Uh yeah, we all pretty much borked that one. Except me, but I played a month before everybody else. Many had problems with the battle system, and I missed the messages before I could say "Mix jump attacks in with your combos". I was hardly ever touched that way. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Ikariniku on May 31, 2015, 04:16:24 PM I thought it was June 1 today, so I logged some serious Mega Man 2 time today. I hope no one minds if I talk about it.
I started the day playing Mega Man 2 on the PS2 Mega Man Anniversary Collection. I didn't like the emulation very much. The sound mix, especially, bothered me. And I couldn't really get used to using the PS2 controller. So, I took a picture of my password with my phone and played on my Retron 5 whose emulation I quite like. No save states were used. However, they were hardly necessary. When I play Mega Man 2, I always hit a wall at Air Man, who I tackle third. I beat my head against Air Man unsuccessfully for a while on the Retron, but then I wanted to watch something on my HDTV, so I switched to original hardware on a good ol' CRT. Well, an AV Famicom with an adapter, but still. Maybe the Retro Gaming Spirits looked favorably on my setup, because very soon after starting up, I was past Air Man and chewing up the robot masters. WIth only Bubble Man and Heat Man between me and Wily, I realized my date confusion and decided to wait until tomorrow before plunging ahead any further. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: shaggy on May 31, 2015, 06:51:34 PM I will try to get in on this, I'm still trying to finish Shining Force. I have to go find either my NES carts or the Gamecube anniversary collection.
Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: singlebanana on May 31, 2015, 07:01:01 PM I started playing Mega Man 2 today and ran through all the bosses like a champ. For Air Man, I just Mega Man's normal shooter. When he throws out the tornadoes, if you can, run forward and jump over the first one and keep firing as you are pushed back. He goes down pretty quick.
I'd like to talk about level routes people use, but I may save that for next week.........unless you follow me on Twitter. :D Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: RetroRage on May 31, 2015, 07:11:19 PM ohhh yeah. Let's do it

Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: shaggy on May 31, 2015, 09:06:43 PM Of course it changes from player to player but there is a route in every MM game where the "correct" progression involves getting the weapon from the boss for its use on the next boss that is weak against that weapon.
Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: singlebanana on May 31, 2015, 09:11:03 PM Not exactly so in MM2, there can be slight variations. Not every weapon has it's best counterpart. Some are best used more than once.

Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: RetroRage on June 01, 2015, 08:29:23 PM Beat Mega Man 2 in a little over 2 hours with lots of screwing around and speedrun strat practice. I want to finish in less than an hour by the end of the week.

Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: JerryGreenwood on June 02, 2015, 06:38:32 AM I'm feeling the casual play-through. I was thinking the challenges would be like "beat MM2 on hard" or "beat the games with only the mega buster" (which I'll probably do anyway), but it'll be nice to just play and chat.
2 things I'll say to start... 1 - Two of the best soundtracks on the NES. Many consider MM2 the greatest soundtrack of all-time and it probably has the most cover songs. But I feel MM3 is overshadowed in this department because MM2's soundtrack is so dominant. If you ask me, they are both top 5 NES soundtracks. 2 - I've beaten both of these games several times. I'm going to play in a random order and refrain from using Metal Blade. For those who don't know, Metal Blade makes an easy game easier. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on June 02, 2015, 08:35:11 AM I'm feeling the casual play-through. Good suggestions Jerry! I wanted to add achievements to this playthrough, but not being very experienced with the Mega Man games myself, I wasn't sure what to set as achievements. I added these suggestions to the OP. Keep 'em coming if you have any more. I'm sure the Mega Man veterans here will appreciate the challenge. :) Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Duke.Togo on June 02, 2015, 08:55:47 AM I'm hoping my Blinking Light Win comes in pretty soon (it should). Beat either game without using an E-tank. Hard to say which is more difficult; using only the Mega Buster or not using any E-tanks.*Regarding the Mega Buster challenge, there are some bosses that are invincible against the Mega Buster so we'd obviously have to excuse those enemies. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Neo on June 02, 2015, 12:06:07 PM Beat the games with only the megabuster. Lol...if someone does that i want an autograph. That sounds like it would be very hard.

