Title: Virtual content hits consoles. Way of the future?
Post by: phoenix1967 on June 09, 2005, 09:17:34 PM
Check this out:

Why do I get the feeling that the ability for gamers to do this is a bad idea? Maybe because someone got murdered over such a thing in Asia? WTF.

I say that it's one thing for the publisher of a game to make DLC available for online subscribers, but it's crossing the line to allow gamers to sell virtual content they've obtained from a game to another gamer. It just seems wierd.

Anyone ever buy or sell customized virtual content?

Yeah, it all started back in the day with Ultima Online, when eBay was just getting popular...I thought it was against eBay policy to sell these items nowadays.  I guess with the right wording, you can get away with selling almost anything on eBay. ;)

They sell online accounts for all types of games on ebay.

And remember that guy who bought the massive virtual island?

Never heard of that...do virtual items sell for a lot of $$ nowadays?  Back when I played UO, accounts were being sold for 500-1000+ dollars.  I remember my bro selling a placed house for 200 dollars and a bunch of items for 10-50 dollars each.  Easy money ;)

When I was into wargaming, I hired  a unit of mercenaries from my friend at school for a campaign, they were just stats on a page. LOL

I'm wondering if all the "customization" buzz going around regarding the next-gen of consoles, we'll be seeing this much more heavily.

Im pretty sure it is still against eBay policy to sell virtual content.  However, there is nothing wrong with selling the rights to purchase it in game.  You can also auction off a meeting spot where the transaction will take place.
