RF Generation Message Board

This month we will be playing games for one of the best developers (if not the best) for the Atari 2600, Activision. Each week, we will have high score competitions in both games and competitors will duke it out for the sole title of RFGeneation Atari Activision King. The contest winner will also receive a prize from yours truly.

Of course, all of these titles can be found in their original form on Atari 2600 carts (which we highly encourage for the experience), but we are also allowing members to join us by playing later Activision Anthology and Collection releases, which can be found on the PSX, PS2, and GC. Please play all titles on normal difficulty and use stock lives (the number of lives provided by the game, no option changes). For those of you playing on the 2600, please use initial game settings and press "Game Reset" on start up to begin; no game select should be used, unless otherwise noted.  Please let me know if you will be participating this month and go ahead and track down these titles:

Week 1 (4/1 -4/8) - Putting An Exclaimation! on the Classics Week - (Pitfall! & Kaboom!) - The person with highest score for EACH game gets 10 points, others get points in decending order (for example: 2nd place = 9 points, 3rd place = 8 points and so on). No one will get less than 5 points for participating. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 4/8.

Week 2 (4/9- 4/15) - Shmup Week  - (Spider Fighter & Seaquest) - same points system in place. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 4/15.

Week 3 (4/16 -4/22) - The Thrill of the Hunt Week - (Stampede & Keystone Kapers) - same points system in place. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 4/22.

Weeks 4 (4/23 - 4/30) - The Race to the Finish - (Enduro & Sky Jinx) - same points system in place. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 4/30.

This will help you raise your overall score and help those who missed the initial weeks of play catch up. If anyone needs some of these cartridges, let me know. I have 2 full Banker Boxes full of Atari 2600 cartridges that are duplicates, and a large majority of those are Activision titles.

Awesome Shadow! Thanks for offering those up. I tried to pick titles that were inexpensive so that people could grab the original carts if they wanted them. If you get a chance and have easy access to the boxes, let us know which of and how many of each game you have. Thanks

Actually, I think I took pictures of the contents of the boxes since I was planning on trading them in when I was low on money... but couldn't part with them for $0.05/cart. Let me check - otherwise, I'll let you know once I pick up my wife this afternoon since they're in the car still.

The Atari is well before my time, but I've owned one for a couple of years and have never actually played it.  Go ahead and sign me up, but I'll be using this playthrough as more of an Atari sampler and probably won't be all that competitive with the high scores unless I get really into it.

It's not all bad, but if you really want to jam on a non-Atari console you should hunt down the PS2 version.  It is nice.

Looked in my boxes that I had in the car, and I only saw Pitfall!, Kaboom!, Keystone Kapers and Enduro. I know I have extras of Stampede, Sky Jinx, and Seaquest around... Guess I'll keep looking.

Found more boxes of games when making room for the shelving. The shelf fell as I was putting my boxed 3DOs up on the shelf. Fortunately, my head and knee took most of the brunt of the shelf falling, along with the small gouge taken out of the wall. Consoles are fine, fortunately - they slid down the shelf towards the wall and didn't fall far. The shelves have since been replaced with the proper size shelf (1/2" wider), and we'll be working to put those up tonight. Hopefully I'll come across the rest of my 2600 games.

If anyone needs copies of Enduro (x2), Pitfall (x5+), Kaboom (x1), or Keystone Kapers (x1), let me know and I'll send them out now.

Damn, dude that's rough, but I am glad that you and your games are okay. Of course I would rather people purchase from Shadow to help him get rid of his back stock, but if anyone needs games that he does not have, my local store has most of these titles under $5 each. We are playing Pitfall! and Kaboom! in week one, so you'll want to get those first.

Yep, all the same. Game Room for XBox Live IS my Atari.

But there are some differences in controls. I don't know how the other systems handled it, but games that require a paddle (like Circus Atari or Kaboom!) are very difficult to play. It is not possible to get past the 4th or 5th wave of Kaboom! There is zero sensitivity. When I post my Kaboom! score of 46, don't laugh  :)

i'll let singlebanana have the final word because he's hosting this month but in the past we've more or less used the honour system, with photos being optional. i find they do add to the fun though because then especially on games where it shows a list of "top 10 scores" sort of thing then you can see how each person has improved too.

Thanks again Shadow for sending those. Sorry to hear about your knee and shelf. Just let me know how much shipping costs and I'll reimburse you. I found the perfect TV to hook my 2600 up to recently...