It's not that bad, in MM2 a lot of the bosses take a lot of damage from the Mega Buster. However, beating either game without E-tanks AND only using the Mega Buster would be a MAJOR challenge. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: JerryGreenwood on June 06, 2015, 07:01:06 AM I'm trying to do a mix of a speed run, mega buster-only, no vehicle, and no e-tank. (normal difficulty)
It took me 62 minutes to get to Wily's Castle. I doubt that's very fast. Heatman's disappearing blocks cost me a 3 lives. Other than that, I think I only died 2 other times. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: JerryGreenwood on June 06, 2015, 08:52:57 AM Any favorite MM2 tunes?
Dr. Wily's first stage has been covered a million times and is probably the most popular song from the game. While I do like that song, I'm gunna pick a few less known (less covered) tracks. My top 3 is probably Air Man Flash Man Bubble Man If I was forced to pick a dud, it would be Crash Man (but it's still not a bad song). Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: singlebanana on June 06, 2015, 09:37:28 AM Put in a little work on MM3 this morning before the family woke up...... Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on June 06, 2015, 11:42:16 AM I was finally able to get started on Mega Man 2 yesterday. I made it through all of the stages except for Quick Man, but I'll tackle it again today. I had a hard time with the laser things that come out from the sides of the screen. I'll have to figure out the pattern and the optimal route to take.
Like I said earlier in the thread, my experience with the Mega Man games is very limited. While I have played them a little bit here and there, this is really the first time I've ever sat down and put in a serious effort to play through any of these games. It's cool to finally see what all the fuss is about. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Ikariniku on June 06, 2015, 04:13:57 PM Stuck on Wily Castle in Mega Man 2. As for MM2, I beat it over the weekend (on Normal) with no e-tanks, no vehicles (items), and mega buster-only. Next step, Difficult difficulty and then I'll try the same challenge with MM3. I think MM3 will be the hardest game to do that with. Some of the bosses only take 1 damage from the mega buster. Impossible. How did you make it past the huge open space that has no blocks on the first Dr. Wiley stage without using the Item 1? I assume you mean you beat the game without the unnecessary use of items, like not using Item 2 on Heatman's stage. Still, that's awesome! I love this series. I think a big part of the problem is I'm playing on the GC and not the NES. I keep confusing the jump and shoot buttons. Also, it's hard to "fist" the controller and pound the shoot button with the index finger. A strategy I use a lot on this game. Anyone else playing on the GC? In fact, I'd put it as one of the best NES tracks ever. It's a shame that Capcom 'wasted' it for the Intro (because a lot of the time people just hit start right away and don't get to hear it)
Anyway, an update for for my "helmetless" challenge (no e-tanks, no vehicles, mega buster-only) MM2 Normal - Complete MM2 Difficult - Only Quickman remaining. He is very tough and I can't gauge a pattern. MM3 - 8 robot masters down, on to the next 4 stages. I'm not feeling too confident in finishing these. Hard Man was near impossible, Gemini Man and Shadow Man are very tough, and I can't even beat Quickman. I don't think I'll fare well when it's time to fight all 8 robot masters in a row. Impossible. How did you make it past the huge open space that has no blocks on the first Dr. Wiley stage without using the Item 1? Magic! No, it's impossible. I used the Items (and certain weapons to beat certain bosses) ONLY when the game forces you too. Maybe it's just that I'm too familiar with MM2 since I played it a ton as a kid, but to me, the difficulty greatly increases in MM3. It does. There are a lot of bosses in MM2 that you can bully. You can blast away at them and just dodge a little and you'll end up winning. The patterns for the bosses in MM3 are far more sophisticated and challenging. It is quickly becoming one of my favorite tracks in the entire NES library. I'm surprised you're having such a hard time with Quick Man. I felt like he was one of the easier bosses to beat with the Mega Buster. Granted, I still lost a good chunk of health on him, so I may not have fared so well during the boss rush if I had to fight all the robot masters using only the Mega Buster. I also agree that the bosses in MM3 seem much more difficult than the bosses in MM2. The patterns for most of the MM2 robot masters are very predictable. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: MetalFRO on June 11, 2015, 09:19:50 AM I bought the GC version of the anniversary collection as a new release, or relatively new. I think I paid $30 for it, or thereabouts. I could never get used to the button swap either, and it's a crying shame Capcom didn't give us the opportunity to swap it. When I get around to playing these (been spending too much time on Mass Effect!), I'll probably play via the Xbox version of the collection.

