And, nothing of interest can be caught. I looked at the map before it was taken down, and there were only 3 Pokemon in my area, all commons and in front of a particular person's house. It doesn't help when you don't have much GPS data to go off. :D

I just got an Omanlyte from a 10K egg. It is Rock/Wter. Electric deals X2 damage to Water and normal damage to Rock. So is an Electric attack dealing 2X damage to Omanlyte or normal damage or something in between? 2X. Normal damage match ups basically don't modify the damage taken. If it's x2 or x.5 then it does. Also there is a same type attack bonus or STAB. If the Pokemon's typing and attack typing match, it adds %50 more base damage. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 12, 2016, 02:39:11 PM @Izret - Go does not use the same breakdown (not the same as Blue at least). I printed a cheatsheet from this site https://www.vg247.com/2016/07/27/pokemon-go-battle-type-strengths-and-weaknesses-explained/ but it seems to freeze a lot so beware.
@Fleebitten - I didn't mean Normal damage, I meant regular damage. But yes, I found out the hard way that having a dual-type Pokemon seems to be a bad thing. In my Omanyte's case (Rock/Water), an Electric attack will deal x2 to Omanyte because it's Water, even though Electric would deal regular damage to Rock. It ignores the Rock in this case. So, a Ground attack deals X2 to Poison and X1/2 to Grass. If you have a Vileplume/Gloom/Oddish (Poison/Grass type), a Ground attack will deal X2 to it, not X1/2. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: MaterialHandlerMike on August 14, 2016, 10:29:54 PM I turned the music off on Day 1.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: singlebanana on August 22, 2016, 10:59:07 AM Well, I just got back from the beach where I spent a week. I was hoping for some good Pokémon hunting and especially excited about coming across more of the water/sea creatures like Horseas, Crabbys, Staryus, etc. Unfortunately, I didn't find this to be the case at all and mostly got more of the same common Pokémon that I'm finding at home.... However, on returning to work today, a co-worker went to a different beach and had good luck finding Magnemites, so many that he was able to evolve one. Kind of odd, but the beach he went to is far more touristy, and the one my family vacations at is much more quiet. Perhaps that's the reason. Who knows? I'm not sure that the logic I'm using concerning Pokémon locations (and heard that the creators used) is actually valid. It's quite a shame, since it would make the game far more interesting and compel people to head to certain locals in search of certain ones. Oh well...
On a brighter note, I was able to catch quite a few new Pokémon on my trip even though I didn't spend a considerable about playing (beach time > Pokémon, for me). Here's a short list: Tentacool - I missed this Pokémon on my first day playing this game and finally captured one while we were having breakfast at a restaurant on a local pier. It was the only one I had seen and not caught in my Pokedex, so I was really happy to have it. Of course, when I got home this Saturday, I caught another one on my couch...figures. Vulpix - My son got a slinter in his toe on the boardwalk and had to be carried to our house to get it out. While on the way, he spotted a Vulpix, which I figured was probably near a local Pokestop. I dropped him off and duel wielded 2 phones to catch it for both of us. Made him feel a little better. Seaking (evolved) - Heading to pick up food one night with my daughter, I hatched a 5K egg with a Goldeen. Hatched eggs even with more common Pokémon are pretty great since they usually give you about 25 candies for that species as well. That was enough to finally evolve my Seaking. Arbok (evolved) - Another egg hatched from walking along the beach. Was able to evolve my Ekans, which was nice. Love the look of this Pokémon; my son loves its action. Tauros - Was finally able to track down this NA only Pokémon. Had gone out with my daughter to pick up food and my son refused to go. Turned my phone on after picking up the food and it popped up immediately in the parking lot! Showed my son when I got home and made him cry. Take that kid! Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on August 22, 2016, 11:12:00 AM It collects GPS usage, so the touristy beach likely had more GPS data to go off and therefore more Pokemon options to generate. I've mentioned it before, but we don't have a large number of people where I live, so I get basically nothing except for the shopping centers.
Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 23, 2016, 10:30:20 AM Good stuff, Banana & Son!
