Title: NES cartridge manufactured by Virgin Games
Post by: Speedy_NES on May 21, 2005, 05:54:21 AM
Does anyone else have a licensed NES game where the cartridge was not manufactured by Nintendo themselves?

I just stumbled across a licensed cartridge manufactured by Virgin Games for the Overlord NES game.  Not only does it make it clear in the engraved box on the lower back of the cartridge, but the "battery-packed" sticker on the back is grey instead of gold, and the wording differs from the common "battery-packed" message (although it is similar to the USA/CAN "battery-packed" stickers, yet missing the French part and, of course, it's grey and not gold).  Also, the back of the cartridge is much more of a brown color, whereas the front half is the same as all other licensed NES cartridges.  Unfortunately I don't have the tools to open up the cartridge to check out the inside. :/

I checked all of my other Virgin Games cartridges, and they were all manufactured by Nintendo.

More carts of mine manufactured by licensed companies other than Nintendo:

Acclaim (Terminator 2, Incredible Crash Dummies, & George Foreman's KO Boxing):

Hi-Tech Expressions (Mickey's Safari in Letterland):

The different companies seem to use labels that slightly vary from one another, so that could explain why the battery-packed label from Overlord differed from the others.  I'm surprised I never noticed any of this earlier ;)

Wasn't Tetris by Tengen like this? Or was that something slightly different.

You mean like these?

All of the American Video Entertainment (aka AVE) games and Color Dreams games were like that.
Same goes for Camerica NES games.

No, I'm aware of all of the unlicensed game cartridges.  I meant licensed game cartridges manufactured by companies other than Nintendo, rather than by Nintendo themselves.  I should have mentioned that in the initial post ;)  I'll scan the carts later tonight or tomorrow & post them here for you guys to see.

P.S. I edited the word "licensed" into my initial post...should've done that in the first place ;)

Ok, here are some pics of what I meant:

Pic of cartridge that 99% of NES games have (manufactured by Nintendo; this one has batteries, hence the golden label):

Pic of cartridge manufactured by Virgin Games (contains batteries but has a grey label):

Pic of cartridge manufactured by Acclaim:

Pic of cartridge manufactured by Hi-Tech Expressions:

They all have varying back labels, and the color of the back half of the cartridge is much more brownish than that of their front half.  I don't understand why it's only the back half that seems to be manufactured by these companies.  If anyone has a copy of the following games with a cartridge manufactured by Nintendo, let me know:

George Foreman's KO Boxing
Incredible Crash Dummies
Mickey Mousecapade
Overlord
Terminator 2

That's a nice auction by the way ;)  Although it's not the type of cartridge that I'm talking about, because it's an unlicensed one.  The carts that I came across are licensed cartridges manufactured by companies that received licenses from Nintendo.

I tried to place the images inside the last post of mine, but it didn't seem to work so I just linked them instead.  If anyone knows what could've gone wrong, lemme know...If I could get them visible in that post then it would be easier to see what I'm talking about. ;)

Codemasters, actively try and stop emulation of their stuff, and they released their own shit for most consoles.. That's what I thought you meant.

Yea, it's tough to accurately explain what I meant in words...that's where the pics come in ;)  I'll add more links to them in my initial post.

By the way THX...since you live in England, would you say that the plug-thru versions of Codemasters' games for the NES are more rare than the black cartridge versions?  Or the other way around? I used to think the plug-thrus were more rare, but they seem to be much more abundant on the UK eBay than the black cart versions...

Spedy, to add an image in a post, the code should look like this:

{img}http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y203/Speedy_NES/NintendoCartridge-withb attery-packedlabel.jpg {/img}

The only difference is you need to replace the { and } with [ and ].

Thanks, it works now!  I did try that the first time, but I guess something went wrong with the copy & pasting ;)
