Your avatar and the rules for the drinking game make a sick sort of sense. Not enough shots, though.

In that case, take I shot every time I nervously say the phrase, "ya know." Ha!

I had recently gotten hooked on the Atari 2600. The system is way before my time though (I was born in '91). So I never had this system growing up. Even with all the other consoles I have I have gotten hooked on this system. Simple, yet fun.

I'm actually very curious about the sword quest series. I have not heard anything really good about it but the fact that the game coincides with a comic book released by DC comics, and that comic book helps solve the puzzles in the game, really intrigues me and I want to check it out. Tons and tons of games to try.

The bad news is... I'm into box collecting now. About 2 weeks before this episode released I decided I wanted my atari collection to be CIB. At least its one of the cheap(er) systems to do that for.

You don't know how expensive CIB collections for Atari 2600 get... ::)
The lower tiers are cheap, but you start hitting the ceiling for prices quickly once you get to R5 and higher.

I had a loose Atari game that was 100-150 bucks. The same game complete went for $1100.00.

I don't want anyone to get alcohol poisoning.

 Guess I needed to take a closer look at prices! I know a few got way up there, but it still seems cheaper than going CIB for the NES or SNES. Thats why I added the (er) at the end of "cheap" ;).

Also, Wildbil... play Infinite Undiscovery. Love the story, love the game play. I actually started playing through it again because I thought it was so awesome. Title is ridiculous but game is awesome.

Speaking of alcohol... That bourbon ale you found, love bourbon ales. There is one that I buy at the store all the time called Kentucky Bourbon Barrel. That stuff is delicious!

Wow. No love for Atari Jr. I guess one had to receive it as an Xmas gift when it was at retail and had it become their first console, to feel any love for it. 

I think there is love for it, I just think that the classic woodgrain finish of the originals is more aesthetically pleasing to the collector or nostalgia prone individual (like me). The Jr. came out around the crash and just before the NES. It being the last 2600 model released, and its similarity to the 7800, unfortunately kind of mark the end of the era. Kind of the blood in the water via other outside factors. With that said, I still do not have one in my collection and would love to own one some day to display on my Atari shelf.

How about shot for every time Duke gets violently indignant almost to the point of a nervous breakdown when someone mispronounces a game title, calls the Super Nintendo a "sness," or does something else to set him off. You know, a "Screaming Indianian moment," to paraphrase Bil. Like when Nanners pronounced my Ys SNES (that's ess-en-eee-ess, BTW) pickup as "wyes" instead of "ees" right after the 2-hour-51-minute mark. Better be careful what you say around the guy; he is armed after all.

BTW I never bought a copy of the 8-Bit Christmas 2013 NES homebrew. How did you come to the conclusion that I did?

At the moment I still have the last half hour or so to listen to.....

Over the past few years I've gotten the chance to listen to and meet several of the old Atari people. Programmers, employees and such. All most always they refer to it as the "VCS." On the odd occasion I've heard them say "2600" it's along the lines of, "What was it you kids called it? The 2600 or something like that?" If memory serves (because googling it would take too much effort) VCS, Video Computer System, was the original name for it. When Atari started selling other home consoles the marketing people wanted to make some connections between them, they started using the VCS' part number, 2600.



I have a couple of the things you guys were talking about so I'm using this as show and tell:

While listening, I thought for sure my wireless 2600 controllers were like Duke was describing, turns out I have the Bil version. The receiver has the collapsible antenna though:

It looks like you would plug in the power supply into the receiver then the receivers built in wire would power the console. The controllers take one 9 volt battery each.

It has scans of all the wishbooks....I think. I still need to look at it myself. When I was a kid, we always got them for free. They just came in the mail. But, I do think you could buy them as well. Maybe they were free some years, back when Sears was doing well, and cost money other years? Maybe we got them for free because we bought things out of them and they just sent them to customers?



I'm a bit reluctant to tell my wife that the Luigi was brought up in the show. She did make it from scratch. When it was called "creepy" in the forums she got that sad pouty look. She's happy with it and I don't think it looks that bad in real life. She likes to draw manga style art sometimes so I think there is a bit of that style she threw in there.


Glad to hear those C64 carts get talked about so much. I actually got those to send them on to someone else, I already had my own Fast Load cart  ;D   

Those joysticks are just such monsters; I can't believe I ever used them. Someone is getting lucky with the Fast Load cart, as it really is a near necessity.

Awesome! Another Atari Jr. The first ever console I received for Christmas when I was 6. We already had the Intellivision but my brother broke it. We also had a PONG set from Sears growing up, so I have been gaming right from the First generation of consoles. I also loved playing Kaboom! with those paddles.

