Title: NES Games from Israel?
Post by: Shepy on December 14, 2015, 05:51:17 PM
In the database, there is a handful of NES games that say they were released in Israel. I've scoured the internet and can't find any reference to the NES in Israel.  Can someone point me in the right direction? Or is this just an error?

It's not an error...

Figure out the following codes then and get back to me...
DAS
FRG
NOE
GPS

I know one of them. But is it just a quiz for Project Nintendo?

Best I understand it...

DAS - Deutschland Austria Switzerland??
FRG - Federal Republic of Germany
NOE - Nintendo of Europe
GPS - Germany, Portugal, Spain?

NOE was the one I knew.

And that's what I would have guessed for DAS. :-)

Is the G in GPS Germant or Greece?

The G in GPS is not Germany. Is it Great Britain, or Greece?

From what I understand GPS was used toward the end of the NES life cycle in quite a few European countries. I think what it stands for is just speculatoin.

Is it? Because while it was provided for low-print runs, it certainly had Portuguese and Spanish manuals, but the other language was English...
EDIT: Right, and as you mentioned, it shouldn't be Great Britain because it's PAL A, not PAL B...

Yes, it's Game Pak Software. :D
Makes sense for the Software, but not the manuals. Those were just arbitrary Part #s where the distributor decided the languages in the manuals, or provided their own, and the default was English. I'm pretty sure it was for first-party print runs under 10,000 (I saw a quote once that mentioned 9000 copies of a particular game were ordered), but it may be just 5k.

FRG is meant to be for West Germany, as it was considered to be the Federal Republic of Germany until unification in October 1990. NOE is based in Germany, and since FRG was a reference to Germany pre-unification, they swapped to using NOE.

...isn't Nintendo fun?

...It gets better. Schlibby could write a book on GBR, British FRA carts, and EEC/* matches.

Oh, America. Shall we go over the -LTN, -MSA, and multi-language releases that were never labeled properly? :D

I still need to review all the Mattel games listed as UK. Doesn't look like Mattel actually released anything here except the earliest black boxes. They did however have a habit of adding GBR onto their Italian and Australian carts and/or manuals and/or boxes...

There's also FRA (with EAI on the back and a PAL A lockout chip) under the PAL A category. No one seems to know why they did that. Most people incorrectly assume they work in French and PAL A consoles (which they don't cus of the lockout chip)

They're EEC cartridges.

GBR is also found in Italy.
DAS = Germany, Austria, Switzerland

EAI = English and Italian (UK and Italy)

Updated the list. Everything look correct now?

EAI is England, Australia and Italy (eg pal a).

The PAL A FRA cart shouldn't have France next to it on your list. See my point above about having a pal a lockout chip :-)

GBR is the code Mattel used (Nintendo used UKV). Mattel only sold a few early black box games in the UK but that means there are a few British GBR carts. Then as we've said the rest of the GBRs are either Italian or Australian where Mattel distributed for much longer but seemed to get geographically confused

@Schlibby - EAI's used on N64 for English and Italian. No Australia, as Australia had its own at that point, but yeah it was Australia on the NES. Love how they recycle the usage. :D