I would prefer that everyone post photos of their scores, especially since it is a competition and there is a prize involved (though it is nothing major). I certainly do not think that anyone would be dishonest with their scores, but it helps to ease everyone's mind if it did come into question. If posting scores is a problem for anyone, just send me a PM and we will try to work something out. With camera phones and free photo upload sites, it's a lot more convenient these days. Secondly, I agree with techwizard in that it makes the challenges much more fun if you post photos. We did this with the Streets of Rage playthrough and I think that everyone really had a ball submitting their high score pics.

Working late tonight, so it's looking like Friday before I can send anything out. Found out that when the shelf fell last time, it stripped the slots on the left side and the current shelf almost fell again when we put weight against the left side. Moved it down a couple slots, and it's fine now. None of those boxes (save one) have anything in them, as I wasn't willing to risk my 3DOs again.

We have a 2600 hooked up in the office - perhaps I'll have some of the guys in the office participate this month and take some photos.

are the shelf supports not anchored into studs? i have shelving just like that but never had issues with it falling

Drywall anchors - the studs aren't spaced properly to support the shelf weight. The shelf will support > 300 lbs with the way I have it setup, but it requires that the brackets put the weight on the wall - not on the brackets themselves. :P

If anyone has a Windows Phone, see if you can unlock all of the achievements for Pitfall! this month. :P

The only badge score I have ever accomplished is the Spider Fighter badge. I'll have to denote the badge scores for each game.

So I got around to putting up a few scores last night. The first game I played was Pitfall! I remember playing this game all the time as a kid, but my strategy was basically just trying to stay alive. Pitfall! has an odd points system in which you get points for accumulating treasure and lose points for running into logs or falling down holes. You get 3 lives or a 20 minute timer, whichever ends first. Surprisingly, I was able to run out the timer on my first game. Not a bad score, but beatable now that I have a strategy:

Secondly, I played Kaboom! and got my a#@ handed to me. I never remembered this game being so hard and that the paddles on screen were so small........oh.........yeah..........I had the difficulty switched over to hard....... Once I got that figured out, I was able to put up a decent score after a few tries. Nothing close to douglie I'm afraid, but there's still time. Muwahaha!

Tip for Pitfall: Run to the left...

I tried to play a second game starting out running left, but wasn't running into any treasure. I am sure there are probably advantages to running left, but I've always been use to going right.

This is something that was provided originally for Pitfall! It's a map of the game, along with a hint as to how to collect all the treasure. You'll understand where my hint comes from, but I would only use this once you're familiar with the game and want to max out your score:

Soooo much easier this way.  Considering this I can't believe that the badge score was only 20,000 points.  Gonna spend a solid 30 minutes tonight after chores and baths.  I'm playing it two different ways: A260 and PS2 via emulator on PC - my PS2 is sick :( .

No doubt, I was thinking the same thing about the 20,000 pts. for the badge. Seems way too easy compared to how hard the other badges are to acquire. Maybe Activision wanted to send out more badges to advertise and sell more of their other games. No idea.

Go for that title man! I want this to be a month long slug out. I know that some people are having trouble getting all of their games in time. If this is the case, I will add a few days at the end of the month for people to post new scores for all games like I did in the SoR challenge. If you are waiting on games, PLEASE send me a PM. I want this to be a fun and inclusive month.

Kaboom! was a wash.  I've never been good that this game.  This is the best I can do with the paddle controller.  I'll try it again on the PS2 Activision collection later, but I don't have any ambitions that I will magically get better.

Just want to make sure I have a full 7 day week :) are we doing kaboom and pitfall until the 7th or tomorrow, pitfall I am sucking at I got 7840 so far but need a better score before I post it

banana, the only person to request a title from the first week is Addicted - I'll be sending him Kaboom!. The rest didn't have any requests for Pitfall! or Kaboom!

Weekend was a wash. Envelopes with carts are being sent out this afternoon, as I need to send out my mortgage payment anyways (and yes, it's late).

I fired up my Atari 2600 last night to play some Kaboom and Pitfall, only to discover that the button on all of my controllers was not working.  After doing some searching on the internet, it seems that it's a problem with the controller port on the Atari itself.  Oh well, I might try to hunt down one of those PS2 collections or something, but otherwise I might be sitting this one out.  :(

Sent out a copy of Enduro to douglie, and Enduro and Kaboom to Addicted. I think I've got some more carts at home I need to go through, but those were the only ones people requested that I ended up having in the box. I've got a ton of other Activision carts - just not those.

Yeah, PS2 and PSX have collections/anthologies. Try and pick up one if you can. Usually pretty easy to find and under $5.