Yeah, Mega Man 3 really beats you over the head with its new mechanic. I find the Mega Man games are actually very good at teaching the player their abilities and introducing new hazards. A very underrated property in games. Sliding properly did help, but my breakthrough was realizing and utilizing the safe corners. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on June 12, 2015, 05:25:05 PM I just finished Mega Man 3. It was way more challenging than MM2, even when set to the 'Difficult' setting. Even the return of the MM2 Robot Masters in MM3 were way harder.
This was a cool way for me to finally play through some of these games and get into the series a little bit. Other than dabbling with these games a little here and there, this was really the first time I've ever seriously sat down and played through these games with the intent of finishing them. They can be pretty frustrating at times, but there's something about them that kept me coming back for more. I may fire up the original game some time in the near future. :) Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: singlebanana on June 12, 2015, 05:50:42 PM Congrats! Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: shaggy on June 12, 2015, 11:46:11 PM Air Man, Crash Man, and Wood Man complete.
Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: JerryGreenwood on June 13, 2015, 06:15:11 AM Quickman complete. Wasn't as hard as I first thought. I think you have to make your shots count. It seemed that if I fired a bunch of random shots, that made him act a little crazier.
Also, it's tough to reach him with full health and 2 lives in stock. That final screen with the Sniper Joe's and his robot is more or less impossible to get past without taking chunks of damage. I find the Mega Man games are actually very good at teaching the player their abilities and introducing new hazards. I think Mega Man games have some of the greatest mechanics of all-time. At it's core, it couldn't be more simple - you just jump and shoot (and slide). If you dive deeper, there is a lot you can do with those tools. I'm a veteran at these games, so to me, fighting a boss with the weapon that it's weak against is a joke. If you play with only the Mega Buster, you'll see that every boss (MM3 in particular) has an intricate pattern, sometimes multiple patterns. Take Crash Man for example. If you don't shoot, he won't shoot. He won't even jump. He just runs back and forth across the screen. When you start shooting, that's when $h17 hits the fan. I eventually gave up on the Heatman stage because of that long series of disappearing/reappearing platforms (the bane of all Mega Man games), and figure I'll pick back up on my next play through. I was very surprised how quickly I accomplished that, however.
Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on June 15, 2015, 08:44:26 AM Popped the original MM this morning. Not as much of an issue with the bosses and stages as I remember. Ugh......no passwords. Here was my boss/weapon order for those interested: Gutsman - P Cutsman - G Bomberman - P Elecman - C Iceman - E Fireman - I Thanks for listing the bosses and their weaknesses. I never know which power to use on which boss and don't feel like doing all the trial and error. I just got a Retron 5 and started playing the original MM on it. It's a cool system, and it's awesome to be able to save states in between levels just so I don't have to play the entire game in one sitting. However, I'm noticing significant input lag on my HDTV, and it's making the game much more difficult than it should be. I've done a side by side comparison between the Retron and the NES, and it's night and day. I tried configuring my TV's settings, and it seemed to help somewhat, but the lag is still a problem. I'm going to try updating the firmware when my new SD card comes in (can't find my old one) and see if that helps. The rehashed MM2 robot masters, save Metal Man, are literally impossible.
I think I still have a chance at MM2 on Difficult. I can get up to the Boss Gauntlet room, but it wore me out and I turned it off. MM1 is by far the hardest. I can vouch for that via the Mega Man Powered Up. I haven't beat the original game, but MMPU is also hard as nails, and it's only by being able to milk extra lives in the Oil Man stage and having them available to get through Wily's Castle that I was able to complete that game a few months back. Holy cow, that's hard! Thanks for the tip on the Airman stage, guys. I think I beat that level already, so I'll have to double-check, because I only have Item 3 currently... I ended up looking at a Youtube video for that part, but from what I can tell, you only have just enough Crash Missiles to break all of the cannons and every pillar that's necessary to break. You can bypass a few of the pillars by using Item 1. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: singlebanana on June 17, 2015, 01:47:41 PM And place a bomb in between pillars to take out 2 at a time. If you place a bomb on the wall ledge between the two bottom right pillars, you can destroy both at the same time.
Another trick, blow up all the pillars, fill up crash bombers and come back. Pillars will no longer be there. I beat all of the stages, and played through the first part of the Wiley stage, only to be greeted by a boss that made short work of me. Looks like they recycled that boss for MM3, but he was way harder in this game (at least based on the one try I had against him).
I gotta say, if anybody has the opportunity to sit and play these games side by side with a friend, I highly recommend it. I had a friend over while playing the original MM, and we would swap the controller back and forth every time we died. It was a lot of fun playing this way, and made the game way less frustrating than playing alone, at least it did for me. I have been bouncing between NES, GameCube and Sega playing. Whats good is the passwords work on NES & GameCube. The Sega has a save system so.
Here are some of my notes I jotted down MegaMan III thoughts Magnet Man stage: those darn disappearing blocks. Took me 3 times to beat him Hard Man stage: DAMN BEES!!!! Got my first E tank.Found out if you die and go back you can keep getting the same E tank over and over. Took me 2 trys to beat him Top Man stage: Ughh that darn Robot Cat.Took 1 try to beat him. The hard man buster really hurts him Shadow Man stage:. I like the part where the screen goes black and its like your in space. The parachute goes were a pain in the butt. More notes to be added Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: MetalFRO on June 19, 2015, 10:23:26 AM Maybe it's because I've been playing Mega Man 3 off and on for a number of years, but most of that stuff doesn't bother me. Except for the bees! You're absolutely right about that. Those are the equivalent of the egg drop enemy from MM2's Airman stage, but MORE EVIL! Unless you have a weapon you can quickly take them out with, like the Magnet Missile or something, you WILL take damage. Those kinds of cheap moments do make it frustrating.
The robot cat doesn't take that many Mega Buster blasts to take down, and once you get to where you can jump over (or slide under) the yarn balls, you'll be in good shape. Best to take him out quickly before the fleas make an appearance, though. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: russlyman on June 19, 2015, 01:20:18 PM Good tips. MM2 (n) - completed with no e-tanks and no weapons used MM2 (d) - up to Wily's castle with no e-tanks and no weapons used MM3 - completed with no e-tanks used I'll say it again - MM3 is impossible to beat with no e-tanks AND no weapons. Top Man, Magnet Man, Shadow Man, and Snake Man down, in that order. I'm playing via the Xbox version of the Anniversary Collection. Anyone else playing this version? The sound emulation seems a bit dodgy to me, specifically when you get a large life or energy fill, the sound is more high pitched and shrill than I remember. Also, some of the other sounds are just, off. Another thing - in the Snake Man stage, I was knocked off the elevation platforms by the floating platforms that come up out of them, a couple times when I was standing almost dead center on the platform, as if I was too far over and the rising platform bumped me off. Has anyone playing the NES cart experienced that?

