Title: Re: Medievil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: douglie007 on February 17, 2015, 07:10:05 AM I want to do this play-through, but need to find a copy of the game for my PS1 first
Title: Re: Medievil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on February 17, 2015, 08:54:25 AM This is going to be my first Playthrough, count me in! Awesome! Very happy to have you along. MediEvil is the game I have been wanting to play and share with everyone since we started these playthroughs. I first played it when it came out in 1998 on a whim (probably because I liked the cover art). It's a really funny and well-designed game that I hope all of the participants enjoy. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: JerryGreenwood on February 24, 2015, 08:20:56 AM I try to hit every retro playthrough, but I'll be missing this one. Just got too much on my plate and March is typically an extremely busy month for me. I don't know anything about this game...perhaps I'll check it out in the future. Enjoy!
Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on February 24, 2015, 10:26:40 AM I hate that you won't be able to join us Jerry. I was hoping for your feedback on the game. The game averages about 6-8 hours, so not a very long one if you find the time.
Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: JerryGreenwood on February 24, 2015, 11:43:55 AM If it's only 6-8 hours I'm sure I can find the time. Just looked on eBay and there doesn't seem to be that many copies available (rarity guide has it at 74% fwiw). If I can snipe one at a good price, I'm in. Even if I have to join mid-month.
Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on February 24, 2015, 03:03:50 PM Good to know :)
I've already started playing through the game to establish checkpoints and work up some achievements. This is my third playthrough of this game, and I must say, it holds up. Well.....maybe the graphics are a bit dated. Ha! The kids are really loving watching me play, so I may have to record some commentary from them at some point. I think I'll (have to) ask my kids if they can help me out with this game. Make it a sort of 'family playthough' Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on February 25, 2015, 12:46:40 PM The kids are really loving watching me play, so I may have to record some commentary from them at some point. I think I'll (have to) ask my kids if they can help me out with this game. Make it a sort of 'family playthough' The game has some creepy creatures in it, but it's very comical and tongue and cheek, so it doesn't scare kids. It was heavily influenced by the films of Tim Burton and the music of Danny Elfman, and it is very evident. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on February 25, 2015, 09:06:43 PM I want to do this play-through, but need to find a copy of the game for my PS1 first I'm not sure how close to the original it is, but MediEvil: Resurrection on the PSP is a cheaper alternative. I know the game is also downloadable. The sponsor of the Collectorcast, Off The Charts Video Games has a copy. The Collectorcast mentions a code in their podcast where you can receive a discount. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on March 03, 2015, 10:39:05 AM I've played through the first few levels of MediEvil. The game takes a little time to get used to due to some general early PS1-era 3D awkwardness, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty enjoyable. I think I would have really liked this game as a kid, it's a shame I missed out on it back in the day.
The voice acting is actually pretty good considering this game came out in an era that was notorious for bad voice acting. It reminds me quite a bit of Fable. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 03, 2015, 11:12:19 AM The voice acting is quite good and really adds a lot to what I think is a great story. It's a serious adventure game with a nice comical edge.

Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Bildtstar on March 06, 2015, 03:46:13 AM Made it to the Scarecrow Fields, but haven't completed it yet. I'm playing together with my 9 year old. He likes the game, although the controls/camera are annoying at times.

Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 06, 2015, 08:31:45 AM Made it to the Scarecrow Fields, but haven't completed it yet. I'm playing together with my 9 year old. He likes the game, although the controls/camera are annoying at times. I completely agree with your comment regarding the controls and the camera. There are places where the limitations of the PSX make the camera difficult to work with. Accurate jumping from one platform to the next can also be very tedious, more so later on in this game as you will see. However, I think that the programmers did the best they could with what they had to work with and I think the game is very ambitious. I'm glad your 9 year old likes the game. As I mentioned before, my kids loved it. Their favorite area was the Scarecrow Fields and it's actually one of mine too. Neat puzzle element to that one and I love the scenery in that level. Im at the mausoleum That's a fun area and has one of my favorite boss fights of all time. It will be fun to discuss that once the 2nd weeks checkpoint is posted. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on March 06, 2015, 10:47:40 AM I made it to the Scarecrow Fields, but got a game over and rage quit. I'll do better next time now that I know that the corn kills you (what!?).
I like this game, but they really ramped up the difficulty a few levels in, so combine that with some awkward controls and camera issues, and the experience can be pretty frustrating at times. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 06, 2015, 11:05:43 AM I made it to the Scarecrow Fields, but got a game over and rage quit. I'll do better next time now that I know that the corn kills you (what!?). Yeah, you CANNOT walk in the wheat field, it's instant death. If you pay attention to the field you will hear a kind of screechy cackle and sometimes you see a little guy with knives for hands jump up out of the grain. It's a really great atmospheric mechanic. Quote I like this game, but they really ramped up the difficulty a few levels in, so combine that with some awkward controls and camera issues, and the experience can be pretty frustrating at times. I agree. It can be frustrating and I'll warn you that your frustration will greatly increase later on in the game where you are required to make some pretty precise jumps. I didn't have a lot of trouble in the earlier levels this go round, but having played it a lot when I was younger, the mechanics are still familiar to me. One of the things that really stands out to me in this game is the diversity of the levels and how creative the designers were. Some the level design and the music are very "Nightmare Before Christmas"-ish and this was very intentional. Anyway, I hope you guys aren't getting too frustrated that you're not enjoying this one. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on March 07, 2015, 03:22:29 PM I played a couple more levels in, and I'm really starting to enjoy the game much more now. I finished Scarecrow Fields, The Sleeping Village, and the Ant Cave side quest (also completed the requirements for achievements 1 & 3!).
I really like the music in this game. I haven't really heard any catchy melodies or anything that gets stuck in your head. The music is more subtle and atmospheric, and really serves the game well. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 07, 2015, 05:09:24 PM I agree. The music for this game really isn't catchy, but kind of blends in well with the background. I think there's something to be said about that.
Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 08, 2015, 09:42:25 AM The second checkpoint is up. Good luck!
Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on March 09, 2015, 08:19:41 AM I finished MediEvil over the weekend. If anybody wants a reference on how long the game is, my total game time was about 6.5 hours upon completion, not including time wasted from deaths, which would probably bump my total time spent with this game to about 7-8 hours.
I had some frustrations with the early part of the game, but after finishing the first weekly checkpoint (Scarecrow Fields), I got really into it and had a hard time putting it down. There were still a few frustrating levels throughout the game and some general issues with the camera and controls, but the good far outweighs the bad. It's a nice little hidden gem. Yeah, I'd say that the game hits around the 7-8 hour mark for first time players, so your estimate is on the money. The first time I played this game, I also remember having a hard time putting it down. I don't think it's an overly difficult title, but it's difficult enough to illicit some "Game Overs" at points where you "just about had it..." I find that the story, the characters (inc. those in the Hall of Heroes), the puzzles, and the variety of levels is what really keeps me coming back for more. I do not remember how I originally found this game, or what made me purchase it on release (probably a magazine write up), but it's always been the one PSX game that I recommend to almost everyone looking for something fun that perhaps they've never played before. I'd really like to see this series "arise" again with the power of high-def. I'm curious Steven, but are you going to seek out and play the sequel? Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Disposed Hero on March 09, 2015, 09:17:01 AM I'm curious Steven, but are you going to seek out and play the sequel? I plan on it. Immediately after finishing MediEvil, I did an ebay search for the sequel. I have one sitting in my watch list that I hope to buy if the bidding doesn't go too high. If I would ever actually get around to playing it is another matter entirely. ;) Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 09, 2015, 09:21:19 AM I'm curious Steven, but are you going to seek out and play the sequel? For those interested in playing MediEvil 2, it's a decent game. Similar gameplay to the original, but a quirky, more modern storyline. Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Bildtstar on March 10, 2015, 05:55:42 PM Jumping platforms has been instant death quite often, better call the game character Sir Daniel Die-a-Lot. I'm at the Enchanted Earth for the second time, but died in the level with the flying demons (dragons?) Question: How many life bottles can you have at that point, I have four.

Jumping platforms is a real pain, but other than that it's a fun game. Spend most of my free time playing this game, I apologize for neglecting my work on the database...

Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 15, 2015, 10:00:56 AM Checkpoint #3 is up! Complete "Gallow's Gauntlet." How is everyone progressing so far?
Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Bildtstar on March 16, 2015, 05:16:50 AM Completed "The Time Device" yesterday. Any tips for defeating Zarok?
Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: singlebanana on March 16, 2015, 05:47:28 AM The last battle has a string of 3 different bosses you have to fight in a row. As soon as you enter the arena, go to the chests and get the "Good Lightning" before touching the seal in the middle of the floor. In fight one, do not lose any foot soldiers and heal them as much as you can. The more you keep alive with the Good Lightning, the quicker the battle and the more healing vials you receive at the end. The last two battles consist of a lot of running away and use of ranged weapons. Be sure you are fully stocked on ranged weapons especially the spears, magic bow and flame bow. Zarok can only be hit when he stands on his hind legs, so it makes for a rather tedious and slow battle. Good luck!

Title: Re: MediEvil - Retro Playthrough - March 2015 Post by: Bildtstar on March 25, 2015, 02:20:07 PM Finally finished the game, after recovering from the flu and high fever last week. Defeating Zarok was easier than I thought. With your hints in mind, I just kept running in circles, waiting for the right moment to hit Zarok. Like you said, it's a slow battle.
Me and my 9 year old really liked the game, and since I also have Medievil 2 in my collection, we're going to play that game too. Thank you for this nice suggestion for this month's Playthrough!
