Title: Top 10 Beers of RFGen Members (Post yours!)
Post by: singlebanana on May 30, 2014, 02:38:45 PM
I know that we already have a "what are you drinking?" beer thread, but I thought it might be cool to have members post their favorite beers. The Mrs. and I are always looking for new things to try, so hey, why not? Please list the name of the beer, brewery, type, and where it is made. Please include a few honorable mentions or old standbys if you feel so inclined. Please modify and update your post as you find new beers or your taste changes. Cheers!

Here are my Top 10 in no particular order:

1.    Red Oak (Red Oak Brewery, Bavarian Reinheitsgebot, Whitsett, NC, USA)
2.    Anchor Steam (Anchor Brewing Co., steam beer, San Francisco, CA, USA)
3.    Hoegaarden (Hoegaarden Brewery, witbieren, Hoegaarden, Belgium)
4.    Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., pale ale, Chico, CA, USA)
5.    Fat Tire (New Belgium Brewing Co., amber ale, Ft. Collins, CO, USA)
6.    Scrimshaw (North Coast Brewing Co., pilsner, Ft. Bragg, CA, USA)
7.    Bass Ale (Bass Brewery, pale ale, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire , ENG)
8.    Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout (Samuel Smith Brewery, stout, Tadcaster, ENG)
9.    Courage Best Bitter (Well's & Young's Brewing Co., bitter, Bedford, UK)
10.  Sweetwater 420 (Sweetwater Brewing Co., extra pale ale, Atlanta, GA, USA)

Honorable Mentions:
**Hell's Belle (Big Boss Brewing Co., Belgian pale ale, Raleigh, NC, USA)
**Leinenkugel's Fireside Nut Brown (Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, Euro dark lager, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, USA)
**Old Style (Pabst Brewing Co., La Crosse lager, Los Angeles, CA, USA) - drank it in Chicago, I think the perception of this beer is not good, I loved it!
**Busch Light (Anheuser-Busch, pale lager, Milawaukee, WI, USA) - my standby when I venture beyond the realm of the six-pack

This is a tough one. There are so many awesome beers to choose from.....and I don't ever remember names. I've been trying to come up with a list for a couple days now.

I decided to just kinda throw something together. A few of these beers could easily be topped by others I've had in the past but I don't remember exactly what they were and that "not remembering names" thing doesn't help.

1. Beer with good friends is always better than any other kind
2. 2007 Doggie Claws - Hair of the Dog brewery. The other years of this seasonal Barley Wine are great too, this was just my favorite.
3. 11.11.11 Vertical Epic - Stone brewing. It came out on 11-11-11 like Skyrim and was awesome, like Skyrim.
4. Some barrel aged stout from the tap I had in Astoria at a restaurant that got it across the street from Ft George Brewing.
5. Fred From the Wood - Hair of the Dog (again.) Everything from Hair of the Dog is the best  ;)
6. The Hairy Eyeball - Lagunitas. One of my favorite breweries, also, everything here is good. This is a seasonal, haven't had one for awhile but the ones I had were fantastic.
7. EKU 28 - Kulmbacher Brewery. This has been called malt liqueur. If this is the same thing as people drink out of 40's I must be missing something  :D
8. Grand Cru De Pelican - Pelican Pub & Brewery. I could have put anything from this brewery on here, they're just fantastic.
9. Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout - Great Divide Brewing Company. Again, anything from here is great. I could have easily put Old Ruffian Barley Wine or Hercules Double IPA or.....
10. Fort - Dogfishhead. It was, "An ale brewed with a ridiculous amount of pureed raspberries (over a ton of 'em!)"

This has to be the hardest question anyone has asked me.

I'll come back with my list after I've thought about it. Thank goodness it doesn't have to be an ordered list. *Phew!*

EDIT

I think my list would be as follows. In no particular order....

  • Guinness
  • Rodenbach Flanders Red Grand Cru
  • Anchor Steam
  • Erdinger Dunkel
  • Amsterdam Boneshaker Imperial
  • Instigator (local brew pub Indie Ale House house beer)
  • Blanche de Chambly
  • Estrella Damm Inedit
  • Gulden Draak
  • Stella Artois (when I can't decide what I want)

This list will likely change depending on time of year (heavier stuff in winter), social setting, etc.

NOTE
If any RF Genners are in Ontario in the Toronto area, two great restaurants to check out are: The Bier Markt (http://www.thebiermarkt.com/assets/pdf/2014BierMarkt_BeverageMenu-ONT+MTL.pdf) and The Beer Bistro (http://www.beerbistro.com/)

Placeholders are fine sir and again you can modify as much as you want. Looking forward to everyone's lists!

5. Stella Artois- (Anheuser–Busch InBev, Pilsner, Leuven, Belgium)
6. Peach Cream Ale (Tin Whistle Brewing, Fruit beer, Penticton, B.C. CA)
7. Hoyner Pilsner (Hoyne Brewing, Pilsner, Victoria, B.C. CA)

I don't think I have a Top 10, but I'm getting there.

1. Chainbreaker White IPA
2. Third Shift
3. Elysium Men's Room Red
4. Sam Adams Cold Snap
5. Blue Moon Belgian White
6. Dos Equis Lager Especial
7. Classic Heineken
8. Red's Apple Ale

That's all I got.  Sorry if they don't quite meet your beer standards.  I only recently became a beer snob and I'm still barely dipping my toes in.

Yeah, I am with Fleach on this one...picking only ten out of the hundreds of beers I've been fortunate to taste living in the perfect place to have so much variety will be tough.

1. Murphy's Irish Stout
2. Redd's Apple Ale
3. Coors
4. Fat Tire
5. Yeti Imperial Stout
6. Old Ruffian
7. Easy Street Wheat
8. Major Tom's American Wheat
9. Ranger
10. G'knight

I will have to probably edit it as I think about this deeper.