It seems to be a similar problem to the floating platforms in the original Mega Man, where sometimes you go right through them. I get around this by always jumping right before the platform exits the tower, and you will land on it fine. The knocking off seems to happen when it exits the tower and hits your sprite. Kid Icarus, Deadly Towers, and Metroid had them, but I can't think of too many other games.
It really makes these games playable if you only have 20 minutes to spare. Well, the story I heard was that Inafune sees the game he wanted MM3 to be, and that the game it is doesn't measure up. Notably, he couldn't put in cut scenes to carry the story like he wanted. Well, the story I heard was that Inafune sees the game he wanted MM3 to be, and that the game it is doesn't measure up. Notably, he couldn't put in cut scenes to carry the story like he wanted. I think MM3 is a great game, but there are instances when playing it where I feel like it might have been rushed. Some people point to the shorter levels compared to MM2 as an example, and to me at least, I think that MM2 looks crisper graphically (though some may argue). The inclusion of additional "hoops" to jump through before the Dr. Wiley stage seems odd and unnecessary and has no supporting storyline. I can't help but but feel like, "Why am I doing this? Who is this new enemy who takes on the traits of the MM2 bosses?" Again, I like MM3 and even would consider it a worthy successor, but playing them side-by-side, I get a better sense of the latter being a bit less polished. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: russlyman on June 24, 2015, 03:21:13 PM Switched over to MegaMan 2 last night for a bit. Got two bosses left than off to Wiley's castle. I've beaten it before recently. Figure I'd knock this out and track back over to megaman 3. We'll see

Now that you mention it, and Ikariniku mentioned it being rushed, I think I had the title screen all wrong.I've always thought that the title screen was awesome. No bells, no whistles, no story. I read it like - "Here I am. I'm Mega Man f****** 3. I'm comin' at you raw, so hit the start button and let's get it on!!" But after reading what you guys have said, I know that it wasn't intended to be taken that way and it's just the result of a rushed game. On the other hand, the boss patterns in MM3 are more sophisticated than the previous MM's. There was much more planning and design. They also took a small leap of faith and went outside-the-box by not using standard 'elements' when creating them. Snake Man?! Top Man?! A clever way to prevent it from becoming too stale. Also, I always thought a major flaw in MM2 was the weaknesses of the robot masters. Metal Blade is SUPER effective against 3 or 4 of the robot masters and most of the robot masters are weak against multiple weapons. To me, that aspect of the game seemed rushed or there was a lot of confusion about what they really wanted to achieve. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: MetalFRO on June 27, 2015, 10:17:36 AM I've been under the weather, and haven't felt like doing anything but watching TV, but hopefully today or tomorrow I'll feel up to playing a bit, and maybe I can get farther. The 2-boss stages after the 8 main bosses are kind of brutal. Not the stages themselves, but having to fight 2 bosses and try not to burn an E-tank. That, and, since I didn't spend any time truly memorizing patterns (because I knew which weapons were effective against which bosses), with different weaknesses, I'm having to adjust what I'm doing.