There's also the Game Room on Xbox 360, if you want to purchase games towards the gamerscore on that.

@Shadow: Thanks! Let me know how much it cost you. I haven't had a chance to start the games yet. I've been working a lot and had to cancel a vacation day just to keep up.

Know the feeling. We're gearing up for production/Alpha, I'm working to evict my roommates (they've gotten the notice), and now everyone suddenly wants me to have a life. I'll look through the rest of my titles in my collection and see if there's stuff I'm not interested in keeping due to quality or very minor label variations.

I agree.  I've played Pitfall! using a total of 6 different controllers (Dual Shock 2, Logitech Dual Action, Original A2600, A2600 from Flashback 3, Genesis 3-button, and Genesis 6-button) and can only seem to use two with any sort of success: Logitech Dual Action and Genesis 6-button, with the latter being my fav.  Hey, at least you've done better than my Kaboom! score.  Man, that was just embarassing  :(

And now to blow you all away with my incredible Pitfall! score.  I lasted over 4 minutes!! Oh yeah, and F*CK THOSE ALLIGATORS!!!

There was some discussion about controllers the other day. I've tried a lot of them and I find that this one is the best I've ever played with hands down.

Not my best game.  I had hoped that racing RC cars would translate to the quick reflexes needed for this game. Apparently not.

Pretty happy with this score.  I have not played this game in ages.

Managed to bump my score a tad bit higher, but not by much.  I thought I had my Wico Baseball bat joystick somewhere but I couldn't find it.  I was stuck using a Gemstik with a sticky button :(

I'm quickly realizing I should do a hardware review for the controllers on 2600. I've got close to 100 different controllers. >.<

Alright, the scores for Week 1 have been updated and tallied. I know that Addicted is waiting on carts, so I am trying to think of a fair way to include him, or any other members who might be interested in playing, in the competition.

Here are two options that I would like to get participant opinions on:

1. Extend Week 1 so that people can play Pitfall! and Kaboom! for another week. These would be played alongside of the Week 2 shmups.

or

2. Designate 2-3 days at the end of the month for a "Royal Rumble" where participants can play all of the games and improve their standings.


I would like for you guys to vote on these two options, or propose other ideas. I truly want to make this a fun community experience. Thanks.

Spider Fighter is the most requested cart, so I suspect most people will be out for that one. :(

I suggest Royal Rumble.

I can probably get most carts for under $5 locally, so please let me know if you need any carts that Shadow doesn't have.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the Royal Rumble. That will give people a chance to gather games and attempt to climb the ladder for more points. Right now, I have the most to lose with a Royal Rumble, but think it will be exciting to even try and better my scores to defend position. I still want to hear what others think before setting it in stone though.

I know I don't have any extra copies of Spider Fighter, unfortunately - every copy in the area was torn to shreds. :'(

Just send me a PM with the names of people looking for specific carts that you do not have and I can contact them to see if they want me to pick them up. I probably won't be able to get them to them before Week 2 is up, but I guess this kind of makes a Royal Rumble more appropriate.

Not great but a start.  This game goes absolutely nuts after a while, I noticed.  Does this have to do with wave progress or points?

Not a bad initial score at all when you consider that the badge score is 40,000.

From the feedback I have received, it seems that everyone is really excited about doing a Royal Rumble during the last 3 days of the month. I have updated the initial post as follows:

ROYAL RUMBLE - (4/28 - 4/30) 3 Days Only! During this time, you can post scores for any Activision games we are playing this month. This will help you raise your overall score and help those who missed the initial weeks of play catch up. As a means of helping me keep up with the scoring during this time, please only post scores that will get you on the board or raise your standing.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this update. It should be pretty exciting few days.

Nice score on Seaquest bombatomba. Pretty fun shooter. I really like the little detail of putting the ship on top of the water that you have to be careful of when going to the top.

Can in after a 3 hour tour of picking up a pin and put this score up. 78,440. Badge meh!

How long did it take you to get that?  Felt like I was dodging bullets for 20 minutes to get mine...

And on that note, why is the wave multiplier only for Expert mode?  I certainly didn't find that mode very difficult at all (just slightly faster and a much larger score).

No idea, I play normal mode. Honestly, I have only played this game twice and these are the two scores I put up. :)    My strategy is to try to get left quickly before each wave. If you can get that white bug down quick, you can take every thing down pretty quick. Once you get around 30k, every thing gets much quicker, including your fire. If I get a spider up at the very top bouncing around, I will just dodge bullets for a while to give my fire hand a little rest.

