Title: If you could have one arcade, which one?
Post by: Sureshot on May 04, 2005, 12:28:40 PM
(http://images.webmagic.com/klov.com/images/G/cGalaga.jpg)

Galaga would be mine.  I got quite hooked on the game over the last month due to not having any internet access, and boy, I now appreciate the game on a whole new level for being pure fun :)  I did used to have a conversion of the game on my old BBC Master (Zalaga) which was always always semi-popular for me, though I've never played it as much as I have in most recent times.

If I could have a second place arcade, it would probably be Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo - perhaps the greatest puzzle game ever - or Mr. Do as it was one of the first games I ever played on my BBC (as Mr. Ee), and still love it.

What would yours be?

well, i already have a pretty good collection of arcade games (Neo Geo MVS 4 Slot, Vigilante, Nintendo VS), but if there was one that i would buy right now if i had the opportunity and the money, would be one of my all-time favorite games:    Burgertime

if i got to choose a pinball machine, since i already have my numer 1 choice (Super Mario Bros.) id take my number 2 choice:  The Sopranos

I have the one I would want. Ms Pac Man!!!!!

I would definitely want the 2-in-1 Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga cabinet.  That thing rocks hardcore.

What do you people want stand up cabinets for? With the emulations and compilations that are out there today, you can get a near real arcade feeling at a regular computer/tv.

Sure, it's not actually real, but it's a lot closer to the real thing than playing a racing or flying game on emulation, instead of on a huge cabinet with a seat and moving parts.

That said, I'd love a big virtua racing cabinet. The one that's shaped like a real race car. Or maybe A sega rally cabinet. I can't chose!

like you said...its "almost" real

i dont want the almost feel...i want the REAL feeling

i also hope to get a crusin' usa at the next super auctions if the price is right....because of the real feeling of a real race set, shifter, etc

I would want (obviously) a Mortal Kombat cab. (Not so much MK4)
Just as utterly amzing would be Asteroids, Tempest, Centipede or one of the Point Blank ones.

I have played in arcades very little compared to most of the rest of you guys so i have missed out on alot of great games.

I would definitely want a Viper Phase 1 (New Version) cab.  This is a lesser-known and rare game made by Seibu Kaihatsu, the makers of the more popular Raiden Fighters.

You could always build a MAME cabinet, as long as you have a fast enough computer for the game you want (and the game is supposrted by MAME, most are) its practically better than the real thing if you build it right (or buy, but people rip you off, go ahead and search ebay)

I'm planning on building one when I get enought money and stuffing it with roms for every system known to man. (well the fun ones at least)

(damn thats a lot of parentheses)

OK for all the EMU and MAME cabs  :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck: :yuck:

Post by: Sureshot on May 04, 2005, 07:58:50 PM
Yeah, I think it's nicer to achieve the whole experience by having 'the real thing'.  I can play MAME on my PC quite happily, but having a real working arcade cab would give that extra special value.

okay since were talking about the ENORMOUS arcade cabs now I would like to add House of the Dead II and a 4 seat Daytona USA to my wish list.

The original Tapper game where you play as a bartender serving Budweisers to get patrons out the door. I especially enjoyed the Outer Space levels.

I like the game because it used a joystick and a beer tap stick on the console. That, and is was the only Arcade game I've ever mastered.

The version that's on Midway Arcade Treasures is okay, but it's too politically correct (it's called Root Beer Tapper) imo, so it won't offend the masses.

I would love to have Star Wars:  The Arcade Game and a cocktail version of Galaga/Ms. Pac-man.

I also wouldn't mind a USA vs.USSR bubble hockey table. The "BOO!" button was a fun touch.

I'm actually looking at buying Super Chase at the moment.

Any idea what cabinets are worth?

As a kid I always wished I had a Daytona USA machine, as I felt I could just play it forever... this pretty much was proven once the Saturn came out as it was my only game at 1st and I did play it a hell of a lot.

But I also love the Splatterhouse arcade machine.... and then there is Die Hard Arcade that I never grow tired of too.

Well since it is just one, I'll go with Splatterhouse. Because Daytona is still around anywhere that still has arcade machines (which isn't many places anymore :() and there is a pixel perfect conversion of Die Hard on Saturn.

Difficult question. OutRun was always one of my favorites, but I think that if I could own anything it would be a popular pinball table from the 70s.