Still working on the re visit bosses That seems to be the most difficult part of the game. Wiley stages aren't very long or cumbersome compared to the revisits. Best of luck! Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on June 30, 2015, 09:22:10 AM Well, this is the last day of June, and I just wanted to chime in with my closing thoughts. As I mentioned before, the Mega Man games are pretty new to me. I didn't play them growing up, and I've only dabbled a little bit here and there with them over the years. The whole reason I chose to do a couple of these games for a community playthrough was to get my feet wet with the series and hopefully finally see what all the fuss is about. I'm glad to say that I 'get it' now, and after finishing MM 2 and 3, I've already started playing some of the other games in the series.
I just want to say thanks to everyone who participated this month for making this a good playthrough and for making it that much more fun for me to get acquainted with this series. Here's to more awesome playthroughs together! ;D Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: MetalFRO on June 30, 2015, 09:23:45 AM I'm not sure I'm going to make it. I downed 2 of the 4 MM2 boss rush stages last night, but MAN is that Needle Man stage brutal on the 2nd go! If you don't make it through the part that requires Rush Jet the first time, OR you use too many of the weapon energy recharge icons, you're absolutely done dealing. I have a project at work today that might go into this evening, and an appointment this evening as well, so I probably won't get a chance to play. If I hadn't been sick half of last week and this weekend, I might have squeezed it out, but it looks like I won't. Still, it's been interesting to go back and play through these games. Glad I finally took down MM2, and I may go ahead and finish MM3 anyway, just because I haven't done it legitimately since I was a kid.
Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on June 30, 2015, 09:34:50 AM Yeah, we talked about this some on the podcast, but it's been documented that Mega Man 3's development was rushed, and I feel like the Needle Man Rush Jet sequence is one of those things that would have been ironed out if they had more time to polish the game. Like you said, if you fail that sequence once, you're screwed, and you have no other recourse but to lose the rest of your lives and restart the stage. That is terrible game design, and something I like to believe was an oversight that would have been fixed had the game spent more time in development.
Anyway, good luck with the rest of the game. Like Rich said earlier, the revisit stages are probably the hardest parts of the game, so it should be mostly downhill from there if you can get past them. Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on June 30, 2015, 09:09:28 PM Isn't it impossible to make it across without any refills? If you picked them all up on a previous life, then there's no way to make it across until you restart the level and reset them, is there?
Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: Duke.Togo on June 30, 2015, 09:31:11 PM I want to say that the flies can be respawned on the platforms where the refill would be, but I'd have to play again to test.

If you picked them all up on a previous life, then there's no way to make it across until you restart the level and reset them, is there? Correct, it's not possible to cross w/o at least 1 of those refills available. And yes, I was aware of the "farming" for refills. I used that technique a couple times to refill the Rush Jet power meter, but again, without additional power-ups, you're stuck. Nope, they don't respawn. Spent 30 minutes harvesting refills for my Rush Jet only to realize that the other refills along the way do not respawn, this making it impossible. You have to commit seppuku and make you way back........ Title: Re: Mega Man 2 & 3 - Retro Playthrough - June 2015 Post by: JerryGreenwood on July 01, 2015, 01:01:00 PM Couldn't beat MM2 on difficult without weapons and e-tanks. It was just too draining. The boss gauntlet room beat me up too much. Airman's projectiles are too random.

Started it last night. It's cool you can play as the bosses too. Did a stage as cut man. Pretty fun.

Prepare for a severe beatdown during the Dr. Wily stage. You'll want to say uncle, or possibly worse, when you hit that juncture. That is, unless you can perfect the near pixel-perfect timing of the Gutsman stage dropout platforms that make a 2nd appearance there :)

@singlebanana: Go play Axiom Verge. You'll love it. As far as why we have such odd boxart for the US releases I would argue Anime was still niche in the 80s and a lot was done on every level to hide the products Japanese origin back then. There was still an anti-Japanese sentiment and fear that Japan's then booming economy would overtake the US.