Hey SingleBanana, the left side strategy on Spider Fighter works good, perhaps to good.  After over 2 hours of playing I got bored.  The speed of the game seems to peak at 100,000. My thumb was crying for mercy.  On to Seaquest.

I love the scoring and extra life system in Spider Fighter, they nailed it. When I first start playing, I'm relaxed in my seat and after every wave I inch closer to my TV.

NOTE - I'm trying to post my Spider Fighter score pic, but it's saying "The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."  Not sure what to do.

Try posting it from another device if you can, or just try to post it again later. If you are still having issues, we can discuss other options. If you took a picture of your score on your phone, you could always text it to me and I could post it for you. I don't mind shooting you my cell in a PM. Just let me know, we'll make sure it's recognized.

Should be fixed - it was a permissions issue that izret brought up that we just patched. Try it now.

Nice one, douglie.  Going to give to give it another shot tonight after treadmill and shower, I think.  Kind of like my version of a nightcap.

On a side note I looked a bit ahead and realized that I've never played Stampede before (despite me owning the PS2 Activision Classics).  On another note I love Keystone Kapers.  I'm not sure but this may be one of the twenty or so A2600 games from my golden age (Atari 2600 games played at my Grandmas house sometime between 1979 and 1984).  Very awesome.  I really love rediscovering these memories (makes me want to hit the local gamestore and load up on 2600, Intellivision, and Coleco games).

10 points for 1st place in each game, 9 points for second place and so on in decending numerical order. You can score no less than 5 points per game for simply participating.

Yeah, amazingly I really don't remember playing that much Stampede either. I have vague memories playing it as a kid, but really didn't understand the rules (as with most of these games). I popped it in the other night and played a game or two and all I can say is that it is really tough! I'll be pretty surprised if anyone earns a badge on it.

Shadow I got the endoro but I never played it so I suck so far :) as for stamped I played it but never got that good at it when I was young, I look forward to trying to get at least 3000 , but right now I am trying to get over 300 on it :) also if I do get a good score today on stamped can I post it early ?

Stampede is a tough and super frantic game. You really have to understand and allow for the speed of the cattle as well as be ready for an unexpected black calf. Throwing out your lasso must also be timed well. Since you can't move until it returns, going after cattle that are further away from you is a very risky option.

I wait until they are close so I get my lasso back quicker

I agree about Stampede, Banana. There are a few strategies to use in this game. I don't think you can rely on memorizing where the black cattle appear because it'll change depending on whether or not there is a clear lane for them. Usually when I push the brown, orange, or yellow cattle forward, I try to capture them on the repel since they are very close.

Yep, great point Jerry! I too try to lasso the cattle after the forward push.

If you look at the time of your post, you made it in plenty of time. We go by the server time, which I believe is set to Central, so you had another 58 minutes. Great scores guys!

For scoring on Enduro, are we going by days completed or miles driven?

For scoring, we will be using miles driven. I am keeping track of the days as well, since that is the indicator of the badge for this game. You will have to make it to day 6, in order to earn the badge achievement, since the rule states "must survive 5 days." I interpret that this means make it to the 6th day.

on the Activision hits it gave me the badge for making it to 5 days.

According to the scan of the actual manual that came with the game, you would be correct douglie. I will make this change and award the badge at 5 days.  ;D

I believe it is on Central Time. That is an hour behind EST, so if you are on the east coast, you can submit until 1 a.m. our time.

That's odd, because when I send a post, the time stamp is an hour behind, which would mean Central. Is the time stamp the same for everyone or perhaps it has something to do with my settings?

Says that "Current forum time: April 30, 2014, 02:31:35 PM" when time offset is set to zero. That's one hour behind my current time, so Central Time. Either way, I will accept scores until midnight Central Time (server time) since that is what I stated in the beginning.

Despite me not participating a lot (April is my busiest month of the year), I had a lot of fun playing Pitfall!, Spider Fighter, and Stampede. I would not have played them in a long time if not for these playthroughs.

Glad you enjoyed playing some of these games. Although the playthrough is over, I hope that some of you will continue to keep the dust off your 2600s and possibly play a few more Activision titles. There are some great games by that developer that I did not include in the playthrough and it's a nice sub-collection to collect for the 2600.

I received a PM from bsr241 and it looks like he and I are goinig to have a one night/one game showdown for the title of RFGeneation Atari Activision King. We are still ironing out the game and the night we are going to play, so stay tuned. :)