Wait.. Can I pick Revolution X?!

Tournament Cyberball 2072 (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=10175&letter=T)

I used to play this game back in high school. We had one across the street from the school, and used to play it on our lunch. Nobody on campus could touch me at this game. I later  entered into a statwide tournament that was held at a local amusement park, and won the competition.

Of course there are a lot of other games that I would consider as a close second. ;)

Actually, you know what arcade machine would rule? House of the Dead 4 Special...

http://games.ign.com/articles/689/689290p1.html

"The House of the Dead 4 Special is a two-player attraction based off The House of the Dead 4. Players enter an enclosed room, sit down, buckle up, and experience zombie blasting like never before. The game makes use of two 100 inch screens, one in front and one in back, and a 5 speaker sound system, giving the impression that zombies are attacking from all sides. The seat shakes as zombies attack, and players are blasted with air for every bullet that penetrates their defenses."

I'd rather wait for the PS3 version this fall, that way i don't have a vibrator stuck under my ass and it's my sound system instead. plus the small beer fridge i use as a end table beats a rear screen any day. ;)

To each their own I guess. I'm long past the days where I prefer the loud backgrounds, greasy controls and strangers watching of arcades, when I can do all in the comfort of my own living room with friends and plenty of cold ones.

But it's always a nice experience to have that kind of feeling you can only get in the arcade. It's always fun to have people around and (hopefully) complimenting your skill. Plus, nothing beats playing DDR in the arcade where the whole world can see you being a moron.

True but air conditioning, food, drink, furniture, 5.1, friends, no lineups, no need for change and a nearby bathroom still win out for me. If i want to show off to the world I have a gamertag and a blog and youtube is always available. ;)

Don't get me wrong, when most of these things were out of my reach as a kid the arcades were the place to be, but when you move out when your 18, doing all of that @ your own pad is much more preferrable not to mention convenient.

How often do 25+ year olds get together in groups and hang at the local arcade anymore? There are still arcades around so that's not really an excuse.

"Arcades" over here have always been seedy places with nothing but gambling machines. You only get "arcades" in seaside towns. They have coin stackers where you put a coin in a slot hoping it knocks some off a stack into the collection tray.

And that's about the only arcade game I can think of in particular. There was a motorbike game where you sat on a proper bike seat but like most racing games it was crap because it cost 50p for you to not reach the first checkpoint.

I'd like s Streets of Rage 2 cabinet though.

You live in a different country with a different culture. There's no chain of arcades here, just a few dingy places stuffed away in the corner of malls that have been replaced by super-malls and a few amusement parks with arcades scattered around the country.

At one time every bowling alley, theatre, mall, pizza joint, anusement park and exhibition ground had several machines, but that was 10-15 years ago.

The best arcade now is the 5-6 machines each Empire Theatre or Paramount theatre seems to have in their lobbies.

That's pretty much what Tondog is getting at i think, your still in the comfort of your own home. You don't have the atmosphere to make you feel like your really there surrounded by zombies with all those luxuries.

Me and my fiancee still go arcading, but very rarely. These days, there are only two arcades in this entire state I'm aware of, and neither much bigger if at all then my own bed room :(
Arcades are heading the way off the pinball tables I think.

If there is a Streets of Rage 2 machine, that means my friend wasn't lying back in primary school, and if I ever see him again, I owe him an apology haha.

Fuel to the home vs arcade debate, not many of us have proper MAME setups or even JAMMA quality console sticks at home, let alone dedicated arcade machines.  I don't know what 5.1 surround sound and a comfortable sofa is going to get you because I've never seen an arcade game that could be effectively played that way.

My home versus Arcade is based on arcades now, not of those from back then. How many adults will cruise to the nearest arcade with a couple of rolls of quarters and a few friends? Versus how many adults will pick up a wiimote or a Guitar Hero controller.

I'm still pissed about the disappearance of video arcades. We lost our last one around here about 3 years ago. When I was in high school I used to take people there and stand in front of it and demand that they look at it, because it wouldn't be around much longer.

As to which game I would own, either Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtes or Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

P.S. I don't have JAMMA sound, but I have one of those full-size x-arcade sticks. I like it a lot.

Thing that sux is while I did state there are probably only 2 more arcades left in this state, I don't think I mentioned they are both about an hour away via public transport :(