Great info nupoile. It's neat to get a little perspective on the history of the name. In the interview, I was speaking from my personal experience with the name. I had never heard the term "VCS" growing up and it wasn't until a few years ago that I happen to stumble upon what that acronym meant (I kind of put it together when looking at one of my consoles). I probably started playing the 2600 in 1980-1981 and at that time people just called it the "Atari," because it was really the only home console out by them at the time and the name was familiar enough in arcades. It's interesting, because I'm sure that there were also differences in what the system was called regionally as well. I remember calling it the 2600 only after the 5200 was released to differentiate the two systems. Wish they had started calling it this before my parents bought that 5200 for me for Christmas. :)

I like Bil's idea of heading out to Oregon to hang out with Nupoile and Fokakis for some brews and games.

We should start up an annual RF Generation Game and Guzzle meet-up. ;)

That sounds like a good idea to me. I'm all for it.

If you all come over here we can sort out piles of Odyssey^2 games and play the Vectrex. We only have one spare bed though so I hope you are all really friendly.

Maybe we could rent a house on the coast and recreate The Goonies in real life. I'd play the part of the older brother. It would be great....

Or we could travel around, going to all the barcades in the state, trying to find out which one is the best all the while not really caring because they are all awesome.

We could go to Crater Lake and all stand around taking pictures with our Game Boy Advance Camera accessories showing up all those "normal" people with their iPhone's and SLR's.

If you all came in October, we could meet up at PRGE. That would save me a lot of work actually, I wouldn't have to write that big old huge blog with the hundreds of slightly entertaining, but blurry, pictures because you would all be there.

Fokakis might have some ideas too, if we go visit him, we could take in a Seahawks game and we could show you what a real football team is like.

And don't forget Retrorage, he's around here too, maybe he can give a class on meltybeads or something.

But I am older so I get to play it. Even though I dont know what that means since I have only seen it once and it was a few years ago.

Howzabout checking out an arenaball game?  The Portland Thunder's inaugural season kicks off on MArch 17th at home against the SaberCats.

BTW I've found arena football to be like hockey in one sense: it's best seen in person. Television simply does not do the game justice.

ANYway, here are some of my TL;DR thoughts on what I've heard so far:

-   Yes, Bil, I am indeed the one who said that if you don't have DuckTales Remastered for a Nintendo system, you don't have the real deal. And Bil is doubly guilty of this sin 'cuz he didn't even buy a physical copy of the game! For shame, sir! Tender your resignation immediately.

-   Shout out to Bil and his Skylanders voice-actor mania! Um, I’ll overlook your DuckTales Remastered blasphemy… for now. ANYway, the character you so adore is Flynn, voiced by Patrick Warburton, probably best known as SpongeBob’s best bud Patrick. I know him best as the paraplegic copper Joe Swanson from Family Guy. I think he was also Captain Qwark in a few of the Ratchet & Clank games. He’s what I call a “character” voice-actor: he tends to “play” the same or similar parts, usually pompous, over-the-top wanna-be-macho types who turn into screaming girly-men when caught in a dangerous situation. He’s one of those guys whose voice is so distinctive, he uses pretty much the same one for every character he plays. Pretty much like Peter Cullen, AKA the only true voice of Optimus Prime.

If you’ve played Giants, you may have also noticed the voice talents of George Takei, along with Bob “Zed and Shakes the Clown” Goldthwait as Pop Fizz.

BTW what’s wrong with playing Skylanders alone in your basement? I’d be so jealous of such a person… mainly ‘cuz I don’t have a basement. They’re almost unheard of in earthquake country…

-   I was struck by someone saying that, at its height, Sears was the Wal-Mart of its era, or something to that effect. Which I found kinda strange when I heard it, as I always viewed Wal-Mart being unpretentiously and unapologetically low-rent, while Sears at least tries to appear simultaneously high-class and middle class.

When the late and lamented Sears catalog was mentioned, I came up with a better analogy: Sears was the Amazon.com of its era. ‘Cuz that catalog seemed to have absa-freakin’-lutely EVERYthing in the world to offer. ‘Course, you had to make your order in the real, physical world—meatspace, as some call it—and the shipping turnaround time was a fair sight longer. Okay, maybe that isn’t such a good analogy, either. In any case, the discussion has inspired me to read further about the history of Sears...which will get me away from those morbid airline disaster shows for a while.

-   For some reason, when I listened to the show on Pod-O-Matic, it would not continue past the 3 hour 7 minute mark. I even tried to skip a little beyond it to see if it would continue, without any luck. But then it got posted to YouTube, and I started listening to the show over there.

Zag, Patrick is played by Bill Fagerbakke.

Warburton has done a ton of stuff.  He was The Tick in the television show, and he does commercials pretty often.  The most recent one I can think of is for NAPA auto parts, where he voices the can on the counter.

Oh yeah? Huh, I coulda sworn I'd read somehwere that Warburton voiced him. Compounding my error was the fact that the character's voice seemed to have that Warburton-ish sound to it, albeit literally "dumbed down." Live end learn...


Never watched the show, but judging from some of the Tick comics I've read, he'd be the best choice for that role.


I've heard him in a few radio commercials here and there. Couldn't tell you for what products though.

The Game Brain for the Atari is just a passthrough, I took mine apart :) its very basic... I didnt read all the forums but though I would let you know.  and I just added the Rapid Fire to the database.