My town is small as well. I don't know what it's like in a city, but I'd say a Pokemon will spawn once every 10-15 minutes for me. Aside from the commoners, I'm still catching 90% water Pokemon.....Tentacools (so many that Tentacruel is my strongest Pokemon), Slowpokes, Poliwags, Psyducks, Magikarps, etc. I have NEVER seen a fire or rock Pokemon in the wild. Call it an excuse to play this game, but there is no denying that I am outdoors more and getting more exercise because of it. I'm taking my dogs for longer walks, I've started long boarding again and because of it I am feeling tiny underutilized muscles in my back and legs come back to life. I did not listen to the Pokemon Go playcast, so I hope I'm not redundant, but I have figured out a few tips recently... - It's all about the eggs. If you've saved up enough "10 cents" from Gym raids, I'd spend the 150 on Egg Incubators. You get roughly 10-30 candy from a 5k or 10k egg. You're simply not finding that candy in the wild faster than you can hatch an egg, especially from the rarer ones. - Move set > CP/HP. If you want a strong Pokemon, I believe his move set is far more important than his HP or CP. In general, for the secondary move, the moves that are one long bar are the best. 4 or 5 small blue bars are the worst. Ever fight a Vaporeon and he kills you with one hit? That's because he used Hydro Pump (a one long bar move). - Lucky Egg + evolutions are the best XP gainer. Last week, I had about 180 Weedle candy, 140 Pidgey, and some other evolves to do. I got over 40,000 XP with one egg. - Sites like Silph Road and Rankedboost have some good info. Silph Road has a great tool (IV rater) to let you know how strong your Pokemon REALLY is. Rankedboost seems to have the best handle on which attacks and Pokemon are best, with many hidden stats included. I'm sure lots of new apps have similar fates. The number is seemingly big, but I bet it's similar to what a lot of apps lose percentage wise after a month. Still, I see it continuing to lose users, but everyone I know in my area who was playing it, still is. They will certainly have to implement more updates and additions to the game. Speaking of implementations, did any one notice the new "Appraise" feature. This tells me that head-to-head battles are probably around the corner. May just be wishful thinking though. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: The Last Zinja on August 25, 2016, 12:00:09 PM I noticed the new Appraise feature yesterday and got excited, only to be disappointed by the news that all of my Pokémon suck.

Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 26, 2016, 12:09:47 PM Noticed the appraise feature right away. Don't think it adds much. It eliminates having to go to a website to see how good your pokemon are, although some websites (silph road in particular) gives a more accurate reading. Long story short, if you hatch a pokemon from an egg, it'll be awesome. If you catch it in the wild it is likely to be average...maybe even below average. I don't know if this is breaking news, but I've just figured out you can spin your pokeball before throwing it (you'll see sparks and stars) to get a curveball every time. When you throw it, the physics are similar to spinning a ball in bowling (not that I can do that). Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Izret101 on August 26, 2016, 12:53:51 PM Yea spinning before throwing is easier than trying to perform the hookshot all on its own.
Sometimes you can get it to curve up to down rather than side to middle but i never got it to happen reliably. Also the rumor that a curveball is an autocatch is rubbish. I don't think anything is an autocatch. Not even a Razzberry + Ultra Ball + Green Ring + Excellent throw is 100%, although I think the latter factors help a little.Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: JerryGreenwood on August 29, 2016, 01:29:03 PM Pokemon Go will be updating again soon.
Features to look for are - Friends Lists, Leaderboards, Trading (later in the year), Events, PvP, an update to PokeStops, and Pokemon Centers (players will be able to transform PokeStops into PokeCenters where you Pokemon can heal and perform other unannounced actions. I don't care what that Bloomberg article says, the numbers are misleading anyway. Here's what matters - Pokemon Go will be the highest grossing game of the year. Title: Re: Pokemon GO Discussion Thread for Non-Haters Post by: Wempster on November 20, 2022, 11:01:48 AM My wife and I play everyday. Sometimes it's only catch a few and spin a stop, but we still play.
